ZEBROS PROJECTS MULTI-PLATFORM WIRELESS MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR CONTINUOUS BIO-MONITORING

ABSTRACT Our proposed system presents new multi-protocol wireless measurement system for continuous biomedical monitoring of human body parameters. The main goal is monitoring of selected physiological processes that might be very useful in health care and monitoring during sport activities. The monitoring device, based on an on-body sensor, is designed with respect to small size, low power consumption as well as interoperability. Therefore, it is equipped with a microcontroller with RF module for ZigBee PRO or ANT+ networks. Measured data is sent through the wireless network to an acquisition point, which collects the data and transfers it to a database server. Here, the data is stored and can be accessed remotely via internet/GSM.

This system is mainly aimed at home health care, so it should be able to communicate with standard personal devices such as cellphone, notebook/netbook, PC, tablet, etc. For this reason, the acquisition point is able to communicate via Bluetooth standard as well as Bluetooth low energy (for future use). Through this network, user can view live data as well as data stored in the database server. As an example, the system for monitoring of psycho-galvanic reflex of the human skin will be shown. The communication between the acquisition point and sensor is based on ZigBee PRO network and communication between the acquisition point and visualization device uses Bluetooth network.

ZEBROS PROJECTS EXISTING SYSTEM

For such a bio monitoring system, conflicting requirements are rather common. As these systems are battery powered, they should be energy saving. However, fluctuation or anomaly of monitored parameter should be processed quickly. This is rather power consuming so usually, in the design of bio monitoring sensors, the newest technology and standards are used. For such a network, short range wireless technologies are appropriate. This leads to several wireless communication standards such as WiFi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, WiMAX, ANT, etc. being used, each dedicated for a particular application. However, in future intelligent systems, simultaneous use of multiple communication approaches is expected, for example those employed within a single residential unit. In this case, it is important not only to ensure the interoperability and compatibility but also meet the specific needs of individual approach. Nowadays, on one hand, we face the enormous complexity of requirements for these systems that operate independently and provide many features and, on the other hand, just unification, globalization and simplification approaches and management of such systems are required. Future smart interface should be able to establish communication among devices together and to ensure overall interoperability. The smart interface should also be able to implement the necessary communication links between selected points, in our case, e.g., the smart control, and multi communication smart control (smart watch, smart devices, etc.).

ZEBROS PROJECTS PROPOSED SYSTEM For this purpose, comprehensive analysis of wireless communication systems and protocols has been performed. The most suitable frequency band of 2.4 GHz ISM (world-wide use, smart home) was chosen, with respect to a compact size, antenna, RF devices as well as communication (transfer data rate), low-power consumption, possibilities of time and frequency multiplex, high efficiency communication protocol, etc. The main goal is monitoring of selected physiological processes that might be very useful in health care and monitoring during sport activities. Development of wireless measurement system for interfacing the grid of smart sensors with respect to the optimum energy consumption is required. For this purpose, a low-power wireless transceiver for connecting sensors monitoring different physiological parameter and variables via a multi-communication unit has been specified. Main focus has been also paid to low-power design in a standard low-cost technology as well as the use of multi-communication approach. ZEBROS PROJECTS Main function of the application for data visualization in smartphones is presentation of a medical record to the doctor or scientist. Medical record composes of general information about patient; provide access to actual data as well as data of measurements performed in the past. Since the information stored in the medical record is confidential, the system requires authorization of the person accessing information. After authorization, the user gets access to general information and all measurements performed, as well as to setup of the connected sensors. In the history of measurements, the user can display and evaluate measured data.
