284 AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SHISHI STATUE SIGNED TOMOKAZU Signed Tomokazu, ivory netsuke Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) An amusing ivory netsuke of a Shishi statically standing upright like the statues that flank the entrances of Buddhist shrines and temples. The glaring inlaid eyes make the statue almost seem like it has come alive. The guardian lion has its mouth opened, and a curly mane and bushy tail accentuated with ink.
