From The Pastor

JESUS, STAY WITH US

The season of Lent calls us to a time of preparation and cleansing, a time of training our minds and hearts in the ways of God: You, Lord Jesus, knew great power, to heal, to transform, to proclaim the reign of God. So you met great temptations. The wrong way, glittering and possible, was open; you could rule if you chose, in majesty and wonder, more victorious than Alexander, more imperial than Caesar. But you said, No, simply, decisively, for ever, for us. We pray for the Church, tempted like its Head. When the Church seeks political power, Jesus, stay with us. When the Church longs to become wealthy, Jesus, speak to us. When the Church strives to impress with splendour, Jesus, give us simplicity. When the Church wanders from the way of sacrifice, Jesus, hold us. When the Church listens to the call for cheap grace, Jesus, keep us always in your way.

Holy Spirit of God, enable us to respond to temptation with the strength of your Word within us, so that we may hold firm to our calling and take your better way in faithfulness. Bernard Thorogood (The Complete Book of Christian Prayer, Continuum) May God work within us to help us keep a holy Lent, that we may come to rely upon God’s presence in our lives more fully. Mark

March is Lakeside’s Regular Skyline month, so remember to bring

non-perishable food items, especially, meat and peanut butter, crackers, dry milk, etc. And money is always a big plus for needed items. We will continue our collections until the last Sunday in March. Thanks!

The Share Sunday School Class will be starting new Sunday

School material in March. We have a Birthday Breakfast every other month to celebrate each member’s special day. This is a class that loves one another, and is supportive with each other and the Lakeside congregation, as well as those outside our fellowship. We ask special prayers for several of our members: Sylvia Frank, Rebecca Hemme, John McGaugh, and Mary Ellen Cromwell. These members are fighting some ongoing health problems, and prayers are always welcomed and appreciated. We are all very thankful for the opportunity to share each other’s lives every Sunday morning. God brings us growth and strength, with lots of caring arms to hold us up. If you are not in a Sunday School Class, join one. It will bless you AND Lakeside! May God Bless You, The Share Class Thanks, Derek Smith, for contributing these cute pictures.

Blanket Valentines were a big success this year, as we sold (after expenses) $510.00. This is 102 blankets sent to those in need right here and across the world. Maybe we can “Blanket the World with Love” just a little corner at a time. Thank You, Your Missions Committee and Church World Service

Poverty

The poor, on the other hand, are under no such delusion. When Jesus says, “Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest: (Matthew 11:28), the poor stand a better chance than most of knowing what he’s talking about and knowing that he’s talking to them. In desperation they may even be willing to consider the possibility of accepting his offer. This is perhaps why Jesus on several occasions called them peculiarly blessed. –Frederick Buechner, Beyond Words FINANCIAL UPDATE

Having done so well to end 2012 (!!), we are off to a good start in 2013. We are largely “on track” with our pledged giving, though our total pledges for the year are below what is needed to support our total budget. Keep it up, Lakeside!

Don’t Forget March 30th

If you have any questions, please contact Bob Alexander (Finance), Curtis Cromwell (Trustees), or Pastor Mark.

APPORTIONMENTS! If you haven’t had a chance to check out the 2013 apportionment board, take the time. The board was beautifully executed by Megan DeCastro and Sherry Miller and features raindrops as the individual apportionments. This year it has gone up earlier than usual to give more time to make our choices. Look it over and decide where you want to contribute!

Making Disciples

As many of you know, we have also had several unexpected challenges: a break in the hot water line in the parsonage, a break in the gas line at the church, and the vandalism and destruction of the air conditioning units of our Education Building. Insurance will help with some of the cost, but we are left with $5,000 in expenses we had not planned on. If it is possible for some of you to make a special contribution (in addition to your pledge!) toward this necessary work, it would be greatly appreciated!

Meeting Needs

In a sense we are all hungry and in need, but most of us don’t recognize it. With plenty to eat in the deep freeze, with a roof over our heads and a car in the garage, we assume that the empty feeling inside must be just a case of the blues that can be cured by a Florida vacation, a new TV, an extra drink before supper.

The Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation is pleased to partner with the Oklahoma City Thunder to present the Oklahoma City Thunder Nothing But Nets Night on March 15, 2013.

• $36 seats in sections 305, 306, 311, 320 • $46 seats in sections 310, 324, 325 To purchase tickets or for more information, contact Travis Bruno at 405-609-3105 or tbruno@okumf.org. For more information about Nothing But Nets, visit www.nothingbutnets.org.

Making a Difference

When tickets for the March 15th OKC Thunder vs. Orlando Magic game are purchased through the Foundation, a portion of the ticket price goes back to Nothing But Nets, an organization founded in part by The United Methodist Church. Through ticket sales and other contributions, Oklahoma United Methodists raised more than $30,000 since 2011. With the money raised, Nothing But Nets provided over 3,000 life saving bed-nets for children and families in malaria-stricken third-world countries.
