Helping a town best use their grant money

Phase-able Design+Client Approval

Landscape Architecture as a profession is an exploration for answers. Each project requires an understanding of site and context. Concepts at the intersection of program and reality by melding imagination, budget, and evolving needs of multiple parties. I look to our future because I see society embracing landscape architecture and letting the profession advance society. Our ability to combine a technical understanding of the built environment, existing ecological environments, create spaces that inspire people, capacity to work with new technologies and other professions is how we uniquely improve the world. I bring to life client visions and present new ideas to advance the progress of my professional working environments. As I grow I look forward to helping shape the future of landscapes and the integration of technology into our work.

Carving a regional center from suburban blight

Town LifeCLIFTON In one of the remaining rural vestiges of Fairfax County, Virginia lies the Town of Clifton: a historically small town revamping it’s downtown. Using grants from the state and federal levels, it is phasing in improvements. At LPDA we are helping the town understand how the changes will impact their town. Of utmost importance is the establishment of a material + planting palette through the streetscape that is notable, will survive, and maintainable by the town and state.

To explain these elements we produced 2D diagrammatic plans and 3D renderings (with large portion of the project, important for the town, is understanding how unchanged power/telephone lines do not change with all these changes. Due to VDOT restraints there could only be one hardscape option, but htere are two planting options: one focusing on shrubs and one with a perennial focus.

ION InternationalCD SET Ion International is a skate rink opening on the border of the Town of Leesburg and Loudoun County. This is one of many projects that recussicated after the recession. The coding plan here had to accommodate the Leesburg planting code, Loudoun County planting code, and maintain a cohesive look. The biggest challenge of this job was meeting canopy coverage when the Town of Leesburg mandated no tree taller than 40 feet tall (site is close to an airport), requiring a greater number of smaller trees where easements and trails limit planting areas.

Modern MixANALYSIS

A new client approached us looking for a modern design unifying their landscape. We quickly analyzed their residence. We took note of the lack of plantings, privacy, central places, and shade and we centered our new hardscapes on the new deck and new front entrance. We used uniform square slabs to unify the centers through the space. The design was so successful the client ramped up from a multi-phase installation to a full project install that resulted in a multi-center backyard for their growing family to enjoy built in 2015. GeometricDESIGN We often renovate a client’s entire landscape and reconcile existing elements. Here we needed to connect a boathouse on the lake, house, and existing circular driveway. The new lakefront patio, shown here, includes an outdoor kitchen with bar counter, softscaped ramp, terraced wall seating, and a custom fireplace that blends into adjacent outcropping walls. The project was completed in the summer of 2016 with the rest being finished in 2017. The fireplace was a last-minute addition. I lead the research, design, and estimating process to ensure accurate construction.

Graphics[LPDA] Throughout my career I have had the pleasure of creating graphics for each company I’ve worked for. Here are some of my favorites through the years. At LPDA I was asked to create graphics for their trails. LPDA has worked on many miles of trails, but how do you graphically make them interesting and realistic? Using existing site images, stylized aerial images, and NPS icons reminiscent of older NPS posters there is a modern take on the classic trail. This image here can be printed as large as 24x36 or as small as letter sized with great legibility. Not everyone is familiar with the capabilities of Design/Build companies. Piala’s had the same problem many have: explaining themselves to potential customers.. This sales sheet is handed out at the store, shows the company attends, or events the company puts on. The clientele in the region range from traditional to those with a modern flair. To maintain a wide appeal these page set-up uses the classic company wave with a geometric body and modern overlapping text/image. InSite Landscape is a modern company that has a wide user base. It can be difficult to create a single document showing the design sensibility of a company with the design range. Using the trend of tessellated polygons to organize a page, a natural opportunity arose of using two different sized elements to alternatively name and illustrate industries the company works with.

THESISTHEORY Democracies are complex organisms. In the US we have a plurality of people with a many needs coming together to govern themselves. People live in different housing, a variety of commutes, with unique social needs. In our environments this is about providing multiple options; housing, transport, and public spaces. A site to demonstrate these ideas would need pre-existing transport options, existing housing stock, and the capacity for new development.

Readings/Illustrator

Democracy Diagram

Landscape Diagram

Research started with definitions of democracy, exploring how those concepts exist in landscapes, and expanding on them to define a town center for Woodbridge, Virginia. Allowing disparate community’s paths to cross in their day to day lives is critical. A diverse population can naturally be exposed to itself everyday, preventing groups from incidentally isolating themselves in overly decentralized environments.

THESISANALYSIS Woodbridge, Virginia is a suburban, decentralized area in Prince William County planned for development. The area has a train station into DC, highway, river access, exists in a regional vacuum of town-centers, and has blight decreasing existing potential. I determined what existing structure to maintain, remove, potential centers, natural barriers, etc. The end result created a mixed use center and a main street that intersects the entire site with gradual density changes. THESISDESIGN The core concept of the new Woodbridge is a central road traveling through a gradient of density with a dense, multi-use center adjacent the train station. Communities are formed by barriers such as existing terrain or main roads. Each community has the amenities they need such as schools and public squares to be resilient. Concept

SHANGHAICITY

Shanghai 2040 was a cash prize student competition to imagine Shanghai in 2040. The multinational team consisted of individuals from China, Columbia, the Czech Republic, Germany, and the US. Our core of the Shanghai 2040 design is a city’s center layout, future use of technology for city planning, and augmented reality centers to reduce traffic congestion. We examined the city’s centers, transportation hubs, and the shape of the Shanghai internet to form the future centers. From the existing population we projected future centers and used them to make the gradient on this page.
