Airless systems with pistons offer at least 2,500 PSI and often as much as 3,000 PSI, which is one of their main advantages.Having high PSI supplied by a mechanical piston shunting paint through the spray gun creates powerful suction, enabling the use of long hoses connecting the paint gun to a large material supply such as a 5 gallon can of paint. Even a small painter that squeezes the piston, filters, and other mechanical parts into the handheld case can pull paint through a ¼" hose from 25 feet away. Larger varieties can suck paint from as far away as 150 feet, letting you move all the way around a mediumsized building without needing to move your material supply.

Become Familiar with Sprayer Parts and Operation. Become familiar with how your garden sprayer or chemical sprayer operates. Most have a carrying handle on top that doubles as the pump. The handle on top screws off and on and lifts out so a mixture can be poured into the tank. When lifting the handle out you will see the long cylinder piston that pumps pressure into the tank. After the spray mixture is added, replace the handle and screw it on tight. To add air pressure, push the handle down and turn slightly. This releases the piston rod so you can begin pumping air pressure into the tank. Do not over pump with air pressure; you can always add more pressure later. When you are finished adding pressure, push the handle down and turn slightly in the opposite direction to secure the handle.
