Met Kris Verdonck EXHIBITION #1 nodigt Z33 theatermaker en beeldend kunstenaar Kris Verdonck (°1974) uit voor een grote solotentoonstelling. Voor het eerst wordt zijn werk samengebracht in een huis voor actuele kunst. De creaties van Kris Verdonck situeren zich in het grensgebied tussen beeldende kunst en theater, tussen installatie en performance, tussen dans en architectuur. Precies dit grensonderzoek, in combinatie met de actuele, kritische blik van Kris Verdonck op onze maatschappij en wereld plaatsen hem binnen het interesseveld van Z33. De installaties en performances van Kris Verdonck vormen een reflectie op de ‘huidige staat van de wereld’, met zijn milieuproblematiek, ecologische rampen en oorlogen. Facetten van een herkenbare wereld worden vertaald, uitvergroot of naar de oppervlakte gehaald. Het spanningsveld tussen mens en machine, mens en maatschappij en mens en natuur creëert een sfeer van ‘Unheimlichkeit’ of bevreemding in zijn werk. In Z33 focust Kris Verdonck enerzijds op de verwarring en vervreemding van de mens in zijn omgeving. Anderzijds richt hij zich op de verwarring van de wereld zelf waarin de Apocalyps eigenlijk al heeft plaatsgevonden.

Dat laatste beeld krijgt in Z33 gestalte in een nieuw werk: EXOTE. Deze ‘tuininstallatie’ bestaat uit een selectie van de meest invasieve niet-inheemse plant- en diersoorten in België, die een reëel gevaar voor de biodiversiteit, economie en volksgezondheid in zich dragen. EXOTE maakt deel uit van een groter parcours met verschillende reeds bestaande projecties en installaties van Kris Verdonck. Enkele daarvan werden al getoond in de parcoursvoorstelling K, a Society (2010), waarin Verdonck beelden toont uit een Kafkaiaanse maatschappij: overgeperfectioneerd en bevreemdend. In Z33 verhuizen de werken voor het eerst van de theaterruimte naar een context voor beeldende kunst, wat zorgt voor een andere tijds- en ruimtebeleving voor de tentoonstellingsbezoeker. Naast de installaties en projecties in Z33 onderzoekt Kris Verdonck ook de stad als toonplek. In de Hasseltse stedelijke ruimte integreert hij een nachtelijke projectie als een ‘schilderij voor de stad’. With Kris Verdonck – EXHIBITION #1 Z33 is showing the works of theatre maker and visual artist Kris Verdonck (1974) in a major solo exhibition. For the first time his work has been gathered under a single roof in a house for contemporary art. Verdonck’s creations are situated in the transit zone between visual arts and theatre, installation and performance, and dance and architecture. This, combined with Verdonck’s topical, critical view of our society and world, is what brought him to the attention of Z33. Verdonck’s installations and performances are designed to reflect on the ‘current state of the world’, with its environmental problems, ecological disasters and wars. He takes different facets of a world that we recognise, and translates, magnifies or brings them to the surface. The field of tension between man and machine, man and society, and man and nature creates an atmosphere of ‘Unheimlichkeit’ or alienation in his work. In Z33, Verdonck focuses on the confusion and alienation of man in his environment, but also on the confusion of the world itself in which the Apocalypse is already upon us.
Verdonck gives shape to this latter image in Z33 in a new work: EXOTE. This ‘garden installation’ houses a selection of the most invasive alien species (plants and animals) in Belgium, which constitute a genuine threat to biodiversity, the economy and public health. EXOTE is part of a larger route of projections and installations that Verdonck has already created. Some of these were already shown in his work K, a Society (2010), which revolved around images of a Kafka-esque society: over-perfected and unsettling. In Z33, Verdonck’s work will be seen for the first time not in a theatre but in a visual arts context, thus creating a different perception of time and space for the viewer. Along with the installations and projections in Z33, Verdonck also explores the city as an exhibition space, integrating a night projection into the Hasselt urban area as a ‘painting for the city’.
