By including the star of `â&#x20AC;&#x2122;This `Morning,â&#x20AC;? the poet attempts to asserts his heterosexual identity. His eagerness is, of course, a crucial moment, even an aporia, within the text, as one cannot help but doubt his motivation, and read anxiety into his verbal gesticulations. What is Stryderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true sexual orientation? Unconsciously, he places WKHIHPDOHĂ&#x;JXUHLQVWHULOHPDWHrial contexts: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Holly Willoughby [...] you can come and run my barâ&#x20AC;? deadens the feminine sexual elePHQWE\GHĂ&#x;QLQJLWLQWHUPVRID business relationship. The continual replacement of sex with ÂŁs throughout the ballad creates an unbridgable gap between the poet DQGWKHIHPDOHĂ&#x;JXUHRQHWKDWLV never overcome.

Here, the relationship between poet and verse turns towards the metaUHĂ HFWLYHFRQFHSWXDOL]DWLRQWKDWKDVEHFRPHVRFOLFKĂ&#x201A;LQSRVWPRGHUQ works, as Stryder introduces himself and his collaborator Dappy to a list of characters populating the diegesis, referring to himself as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tinchy the generalâ&#x20AC;? and Dappy as his â&#x20AC;&#x153;brother D.A.P.â&#x20AC;? The nature of their poetic FROODERUDWLRQLVFRPSOLFDWHGZKHQ6WU\GHUGHĂ&#x;QHVWKHLUUHODWLRQVKLSDV â&#x20AC;&#x153;clinical.â&#x20AC;? Is this faint hint of unresolved, familial, tension nothing but a IRLOIRUWKHVRQJÂ&#x203A;VFKRUXVWKHFRQĂ LFWHGSRUWUDLWRIPDWULDUFKDOUHMHFtion? Or does it mockingly refer to the purely material concerns that so often drive musical artists together in the capitalist wasteland of popular music? Those preoccupied by the poetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s symbols may maintain, or assume, that what is worth attention on the profoundest level in the work is to be sought in the domes of poetic consciousness, veils of unreality, and caves of gnostic power. The listener herself, then, begins to take RQDSRVLWLRQRIH[FHSWLRQDOUHVSRQVLELOLW\LQWKHEDOODGDVVKHUHFRJQL]HV that the poet demands that she as listener must decipher the paradoxical nature of the M.C.

ses Dappy and Tinchy Stryderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s number one hit â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Space Ship.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;

Dappyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chorus is perhaps the songâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clearest expression of anticapitalist invective. The repeated phrase, â&#x20AC;&#x153; yo i used to think when i was this poor //and now i can have anything i used to wish for // if i lost it all to something i would have to cry // now this is something i would die forâ&#x20AC;? is an obvious dialectical critique of the alienation and intellectual repression often experienced in the transition from master to slave, or, in this case, through the rise to stardom. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;think[ing]â&#x20AC;? subject, though poor, is transformed into an automaton without desire who is now obliged to stake his life for the material wealth that has excluded him from the very process of thought that initially made him human. Dappy complicates his critique of capitalist mores through an apostrophetic appeal to his mother, who has rejected him in assuming that he would never â&#x20AC;&#x153;make itâ&#x20AC;? in the world. The reality of his present success only accentuates his overwhelming, and Freudian, sense of rejection and desire, as he metacritically uses the vehicle of that very success - the rap - to underscore and re-express his obsession with rejection. Dappyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s subsequent HOLVLRQRIGHDWKDQGWKHEHDXWLĂ&#x;FDWLRQRIDPDWULDUFKDOĂ&#x;JXUHLVSHUhaps the most disturbing aspect of WKHVRQJ'DSS\Ă&#x;UPO\DVVHUWVKLV Oedipal attraction to the mother, offering her â&#x20AC;&#x153;a face lift,â&#x20AC;? even though she has just confessed that she has been contemplating the immanence of her own death. It would not be going too far to suggest that there is an element of incestuous and, indeed, necrophiliac desire being expressed in the refrain.
