LEGACY MASTERPLAN FRAMEWORK AECOM W/ ALLIES & MORISSON, KCAP, LONDON, 2007-2010

The ultimate purpose of the Legacy Masterplan Framework (LMF) is to provide a framework that will guide the long-term development of the London 2012 Olympic site, while allowing for an appropriate degree of flexibility in relation to the detailed form, scale and amount of development in each specific part of the site. A close knit team of town and socioeconomic planners, landscape architects, urban designers, ecologists, infrastructure, utility and transport engineers, and property consultants were brought together to prepare the groundwork for the framework masterplan. Over a period of six months, the design and planning teams analyzed the spatial and socio-economic context of the Olympic Park region. The vision for the park was developed on the basis of this analysis and the objective of shaping a sustainable, inclusive future for east London. In order to test the opportunities and limitations that flow from different densities, distribution of open spaces, allocation of facilities, types of housing, division of uses, and circulation, three FAR bandwidths were tested. City references were used as typologies of each respective FAR and density and plugged into the different development sites around the park. Each model was then tested against certain criteria and its positive and negative characteristics were enumerated and discussed. This process allowed for initial area testing, yielding unit numbers and an overall understanding of the capacity potential of the site. Each area was then analyzed individually to assess the appropriate density and block typology according to its context and inherit character.

PRIME PRODUCE TROUPE OPERATIONS + SLAB ARCHITECTURE, NEW YORK, USA, 6,000 SQF., SCHEMATIC DESIGN - CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION, 2012-2015

Prime Produce is a cooperatively-run guild for social good that provides altruistic organizations with a multi-use space for co-working and events. Located in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, two existing buildings were combined in order to provide a public-facing cafe, event space, meditation room, collaboratory workspace, basement art studio, and small rooftop farm. The design strategy is divided into three elements: bones, organs and brains. Bones: the existing building infrastructure and character is retained and repaired; incisions are made in the party wall to enable larger gatherings. Organs: hybrid furniture pieces create moments of collaboration and interaction by balancing both collective/individual desires for workspaces and allowing both structured and spontaneous interactions to occur. The Organs achieve this by invoking historical examples of communal workspaces, by playfully translating these examples into spatial machines that create varied possibilities for collaborative, communal work. Brain: Installation of new electronic systems to increase efficiency and interoperability.

HUE HOTEL CAZA ARCHITECTS, BORACAY, PHILIPPINES, DESIGN DEVELOPMENT - CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION, 2014

The project aimed to rethink the concept of a boutique hotel and tropical architecture for the 21st century. Embracing the lush climate, but drawing attention inward, the bulbous design comprises a stack of interlocking rings producing a continual, rhythmic cycle of entertainment and relaxation through terraces, roof gardens, and hotel amenities. The experience moves from communal, recreational spaces in the central enclosure to a collection of bespoke guest rooms along the upper reaches of the building.

MALAFRONTE HOUSE RANGR STUDIO, GALLATIN, NY, 11,500 SQF. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT - CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION, 2015-2017

The Malafronte House, Guest House and Barn are located in Gallatin, New York. Designed for a young family and their guests, the three buildings are each strategically located across a large site of tumbling hills lined with wooded forests and a river to the southeast. The main house is organized along an east-west axis, maximizing the view of the landscape as well as providing for cross-ventilation and maximum daylight. The main house was conceived of as two interlocking horizontal volumes, one housing the main programs for the daily use of the family, and the second housing additional guest programs.

The Guest house is nestled into the hill at the southeast corner of the site. A long concrete retaining wall forms the spine of the guest house, with bedrooms, a powder room and the main living space all accessed from it. The exterior porch wraps the living space and overlooks the river below.

GRIZZLY PEAK RANGR STUDIO, BERKELEY, CA CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION, 2017

Located in the steep Berkeley Hills, the Grizzly Peak house was designed as a house and architecture studio for a young family. A white stucco volume perforated with a composition of punched windows negotiates the steep terrain. The open living room, dining room and kitchen float atop this solid volume like a transparent periscope providing a magical view of the San Francisco Bay below.

Facebook currently occupies the upper levels of an eight-story office building in Seattle, Washington. The project required the relocation of the main reception from the sixth floor down to the first floor in order to provide a better connection with Facebook Westlake as well as the public lobby and retail areas on the ground floor. In addition to the new secure reception area, the ground floor was re-designed to provide a secure multi-use event space, training rooms and necessary support spaces. The intervention aims to use a minimal material palette, floor graphics, color, and wall art in order to direct the flow of visitors and employees, create a comfortable, welcoming space, and to adhere to the global corporation’s strict design guidelines. Three plywood anchors containing the reception desk, lounge area and small kitchen, create a clear navigation system within the space.
