Cheyse-in success A YEAR ON FROM SIGNING WITH THE TIGERS CHEYSE BLAIR HAS TRULY EMBEDDED HIMSELF NOT ONLY IN DARYL POWELL’S TEAM BUT ALSO IN THE COMMUNITY OF CAS AND HAS SETTLED INTO LIFE AS AN AUSTRALIAN MAN IN YORKSHIRE ALONGSIDE HIS FAMILY. IN THIS EDITION OF ROAR CHEYSE REFLECTS ON HIS FIRST YEAR WITH THE CLUB, GETTING THAT ALL IMPORTANT FIRST CAS TRY AND HIS SUPERB START TO 2020… On April 12th 2019 the official social media feeds for Castleford Tigers began teasing an announcement of a new signing with Kit Manager Stu Vause getting out a new shirt and the number 35 to use on the print press. Fans were clamoring to know who it was and when it would be made public, later in the evening live on Sky Sports Brian Carney announced the Fords agreeing to bring over Cheyse Blair from the Melbourne Storm on a threeand-a-half year contract. No doubt moving from Melbourne to Castleford was a culture change but the 6 foot 4’ Aussie has always insisted he settled well into life in England and the competition of Super League. “I settled in really well and quickly, obviously I didn’t have my family for the first month but I’m a pretty laid-back sort of guy, so it didn’t really phase me to be honest and coming over in the summer probably helped,” he said. “I started playing straight away and got used to the surroundings of England, but I wasn’t overly happy with my football and that’s changed this year because I’ve had the full pre-season to get embedded in.”

4

Cheyse, nicknamed Cheese, had to hit the ground quick getting put into the starting lineup immediately after landing on these shores, and during that opening month as a Tigers player he was helped by a fellow Australian. “I stayed at Millo’s (Grant Millington) for the first month because he took me in to show me the ropes of Castleford, I actually played against him back in 2012 and I knew of him but I’d never met him personally until then. He was really great to live with, he never let me do anything, I offered to clean the dishes or to make dinner and he wouldn’t let me, he cooked some good feeds and I appreciate everything he did for me in that first month I was here.” Originally playing in that #35 shirt last year, in 2020 Cheyse has been given the #18 jersey and is reaping the rewards for continued hard work, looking more and more impressive with strong showings in defence and especially this season in attack scoring four tries in the league and surpassing his tally from last season. It took him a little while to get that maiden meat pie and when it did finally happen he was made

to wait just a little bit longer when it got sent upstairs to the video referee after an awkward finish. “I’d played thirteen games up to that point and hadn’t scored, the boys had been into me about never going to score and it felt that way for a bit. I got unlucky coming close to the line or I’d get held up and then that try came, I knew because I felt I’d put it down but it went upstairs to the video ref and all the boys were going; ‘that’s not going to be a try’ but it was. I was just happy to get off the nude run to be honest. After the first one I scored again the following week after that, personally it should have been a lot more playing in the centres but it is what it is.” Joining a side during the season and from the other side of the world means that naturally supporters will be keen to see good performances and the pressure of wanting to impress can add up. “I don’t really like to find excuses when you’re playing the game but I felt a lot of eyes on me and I had to excel to show why I had come over, I was getting frustrated with myself that it wasn’t happening. I had to learn a lot, play with different players and work on a few things to fix up through the season and into pre-season.” We here at ROAR love an old classic rugby league cliché and one that Cheese had heard a lot of was; ‘it takes overseas players a year or a pre-season to settle in’. As he mentioned already in this feature, he settled in quick last season but was struck with an injury in the final play-off matches in 2019. This effected his ‘settling in’ pre-season of 2020. “In our first play-off game against Warrington I suffered a foot injury and we weren’t sure what it was, my foot didn’t swell up and I could keep on running and got through the week to play Salford in what was our last game. I got through but it didn’t feel any better after that Salford loss and I went in for a scan. We picked up that I had a fracture in my lisfranc, a little bit of bone had come

detached and it’s one of those injuries in your foot where it could go a bit pear shaped if something bad happened, we spoke to surgeons about potentially getting surgery and I didn’t want it to be honest because it puts you out for long periods of time. “We did 12 weeks rest, including the off-season, meaning I would miss a big chunk of the pre-season but I was around everyone and still a part of it and my foot feels absolutely fine right now.”

“we’ve started the season well and joint top of the table...For it to come to a halt is disappointing but it is what it is, this isn’t just Super League either it’s around the whole world and we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do and come through it all together.”

Part of the strong start to Blair’s 2020 campaign might be down to his shift from the centres to the second row, a position Cheyse was more than happy to fill in after a couple of conversations with Head Coach Daryl Powell. “I think the pre-season had me a little on the backfoot anyway with Pete & Shenny in the centres who had really strong pre-seasons and so, by the time Toronto had come around I’d only been back in for a few weeks, it had been discussed and I was more than happy to try it out and I’m enjoying it. “You get the ball a lot more, you run at halfbacks which is even better and that was the biggest difference, the workload, I made 35 tackles in that match and topped the tackle count in that game which is unheard of for me playing in the centres, sometimes you make a maximum of five tackles in a game. So, a bigger workload which I’ve had to take on, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far and I’m just in the game a lot more I feel, you’re working with your halfback non-stop throughout the game and in your training as well where we build our combinations, I’ve got my hands on the ball more and making more of an impact.” Castleford’s last match before the season got suspended due to COVID-19 prevention measures was a brilliant victory over the Champions St Helens 28-14, following the game the RFL & Super League made the decision to bring the sport to a halt and as such the First Team players have begun home training programmes. www.castlefordtigers.com April 2020

“It feels very weird and it’s hard sometimes obviously during a lockdown you never think of anything like this happening to you in your lifetime and you might watch a movie about stuff like this. It’s surreal that it’s happening, I’ve got two little kids at home and they’re keeping me and my partner Tam very busy. “It’s hard to get out of the house of course and do a bit of training but it’s our job and without knowing how long this could potentially go on for, we have to keep ourselves in good shape and safe. Plus, we get to enjoy being around our families, we’re away from them a lot due to training or matches but now we can try to enjoy this time with them whilst we wait to see what’s going on.” The club wishes everyone well during these unprecedented times and urges that everyone also follow the guidelines and advice issued by both the Government and the NHS. For the Tigers it’s a shame that they cannot keep their momentum going after an impressive victory as Cheyse discusses. “It’s annoying, we’ve started the season well and joint top of the table and I know it’s early days but a good start

is what helps out at the back end of the year. For it to come to a halt is disappointing but it is what it is, this isn’t just Super League either it’s around the whole world and we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do and come through it all together.”

“It’s just whatever floats my boat really and I’m not a person who cares too much, I’m the one with all the bad haircuts not like the goodlooking ones like the young fellas have. I haven’t got time for that sort of stuff so it’s either mohawk, mullet or clean shave it doesn’t really worry me. As for my beard it’s just about me being a bit lazy sometimes it takes me so long to shave it, so I just leave it.”

Following his try against St Helens Cheese emerged from the bundle of rugby league players around him to celebrate with a fist in the air and his fresh new look firmly on display, a bald look. “I think I’m getting to that stage where I probably will shave it all off, me and a few of the boys did a charity thing a few weekends back for Macmillan Cancer Support and cut our hair which was the main reason but I sort of like it shorter. I think it was about £750 raised just that night between me, Daniel Smith, Nathan Massey and a few other people down there and we were happy to get behind it.” The ’Bald Blair’ is probably the sixth or seventh hairstyle Cheyse has tried since coming over to the UK. In the last twelve months he’s had a rattail, a mohawk, a mullet and anything else he was willing to try!

Once rugby league action returns the Tigers will be looking to keep up the standard they set against St Helens and then kick on to fight for a piece of silverware. There is no doubt that lifting a trophy with Castleford is one of Blair’s career aims.

LISTEN TO CHEYSE SPEAK MORE ABOUT HIS TIME AT CASTLEFORD SO FAR, HIS MOVE TO THE SECOND ROW AND ANSWERING FAN QUESTIONS ON TIGER TALK PODCAST, AVAILABLE ON TIGERS TV.

“There’s three bits of silverware up for grabs with the Grand Final, the Cup and the shield and tt’s always in the back of our mind and that’s why we play the game and what we want to achieve, winning those big games like the one against Saints just shows the belief that we have in the team and what we can do. Like I said before that performance is our minimum standard now and we need to still improve from that and continue to get better and better.”

COACH’S CORNER IT’S QUITE SURREAL AT THE MOMENT WRITING THIS PIECE WITH NO PROSPECT OF ANY GAMES BEING PLAYED IN THE NEAR FUTURE, AND INDEED WITH OUR WHOLE COUNTRY IN A LOCKDOWN SITUATION. FIRST AND FOREMOST, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE TIGERS FAMILY FOR YOUR SUPPORT I WISH EVERYONE WELL DURING THIS UNPRECEDENTED SITUATION THAT WE ARE FACED WITH. In our last performance against St Helens I thought we were superb in every department; I had really challenged the players in a number of areas, and they went after those specific elements of our performance in a detailed and aggressive manner. There will no doubt be people who will point to St Helens having lost a couple of games so far this season, however there is no doubt our performance against the Champions was as comprehensive as anyone has put in against them I think since we beat them in 2017 in the Challenge Cup, also down at The Jungle. Some of our individual performances were world class, but it was as the team as a whole that I was most impressed with and what we were able to do on the day. Particularly our defensive effort was superb, St Helens are renowned for what they are able to do from a line speed perspective. The fact that we were able to match and beat them in this area said a massive amount for the commitment and desire of our players, to show that we are challengers in every way this season. Alongside this we attacked with

a confidence and a belief that allowed us to put a significant amount of pressure on their defensive line, there is no doubt in my mind that with a little bit more accuracy the score line would have been much greater. As we have no games to look forward to at the moment and indeed the players are not training as a team I thought I’d take this opportunity to explain to you what the boys are doing as it stands to keep themselves ready for when the current situation is over. After finding out that we were unable to train in a group situation we quickly met as a coaching team and outlined the individual needs for every player within our squad in order to maximise our ability to get the best out of this period. We then gave all our players different pieces of equipment from our gym; the players were then given an individual programme utilising the equipment that they have in order to work on their specific areas of development. Obviously, it requires a great deal of trust between the coaches and the players, but I am supremely confident that our players are so focused they will be applying their programmes to the letter. No-one knows what will happen as we move through and out of this crisis that the whole world is faced with at the moment, I hope that when things do get back to normality that rugby league as a sport and of course Castleford Tigers as a club will continue to grow and thrive as both so truly deserve. Once again stay safe, and I look forward to seeing you when we get back on track.

Tigers Physical Disability Rugby League Q&A PDRL Captain Nick Kennedy has been a mainstay of the Tiger’s PDRL side since the team’s first games in 2018. With PDRL being an ever-increasing presence and ahead of the brand new season in 2020, the Tigers Captain tells us about the early days of Castleford Tigers PDRL, the growth of the game in England, and the team’s ambitions for 2020. So Nick, tell us a little bit about how you came to be involved with the Tigers Physical Disability Rugby League team? And give us a short history of PDRL at the Tigers? Purely by chance actually, a friend started playing at Leeds and suggested I might come down. I um’ed and ah’ed about it, as I didn’t really have a background in rugby at all, I’d not played league before. Then I decided to drop someone at Cas a message and was down the next day at training and played my first game three days later at The Jungle, against Leeds and ever since then I’ve been hooked! The progression has been remarkable: We’ve gone from having a mixed physical and learning disability team that started with coach Neil Barnaby and Andy Lynch in 2018, to having two separate teams for PDRL and LDRL, and now numbers are looking so good, we’re hoping to register two physical disability teams for the upcoming league in 2020. We’ve gone from strength-to-strength not just with numbers, but also the quality of rugby we play. Can you explain a little bit about how the laws and setup of the PDRL game? And What makes it accessible to a broad range of people with differing physical disabilities? There are both contact and non-contact roles which allow for players with all types of physical disability to find a place within the team to really contribute to the overall team effort. Certainly, the non-contact roles offer the opportunity to people who thought they’d never be able to play rugby and certainly how they are used tactically can often be crucial to deciding a game!

Ultimately, we’re a tight group of players who support each other on and off the pitch. We’ve been pushing each other through our strength and conditioning in the pre-season (Thanks Coach Neil!) and now we’re moving more onto technique, with some sessions in the wrestle room and then we’ll finish with some fieldwork and drills to make sure we’re ready from the very first minute of that very first game! Finally, what are your aims for the coming season? So last year after making the semi-finals of Super League, it was great to get that far but also gutting to miss out on going further. This year, we definitely want to get our hands on some silverware and improve on where we got to last season. As a team, that’s really our main goal: To make sure we win this year. As well as this, the pitches are a little narrow to reflect the reduced nine-a-side line-ups, and games are also shorter, which allows us to maintain the intensity and hopefully keep the quality of the rugby up to a high standard. PDRL in England got a big boost to its profile thanks to Adam Hills’ “Take His Legs” documentary, how has the game grown over here in just the short amount of time it’s been running?

But on a more personal level, I’m really hoping to be selected for the England Community Lions Squad along with as many of my fellow Tigers as possible, I’m hoping we can get a big contingent of our players picked for the national team and have some significant representation for Cas Tigers within the England setup.

Oh it’s been massive! To go from a series of friendlies between four teams in 2018 when the sport was first finding its feet, to a fully formed league in 2019, and through to 2020 where we are now with a league of ten teams has been fantastic. Additionally there are talks of a possible origin series, Yorkshire vs. North-West, and also of a “Celtic Series” between the home nations, which can only help to illustrate the growth of the game and should set the stage ahead of the 2021 World Cup where there will be a full slate of international PDRL fixtures alongside the main tournament. What do you personally get out of playing Physical Disability Rugby League? And especially for a club such as Castleford Tigers? It’s an honour to wear the black and amber, and to lead out a really great group of lads as part of the team. Playing in front of the Cas fans has been a really rewarding experience: They’ve given us such a fantastic reception whenever we’ve played. Personally, representing Cas as part of the curtain raiser at Super League’s Grand Final at Old Trafford was something I’d never thought possible before being part of this team and that says it all really: The experiences afforded to me by being part of this team have just been phenomenal and building a team identity and getting to know the lads has been a key element of that. How is the mood in the team? You’ve all been hitting pre-season pretty hard and must be ready for the season to get underway!? For the start of this new season, we’ve had quite a few new players join who haven’t been to a PDRL game before, so the mood’s one of anticipation and excitement. People can’t wait to get out on the field and have their first game.

Finally, we really pride ourselves on inclusion and on giving opportunities to players who thought they would never be able to play, and that’s where this second team, a developmental side will be crucial in allowing people to play and progress within the sport, so growing that’s as big a goal as any really: As much as we do want to win, we also want to be able to have as diverse a group of players as possible and offer the experience to as many people that want to come and play rugby and represent Castleford as we possibly can. Thanks Nick, Good luck to you and the boys for the coming season!

CLUB OPERATIONS UPDATE Castleford Tigers’ stadium The Mend-A-Hose Jungle will be closed to all but a skeleton number of staff as part of the ongoing COVID-19 prevention measures. • Can all club inquiries be made by contacting: info@castigers.com – we ask that people are patient in waiting for responses.

TIGERS SMASH FUNDRAISING TARGET FOR LOCAL HOSPICE Castleford Tigers have smashed the club’s target for fundraising for charity partner The Prince of Wales Hospice. In 2019, the team hoped to raise one day of running costs for the Hospice, a target they have nearly doubled. In March, The Prince of Wales Hospice announced the fundraising total from last year’s partnership with Castleford Tigers as a whopping £12,517. This by far exceeds their aim of raising £7,660 which would fund the Hospice fora day and brings their total to date to £23,706. Craig Jeffels, Commercial Manger at the club, took on The Great North Run, contributing £1,500 to the year’s target, he said: “I wanted to also have a personal impact on our club’s fundraising efforts. I have seen first-hand the work that all at The Prince of Wales Hospice put in, on a daily basis, and also how much it costs to run the Hospice.” Talking about the level of support the Hospice receives from Castleford Tigers, Jessica Poole, Corporate Partnerships Assistant, said: “The team are fantastic to work with and are so enthusiastic about supporting the Hospice. Our patients love to see the team on their visits, it really brightens their day, and their fantastic fundraising efforts will go a long way in helping us to support people in our community who need our care. I look forward to working with the team in 2020 and can’t wait to hear what they have planned.”

TIGERS TO TAKE ON YORK IN THE CUP Castleford Tigers have been drawn an away fixture against York City Knight in the Sixth Round of the Coral Challenge Cup. Further details will be confirmed in due course after the suspension of the 2020 season. Castleford’s match against York City Knights promises to be an interesting one as the two clubs are dual-registration partners this season. The Knights secured a play-off finish in the Betfred Championship in 2019, their first year in the competition following promotion from League One under the coach James Ford. Former Tigers player Chris Clarkson joined the side for the 2020 season so it could see Castleford face off against Clarkson too.

• The Tigers will remain active across the club’s social media feeds, Tigers TV and the website. • Castleford Tigers Foundation programmes and activities are suspended until further notice.

• Both our retail stores at Carlton Lanes & Xscape Yorkshire have been closed until further notice. • Retail orders can still be made online at castlefordtigers.com/ shop/ • Castleford Tigers Daily Draw continues unaffected by the latest precautions around the club.

The club would like to thank Castleford Tigers supporters for their patience and understanding during this period of uncertainty, we also urge everyone to follow the latest Government advice of social distancing, staying home and washing your hands regularly.

SANDERSON SIGNS WITH CAS Castleford Tigers have signed 21-year-old Jack Sanderson for the rest of the 2020 season with an option for next year too. The utility back was with Hull FC last season and was out of contract with the club at the end of the year but despite this he was invited to be a part of the Black & Whites pre-season, meaning he joins Castleford fully fit and raring to go. “I’m delighted to be here, I’ve come from Hull FC where things didn’t work out but I got an opportunity to come down here and I’m really excited for what the future holds. So far I’ve only been here a couple of days and it seems like such a good club to be a part of and I’m looking forward to getting started,” Jack said about joining the Fords. Head Coach Daryl Powell said: “I’m really pleased to add a young, exciting outside back to our squad for the remainder of the season and it gives Jack

an opportunity to show us how good he can be. “I know he’s got a lot of potential and I’m looking forward to working with him. “Jack adds even more competition to our outside back slots and he can play wing, centre and fullback. When a player has the versatility to play three different positions it helps massively. “He’ll start in the Reserves initially but once he gets some training under his belt with us we’ll take things from there.”

a word from the

captaIn We find ourselves in unprecedented times where the whole world is affected by coronavirus, with all the restrictions that have been implemented by the Government life has dramatically changed for us all. Saying that, I send my best wishes out to everyone and hope you and your families are safe and well. Regarding the Cas Tigers playing group, we like the majority of people are working from home which sounds strange for rugby league players but we have all been given home fitness programmes to keep us in shape for when the time finally comes round for the competition to finally start up again. Dividing our gym equipment up has been an interesting challenge for the coaches to do and then create individual programmes depending on the gym equipment we’ve been given. I’m personally run off my feet with three kids at home that need home schooling, feeding and entertaining so when I get the opportunity to get in garage to do some exercise I snap at the chance. There are so many questions regarding how the sport will look come the end of this pandemic, there is no doubt now it will look different. I don’t know the answers to these questions but all clubs are being hit incredibly hard financially and unfortunately we aren’t a sport blessed with unlimited resources but I can tell you all the clubs and governing bodies are working hard to make sure we come out of the other side in a place where Super League can continue. On a more positive note I’d like to touch upon our last performance against St Helens at the Jungle. We went into that game knowing

it would be our last game for a while and we wanted to make it a special performance. Saints have obviously set the standard for the last two seasons and therefore are the benchmark for teams to beat. We set out to make a statement in that game and I’m pretty sure we did; it was easily our most pleasing performance for a while and it shows what our squad is capable of. I’m gutted we don’t have the chance to kick on after that win but of course we all understand the situation at hand. Either way we’re in a strong position once we start back up again. Our club is no different to other businesses out there and I wanted to say a massive thank you to all our supporters that have signed up for the ‘Club 1926’ initiative online. To all our supporters, please keep safe and make smart decisions, the sooner this is all over the sooner we can get RL back. All the best

JON WELLS

DIRECTOR OF RUGBY

Hello everyone, Well, this is a very different piece to write – and for you to read I’m sure. Indeed, at the time of writing we are three days into our nationwide lockdown, a measure put in place to try and keep people apart, slow the spread of COVID-19 and hopefully alleviate the pressure on our national health service so we can effectively deal with this virus and save lives. No doubt you will have heard all of this countless times over the last couple of weeks, so let me give you an update on life in and around the Club over the last fortnight. From looking at this as a novel and interesting distraction, to where we are now is a huge shift that society has had to take in such a short space of time; and that is apparent too inside the Club. The players are now training at home, working through individual programmes set by our strength and conditioning team; we are keeping in touch as many of you will be via Skype and Zoom and all of the benefits of living in a social media world (never thought I’d say that!). If we look specifically at rugby league, then naturally there are plenty of questions and not many answers at the moment. What we do know is that we won’t be resuming the season any time soon – best guesses at the moment point to the end of June or early July. Obviously this poses huge issues for the whole game and I have heard plenty of ideas concerning the condensing of the season in order to retain some credibility to SLXXV. There are questions too about the future of our Club and the game in general. The “top office” personnel here are working tirelessly to try and ensure there is a Castleford Tigers for you to support when this is all over – this is our greatest challenge but we are a strong unit here so I have faith. I would like to make special mention at this time to our Club doctors, Nick Raynor and Rishi Dhand, both of whom have been working on the front line since this pandemic established itself in the UK. They are doing an amazing job under huge pressure and we are all really proud of them, now more than ever. But that feeling extends also to any of you out there who are working at the coal face of this huge national emergency; whether that is within the NHS, or as one of our key workers who are keeping everything going. You are genuine heroes and we salute you. Finally, and most important of all, is the health and wellbeing of our town, our community and the link between us. I’ve said this before but it seems to carry greater weight at this time. The Club is central to this town, the pulse, the heartbeat for many; but the same is also true. The town, and it’s health and wellbeing and togetherness is essential to the survival of this Club. So, despite our short term limitations, let’s keep one another in our thoughts – and when this is all over, let’s celebrate like we haven’t done before! See you on the other side. Stay safe, and we love you all.

Anfield on home programmes, Coronavirus and WhatsApp group! THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK HAS PUT A TEMPORARY STOP TO SPORTS ACROSS THE GLOBE - INCLUDING RUGBY LEAGUE. The Women’s Super League is just one of the numerous competitions which have been initially suspended until April – and possibly even further! Castleford Tigers Women were gearing up for a huge season opener against St. Helens however, the postponement means they will have to wait before kicking off the 2020 campaign. Head coach Lindsay Anfield admitted this is an unprecedented disruption nevertheless, the players have everything they need to keep fit ahead of their first game – whenever that may be. She said: “We’re really lucky that we have a good strength and conditioner who has given all the girls home programmes to do in their own time. We’re keeping on top of them to make sure they’re keeping their fitness up and their strength. Gyms are not an option but a lot of the girls do have stuff at home.” The former England international added that there is a WhatsApp group which helps to monitor the progress her players are making away in their spare time. “We’ve given them all a ball to do some core skills and ladders,” said

Anfield. “We’re keeping on top of them but obviously it’s up to them to make sure the work they did in preseason doesn’t go to waste.” There is an aura of unpredictability when it comes to Super League and Championship clubs and their financial situations during this season suspension. However, as the women’s game is still amateur and staff are generally volunteers, this isn’t considered a major issue. Anfield said: “Financially it won’t really affect us. We don’t make any money from playing rugby. The sponsors have invested in sponsoring the players and sponsoring the shirt but I just hope they get value for money later on in the year.” When asked about the communication with the RFL, the Castleford coach admitted her side have been told to suspend all team training sessions. The head coach added that the team has received plenty of information from Castleford club doctor Nick Raynor saying: “We’ve been getting regular updates from the doctor at Castleford. He’s been giving us specific advice on what we should and shouldn’t be doing to ensure the welfare of the players.”

Venue: De Lacy Academy Castleford Tigers Women cruised to a 70-4 victory in their pre-season game despite fielding a much-changed side. Ten first-team players were unavailable for selection after competing in the Yorkshire versus Lancashire Origin game. Nevertheless, the Tigresses managed to put together a strong display and started brightly as Rhiannion Marshall scored the first of her five tries in the opening seven minutes. The loose forward powered down the right wing and touched down to open the scoring. Ten minutes later, 16-year-old Eva Izumi scored a try on her debut as the home side extended their lead to 8-0. Leah Jones missed her first two conversions but there were no mistakes on her third attempt which came after Lucy Eastwood’s try in the 23rd minute.

Leah Jones Q&A

CATALANS DRAGONS 36-18 CASTLEFORD TIGERS

Welcome to Cas, how does it feel to be here? Obviously it’s fantastic to be here, fantastic move. Playing against Castleford last season – they were pretty much the best team we came up against all year. So being here is fantastic for me. What was your reason for leaving Bradford and joining Cas? In pre-season I wasn’t able to commit to Bradford probably as much as they would have wanted me to. Obviously when the team selection came around I didn’t make that selection. Wanting to still play this season I started looking at other teams. I contacted Lindsay and she was happy to give me a trial at training, and here I am. What have you made of the atmosphere here at Cas? It’s fantastic. When you play against Castleford you always think ooof… Castleford. Because they’re so successful. They train hard, they work hard and they earn what they get. It’s hard to like people that are that good at anything and everything pretty much. So coming here has been fantastic. The girls have been very welcoming, everyone has been really friendly and that’s made the transition so much easier. For me it has been a big step but one that I have not regretted. You came into RL following a glittering career in football, tell us about it. That was many years ago! I’m from a football background and I only really started playing RL three years ago. Can you tell us who you played for?

wanted to challenge myself. I like to keep physically fit so I had to find something that was I found challenging and something that was mentally stimulating for me. That’s what brought me to rugby. One of my best friends used to play rugby union so she said ‘do you fancy going and giving rugby a go’ and I was like ‘yeah, but I’m not playing any of that union stuff because I don’t understand it.’ So that’s how I got into rugby that way. What about the transition from RL to football, what’s that been like? The physical aspect has been brutal. You’re used to really hard preseasons in football, you do a lot of running. But, the contact element of rugby is just… you can’t even explain or expect it at all. It’s way harder than I ever thought it would be. I always just thought rugby was catching a ball but definitely not! Looking ahead to this season, do you think we’re in a position to target silverware? Definitely. I think Cas were very unlucky not to win it last year. Based on all the performances throughout the season, I think they were the best team in the league. Obviously, they were unable to get that final push at the end of the season. Going forward this year, it would be fantastic to win some silverware. With the girls that are in the team, there is no reason why we shouldn’t.

continued from page 27...

Muddy conditions at De Lacy Academy certainly didn’t help the flow of the game as errors became evermore frequent. Nevertheless, with ten minutes remaining of the first half, the Tigresses were able to add three more tries courtesy of Marshall, Emma Lumley and Millie Walsh. It didn’t take long for the home side to extend their lead in the second half as Lumley powered over in the first minute after the restart Then, two more efforts from Marshall plus a debut try for Nottingham star Sophie Todd extended Castleford’s lead to 54-0. Leah Jones then added a couple of tries to her name as she rounded off an impressive debut outing. Just before the end, Marshall added one more effort to her tally however, Castleford were unable to keep a clean sheet with York getting over the whitewash in the final move of the game. Speaking after the 70-4 victory Lindsay Anfield said: “It was great to give our young players an opportunity today. With ten of our girls away on Origin duty everything worked out quite well as everybody has managed to get some minutes under their belts one way or the other. “I would like to thank York for coming down. They also included some new girls in their team and they showed great heart by never giving up. I wish York all the best for the upcoming season.”

Yeah, I played for Charlton Academy when I was younger. I went to college at the same time. When they folded I went to Millwall. We had some successful seasons at Millwall. We finished quite high up in the league – obviously, before the Super League was the Super League… that makes me sound really old. I played for Northern Ireland since I was 14 and obviously moved up but yeah. It come to an end for me with football I think I lost the enjoyment for it. I spent a year out and then www.castlefordtigers.com April 2020

Classy Cas down champions C

astleford Tigers beat defending champions St Helens following a superb performance in the Betfred Super League.

With a flurry of fixtures suspended due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the eyes of the sporting world fell on the Mend-A-Hose Jungle and the Tigers didn’t disappoint with a ruthless display seeing them rack up a 28-14 victory. Cas went into the game eager to make up for a last-minute defeat to Warrington last time out and they were able to recall winger James Clare as he overcame his bout of illness. England international Liam Watts also returned to the front row after missing out last Friday with a finger injury, whilst Saints were close to full-strength themselves with influential full back Lachlan Coote back in the side and setting up two tries. However, the game was dominated by Daryl Powell’s men for large periods and they got off to a flyer early on to set up the foundations for an impressive win built on a game plan of sending plenty of ball to their dominant right edge. Winger Derrell Olpherts had a score chalked off for an obstruction in the build-up early on but Cas persevered and the first points of the contest game down that side when Peter Mata’utia crashed over from Danny Richardson’s short pass on the last tackle. Richardson added the extras against his former club and better was to come for the home side as they stretched their advantage at the end of the first quarter. This time the field position came following great work from Cheyse Blair, who worked hard at marker to force an error from James Roby, and the Tigers again went at the same edge for their second score, Olpherts not to be denied this time after he finished off lovely hands from Richardson, Mata’utia and Jordan Rankin to make it 10-0. A high shot on Rankin saw Saints prop Matty Lees sent to the bin as the game reached the half-hour mark and Cas continued their hot streak with a third score of the afternoon. Skipper Michael Shenton teed up the chance with a searing run down the left touchline and more good work from Jake Trueman on the next tackle created the space for quick hands to the right where Olpherts acrobatically touched down for his second try of the contest, the video ref giving the nod on a wonderful finish. Tommy Makinson pulled a score back with the final play of the half and the Fords did well to survive a further three consecutive sets at the start of the second as Saints came on strong

before the pendulum swung back in Cas’ favour when Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook was binned for a late and high shot on Richardson as the half back got away a high kick. The Tigers then rode another spell of pressure from the defending champions before striking a decisive blow. It was Cheyse Blair this time who capitalised on more good play down that heavily targeted right flank, the Australian switching to the centre position following a head knock for Mata’utia for the second consecutive match and powering to the line after another flowing passing move.

Richardson again couldn’t find the target with the boot from a difficult position out wide but two quickfire penalties from the scrum half put the Tigers 22-4 in front heading into the final 10 minutes.

Jack Welsby and Luke Thompson pulled back late consolations for the away side but a try from Trueman five minutes from time was enough to seal the spoils in front of a jubilant Wheldon Road End.

MASSEY ON SETTING STANDARDS AFTER SAINTS WIN

CASTLEFORD’S #14 REVIEWS THE VICTORY OVER ST HELENS AND DISCUSSES THE TEAM WANTING TO KEEP THEIR STANDARDS HIGH MOVING FORWARD. 2019 Super League champions St Helens are a very strong rugby league side as was reflected by their dominance last season, but with both Cas and Saints wanting to bounce back from close defeats the Round 7 clash at the MendA-Hose Jungle between the two clubs was bound to be a main event match. The Fords were victorious 28-14 with their best performance of the campaign so far and Nathan Massey wants the team to perform at that high standard in every match. “I think it was the first time we stuck to a game plan this year and it all came together so good with a brilliant performance in the first half especially, going into the second we got a bit looser but across the 80 minutes it was great and set the standard we want for this season,” he said. “We talk a fair bit about our own standards on the field and what level we want to play at every week and we spoke after a tough loss to Warrington where we should have walked away with some points but ultimately didn’t deserve it. So, the performance against Saints is what our standard needs to be, game to game throughout the year.”

If you have seen this week’s Inside Super League you will have got a behind the scenes look at a Castleford Tigers training session ahead of the game against the Saints in which Head Coach Daryl Powell speaks about the team’s line speed needing to be quicker. Fast forward to the game itself you can see his words in practice were placed onto the field by the players.

38

April 2020 www.castlefordtigers.com

“We had a goal to beat them at line speed which we might have lacked a little in previous matches and it meant we really went after them, I think that showed by putting them under pressure with that full first half performance. “We need to start games big and we hadn’t this year up to that point so against St Helens it was our best start of the season, and so coming back to our own standards we need to stick to that moving forward.” Castleford’s right-edge has been transformed for 2020 with Danny Richardson linking with Mike McMeeken, Peter Mata’utia in his new centre position and Derrell Olpherts on the wing. That edge has started very strongly with Olpherts scoring six tries, he along with the other new recruits this season have settled in well with the rest of the squad as Massey discusses.

circumstances so credit to the fans who came to help us through the game and those who couldn’t or didn’t we understand totally why. Playing behind closed doors is not something we want to do and I don’t think it would be good for the game but hopefully moving forward we can still keep playing and do it in front of our fans as we go through the year.” *** Keep up to date on Castleford Tigers activity on the club’s website and social media channels. ***

“Credit to Danny Richardson performing how he did against his old team, George who’s new is going great but I thought Big Mikey (McMeeken) was a menace too. Our mix of lads is really good and it’s a good balance, we’re still learning how everyone comes together to play but we’ve shown we’re starting to gel a bit and in upcoming games we should show how well we can perform.” COVID-19 better known as coronavirus has brought the season to a halt with a suspension in place, the First Team players continue to train but now at home with individual programmes. Despite changes Nathan is confident the Tigers will prepare strongly for whoever it is they will take on next. “It is what it is and completely out of our control and whatever happens moving forward happens, hopefully we can keep pushing on and build on the Saints win, we’ll do our best to prepare for whenever the next fixture arrives.” It’s up in the air as to when Fords fans will next be able to cheer on the team at The Mend-A-Hose Jungle but Nathan paid credit to the people who attended the Sunday match against St Helens, and speaks of his preference of playing in front of supporters. “I think our turnout at the Saints game was really great given the www.castlefordtigers.com April 2020
