Die Dörfer der Grebo im Hinterland von Liberia waren lange Zeit völlig isoliert und von der Außenwelt weitgehend abgeschnitten. Erst in den 1970er Jahren wurde Cape Palmas, die wichtigste Stadt der Grebo, auf dem Landweg erreichbar. Weder der „poro“ noch der „sande“-Bund waren zu den Grebo gelangt, auch Beschneidungen wurden nicht praktiziert. Man weiß, dass es Geheimbünde der Männer „kiu“ gab und den Bund
für die Abwehr von Schadenszauber „kofi“. Der Bund „do yen“ sollte gegen die magischen Kräfte der Wassermenschen schützen, Geisterwesen, die auf dem Grund der Gewässer leben und den Menschen schaden können.
