From stagecoach holdups to the hunt for notorious outlaw Black Bart, Madera County has a rich history of the gold rush, the logging industry, and the struggle to become its own county. Madera, which means “wood” in Spanish, shifted from a thriving timber market to a bountiful agriculture industry. It is now a key gateway to Yosemite National Park hosting tourist and locals alike in quaint towns and cities that evolved from a lively past. 2018 marks the 125th anniversary of Madera County. Come join us in an eventful year of celebration!

“The road winds tightly through a deep lush pine forest in the Sierra Nevada. You make a turn, the trees part and your sense of proportion is suddenly overwhelmed. Things simply cannot be as massive as they appear. You grip the wheel tightly and try to focus on the road but the scenery astounds your mind.  Realism has just given way to fantasy.  You slow to a crawl trying to take it all in.  The sheer size, distance and rugged beauty of what lies before you seems completely impossible! This is Yosemite!”

Trail Restoration in the Mariposa Grove  • NPS by Al Golub

Mariposa Grove

… is expected to re-open spring of 2018

HISTORY: Located at the southernmost point of Yosemite

Near the south gate on Hwy 41, 30 minutes from Oakhurst on Hwy 41

National Park, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is the largest of three ancient groves within Yosemite. The grove contains approximately 500 mature Giant Sequoia trees. Being among the rarest, oldest and largest living organisms in the world, Giant Sequoias are truly an iconic species. Early visitors were so inspired by the big trees that in 1864, in the midst of the Civil War, Congress passed landmark legislation to permanently preserve both the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley.

RESTORATION: The restoration of Mariposa Grove aims to

preserve these majestic trees by balancing visitor needs with ecological protection. Park ecologists, wildlife managers and others are working together to mitigate future impact to the trees, restore the grove's ecosystem, protect wildlife and create an exceptional experience for park visitors. The project will restore Giant Sequoia and associated wetland habitat and restore natural hydrology. NEW MARIPOSA GROVE INFORMATION CENTER  • NPS by Al Golub

Glacier Point • Steve Montalto

Yosemite in a Day

We highly recommend spending more time in the park, but … If you are limited to only one day, here is our list of must-see highlights

You’ll need to get an early to start to if you want to pack all these great sites into one day.

DAY 1 (Yosemite Valley) STOP 1

Glacier Point (Open Seasonally)

Make your way up to Glacier Point via Glacier Point Road. At 3,000 feet above the valley floor, this grand vista offers a bird’s-eye view of Yosemite Valley, many of the valley’s waterfalls and massive granite peaks of Yosemite’s high country. STOP 2

Tunnel View

View of Bridalveil Fall, Half Dome, Clouds Rest and El Capitan. View Bridalveil Fall from Tunnel View, then head towards Yosemite Valley. You will see a sign for Bridalveil Fall on your right. Enjoy an easy ¼ mile walk to the base of the waterfall (be prepared to get a little wet in the springtime). STOP 3

Yosemite Chapel

The Yosemite Chapel is the oldest building still in use in Yosemite Valley. Dating back to 1879, the chapel offers both a history lesson and a spectacular view of Yosemite Falls from its steps. It’s also a fantastic location to capture fall photos.

4

2018 Visitors Guide - Visit Yosemite | Madera County

STOP 4

Sentinel Bridge

Continue on the road and follow the signs to turn left over Sentinel Bridge. You can park at Shuttle Stop 11. After taking in views of Yosemite Falls across Cooks Meadow, walk back to the middle of the bridge for the perfect selfie spot featuring a view of Half Dome over the Merced River. STOP 5

Yosemite Valley

Valley Loop Trail & Yosemite Falls Follow the signs for the Day Use parking area. If it is time for lunch, step into the deli for a tasty sandwich. We suggest taking it to-go and making the short walk to Lower Yosemite Falls. There, you can enjoy your lunch while you gaze at the magnificent 2,425 foot waterfall. From the lower fall, head out on the Valley Loop Trail and meander your way through the valley enjoying views of Half Dome, El Capitan and Yosemite Falls from different angles. In addition, enjoy lush meadows, wildflowers and a possible deer or coyote sighting. Looking for an easy way to get around the Valley, hop on the free Yosemite Valley Shuttle. (See Map) STOP 6

Half Dome Village

Work your way back to Half Dome Village to enjoy a tasty fresh-baked pizza on the Pizza Deck. If you’re in the mood for something a bit fancier, hop back on the Yosemite Valley Shuttle and head over to the The Majestic Yosemite Hotel for dinner. If you have a little extra time, stop in at the Ansel Adams Gallery, Indian Museum and the Valley Visitor Center before you depart. yosemitethisyear.com | ysvb@yosemitethisyear.com

If you are lucky enough to spend a few more days, here’s what we suggest...

DAY 2 (Highway 41) STOP 1

Mariposa Grove

Stand among some of the world’s oldest and largest trees in Mariposa Grove. Mariposa Grove, with its newly completed multi-year restoration, is home to several hundred mature Giant Sequoias and is the largest grove in Yosemite. STOP 2

Wawona

Located 5 minutes inside the south gate to Yosemite, step back in time in the historic town of Wawona. Explore the historical sites such as the Pioneer Yosemite History Center, the Big Trees Lodge and the Wawona Covered Bridge. STOP 3

DAY 3 (Highway 120 East) STOP 1

Tuolumne Grove

Park at the Grove Trailhead and take a short 1¼ mile hike along Old Big Oak Flat Road through a shaded forest to get to the grove. Here you can find around two dozen mature Giant Sequoias.  Plan for 1½ to 2 hours to get to the grove and back to the parking lot.   STOP 2

Olmstead Point

Enjoy amazing views that showcase how glaciers shaped this part of Yosemite as you look down Tenaya Canyon toward Yosemite Valley. Clouds Rest and a unique view of Half Dome are key features toward the south with Tenaya Lake viewed toward the north east.

STOP 3

The views around this alpine lake are stunning and it’s a popular location to enjoy a picnic, do some kayaking, swimming or fishing or just lay back and enjoy the sunshine. STOP 4

Take a less-traveled hike to enjoy some of the lower cascades of Chilnualna Falls or plan for a day of hiking and complete the entire hike. (8.4 mile /13.5 kilometer round trip). Lembert Dome • Steve Montalto

Tuolumne Meadows

Just 6½ miles from Tenaya Lake is one of the largest high-elevation meadows in the Sierra Nevada. Stop by the Visitor Center, take a short hike to the Parson Memorial Lodge or just enjoy the views of the meadow, the Tuolumne River and the many unique geologic features of the area like Lembert Dome, and Unicorn & Cathedral Peaks.

BONUS STOP

Chilnualna Falls

Tenaya Lake

Whoa Nellie Deli

Continue the scenic drive along Highway 120 eastward out through Tioga Pass and continue down to the town of Lee Vining. The drive down the slope of the eastern escarpment of the Sierra is breathtaking in its own right. Stop at the Tioga Gas Mart just before HWY 395 and enjoy some of the world famous fish tacos or lobster taquitos at the Whoa Nellie Deli. Yum!

Family Things To Do

You’ve explored the park, but what other activities will the kids love?

Madera County offers an array of activities for families with kids of all ages. Enjoy a few of our favorites highlighted here. YOSEMITE MOUNTAIN SUGAR PINE RAILROAD Hop aboard a historic steam train and take a ride into the past through the pines of the High Sierra to Lewis Creek. From 1899 to 1931 the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company operated miles of narrow-gauge railroad track, during which over one billion board feet of lumber were harvested from the surrounding forests. While there, see the very tools used by loggers more than 100 years ago, pan for gold and explore historic treasures of the railroad's

As you enter, you’ll be greeted by a life-sized skeleton of a Columbian Mammoth. Larger than the more well-known Woolly Mammoth, these beasts could stand as high as 14 feet tall. maderamammoths.org

2018 Visitors Guide - Visit Yosemite | Madera County

yosemitethisyear.com | ysvb@yosemitethisyear.com

Hiking - Bass Lake/Oakhurst/Yosemite Home to southern Yosemite and the Sierra National Forest, Madera County offers a wide array of hiking options. Explore hiking trails from easy familyfriendly walks such as Nelder Grove’s Shadow of the Giants or a walk along the creeks on Lewis Creek Trail or Willow Creek Trail, or challenge yourself with a strenuous hike to the top of Chilnualna Falls inside Yosemite National Park.

Lewis Creek - Oakhurst

Willow Creek - Bass Lake

Featuring two waterfalls, the Lewis Creek Trail winds along forested paths and next to the creek in the Sierra National Forest. Its convenient location between the town of Oakhurst and just a handful of miles south of the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park, makes for a great hike to explore before you head into Yosemite.

At a little under 3 miles (5km), this trail will take you along the creek that feeds Bass Lake and past several stunning cascades and swirling water holes. You’ll enjoy a forested trail that opens up to scenic views of the stream and other natural scenes as you hike. Note: Be sure to watch your footing as rocks can be extremely slippery. Stay on the trail.

Chilnualna Falls - Wawona, Yosemite The Chilnualna Falls Trail features a series of beautiful cascades and pools and you won't see as many people as on the famous Mist Trail. Make it a full day and hike the entire 4 miles (1.6 km) one way to Chilnualna Falls, or enjoy a short trek to some of the stunning cascades towards the beginning of the trail and spend the rest of your day exploring more of Wawona.
