Cinco de Mayo A Day of Celebration

Volume 3 Issue No. 05

By Staff Writer

Serving the Inland Empire and High Desert Communites

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Battle of Puebla in 1862 and is not Mexico’s independence day like it’s widely thought. The Battle of Puebla took place when France was trying to invade Mexico, and Napoleon’s 6500 men came against 4000 Mexican men in a bloody battle. It is often called Mexican Independence Day in error since Mexico declared its independence on September 16, 1810, some fifty years earlier. While Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Pueblo and some other parts of Mexico, it is not an official national holiday in Mexico. However, it has gained popularity around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more enthusiastically by Mexican descendants in the United States than in its native Mexico. Puebla celebrates Cinco de Mayo with fiestas, dancing, decorations, and food. Women dress in brightly colored dresses, and men wear authentic western clothing to commemorate the holiday. There are parades, Mariachi bands, and people dancing in the streets. Cinco de Mayo is truly a fiesta grande in Puebla. A little about Mexican food, traditional Mexican cuisine is likely to be quite different than expected by nonnatives, and varies vastly from region to region in Mexico. Some areas prepare dishes that many might

consider quite bland, yet others make avid use of spices and hot chile peppers. The earliest Mexican agricultural staples were beans, squash, and chile peppers, with maize/corn arriving some 2,000 years later. Their diet expanded to include avocados, coconuts, papayas, pineapples, prickly pears, tomatoes, manioc, sweet potatoes, peanuts, amaranth, chia seeds, and more varieties of beans. Cinco de Mayo has no limit when it comes to the preparation of delicious Mexican Food. There were different dates used this year in celebrating Cinco de Mayo. We listed just a few of the hundreds of celebrations that went forth this year. On April 15th, The Mariachi Festival was held in conjunction with the Boyle Heights Farmers Market at Mariachi Plaza. Big names and local mariachi bands performed. On April 29th a milelong street fair with music, games, and vendor booths was held in downtown Los Angeles. May 6th Mariachis, a salsa band, folklorica dancers, and children’s crafts shared space with classic, vintage, muscle cars, low riders, trucks, and specialty vehicles at Virginia Park in Santa Monica. May 5th & 6th at noon, the largest Mexican American community in Orange County celebrated with twodays of festivities including carnival rides, games, music, dance, and lots of food on historic 4th Street in downtown Santa Ana. Mark your calendars for next year and join in on the Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

City of Adelanto Helps Local Group Find A New Home

All too often we hear about the corruption of a city or other negative stories about the crime within a city. Well, this story that had its ups and downs but it is amazing what people who care about others along with the city could do together to help the community. The story all started in 2010 in the High Desert City Of Adelanto, an extraordinary woman named Lisa Anderson, was inspired after attending another local kids clothing swap in a neighboring city. Lisa is a woman that regardless of her own occasional struggles always helped others how she could so it was no surprise when she

decided to start her own swap that started off as a teen and adult clothing swap. What she has built through her persistence and love for helping others has been a godsend to many people in the High Desert. “Some of our members come in desperate need of clothing for them or their children, some just enjoy swapping their clothing and then there are also those who only give the clothing they no longer need” said Lisa. Swapping Mamas had their first clothing swap in September of 2010 and since has grown to carry all sizes of clothing from the smallest baby sizes all the way up to Plus sizes and Big and

Tall sizes mens sizes. Swapping Mamas also has a Thanksgiving Basket giveaway where they were able to help many families in need of a Thanksgiving Dinner and a once yearly Christmas toy swap to help those in need with gently used toys to give to their children for Christmas. As always, they are collecting clothes, and shoes but this year they are also motivated to have a large toy swap to help many more families this year than they did last year. “I just keep thinking that people are always clearing out their kids toys and if we can start collecting them now then more families can get help for the holidays”

said Raquel Gregory, a Swapping Mamas volunteer. The first clothing swap was small but the attendance has since grown a lot. “We believe that since one person usually signs in and chooses things for their family the people receiving clothing would be 100150 per monthly or semimonthly clothing swap”, said Christie Martin, a swapping Mamas volunteer. Swapping Mamas helps everyone who comes, regardless if they have an initial clothing donation. “We ask all members to bring what they can and take what is needed for their family. We figure by the second or third swap they attend they should be able to start swapping” Christie added. Since Swapping Mamas is strictly not for profit and no money is ever exchanged they depend on the help of the community and their volunteers to help with supplies like storage totes, trash bags and other needed supplies. The volunteers do some pick ups of clothing, shoes, toys or other small items that people choose to give to help Swapping Mamas members. They have several drop off locations in the High Desert for members who can to drop off at their convenience. Volunteer also sort clothing, sometimes wash clothing, set up and clean up after each swap held. Some volunteers are regular long term volunteers and others volunteer time, which is all appreciated and needed to make the swaps work. “ I know I do a lot on the days of swaps but just wish I could give more. I will be at the next swap even if I have to take the bus.” said Denise Dale, an obviously very dedicated long term Swapping Mamas volunteer. On the March 10, 2012, Lisa and her volunteers got a surprise visit at her home where the swaps were being held. “Code Enforcement came, they were confused as to what we were doing. After explaining it to the Code Enforcement officer he mentioned that

he was not sure if it would be something we could continue to do or if we needed some type of permit to continue. He gave us a card and asked us to speak with someone in the Adelanto City hall who handled business licenses.” said Lisa Anderson. Lisa and the volunteers were worried that the city could stop the swaps that so many depended on. On Monday, March 12th two volunteers went to speak with the person they were referred to speak with and by the end of the discussion the answer was still one that could have put the swaps in jeopardy. One of the volunteers, Raquel Gregory, got in contact with the Mayor to let her know the situation and ask for her assistance. The Mayor quickly replied and let Raquel know that she had forwarded the information to the City Manager. The city Manager called Raquel and set up a meeting to figure things out on Thursday March 15, 2012. “That felt like the longest three days of our lives” said Lisa Anderson. During the meeting with the Jim Hart, City Manager and Rick Gomez, Director of Development Services Lisa and her volunteers were both relieved with ideas brought to them and amazed with the support and generosity of the City of Adelanto. The meeting was a success, the City of Adelanto agreed to allow Swapping Mamas to have the swaps held at the Adelanto Community Center in order to allow the community assistance to continue. “We went prepared for a fight and we were pleasantly surprised by the city’s support for our group and the mission to help our community” said Raquel. To find out more about Swapping Mamas see the website: www.SwappingMamas.com On the website you will find swap dates, drop off locations, pick up requests, a contact form and links to the Facebook page, Facebook Group and the Yahoo Group.

Laptop Locks and Other Tactics: How to Safeguard Your Gadget When Travelling By Cedric Loiselle

Having a laptop on tow when you are travelling may seem like a good idea. Minus the excess baggage, it is pretty convenient to be able to go about your daily computing routine while your miles away from home. But given their popularity, laptops are among the primary targets for theft abroad. Despite how careful you may go about your business, the risk is never minimized, especially if you are vulnerable and alone. You are fortunate if you have installed laptop locks for your gadget. But if you haven’t, here are some recommendations you can use to avert

burglary. 1. Don’t be conspicuous. Avoid using computer bags to house your laptops, because that will just alert and attract the thieves. Use a briefcase, or just place it in your suitcase or travelling bag with a padded cover, so it doesn’t break with movement. Don’t verbalize in public what you carry with you, whether it’s a small notebook or a hundred thousand dollars. That’s just calling out trouble. 2. Use extraordinary passwords. Forget middle names and birthday codes. Think outside the box. You wouldn’t want your important files and bookmarked sites with saved codes to be used by someone else, right? It

would be expedient if you could password protect every important document within your laptop. If you have a hard time remembering the passcodes, just save a copy on your cell phone, or write it down on a piece of paper and keep it your wallet. Don’t put it in with the gadget. You should at least make things a little difficult for thieves when they do manage to steal your stuff. 3. Never leave your laptop anywhere – not in your car or your hotel room. In fact, never take your eyes off your important and expensive belongings. It doesn’t matter if you’re just getting utensils from the restaurant counter, or if there are security details and a lot

of cameras guarding the vicinity, or if you have laptop locks. There’s no assurance that your things will be safe where you leave them. So, just bring them with you wherever you go, and let them be useful for another day. 4. Lastly, if you are savvy enough, encrypt sensitive information. Hide folders and files. See to it that you are the only one who knows where they are and what they contain. This way, if you do lose it, the important business matters that you lose your laptop for won’t be leaked and manipulated. There are also notebook lock devices that you can use to hook it to a secured and unmovable object, so it’s not readily retrieved. There are programs

you can install (that get activated during hacking) to alert you of the device location once it’s stolen, silently recover data or destroy all essential information kept within it. These should help you get all set for that domestic or international travel. Some of the tips may be a bit too much, but remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. What is getting a notebook lock compared to saving yourself from the trouble of reporting the theft to the police, changing all your security codes and losing a year’s workScience Articles, or maybe even more.

Altering Your Approach To Reasoning About Mobile Administration

Many of these individuals are required to keep an eye on systems much like wireless phones in addition to tablet pc's together with the more conventional laptops along with netbooks. Along with the systems themselves, Information technology staff will have to handle telecommunications in addition to data usage products. If you’ve tried to get a modification on your home but were turned down, don’t let that stop you. Yes, the process is about the most weary, stressful endeavor one can be put through, but it will pay off if you keep trying. Don’t get weary and give up; that will only have you wondering whether you would've gotten the modification had you hung in there. I have had personal experience in the same area as have several of my family members and friends. We all had to try again and in doing so, it paid off. . If you’re scared and feel there is nothing you can do, I encourage you to make one more attempt; make one more telephone call to an agency that is named at the end of this article. This agency is government approved, free, and highly respected for its performance. Yes, the process is crazy. You will want to throw your hands up in the air, but don’t. It will require you to take many deep breaths take them because your goal is to stay in your home. The paperwork and information you have to provide is a bear, but take one step at a time. If you don’t have certain documents or you can’t find them, don’t panic. You only have to call or go to your resources: the bank for statements, social security for income, your jobs, and so on. You must

have all of the documents and information that is asked of you. I introduce to our readers and encourage you to make one more call in the effort to getting a modification for your home. I have had the opportunity of meeting and referring others to Linda Jackson from The National Investment DivisionHousing Counseling Agency (NID). NID has received awards for assisting homeowners with modifications. It is known for having excellent relationships with many of the lenders out there. The service is free which means no cost to you. NID has been helping people for years and years. The office is located in San Bernardino, but very few people know about it. There are no crowds of people like NACA has, and so I encourage you to call them, tell them your situation, and make an appointment. The National Investment Division Housing Counseling Agency (NID) is located at 2050 North Vernon Avenue, San Bernardino, CA 92411. The phone number is 9098878700. Ask for Linda Jackson and tell her that Ethel Martin Miller, the publisher of that community newspaper “Yes We Can Newspaper,” suggested you to call because she knows you will help. It is my hope that this information will help all of our readers get your modifications and save your home.

Tips And Common Practices For Project Managers

Nowadays almost any manager uses some kind of project planning software and the reason for this is simple: software can help and ease a lot the work of any person. Many experienced project managers have created over time a knowledge base of tips and tricks that they can use. However novices are not that lucky. They need to gain all these in time. In this article we shall try to present some of the most encountered ones. Keep your project as dynamic as possible Projects tend to move and change in time and for this reason there must be an easy way to update it. If it is created using hard constraints a simple shift in time might actually be a very hard to do operation. Here are some things that you should take into consideration: Use of constraints. Constraints on tasks impose certain restrictions in the scheduling algorithm because it relates to certain dates.

Fixed dates should be avoided as much as possible since this links the project to a certain time period. Instead of using dates to specify the sequence of tasks you should rather think at adding dependencies between them. Creating dependencies. If certain gaps must be created in the sequence of tasks within a project then these should always be represented using dependencies with “leads” or “lags”. This is very useful in case of shifting the project in time. Do not simulate them using false tasks or hard constraints. Using false tasks will result in an increased total work and constraints will make the project to be connected to certain dates. Furthermore dependencies should be avoided to be used to resolve resource overallocations. Task start or finish dates. Manually setting start or end dates for tasks will actually impose constraints on the tasks, therefore limiting the

dynamic nature of your project schedule. The distribution in time should be done naturally using dependencies. In a well done project plan, almost every task is driving another task. If a task is not influenced by other events then it should only depend on the start date or the end date of the project (in case of start to finish scheduling and finish to start respectively). Things to be avoided Task naming. Avoid using duplicate task names since this will increase the ambiguity of the project. In case certain tasks are repeated in multiple phases then appropriate names should be used. Even more a naming convention should be used if possible. Formatting. A consistency regarding formatting data is preferable. This way everyone will better understand the projects. Using different formats and rules for presenting data might get to misunderstanding and confusion. Assigning

resources. When assigning resources to a task it results an amount of work that must be completed by those resources. Milestones and phases are a special type of tasks. Milestones are used to represent deliverables and have no duration while phases are a collections of related activities. For this reason neither should have resources assigned to them. Linking phases. A phase is a collection of tasks. When you say an activity depends on an entire phase that activity depends on all the tasks from that phase. However when a phase depends on another phase things become more complicated since any tasks from the second phase depend on all the tasks from the first phase. This increases the risk of creating circular dependencies. A solution to this problem would be to insert a milestone at the end of the phase and use that for linking.

Phone Answering Services Help Small Businesses to Keep Step with the Competition By Lorraine D

The sheer volume of work needing to be accomplished in the course of a day can quickly overwhelm small business owners. Between producing and marketing the products and/or services of the company, keeping track of the sales and expenditures, executing and monitoring the marketing plan, maintaining the appearance of the building, training and motivating the staff, and taking care of the questions and concerns of the customer, there’s not much wiggle room in the schedule. Many times, taking care of the customer takes up more time than the business can afford. Business owners may want to consider phone answering services to handle their customer concerns. A small business answering service allows business owners to focus on the other areas of their company without neglecting the needs of the customer. A small business answering service can also work with these businesses to increase growth by increasing potentialclient conversion rates. Phone Answering Services Help Businesses Create Satisfied Customers, Increasing Sale Conversion Rates Customer service is a vital part of business management.

Creating satisfied customers should be a primary business goal. Companies that seek to provide their customers with a “real person” rather than voice mail are successful companies. No one enjoys trying to obtain information from a company that continuously greets them with busy signals, recorded messages, and long hold times. People are very busy and it won’t take much to send them searching for another company with more timely service. Phone answering services allows businesses to catch each and every customer call. Service representatives are trained to address every customer concern according to the business’ protocol in a professional manner. Many businesses still hire receptionists to handle customer service calls. While a receptionist can add a personal touch to a small business lobby, he or she may not be able to efficiently handle a multiline telephone system. Thus, the business is back to square one when there was no designated person to handle customer calls. This could mean disgruntled customers and lost business opportunities. Companies will find that a small business phone service will help them keep their customers satisfied. Phone Answering Services Can Relieve Businesses of Administrative Tasks

When phone answering services were used in the past, their role in helping businesses was quite simple — answering the phone and delivering the message. Today, phone answering services bring an array of their own services to the plate. Not only can they handle the business’s customer concerns, they can become an entire servicing department for the company, relieving them of several administrative tasks. This is a cost effective way for small businesses to cover their own servicing needs. Small business answering services can relieve employees of all administrative tasks dealing with customer service. These tasks include the following:Managing and growing the businesses database, Creating a customized script for the business, Communicating in various time zones, Delivering messages speedily in multiple locations and Increasing a company’s bottom line. Many of these services can help small business owners with the organization of their business, enabling them to stay focused on other details. For a small business owner, this could mean expansion and increased sales. Phone answering services create a professional presentation for small businesses enabling them to keep in sstep with the competition.

Success In The Workplace Is All About Attitude And Approach By Kathy Hammond

Whether you're just entering the workforce or have been entrenched for many years or are creating your own business, the world of work is an intrinsic part of all of our lives. And for a relative few, it's not all about the money. Our lives in the work world can take many transitions: As a teenager just entering the work world, it may be to earn enough money to buy a car, clothes, afford dates and for some, earn tuition into college. And along the way, discover if the type of work is one that appeals enough to continue, or indicates the need to try something else. For others, who have taken a chosen path through college and are preparing to enter the work world, their focus will be following their path into positions for which they've studied. Although it's just as possible that along the way, they may discover a penchant for something entirely different. For those who have been entrenched in the work world for many years, it's quite possible that their initial position(s) and intention(s) may have been shaped or even curtailed by the need to earn enough money to support a lifestyle that may include a spouse and maybe children and a mortgage. For others, it's not a rare occurrence that they have taken the lowliest, "entry", position and worked their way up through the workplace and achieved all they desired in terms of personal accomplishment, respect within the workplace and garnered the wealth they need to support whatever their lifestyle. For those who are creating their own business, it's rare that it's done right out of school, but more often a result of experience already gained working for someone else and in the belief that they can earn enough money to support an idea/product/service of their own, as well as support themselves. And hopefully, when it comes to hiring others to support this new business, experience has also been gained as to how to treat employees to get the best from them. Whatever your position in relation to the world of work, one thing is clear Your attitude towards work and/so how you approach it makes all the difference in how well you succeed. You know the old saying about how there are no small parts, only small actors? It's like that in the work world. There are no small positions, only small minds. Regardless your position in the work world, there is always opportunity to improve your lot. So if you foster an attitude that you are not limited to your position, and approach each work day with an open mind and pay attention, you will discover ways that you can go from a sales clerk to store manager in just a few months. Now if you're thinking this sounds a bit like those commercials on tv that are suggesting you can go from a size 22 to a size 10 in a few months with their weight loss product and you think to yourself it sounds too good to be true, perhaps you didn't pay attention to the part, "combined with exercise and a sensible diet". Which is to say, that whether it's losing weight or achieving success in the work world, you will have to pay attention to everything that is going on around you, what you are doing and make a concerted effort to integrate yourself. In other words You will have to work at it. Right now there's a tv commercial touting how you can work at home and buy a new home or earn $7,000 a month in your spare time ... Which does sound exciting, but NOT ONE WORD is said about HOW you can do any of this. Only that there's a website that will show you. If you've been enticed by such "come ons", it's understandable

Everyone one would like to be able to buy a new house or earn lots of money, and there are those who have achieved financial independence and monetary success via the Internet. So if you've gone to this or any other website seeking your fortune, that's nothing to be ashamed about. But if you were believing that such sources would be THE answer to your success, 'time for an attitude adjustment. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OVER NIGHT SUCCESS The only way to achieve success is by planning your work and working your plan. And that's much easier said than done. On and off the Internet. Don't believe the hype that it's "easy", to achieve financial independence and monetary success via the Internet. It's not. In fact, it may very well be even more difficult to make a successful go of it on the Internet as opposed to in the "real", world. Mostly because doing business on the Internet is still a relatively unknown quantity. Whereas in the "real", world there are established ways of building a business and even well established businesses built upon helping others build a business. Sure there are scores of websites designed to encourage you to start building your own business on the Internet, but There are so many different attitudes and approaches towards doing so that it's quite overwhelming and hard to know which ones really work. There have been many people who have lost everything because of following a certain "guaranteed", path of creating a successful business on the Internet. Best advice Don't spend one thin dime or even attempt to start your own business on the Internet until you've taken a good deal of time and done extensive research of what's being presented as THE way to achieve success on the Internet. And if you do achieve a state where you believe that you know what will work for you Be prepared to work, work, work. Establishing and maintaining a viable business on the Internet is no free or easy ride. And if you work in the "real" world, here's the real deal To achieve success from/with/in any position, the first steps you can take are to be at work every day, on time and to agree, without question, to do whatever is asked of you. Of course, you shouldn't do anything unethical, but in today's work world, it's very rare that an employer would even suggest such. Too much corruption and unethical behavior has been exposed and too many organizations have been established to protect people in the workplace for this to be a common occurrence. A key example of practicing a positive attitude and approach regarding your work position: Consider your employer, all the way to the top position, as a person instead of, "THE MAN". A person, just like you, who had to start somewhere, learn the ropes and make the climb to where they are. Then, take a look at the big picture and ask yourself just how much you know to be able to run a company with all its complexities, right down to the process of hiring you. If you consider your superiors as people who have not only earned their positions, but as people who have to continue to earn their positions, which involves a great deal more than your position, you'll find that your attitude and approach towards them and consequently, the experience of working with them, will improve exponentially. So what we're talking about here is learning to adjust your own attitude and approach to become an asset to your workplace, which will naturally benefit you. And by being an asset, those who are in positions to help you advance within the workplace will be more likely to do so.

If you add to this mix a willingness to go the extra step, by volunteering at least your enthusiasm to learn more, do more, then you really will get noticed and yes, promoted, to the level of your incompetence, as the joke goes. See, most people become their own worst enemy within the workplace because of their lackluster attitude and approach. Instead of looking for ways that they can keep their days at work at least interesting, if not exciting, which just naturally leads to advancements, they start watching the clock, goofing off, calling off sick and generally start seeing their position as a dead end job. That's not to say that there aren't times when work positions truly are dead ends, but again, with a better attitude and approach, one can at least make the best of it, and begin looking for another position that may be more satisfying. There are several important benefits of making the most of your current work position while seeking another: It's a fact that it's much easier to find new employment when you're already employed. And It will allow you to give a two week notice, which is regarded as a common courtesy within the work world. Doing so will allow you to leave one position with a positive reference, and prove to your new employer that your attitude and approach is about doing the right thing. NO ONE NEED BELIEVE THEY ARE STUCK IN A DEAD END JOB Even if you're someone who has been at the same workplace without feeling like you're on the "fast track", to improving your lot, but you believe it's better to have a steady job than risk unemployment because you do have responsibilities Take a good, hard, long look at your attitude and approach towards your work position and start thinking in terms of what YOU can do to improve it, instead of lamenting how it's lacking. But, if your efforts do not improve your position, start sending out resumes. Believe it or not, employers of other companies, especially if they're in competition with your current employer, love to "steal", away a long time employee. Such a transition usually is just what you need to achieve the advancements you had been seeking. Then we have the relatively rare individual whose attitude and approach has been to actively participate within their workplace while "absorbing", everything they could until they achieve a state of self confidence that leads them to believe they have what it takes to strike out on their own. It may be with an improved product/service based on their previous work experience, or it may be based on solid research of an idea for a product/service they have happened upon for which they believe there is a need and one they believe they can market. These individuals have definitely chosen the road less traveled If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. For those of us on the sidelines, all we can do is support them however we can, to help them achieve success. Whatever path you're on with regards to the world of work, bottom line Success doesn't discriminate. It's equally available to everyone, regardless of age or sex. You have only to cultivate and practice the hard won lessons learned by those before you and always be looking for opportunities to improve. If you're serious about achieving success in your workplace, as an employer, an employee or as someone who is self employed, do a little research and discover the resource specifically created to help you understand the work world and how it works, from all sides.

Home Loan Modification Help – Avoiding Rejection rejection.

By Lara Sawyer

Making an application and ultimately qualifying for a loan modification is just about as serious and involved as the original mortgage you took out on your home. In fact, it may be a little more serious, because you are looking for terms to cut you some slack on your monthly budget. On top of that your current terms are just fine with the lender the way things are. So you have some serious foot work in front of you. Many homeowners get rejected the first time around. Some hapless borrowers get rejected a second and even a third time. Ways do exist to avoid this

Rejections A home loan modification is more or less another request for a loan. And, before your can borrow money, the lender will test your ability to pay the amount necessary on a regular basis. Once again you will have your finances scrutinized, including your job status, your monthly household income, your monthly expenses, and other matters will be investigated. If the lender determines that it is feasible you can make the payments, the loan modification is yours. If you do not qualify after the investigation, do not feel bad. Put yourself in the place of the lender, it is strictly and purely business. If has nothing to do with whether or not you are a nice family who goes to church every Sunday. So, before you even thrust yourself into this position, know your limitations, have a very good idea of what you can really afford to pay every month. Consider your life situation. What are the needs of your family? Can you really afford a loan? Remember that you are borrowing money with interest and you are not paying back just what you borrowed. It grows. Do not even attempt to fudge your financial situation even just a little bit. Lenders have ways of determining your real situation. Also, remember the mention of a home loan modification being strictly business? Even if you are indeed borrowing money to make improvements on your home to add value, it does not matter. At the point in time when you are asking for the loan, there is no added value to the lender. Next Step It is usually good to attempt your first loan modification yourself.

Foreclose Defense to the Rescue By Antoinette Ayana

The housing market bubble that burst in the fall of 2008 and the subsequent financial crisis that followed have in many ways defined the lives of millions of Americans for the past few years. Banks made decisions, bad loans, and left homeowners in nowin positions with enormous debt that they couldn't possible pay off. Then of, course, when the homeowners predictably could not pay off their loan, the banks moved back in and took the house back for themselves—i.e., the ones responsible for the crisis in the first place exacerbated the crisis by trying to save their own necks. It was neither fair nor ethical, and perhaps even unjust. If you are a homeowner and a victim of a bank trying to take your property away from you, it's not a bad idea to consider looking into foreclosure defense options. You might be able to save your house. Most homeowners who cannot pay off their monthly mortgages were put into this position not by their own mistake but by their lender's failure in judgment and unprofessional practices. But many homeowners still understandably feel helpless in stopping these banks from intruding on their property and taking it away from them—after all, the banks are the ones with all the money. David and Goliath stories are great and all, but they don't always come to fruition; sometimes the underdog needs help if he is going to stand up against the bigger opponent. That's where inquiring

Many loan modification agencies or attorneys can charge rather large sums of money to walk you through the process. But, as you can see, it is not much of a surprise that many homeowners seeking loan modification are turned down. If you have already faced rejection, it might behoove you to hire a professional firm that specializes in home loan modifications. These firms do have exacting standards to ensure the professional competence and reputation of their business. As with the lenders themselves, you need to divulge everything of relevance in a forthright manner. The more you are up front with them, the better they will be able to get you through the process. Another thing to consider when seeking a home loan modification is to work to lower your interest rates. If you can get a home loan modification program and get your interest rates loweredArticle Submission, it stands to reason you will be saving yourself money and anxiety every month.

about a foreclosure defense expert enters the narrative. Many of these banks get away with taking away a homeowner's property simply because the homeowner doesn't know what to do. He or she probably doesn't know all the nooks and crannies of the law and therefore can't properly stand up against the bank. However, by hiring a professional and someone who knows these laws inside and out, the victimized homeowner suddenly has a real shot of fighting back against the sanguinary bank's questionable practices. The first initiative a foreclosure defense lawyer will take is—predictably—to investigate the legality of the bank's incursion. Oftentimes we might forget it because they seem so far off and untouchable, but banks are guilty of malpractice and illegal activity on occasion. Your hired lawyer's job is to determine whether or not the lender is vulnerable because of an error somewhere in their claim to rightfully repossessing your property. Sometimes it happens that, in fact, there is a case to be made that the bank has no legal right to repossess your house. If that's the case, it's time to stick up for yourself and your property and take the lender to court. In a time like this, when the economy is still limpid and slow to recover, and when banks continue to take heavy action against their borrowersFeature Articles, foreclosure defense options are well worth investigating and pursuing in order to stick up for the property that you so cherish.

Working with an Estate Planning Attorney By Antoinette Ayana

What can an estate planning attorney do for you? These professionals are very familiar with the process of organizing and creating a plan that will play out at the time of a person's death. This plan can be very helpful in accomplishing many of your goals. It can also help you to make sure that your wishes are not lost in the courts and that your desires are not misunderstood by your family. Due to the complex nature of things like wills and probate court, it is often best to work with an experienced lawyer who knows this particular field well. The laws in your state may be different than other states. Therefore, you need a local professional who can guide you through the process. What They Can Do The services you need from an estate planning attorney may be very basic or they may be very expansive. The goal is to sit down with these lawyers and to discuss your situation. You will likely be able to state what your goals are and what you would like to do to make them happen. It is important that you speak to a lawyer in advance of making decisions because state laws may limit some of the actions you can take. From that point, you may want to discuss some of the following options available to you through these lawyers. • Minimize your taxes. One of the ways these lawyers can help you is to minimize the amount of taxes your property has to pay out at the time of your death. If you do not set up some option for this, your heirs may be forced to sell some of your property to pay off the taxes. • Ensure your wishes are carried out. These lawyers can also help to set up trusts and other vehicles to help ensure that your property moves from your ownership to that of the person you desire it to be with through a trust. This can help to keep that property out of probate court. • You can ensure your family has the financial means to manage your death and any medical bills or needs you may have. Your attorneys can help you to make plans to protect your property through the use of life insurance policies. You can use these professionals to draft a will. Use them to help you to transfer money into college funds for your children or grandchildren. Let them help you to make plans for your dependents in case you suffer an untimely demise. These are just some of the services an estate planning attorney can offer to you.

Can Singing Improve Your Health Extend your life? by Jeff McCarty aka Jeff-The-Great

Okay admit it - you step into the shower, you hold your fake microphone near your mouth, you close your eyes, and you let go with some of the best singing you've ever done in your life. You embody the complete talents of Luther, Aretha, Celine, Whitney... At this moment no one can tell you that your voice is not made for the big stage. You are a singer. Well... at least until the shower goes off. Whether you know it or not you have just engaged in one of the healthiest things you can do for mind, body, and spirit. You just enjoyed one of the greatest health benefits of music without need for any training or practice or having someone teach you anything. Although a well trained great voice rarely comes out of the shower, anyone can develop a voice that is ready beyond the shower. For most of us singing solos in front of a large crowd is simply a glamorous fantasy. But we can all explore our talents, and abilities at a church, a community choir, or just sing in the night away with friends on karaoke night... and if you're wondering, yes, singing really is healthy for your mind and body. Singing can do wonders. Repeated studies show stress levels are reduced greatly when we are able to express our emotions through artistic endeavors. Singing gives us the ability to take our natural artistic tool and canvas anywhere anytime. At a moments notice this tool, we are all born with, can cut stress levels in half. If the job is giving you the blues, that boss is annoying you, that neighbor is pestering you, the traffic is a killer, everything seems to be overwhelming... go to a tool that you were born with and relieve a little stress. Just Sing your way through it. All it takes is one session, a few moments, just a minute and you will feel a lot better. When you sing you use your diaphragm in concert with your abdominal muscles. This is believed to produce an aerobic exercise that is beneficial to your circulation, and your lungs. Singing has the power to coordinate muscles so much so it has

been used to benefit stroke victims. You do not need any musical accompaniment to have this benefit you can do it with Just your wonderful voice. Many people have been relieved of many physical, psychological, emotional illnesses and traumas through singing therapy. If you are ever nervous people often say take a deep breath, well, that is the same technique you use for singing. This technique, used to produce better quality sound, also aids in calming you down, therefore reducing your stress levels. As music therapy develops and grows it is becoming more and more common to have seasoned citizens (senior citizens) participate in community groups where there is some type of choral singing. This style of music can be tailored to any group. From the popular to the obscure the connection is what's important. Many members of these community organizations talk about the therapeutic benefit and a feeling of refreshment after a good sing along. This type of collaboration and grouping is getting more and more popular. One of the more popular displays of mature citizens singing together is the British rock group”The Zimmers.” The oldest member was born in 1 906. You can go to Wikipedia and read all about them. Music therapy, as it develops and as it grows, is discovering that many seniors who have lost many of their mental capabilities have fully intact abilities to recollect and enjoy the music of their past. There are numerous studies that suggest regular singing improves breathing, mental health, and life expectancy. So listen up my friends, both young and old, singing will bring joy to your life and quite possibly add years as well. By Betty Odak Losing weight is a struggle for many people in this country including children. The question is – “What do we do when we can’t lose the weight?” There are a number of metabolic processes contributing to this. We live in a microwave society where everything is instant or we want them to be. Diets are treacherous incarnation as a temporary and highly restrictive program of eating in order to lose weight. This can be dangerous and not a safe way to lose weight permanently. Therefore, the first step to permanent healthy weight loss is not by diet and quick fix pills. Instead, think about a healthy eating plan that you could live with and enjoy for life. A lifelong program of everyday healthy, pleasurable eating coupled with regular exercise is the key to success. To lose weight, eat less and exercise more. How tiresome! How matterof fact! Yet how true. Eat small portions of food at a time. Eat every 23 hours; sleep 68 hours a night. Exercise 3050 minutes 46 times a week. Have a healthy social support network. Do meditation and prayer. Setting goals are gratifying. They produce interest and passion in life. They make life interesting and, sometimes, exciting. When we learn to surrender our desires, we gain energy, enthusiasm, mental vigor, and even better health. Energy rises, multiplies,

when we set a desired goal and resolve to work toward that goal. Many people, millions of them, can find new energy by selecting a goal and giving all they have to accomplish that goal. Goals cure dullness. Goal even cures many chronic sicknesses. There is magic in setting goals and writing down those goals. It sets into motions a powerful psychological, spiritual, and emotional strength. We become aware of and do the things we need to do to achieve and accomplish. Things come to us. Things begin to happen, and life feels like normal again. What are your goals? What do we want to happen in your life, this week, this month, this year, for the next five or ten years? What problems do you want to solve? What materials things would you like to possess? What changes do we want to make in your life? What would you love to do for a career? What do you want to accomplish? How much weight do you want to lose? Change is something that many of us are not comfortable with. Losing weight is a change that has to come from inside to be successful. The change that is

effective and long lasting is a modified behavior. Life is full of questions and few answers. How much weight do you want to loss? How long will you live if I lose the excess weight? What negative habit(s) and behavior(s) do you want to change? What line of career do you want to retire? What kind of spouse do you want as lifetime partner? All the questions above could be an incentive and reasons why we want to lose weight. On my next article, I will write on the impact of psychological effects on weight loss. I will also write on why some people lose weight easily, while others do not. Check my website for more information. http://www.weightlossandculture.com

The event took place during the pregame ceremonies at the annual Jackie Robinson Day celebration. He is a Vietnam Veteran and was mobilized in 2004 for a year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He retired in 2008 as a Chief Warrant Officer Four. During his military career, he was selected as Outstanding Warrant Officer of the Year by the United States Army Warrant Officers Association and the Reserve Officers Association. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Army Commendation Medal (tree oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Good Conduct Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and numerous other awards. Chiles is a long time admirer of Jackie Robinson and has an extensive collection of Jackie Robinson memorabilia and has exhibited his collection at the Pomona Library, the El Monte Library, the La Habra Library, and at the Jackie Robinson Stadium in West Los Angeles, the home of the UCLA Bruins baseball team. He currently has pieces from his collection displayed at the African American Museum of Beginnings in Pomona. Jackie Robinson broke into the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 becoming the first African

American to play in the major leagues in the modern era. Each year on April 15th, all major league players wear number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. “I am excited and honored by this selection. With the recent purchase of the Dodgers by Magic Johnson and his group of investors, I am thrilled to be a part of a new beginning of the Dodgers.” Chiles said. Farrell Chiles currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation and as its Vice President for Resource Development.

About The M Vickers Foundation

The M Vickers Foundation was conceived after a mother’s 30 yearold daughter, her youngest child, was shot at point blank range with a .357 magnum in the back by her boyfriend. This bullet pierced the daughter’s left lung and her right lung collapsed shortly thereafter. She remained in the surgical intensive care unit at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California for four months. The mother, Patricia Vickers, had to fight with all of her might to ensure that her daughter, Miriam Vickers, received the medical care if her daughter’s life was to be sustained. Doctors told this mother that her daughter would not survive. To add insult to injury, the insurance company was not cooperative or empathetic. The concern of the HMO was not about saving lives, it was

about saving cash. The total medical bills exceeded 1.5 million dollars. Miriam Vickers survived, and Patricia Vickers birthed the M Vickers Foundation into existence. The M Vickers Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization, was founded to care for all victims of domestic violence without regards to insurance or money and help them to return to a normal, productive, independent lifestyle. The foundation plans to open its first safe house for women and children on July 1, 2013 and a 250 bed transitional treatment facility and break ground on July 1, 2016. The Foundation currently provides food, clothing, personal hygiene products, and referrals to needy children, women, and men in Los Angeles, Compton, Watts, Palmdale,

Lancaster, and North Long Beach, San Bernardino, Highland, Fontana, California. The Foundation visits schools and provides incentives to encourage children to strive for academic excellence. For the past three years, the Foundation has distributed toys to thousands of disadvantaged children – “Gift of Giving.” Our efforts are facilitated by partnerships with Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, World Vision, Walmart, Stater Bros, Panera Bread, U.S. Vets and teachers and faculty from various school districts. We strive daily to serve as many needy children and families as possible with love and respect. Our goal is to empower, enrich, enhance and love families dealing with domestic violence with an emphasis on women and

Etiquette Excursion With Mona

By Mona Johnson

How many meetings do you have to attend in a week? Now, how many of those meetings are worth your time? Good etiquette extends to meeting also. Whether you are a member of the group or the leader of the group good etiquette is important to advance a productive meeting agenda. Why do you gladly attend some meetings and painfully declare you will not ever again attend others? What and who makes a meeting successful? Meetings that are allowed to trail off into private conversations become a waste of time for everyone. Private conversations should be halted immediately with dignity and respect. Ask honestly and gently, “do you have something positive to add to this topic” or “do you have something to share.” If they respond and the response is not pertinent to the conversation then politely state, “I am going to move on with the agenda.” But be reminded every now and then the private conversation offers a good idea. Use it, but make sure it keeps with the agenda. If the private conversation is ahead of the agenda schedule tell them it is a great idea and you would appreciate them introducing it when you get

to that portion of the agenda. Meetings that are dominated by one or two people will drive newcomers away and will cause productive, hard working members to question if they will continue to attend the meetings. If this is happening then you may have to start calling on members by name. You may use a statement such as, “Joan we have heard from you so I am going to hear what Joe has to say.” Above all be polite and try to engage the private talkers and the dominators of the meeting by getting them more involved in the present meeting agenda topic. Any meeting no matter how small should have an agenda. Why would you meet if you do not have topics or issues to resolve? An agenda can be as simple as a list of items being jotted down by the executive committee or the person conducting the meeting. If it is jotted down it should be shared in full so everyone knows what is to come. Some agenda can be very formal, presented ahead of time, listing topics and identifying who will present them at the meeting. Before the meeting ends the person in charge of the meeting or the secretary should summarize plans and

children. We invite everyone to come out to our “Mix N Mingle for Charity” funds will be to purchase the 1st safe house for victims of Domestic Violence.
