THE

LAKESIDER June 2012 FROM THE PASTOR When the Storms of Life Are Raging I write this on Wednesday, the morning after Tuesday night’s sudden violent thunderstorm. The tree outside my church office stands lopsided, having lost a good portion of its western canopy. Several skylights and windows are (again!) damaged and will need to be replaced; our “rent houses” suffered as well. Fortunately, several church Trustees and dedicated members were quick to respond and tend our bruised buildings. Some storms are sudden and unpredictable; others are not. This is also the day of Debbie Hamlin’s funeral service. Cancer, the “storm” that eventually claimed Debbie’s life, had stalked her for years, and had made its cruel outcome obvious months earlier. While she was a blessing in the days she lived, Debbie was not blessed with an abundance of days. Whether of long or short duration, storms of one kind or another are certain. Our faith and trust are that God is sufficient to either and to all conditions. Whether we are caught off guard by the sudden appearance of tumult or must withstand a storm’s long, unrelenting barrage, God is our sure refuge. Or, as we sing #2216 in The Faith we Sing:

When we are called to sing your praise with hearts so filled with pain that we would rather sit and weep or stand up to complain, remind us, God, you understand the burdens that we bear; you, too, have walked the shadowed way and know our deep despair. When we are called to sing your praise and life ahead looks grim, still give us faith and hope enough to break forth in a hymn, a thankful hymn, great God of love, that you are everywhere; you walk the shadowed way with us and keep us in your care. Mark

Lakeside Online The church website - lakesideumcokc. ning.com - is always looking for photos of church activities and church members. If you have any that you would like to share, please email them to John Richardson (john.t.richardson.07@gmail.com). Did you know the church has a Facebook page? Well, we do! Go to www.facebook. com/lakesideumcokc and “Like” our page. We will be posting lots of new and fun things on our page. - John Richardson

Have You Noticed The Tree? Outside the church office hangs a large tree (nicely painted by Nick Geist) that bears leaves indicating our various Apportionments. There’s a wide variety of leaf amounts (from as low as $21 to as much as $1,200). You are asked to select one or more leaves, write your name on the remaining duplicate leaf, and write down whether you will pay all or part of the amount for that leaf. (Please share that information with the church office.)

PROJECT TRANSFORMATION

Most of you are aware that Apportionments are our way as United Methodists to share in ministry together – accomplishing far more together than we could separately. We join with United Methodists in Oklahoma and around the world in supporting nursing homes, camps, college scholarships, assistance to the poor, resources for the homeless, ministerial education, and much more. Some of the leaves also represent less “inspiring” needs as group insurance, pensions, and administration, but these are also part of what makes everything else we do possible.

Project Transformation is a summer literacy camp for under-served children in urban areas of Oklahoma. The camp provides children one-on-one time with mentors and leadership in reading, computers, arts and crafts, music and theater, field trips and enrichment activities. The program is sponsored by the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference, AmeriCorps, and community individuals and organizations. Project Transformation now serves over 500 children in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Bartlesville with the help of 55 AmeriCorps members, 1,000+ volunteers, and more than 50 partner churches. Our church is scheduled to work at Chapel Hill UMC July 9 – 12. This is a camp program for the entire summer with all kinds of activities, and a daily reading program. We will need 12 people a day to work 2 1/2 hours. We would love for you to participate all four days, but you can be there whatever days you can. We will also be providing a meal for the volunteer camp workers one night during our week. A signup sheet will be provided in June.

Please respond graciously as we help to “green” the Tree and support our vital apportionment ministries! - Mark

SUMMER MUSIC SCHEDULE

Summer is just around the corner, which means our music rehearsal schedule will be changing. Bell Choir will stop rehearsals after our last Offertory on Sunday, June 3rd. The Chancel Choir’s last rehearsal before summer break will be Wednesday, June 6th. Choir members will still participate in Sunday service. All musicians will resume rehearsals in late August and we will have a kick-off party for the fall! We are always looking for new ringers and singers – please consider your talents this summer while we are on break and think about joining us this fall! Our pianist, Corie Melaugh, will be serving as an apprentice vocal coach this summer for the Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina. Corie will be leaving us the months of June and July for this exciting opportunity, but will be back with us in August. We wish her the best! We are always looking for musicians in our congregation to present Offertory at service. Instrumentalists, pianists, singers – if you are interested in sharing your talents as part of service, please contact me at jasonegrife@gmail.com to discuss this opportunity. - Jason Grife

We appreciate all the Sunday School Classes for providing GREETERS AND USHERS everySunday. The following is the next two months schedule:

June - Joy Class July - Disciple Class

JOY CLASS

Happy June everyone! They say June is for lovers. Let us be lovers of Christ! We’ve missed Dean and Wayne Johnson. They’ve had a series of accidents and health problems. Let’s all pray for their quick recovery. Also for Betty Puckett, who is in rehab at Epworth Villa and Ruby Jensen, who has shingles. We have a couple of events coming up this month. June 10th will be our class birthday breakfast at 8:45 am and June 31st our Ladies luncheon @ 11:30 am at Charleston’s. Any friends or any women of the church are invited, but please let Donna Andrews know as we make reservations. It’s lots of fun! That’s all for now. Have a wonderful summer. Remember, God loves you!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 10th through 14th this summer.

Sunday, July 1, 2012, following the morning service we will have a Baked Goods Auction to raise money for apportionments. There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the foyer of the church for those people who would like to donate baked goods. All baked goods are needed including cookies, brownies, cupcakes, cakes, pies, breads, and anything else that you would like to make. If you have any questions, please call Kristi Smith @ 596-1917.

Your Lay Delegate reporting the latest………… First of all, thank you for allowing me to represent Lakeside UMC at Annual Conference. It is an honor. 2012 Oklahoma Annual Conference at Boston Avenue UMC, Tulsa was held May 27-30. The theme of this year’s conference was “Celebrate the Plan”. Over 500 churches in our state were well represented by a Pastor and a Lay Delegate. Many reports were heard covering the life and happenings of our United Methodist Churches in Oklahoma. To read from the Board of Laity report; “Celebrate the Plan”----The Board of Laity celebrates our many local churches that have effective Strategic Plans and ministries, which leads to more vital congregations! Spirit-filled laity living and leading in ministry are an important part of the plan for sharing God’s love in local churches, communities, the Oklahoma Conference, and the world. Two questions I would like to present to you our church members…Are we, Lakeside UMC, celebrating the plan? Are you as a member of Lakeside UMC doing your part to“Celebrate the Plan”? Again, it was my honor to represent Lakeside, it makes me proud and I’m very blessed to be in the Lakeside United Methodist Church family. - Barbara Smith
