01 REDHOOK LIBRARY The following is my design proposal for red hook library. My approach to the desgin was re-examining the existing library, their use of the space and how to utilize the addition to the site. I prioritized the needs of the community, which were to create individual spaces for the individual needs of the people that occupy the space. I also addressed the the privacy of the adjacent residential houses.

02 URBAN LOOP The following project is located in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York. Red Hook is defined by the Gowanus Highway/BQE at the North-East, and the estuary of the East River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean and the New York Harbor along the waterfront. The existing industrial and commercial areas coexist with burgeoning low rise houses and commercial activities as well as numerous distinguished industrial buildings converted into residential use. It also houses a number of low income families. Despite intense interest in the site by developers and local residents, many unused open areas exist. There is a lack of life and activity in Red Hook due to it’s lack of connections to the rest of the city and its existing environmental conditions. During the Sandy Storm, most of Red Hook suffered due flooding. It has been under restoration and development ever since, but there is still a lack community. The idea behind Urban Loop revolves around the environmental conditions that Red Hook has and how to best take advantage of it through natural resources. The first that was addressed in this design is redirecting water flow by allowing steams of water to flow throughout the site. After understanding Red Hooks topography, it was decided that the best areas to allow water to flow in where the areas that were lower in elevation and prone to flooding. These areas also overlapped with unused empty lots. The areas surrounding the steams were created into green space and recreational facilities. In further developing the site, a looped pedestrian path was created throughout the green space. Along the path, nodes of interest were created along with housing. The housing development was created to accommodate population growth within the next 25 years. My main focus of the design was on the housing development, however the scope of the project was designed corroboratively. Credit is given to Gizem Nacir and Yara Mourtada.

Red hook is prone to sever flood damage. Areas prone to flooding are excavated in order to minimize flood damage. After excavation, the coast is filled to create a buffer zone.

Areas of lower elevation are at high risk of flooding. Continuous loop of green space is created to absorb excess flooding. Higher elevated areas are utilized for permanent development.

Region is split up into three clusters of districts which include artists, residential and commercial. To preserve this characteristic, the park design includes galleries, shops, cafes, residential housing and recreational green space.

Unoccupied land and existing lots are repurposed in order to create spaces that are more essentail for new residents and visitors.

Creating more green spaces allows for water to be absorbed into the earth rather than overflow in the combined sewage system that exists in Redhook.

Channelling water through out the site allows for control of water flow. Creating green spaces around channels will prevent flooding of developed areas.

Vegetation between developed areas acts as a sound barrier.

03 AFFORDABLE HOUSING The following housing project is located in the lower Manhattan neighborhood known as two bridges which sits between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. The goal was to create a live/work environment for the low income families living in the area. After analyzing the neighborhood and noticing the limited options to fresh food, my work aspect of the housing project became urban farming.

My initial goal was to perserve the cross cirulation the existing site already provided.

By splitting the site in half, that would mean that the shared green house space would become a bridge.

Rationalizing square footage led to this massing.

The layout of the bedrooms created this massing.
