WHO RUNS THE START-UP LOANS COMPANY? James Caan was appointed the Chairman of The StartUp Loans Company in June 2012 by Lord Young of Graffham, the Enterprise Advisor to the Prime Minister, David Cameron. CEO Tim Sawyer runs the company, which reports to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

Backed by government, with a fund of ÂŁ117.5 million, The StartUp Loans Company will help create 25,000 businesses across England in all industry sectors by 2015.

OUR STORY

With youth unemployment being one of the biggest challenges the UK economy faces, Lord Young set about meeting this challenge with the idea that the way to create employment is by starting businesses, and even better, to help young people start their own businesses and create their own jobs. Lord Young approached British entrepreneur and philanthropist James Caan, and with the backing of Prime Minister David Cameron, The Start-Up Loans Company was launched.

“If the UK was as entrepreneurial as the US, we would have 900,000 more businesses in this country. Lord Young

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK? The Start-Up Loans Company has a national distribution network of Delivery Partners who operate across England. They work with entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas into a feasible business plan to increase their chances of success. Once the entrepreneur is approved for a loan, they work closely with a business mentor in their chosen industry and region, who will help and guide them to make the right decisions for their business. MENTORING Once a loan is approved, the loan recipient will be matched with a suitable mentor to guide them while starting up their business. Whether it’s to run past an idea, brainstorm with, or to learn from someone who’s done it before, the assigned mentor will be regularly available to help our loan recipients on their business journey. Tom Horigon “I am incredibly passionate about mentoring. I aim to help individuals succeed by filling gaps in their knowledge. I have over 15 years of marketing experience and I own a marketing consultancy specialising in business development and marketing strategy, so I love to share my knowledge and experience with others starting out.” Geoff Reeves Geoff works as a small business advisor at Blackpool council, and is responsible for approving business plans of loan recipients. On mentoring, he says “The combination of the money granted and the mentoring is what makes the scheme likely to create successful businesses. Many can fail without good advice. You can give someone cash but they won’t always know how to spend it.” Sergio Aschettino “It makes me smile when working with these young entrepreneurs. Just to see the motivation and positive aspirations they have plus the boundless amount of energy they put into their business venture. As a business mentor I see my role to help channel the energy and motivation in a constructive and objective way, as well as help with the day to day issues of running your own business.”
