Hinsdale native, who found her fashion footing as a teen, now has her own clothing line By Ken Knutson kknutson@thehinsdalean.com

Ashley Zygmunt said her fascination with fashion surfaced early on in her Hinsdale childhood. “One year I was on the Hinsdale (Community Pool) swim team, but I only did it because I liked the swimsuits,” she said. Now living in Chicago, the 2004 Hinsdale Central graduate made a splash last year with the launch of her clothing line, Zamrie. An intuitive observer of people’s choice of dress, Zygmunt was influenced by the styles she saw in her hometown as a youth. She said the village helped nudge the direction of her designs. “I think Hinsdale dressed more conservatively, and it made me want to go out of the box and try different things,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be different.” When Zygmunt was a junior at Central, she enrolled in a pattern-making class offered at the School of the Art Institute downtown to see if she was truly cut out for the fashion field. “I loved it. It was completely worth it to me. I couldn’t sew, so my friend sewed it for me. But I patterned it.” She went on to study apparel design at Purdue University — where she also taught herself to sew — and participated in exchange programs in Florence, Italy, and Hong Kong. Zygmunt credits the wellrounded curriculum her major required for giving her a strong foundation to navigate the fickle fashion industry. “In the design program,

OR IGIN AL S you also have to take accounting, science, math, and marketing so you know the business side as well,” Zygmunt explained. “I wanted to make sure I had another career option.” A summer internship in New York with designer Zac Posen exposed her to the high-end fashion world, and she returned to the Big Apple after graduating from Purdue in 2008 to work alongside designer Peter Som. She gained valuable experience as a freelancer designing for a Wal-Mart clothing line and Just My Size. But Zygmunt’s heart had never strayed far from the Midwest, and she was eager to spread her wings in home territory. “I just wasn’t feeling like I was using my creative energy, and I missed my family and friends,” she said. “I knew I always wanted to have my own label in Chicago.” During a wistful phone call back home in November 2009, Zygmunt’s mom, Becky, mentioned the Chicago Fashion Incubator, a competition co-sponsored by the city and Macy’s to spotlight promising young designers. With the deadline for entry just a few days away, she scrambled to get submit her application. “I somehow got it there in time. Two weeks later I got a call for an interview. Two weeks after that, they called and offered me a spot. So, literally, my life changed within a month.” The six winners were given work space, mentoring and

Zygmunt already had been plying her craft under the name Zamrie, an anagram of her last initial and middle name, Marie. She said the incubator experience helped tailor her attention to women’s tops that suit any occasion. “We focus in blouses now. You can wear them with a pair of ripped up jeans but still be classy — something that makes you take a double take. I’ve always believed in versatility.” She spent all of 2009 developing a collection and began filling orders in January. Four Chicago area boutiques carry her clothes, and Zygmunt said there could be as many as eight locations by the fall. Recently, while having lunch before a meeting with a prospective buyer, Zygmunt was approached by another admiring proprietor. “She said ‘I love your blouse. Can I get some for my shop?’ ” When told that Zygmunt

may be selling to a rival, the woman said she would carry her line if that deal fell through. She’s never seen her work pop up in public but has received reports from those who have, often with the halfjoking, half-encouraging exclamation “Zamrie is everywhere!” “You never know who you’re sitting next to. Right now, the most rewarding thing is getting into more and more boutiques or having random people compliment me.” Zygmunt said being one’s own boss means taking responsibility for every aspect of the business. Learning to be patient for results over the last year has been a challenge, she said, but it also deepened her sense of gratitude for the success she’s enjoying. “Having your own business, you’ll have the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. You have to be willing to do the dirty work to do the good work. It’s the small things that people notice.” One of the new vendors in

autumn will be Schoen’s in Hinsdale, which Zygmunt said will be a sweet homecoming. “I’m really excited to be sold in Hinsdale. I’m actually pretty proud of it. I’m excited to dress Hinsdale women.” Zygmunt longs for the day when her line is known by fashionistas and available in department stores. She said her friends from high school, many of whom she is still close to, are not surprised by her chosen livelihood. But it may not fully sink in for Zygmunt until a Zamrieclad lady happens to cross her path. “I think I might pass out when that happens. Someone will have to pick me up off the ground.”
