312 AN UNUSUAL AND RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A FOREIGN ENTERTAINER Unsigned, wood netsuke Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A quite unusual and impressive netsuke depicting a foreigner, most likely a south sea islander as he wears only a loincloth, as an entertainer. He has a rope tied around his forehead and is holding a rattle (shakujo) in his right hand and a fan behind his back. The movement of the composition is achieved masterfully, and the amusing facial expression is crafted very well. The wood is of a very good color with a fine patina and is accentuated for effect. Natural himotoshi and inscription in the back. HEIGHT 7.9 cm Provenance: From the collection of the late Barry Davies, by repute. Condition: Very good condition with fine patina.
