What is a social business?

A social business is a business whose mission is to address a social or environmental need in a financially sustainable way. Its costs are covered by the revenues it generates. Investors in a social business recover their investment amount, but any additional surplus is reinvested in this or another social business. Yunus Social Business

• Advisory & consulting: to corporations, governments, development agencies and NGOs

• Based in Germany, with offices in Haiti and now Albania, and projects in many other countries

• Social Business Funds: financing & incubation of social business entrepreneurs and projects

• A social business itself, majority-owned and chaired by Prof. Yunus, and part of the “Grameen” network of organizations

• Implementation services: national movements, business plan competitions, awareness campaigns

• A young, energetic team with backgrounds in management consulting, entrepreneurship and international development

• Skill building & training: giving organizations and governments the tools to promote social business

• The goal is to identify and finance entrepreneurs and ideas with high potential to become successful social businesses • Investments are typically in the form of soft loans and/or equity • The capital repaid by the SBs is reinvested in additional social businesses • Investors get their investment amount back – but no more – after 10 years
