URB AN GRAF T ING

The aim of the project is to research “on the field� the relationships between the physical metamorphosis of an existing urban landscape and the shift in its environmental qualities and social relevance. The chosen site for the design exercise is located in the very center of Milano, in the midst of its older nucleus. The area is waiting for a new program and role, respectful of their delicate location and context but adequate to a contemporary metropolis and its new values. The project is composed by a student hostel, services and a multi-purpose space for events and expositions, plus the creation of a meaningful public open space in the form of a new square.

M EAT CIT Y

Meat City is a project for a better future, right against the stream of cruelty and pollution linked with the meat production system. The ex Municipal Slaughterhouse of Viale Molise becomes a sustainable center for the production of “in vitro meat”, in relationship with the city of Milano and its citizens. The project aims to be a closed-cyrcle system, based on different rings of the same chain. Laboratories, agricultural fields, animals’ farms, educational areas works together, opening the doors of an historically hidden treasure, creating a restored space for sharing knowledge based on biodiversity and sustainability.

In Vitro Meat Making Process 1. A small sample of muscle is harvested from a living animal via biopsy.

2. The tissue is cut into very small pieces to separate the muscle fibers from cells.

3. Cells merge naturally into small fibers called myotubes.

4. From the tissue, the cells grow into strands. A single one can have more than a trillion cells.

HEL LO N AT URE

Since the dawn of time, humanity has been dependent on nature to provide us with food and shelter, and this project want to celebrate the relationship between human and nature, showing how architecture can encourage involvement with nature. Hello nature is a project for a small wildlife research community located in the northern Sweden at the foot of a mountain (Omneberget), with both elements of education and recreation. The project is composed by a main temporary dwelling area for students, a separated private area for long term researcher, a laboratory area and a shared sauna.

T H E S PA C E BETWEEN T H E E A RT H AND THE SKY Inspired by the Norwegian scenery, the country’s pavilion is aiming the blur the boundaries between earth and sky, explore the in between space and let the visitors choose the type of landscape that inspires them – they are called to define the undefined. The proposed scheme is a triangulated dynamic system covered from top and below with two different surfaces. The main installation held in the inner part of the glass pavilion, will be supported by the structural system aforementioned. Vertical expandable pipes with a fabric material at the end will be hanging from the structure, while sensors on the ground floor will activate their vertical movement and therefore the visual effect of a movable skin will be given. “Never trust to general impressions, my boy, but concentrate yourself upon details�. How do we perceive artworks in an open plan room? Changing the point of perspective from which you start to observe things means changing the feeling of that experience. A simple-complex concept that we applied through a developed surface sculpture. Using the computational design we generate different optical cones that intersect our sculpture, creating openings on different details of the artwork, giving to the spectator the possibility to explore the artwork while interacting with the sculpture itself.

Cocoon is a pavilion made by corrugated cardboard. Is a result of the workshop held at the Fablab inside the Mediterranean Academy of Architecture, named “GH_to Fabrication” in Cava de’Tirreni from 13 to 16 May 2013 in collaboration with Co-de.iT. The tutor Andrea Graziano and Amleto Picerno, step by step, introduced the participants to the concepts of computational design and digital fabrication through the use of Rhino, Kangaroo Grashopper which allowed the planarization of the hexagonal elements in which the pavilion had been tessellated. Finally, the whole staff was involved in the assembly the cardboard panels, cut by CRTS company, and assembled in the Media Library Marte, in Salerno, Italy.

With the progressive glacier meltdown thinking about floating cities lost in the middle of the ocean is no longer pure utopia. The city we thought about lies on floating modules that are added progressively with the sea levels increasing allowing a gradual abandonment of the old urban system. Distributing work activities below the sea level while the housing units and more public spaces above it. At the centre of each city, there will be some “artificial lungs”, that transform carbon dioxide into oxygen through artificial photosynthesis, replacing the trees that will be lost with the flooding of the earth’s crust. At the edge of the city there will be a new countryside consists of aquaponics farming.
