Sometimes outpromised. Never outperformed.

One goal, one promise: To provide not only what you want, but also what you need. Zartman Construction, a full-service general contractor, has built hundreds of buildings in the Susquehanna Valley. Founded in 1973 by Gene Zartman, the family-owned business, which concentrates on commercial, institutional and industrial building construction, has grown to one of the largest contracting firms in central Pennsylvania. Gene established a company policy to meet and exceed the customer’s expectations by providing top quality construction services, a pleasant construction experience, providing added value to the owner and completing the project on time. Knowing that top-quality construction services require highly skilled people Gene began gathering skilled people in the carpentry, concrete and ironworking trades; along with a professional operations department, project managers, estimators, clerical and accounting personnel. The most important aspect of our organization has always been our people. We currently employ 130 full-time employees, with an office force including highly skilled estimators and project managers. Our tradesmen are round and finish carpenters, iron workers, cement masons, laborers and equipment operators. We are proud of their work ethic and the quality work produced by our people. Gene’s son David joined the business full-time in 1983 and took over as president of the company in 2006 after Gene’s retirement. In 2017, two of Gene’s grandchildren joined the company full-time. Our mission statement for over 40 years has stayed true — sometimes outpromised, never outperformed.

“As design professionals working all over the country with very special technical and administrative requirements such as the Air Traffic Control Tower at University Park Airport, we tend to have some natural concerns when selecting a contractor from those we have not worked with before. Zartman proved they are the right contractor for this project”

- Kevin S. Kunde, PE Project Manager, Mead & Hunt, Inc.

Design Build Construction When design and construction are both in our hands, you have a single point of contact and responsibility for quality, cost and schedule. You are able to focus on the scope of the project, defining the needs and timely decision-making, rather than coordinating between designer and builder. With one party responsible for the entire process, there’s motivation to provide superior quality and project performance. You can also save money by evaluating alternative construction costs earlier in the process. You will also save time since design and construction can overlap and bidding and redesign are eliminated. Risk management is improved since risks are appropriately balanced with individual risks managed by the party best positioned to manage that risk. Design build can save over four months in most new construction projects. Our four phase process gives you more control over costs. We provide alternative methods and regular updates to assure a competitive price.

It is our company philosophy to provide our employees with the safest possible work environment, an environment free of known and potential hazards. Our employees deserve the right to return home to their families, in the same shape they left for work that morning. We have a full-time safety director on staff with over 20 years in construction safety management and an authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer. Our safety committee is state certified and is a key part of our safety program. The committee meets monthly and is dedicated to resolving all issues presented to them. The committee also oversees the awards program, which is based on hours worked without a lost time accident. Employees are rewarded when they reach set milestones, with some employees having worked over 25,000 hours without an accident or injury. A specific program for supervisors has been in place since 1995 and encourages and rewards supervisors for their participation in safety. Our supervisors conduct weekly “tool box” talks with their teams, which revolve around specific safety subjects. Weekly job-site safety inspections are also performed by our supervisors. Our safety director and superintendents also perform regular safety inspections of all sites. All new employees go through safety training during their orientation. Each year every employee attends “Safety Day” at our office with guest speakers and demonstrations on various safety topics.

Durdach Brothers Distribution Zartman Construction built a pre-engineered metal building which was designed to maintain materials at 60° year round. The materials inside the warehouse are rotated from the warehouse on a weekly basis. The new 35,000 square foot metal building consists of 30,000 square feet of warehouse space and 5,000 square feet for an interior truck drive-through loading area. The warehouse height is 18 feet clear at low eaves to store the pallets of material.

Commercial - Design Build

Zimmerman Motors Zartman Construction renovated the car dealership after a flood heavily damaged the offices and showroom area. The repairs utilized CMU walls coated with Dryvit’s Stone Mist System on the interior. A design-build approach was utilized for the repairs and involved the work of our internal drafting and engineering departments, ultimately providing a cost effective building solution for the owner. An acrylic panel tower with two EIFS parapet wings was also built for a facade uplift. The exterior renovation was in compliance with Chrysler’s dealership requirements and included new ACM tower panels and front facade upgrades.
