JAGAT THE JUNGLE KID

Zhè shì yī gè míng jiào jiǎ jiā tè de xiǎo nán hái de gù shì,

tā dú zì shēng huó zài cóng lín shēn chù.

This is the story of a little boy named Jagat who lived by himself, deep in the jungle.

Jiǎ jiā tè dà bù fèn shí jiān dōu duǒ zài xiǎo wū li,

zhǐ yǒu chū qù zhǎo shí wù shí cái huì chū lái.

nNǐ kàn, tā bù gǎn mào xiǎn chūqù,

rèn wéi wài miàn de shì jiè chōng mǎn wéi xiǎn:

lǎo hǔ kěnéng huì xíjí tā, léi shēng kě néng huì xí lái,

shéi zhī dào ne, yē zǐ kě néng huì zá zài tā tóu shàng.

Jagat spent most of his days hiding in his hut and would only come out to look for food. You see, he was afraid to venture out and saw the outside world as a place full of danger: a tiger could attack him, thunder might strike, and who knows, a coconut could fall on his head.

yī tiān wǎn shàng, yī chǎng bào fēng yǔ dǎ pò le cóng lín de jì jìng.

Shù yè yáo huàng, shù zhī zhī zhī zuò xiǎng, fēng nù hǒu zhe.

Jīng kǒng wàn fēn de jiǎ jiā tè duǒ jìnle xiǎo wū.

One night, a heavy storm broke the silence of the jungle. The leaves shook, the branches creaked, and the wind howled in anger. Terrified, Jagat took refuge in his hut.

Dì èr tiān, yī qiè yòu huī fù píng jìng,

jiǎ jiā tè xiǎo xīnyìyì de zǒu chū xiǎowū qù mì shí.

Lìng tā jīng yà de shì, ⼀

yī zhǐ dòng wù jiù tǎng zài tā jiā mén qián.

Nà shì yī zhǐ sōng shǔ!

The next day, when all was quiet again, Jagat carefully stepped out of his hut to get food. To his surprise, an animal was lying right in front of his home. It was a squirrel!

jiǎ jiā tè zhīdào tā bìxū zuò yīxiē shìqíng.

Tā gǔ qǐ yǒng qì zǒu jìn zhè zhǐ xiǎo dòng wù.

Tā xiǎo xīn yì yì de bǎ sōng shǔ bào qǐ lái, dài jìn le wū li.

jiē xià lái de jǐ tiān fēi cháng mánglù:

tā jiǎn qǐ shù zhī hé cǎo lái d ājiàn yī gè shū shì de wō, 取⽔,寻找最新鲜的⽔果 …… qǔshuǐ, xún zhǎo zuì xīn xiān de shuǐguǒ……

jiǎ jiā tè dì yī cì yǒule péng yǒu, kàn dào xiǎo sōng shǔ kāng fù, 他⼼⾥充满了喜悦。

tā xīnlǐ chōng mǎn le xǐ yuè.

Jagat knew that he had to do something. He mustered up all his courage and approached the little animal. Carefully, he lifted the squirrel and brought it inside.

The next few days were very busy: he picked up branches and grass to build a comfortable nest, fetched water, and looked for the most delicate fruits.

For the first time, Jagat had a friend and his heart filled with joy as he saw the little squirrel recovering.

zhídào yǒu yī tiān, sōng shǔ tú rán zhàn qǐlái, tiào chū xiǎowū.

jiǎ jiā tè tiào le qǐ lái, dà hǎn:“nǐ zài zuò shén me? bié zǒu!”

sōng shǔ zhuǎn guò shēn kàn zhe jiǎ jiā tè de yǎn jīng,

kāi shǐ wǎng shàng pá, bìng fā chū zhī zī shēng.

Until one day, without warning, the squirrel got up and started hopping out of the hut. Jagat sprang to his feet and cried out, “What are you doing?

Do not leave!” The squirrel turned around to look into Jagat’s eyes and squeaked as it started climbing.

“我该怎么办?”

“wǒ gāi zěnme bàn?”

jiǎ jiā tè yǐ qián cóng wèi pá guò shù,

dàn tā gǎn shòu dàole cóng wèi yǒu guò de gǎn jué: yǒng qì.

rú guǒ tā de péng yǒu chū le shén me shì zěn me bàn?

jiǎ jiā tè chōn gguò guàn mù cóng zhuī gǎn sōng shǔ.

tā shēn xī yī kǒuqì, kāi shǐ wǎng shàng pá.

suī rán hěn xīn kǔ, dàn tā jiān chí le xià lái.

suí zhe tā pá dé yuè lái yuè gāo, jiǎ jiā tè kāi shǐ gǎn dào gèng jiā zì xìn.

“What should I do?”

Jagat had never climbed a tree before, but he felt something he had never felt before: courage.

What if something bad happened to his friend? Jagat rushed through the bushes in pursuit of the squirrel. He took a deep breath and began to climb. It was hard work but he kept going. And as he climbed higher and higher, Jagat began to feel more confident.

Sōng shǔ pá shàng shù, kāi shǐ zài shù zhī jiān tiào yuè,

dàn jīng cháng huí tóu kàn kàn jiǎ jiā tè shìfǒu hái zài hòu miàn.

bìng bǎ tā dài huí ān quán de jiā zhōng.

dāng tā men liǎ pá shàng qù shí,

jiǎ jiā tè kāi shǐ kàn dào guāng xiàn tòu guò shù cóng zhào shè jìn lái……

The squirrel moved up the tree, started jumping from branch to branch, but regularly turned around to see if Jagat was still behind. The little boy wanted to hug his furry friend and bring it back to the safety of his home.

As they both made their way up, Jagat started to see rays of light shining through the trees...

tā huāle jǐ fēn zhōng cái zhōng yú kàn qīng le yǎn qián de jǐng sè.

Once at the top, the bright sunshine blinded Jagat, and it took his eyes a few minutes to finally take in the view.

But he could not waste another minute as he saw the squirrel hopping from tree to tree, as if showing him the way to a new world…

PRIMARY SECONDARY

The Sugar Glider

Although wupih sirsik is a small animal (about the size of a palm), they can glide an extraordinarily long distance, up to half the length of a football field!

Amazing Eyes

As a nocturnal animal, the sugar glider can see well in the dark using its large black eyes.

Comfy Pouch

Female sugar gliders can have 1 or 2 babies at a time and keep them in a pouch on their belly for several months (like kangaroos!).

Tropical forests in Indonesia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Where do they live?

What do they eat?

Nectar, fruits, pollen, tree sap, insects. 10 - 12 years.

How long do they live?

Wings and tail

Sugar gliders’ 'wings' consist of thin skin that stretches from their hands to their ankles. While gliding in the air, these animals use their bushy tail to balance and guide themselves.

Gliding from tree to tree

Sugar gliders live in trees and rarely come down to the ground. They use their wings to glide from from tree to tree.

Male sugar gliders

Males sugar gliders are different from most other male animals; they are one of the few mammals that participate in caring for their babies.

WHAT’S YOUR JOB?

Why did you choose that job?

@Prayitno.g

What is a conservationist Prayitno?

A conservationist is someone who works to protect and manage the natural environment including animals and their homes.

Even though I was born in the big city of Jakarta, I grew up spending hours observing hairy caterpillars, jumping spiders, and colorful beetles in my garden.

With time, I also began to notice human’s impacts on nature: air pollution, garbage pileups, and plastic in rivers... The one thing that really stuck with me were the caged birds at the pet markets, they looked scared and miserable.

I decided to give these birds and other animals a voice and protect their homes.

Oh, is this why you are using this strange machine?

Yes, nowadays, I work in Riau province on the island of Sumatra. This camera trap is able to take photos and videos of animals undetected.

I use that to study animals in their natural habitat. By understanding where they live, what they do, and when they are active we can better manage and conserve these animals.

What animals have you seen on the camera trap?

There are over 500 species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles found in the forests of Riau. Camera traps have recorded many elusive species such as the flat headed cat, the sunda clouded leopard, the malayan sunbear, and Storm’s stork, just to name a few.

What is your favorite animal found in your restoration site?

My favorite animal is a small, shy, and fluffy ground-dwelling bird called the Black Partridge. Very little is known about them, and the more information we collect, the more we can do to protect them.

Iconic animals such as the Sumatran Tiger get a lot of attention but every animal, big or tiny, plays an essential role in the health of these forests.
