66

Each year we connect with thousands of Christian leaders, ministry staff, teachers and volunteers, just like you, who share our passion for sharing the story of Jesus with children, youth and families in their schools, churches, and local community. We take seriously the need to provide clear, sound and relevant resources to equip people for this worthy task. This year we have transformed our standard catalogue with some added extras—so we are excited to share with you the first edition of the CEP Ministry Essentials Catalogue. Along with information about our products, you will find articles and extra goodies. We  would love for this to be a resource to which you return throughout the year as you plan, prepare and deliver your ministry programs. As you embark upon another year of following Christ, we are also keen to support you in your personal faith, so encourage you to look into our range of commentaries, Bible studies and devotional tools, like the REAP journals. CEP considers it a humbling privilege to partner with you in your serving the kingdom, and pray that God go before you, preparing, strengthening and leading people to himself for his glory.

How do you use the Connect curriculum? Connect clearly sets out the teachings of the Christian faith in a way that guides the students into an understanding of God, Jesus and the Bible, so they can make informed choices about their own faith. One of its strengths is that as the students mature, the curriculum matures with them, digging deeper as they go through their primary years. The Bible is ultimately the text we are teaching, and Connect gives us an age-appropriate framework from which to teach. As Paul says in Romans 10:17, ‘faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ’.

Do you have any encouraging stories? One little boy, who had never prayed out loud, said at the end of the lesson, ‘Can I pray today?’ I said, ‘Of course you can pray’ … and he just started praying the normal way that little kids do:

With FIONA CRAN Area Coordinator for Religious Instruction (RI) Glasshouse Country south-east QLD

By TRISH KOUTRODIMOS

What do you need to make the most of that small, but precious time available to connect with students in their SRE/RI lesson each week? Fiona Cran has had a passion for teaching the foundations of the Christian faith in schools for the last 14 years. Here she shares with CEP some of her experiences of this enriching and vital work.

What makes a successful lesson? Ensuring we have quality teachers who can meet kids where they are at is really important for a lesson to be successful. We want students to be able to take what they’ve learned and apply it to their lives, so we help teachers develop their skills in sharing the gospel and train them in things like classroom management. Kids also love fun and games, so we aim to inject those things into our lessons. We’ve found their responses to be so encouraging. They love to hear about Jesus. In fact, in my class we call RI the ‘Really Interesting’ or ‘Really Inspiring’ lessons!

‘Thank you God for today and for what we learned. Thank you for Mrs Cran. God, sometimes my life is really tough, but I know you’re there for me and I really, really want to live for you. I know that Jesus loves me and I know that he saved me and I just love you. I just want you to help me. I know that I’m going to be with you one day and I’m looking forward to that. Thanks God, Amen’. There was total silence from the class! He was simply talking to his Saviour. And the class teacher, who is not a Christian, came over to him and said, ‘That is the most beautiful prayer I’ve ever heard in my life!’

How can churches support schools ministry teachers? One of the biggest ways is through prayer. We have actually produced prayer bookmarks about our schools so each of the local churches’ members can pick one up, put it on their fridge and be reminded to pray for this important ministry and for these precious moments to really connect with children’s lives.

■ Pray that the children will remember God daily as they see his creation, and understand that he is King over all the earth.

Each of the psalms that are explored in this unit reveal something of God’s character to us. Psalm 93 teaches us that God is our King who rules in majesty. It outlines how God’s creation and his control of it show him to be a majestic King. God is our Creator, he is our ruler, and he is our King.

© CEP 2012 Hello God!

This unit explores the theme of Who is God? Who is Jesus? This first lesson introduces God as the King who created and sustains everything. Future lessons will explore how God our Creator loves and cares for us.

In this lesson, the children will review the creation story and are reminded that God continues to look after the world we live in today. You may find it helpful to review the creation narrative before this lesson (Genesis 1).

Memory verse

The BIG answer … God is King.

By the end of the lesson the children will: ■ know that God made the world ■ understand that God is King and ruler of his creation ■ begin to appreciate that they can love and trust God as their King.

When we relate to him we need to remember our position under his rule. Furthermore God is still active in the world today—he has not left it to function by itself. The Bible makes clear the fact that God continues to rule over and care for our world (Psalm 104; Matthew 5:45; 6:25–30; 10:29, 30). God is active in creation every day.

JASON MOSS

Assistant Minister Airds Anglican Church

Almost every SRE teacher has a story: a battle of wills or a student rebellion to make William Wallace proud. Classroom management can be one of the most difficult and intimidating jobs for any SRE teacher. Jason Moss teaches in several schools across Campbelltown in Sydney’s south-west, and is no stranger to challenging classroom behaviour. He shares some of his tips for smooth SRE lessons.

Tell us about your teaching approach When you teach God’s word, you have to be very engaging—the way you communicate has often got to be interactive and quite visual. We’ll usually go 5—10 minute segments at a time: an introduction, an activity, a video clip, look at God’s word, discuss and apply it.

Can you share your tips for classroom management? It’s important to have a sequential discipline plan before you go in. First of all, non-verbal communication: you might walk over to the student and stand next to them or tap their desk. Secondly, it will be a verbal communication—affirming what your expectations are in the classroom. And thirdly, if bad behaviour continues, repeat your expectations and explain the consequences if those expectations aren’t met. It’s important that the consequences are consistent with the discipline policies of the school. And then follow through!

What helps you to keep your cool? I find that when you respect the students, they’ll have the same respect for you. If things go bad, just keep a firm, moderate voice; if you have to yell and scream, then you’ve lost them. The more you get worked up, the more it escalates the problem.

What motivated you to get involved in schools ministry? Students spend their teenage years working out who they are and why they’re here and their purpose in life, so there is a huge opportunity to be a positive voice in their lives. And as the hub of the community, schools are also a great place to connect with families. I just see it as a great place to make a difference.

Do you have any encouraging stories? There’s a student whose father committed suicide a number of years ago, and as a result of SRE we’ve been able to walk through that journey with him. He and his family have connected to our local youth group, and as a result, they’ve had some older guys get alongside them who’ve really helped them through that process and, in some ways, filled the void of the father.

How does the CEP curriculum help you in your classes? We use CEP’s year 7—10 curriculum, which provides a really helpful framework and foundation to my lessons. We add media clips and activities to supplement them but they are very clear and helpful in communicating the Christian faith to teenagers. The CEP material is excellent in raising the professionalism of schools ministry in our schools.

If you need assistance with a difficult class, please speak with your local SRE Coordinator for further tips and training courses in your area. 2016 Ministry Essentials Catalogue  High school

Munns

See the Big Picture

By Lauren Russell

When you’re baking a cake you don’t start with the icing. Likewise, it’s important to think about how the club fits into your church’s outreach strategy before you plan the costume you’ll wear on day one.

For anyone involved in children’s ministry, the thought of creating a kids’ holiday club from scratch is like building an Ikea bookshelf without the instruction manual. You’ll spend hours hunting for clever ideas, drafting Bible studies, creating workbooks, designing posters and PowerPoints, and writing lengthy to-do lists; all this on top of weekly kids’ church preparation, social catch-ups, meetings and more. Unfortunately, there aren’t any textbooks on ‘How to Run the World’s Best Kids’ Club’. However, the following ‘recipe’ offers practical tips and personal experience from St George North Anglican Church Children’s Minister, Sarah Munns, to help you plan a fantastic holiday club in three simple steps.

Ingredients An enthusiastic children’s minister or head leader

The kids’ holiday club in July is one of the biggest evangelistic events in St George North’s yearly calendar. The majority of kids who attend come from local primary schools, with over 50 per cent from a non-church background. With such great opportunities to share the gospel, churches should be actively involved in the local community both before and after the club.

A team of capable and gospel-driven leaders One kids’ holiday club program One free week (or day) in your school holidays

After running a Knights of the King holiday club in 2013, two new families started coming to St George North and more kids came to the church’s after school program. Sarah reflects, ‘We have quite a big presence in our two local primary STEP schools, lots of people know us and know our church … and when we go into the [school] grounds they say, ‘Oh, you’re that lady from that kids’ holiday club with the knight!’ So I think it’s really exciting and presents a lot of opportunities, small Next on the to-do list are the smaller but no less and big, to see God’s kingdom grow’. significant jobs; the five Ws. Who, what, when, where and why. The timing and location of your holiday club combined with STEP the quantity (and capability) of your leaders will influence the program or material you’re likely to use, and whether you’ll need to tailor it to suit your needs.

Remember the five Ws

3

Get your  whole church involved

The final step, aside from advertising the club in your local area, is to build the excitement and anticipation among your own church congregation. Get everyone involved by asking people to serve or to commit to pray for the club. This will help leaders to feel like it’s not just up to them, but they’re a part of a much greater and more holistic outreach effort. Speaking from experience, Sarah says, ‘We’ve been thinking a lot more about how families are the ones who are really doing the evangelism and reaching out to their kids’ friends and their kids’ friends’ families. A couple of our church families have really used kids’ holiday clubs to get to know the parents of their kids’ friends by having them over for lunch, and things like that’. So including church parents in your planning and implementation is a great way to connect with non-church families.

2

Sarah says, ‘We were a church who had been running clubs for eight years when we used Knights of the King and it was excellent. So it works either way. It’s excellent if you’re starting off but also if you’ve got a great team and know how to run a kids holiday program’.

Music Gospel-centred music kids will love

How I teach

my kids THROUGH t SONGS u Ben Pakula explains why he started singing the gospel to his boys, as soon as they were born. I am a proud father of two boys. As far as I can work out, the Bible doesn’t directly command me to evangelise my boys. Instead, it tells me to bring them up in the ‘training and instruction of the Lord’ (Ephesians 6:4). In other words, I am to teach my kids as Christians—in much the same way as a pastor teaches his church.

My lullaby to my children Both my sons came out of their mother’s womb through C-section, which meant that I got to hold each of them for the first couple of hours, whilst my wife recovered. It was then that I began my job of teaching my kids in a Christian way. For me, the most intuitive way to do that was by singing to them. I had written a lullaby for the occasion, which I sang to them over and over. It went like this:

Make Christ Jesus number one In everything you do Seek God’s kingdom first And all your needs will be given to you Don’t worry about the food you eat Or all the clothes you wear Just trust in Jesus Christ And God will keep you in his care

52

This song expresses my greatest desire for my children, and in many ways it’s appropriate that music is the medium through which I express this desire.

Songs are ideal for teaching God’s word to kids Music is a great tool for letting the word of God dwell richly among Christians. In the New Testament, corporate singing fits into the ‘teaching’ context. Christian music may be more than teaching, but it is certainly not less. What it teaches is the word of God. And when the word of God is taught and proclaimed, God is glorified. At one and the same time then, the song that teaches truth is also the song that praises God. When my eldest son sings the above lullaby to his younger brother (in a rather cute attempt to settle him down at night), I think he is praising God. Insofar as my sons obey the teaching in the song to ‘make Christ Jesus number one’, (which is basically a theological paraphrase of Matthew 6:33), they will be bringing honour to God in their lives as well.

Singing about Jesus Broadly speaking, the word of God is a story—a story that should affect our lives in certain ways. The story is ultimately about Jesus. When I teach my boys that story, and when I teach them about the way it should affect their lives, I should be making either implicit, if not explicit reference to Jesus.

2016 Ministry Essentials Catalogue  Music

Colin Buchanan’s song, ‘Don’t Bop ‘em on the Head’, is one of my favourites. It doesn’t mention Jesus by name at all, but it so clearly applies some of his teaching to our lives in a way that honours his lordship. Conversely, Colin’s song ‘Real Hope’ is very much about the story of Jesus’ life and death, with only implicit application to our lives (although Colin sings about how it affects him personally). This too, I think, is a brilliant song. The teaching in both these songs will help my boys to ‘make Christ Jesus number one’. If there are kids' songs that neither expound something of the big story of Jesus (as found in the Bible), nor give teaching that is clearly consonant with his person and work, then I tend to avoid them. This doesn’t mean I don’t let my kids listen to secular music (they get heaps of it!), but secular music doesn’t claim to be edifying for Christians.

Sing to your kids whenever you can If there was one other thing I could say to parents about Christian music for kids, it is this: SING TO THEM! The songs my sons know best aren’t the ones they’ve heard the most, but the ones my wife and I have sung to them.

Masterplan is a biblical-theology concept album. It's a musical presentation of the whole story of the Bible, focusing on the centrality of Jesus. Kids, teens, and anyone who isn't too old to rock will no doubt enjoy the immersing music and theology Masterplan has to offer.

If you want kids to be introduced to more ‘meaty’ biblical concepts, but they’re at the stage where they’re ‘too cool’ for kids’ music, then this is an album they’ll love. Ben Pakula fuses biblical theology with 'wacky hard rock', showing kids how the whole Bible is about Jesus Christ. Perfect for kids aged 8 to 14 who like it LOUD!

A diverse collection of easy-tolearn kids’ songs. Great for Sunday schools, scripture classes or for singing along in the car. We Will Follow Him also contains three instrumental tracks without lyrics as an extra resource.

Games d purpose Just like parables or illustrations, creative youth group games can teach us important gospel truths. When explaining the gospel of Jesus Christ to adults and young people alike, it helps to take the big ideas (such as grace, salvation, predestination, atonement, etc) and present them using illustrations. Jesus himself did this in parables saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like …’ and then using an illustration that people understood.

s

LEAH DYASON

No doubt your preacher includes illustrations in their talks at church. Jesus used them. I use them all the time too. Why? Because they help give meaning to an otherwise abstract concept.

Games as illustrations Did you realise that youth group games can be just like illustrations—the only difference is that they involve participation. If we choose to be purposeful about the games we play and the way they are explained, they can act just like illustrations, helping us understand gospel truths. The majority of youth groups will integrate games into some aspect of their gathering. Games have multiple purposes: • They help people ‘let loose’. • Games provide social interaction. • They satisfy that competitive streak residing in most of us. • Games fill in time. Most of us enjoy playing games, whatever age we are. I do. And while games are fun we want to make sure we make the most of the opportunities God blesses us with. Do we really want to waste time at youth group playing meaningless games, instead of talking about the gospel?

Games with purpose Why not start including games that teach people about God and the work of Christ? Is that not the whole reason we run youth group in the first place? Every aspect of the gathering should reflect this reason. Remember games are illustrations that involve participation, and illustrations help bring concrete understanding to an abstract concept. For instance, I was in charge of developing a night time game at camp and it came at the end of a day when we talked to the kids about sin. I wanted to illustrate to them we all have a sinful nature and we can’t escape from sin. We played a game very similar to Capture the Flag, but the kids could go to a ‘Cheat Room’ to win a ‘cheat’, which would give them a very big advantage in the game. But I had mentioned subtly at the very beginning that you must obey the rules and that if someone was cheating, their team would be disqualified. What happened during the game? At least one person from each team cheated and so nobody won! During the debrief, we talked about which team thought they won and why. A few switched-on kids had been telling their teammates not to cheat because they would lose. In the discussion I was able to show the kids how sin affects everyone and how you can’t take back a sin once it’s out there. This Don’t waste your game illustrated the youth group gatherings all-encompassing with meaningless games. effect of sin and brought it home for Make sure they have a purpose. those kids. It turned They can be a powerful tool to an abstract concept communicate the awesome into a concrete truths about God and our understanding.

Saviour Jesus Christ.

They remind me of what it’s like to be a child

1

When I think of my childhood, I remember it feeling like magic. It was natural to believe that imaginary things were real back then. Reading a picture book gives me that feeling again for a few minutes.

3

I love the way the words and pictures work together to tell the story

They are short. That suits me. There’s always time to read at least one to a child before bed. I can always squeeze one into a busy day, and then we’ve done something special together. The offer of a book makes a great reward— ‘When the blocks are packed away, we could read a book.’ Picture books are also portable. It’s easy to take some to the doctor’s waiting room or on long car trips.

8

I love using picture books to help develop children’s social and emotional skills. When a child is sick or upset, a book is a great way to help them calm down. The right book can help a child through new stages of development, new experiences, difficult situations, or help overcome a fear. Children develop empathy by seeing the world from somebody else’s point of view in a book. When we’re reading a book together, it’s easy to stop and chat about why a character did something or what you might do in that situation.

70

I love about picture books

The words are like poetry

7

They are made with love

9

Children expand their vocabulary through hearing new words in context. They learn to enjoy words and have fun with them. The educational value goes far beyond learning colours, numbers and the alphabet; there are also brilliant science and information books. Picture books stimulate imagination and creativity, which are important cognitive skills. Learning to read is essential and this begins with loving books.

2016 Ministry Essentials Catalogue  Family Ministry

They work with all ages

Children and adults can both enjoy picture books at different levels of understanding; at other times reactions across different age groups may be similar. Books with strong themes can be great discussion starters with children of all ages on such diverse topics as bravery, relating to God, and how we view refugees. Discussing a picture book is a great way to pass on values and attitudes.

I love going to book launches and hearing the story behind the story and seeing all the love and hard work that has been poured into the book. It’s well worth handing over my $25 for a beautiful hardcover copy and asking the book creators to sign it for me. I also love going to the library and borrowing as many as I can carry for FREEEEE! Or to the school fair and buying three for a dollar.

They can help children grow in cognitive and language skills

4

The best picture books are ones which adults enjoy reading aloud over and over. Some are written so beautifully, they bring a tear to the eye every time. And there are those which have me laughing out loud, even though it’s my 20th reading of the book.

Penny Morrison shares why as an adult, she still gets excited about a great kids’ book.

6

Picture books are easy to enjoy again and again

They can develop a child’s social and emotional skills

10

I love picture books because of the illustrations

Many books are a work of art. Some illustrations are so detailed that we find new things every time we read the story. Some provide layers of meaning, which can’t be understood from just the text. Others are simple, adorable, crazy, whimsical, creative or quirky.

things

In a true picture book, the illustrations haven’t merely been added later to hold the interest of children with short attention spans. The story can’t be understood without the pictures.

5

2

What I love most about reading picture books, is what it communicates to my child I stop everything else I am doing to read a book. It’s a shared experience—an activity that we both enjoy. The child has my full attention and we snuggle up close. When I read a book to my child, I am saying, ‘I love you’.

He writes as a faithful theologian, taking readers through the Gospels and explores their testimony to the extraordinary person of Jesus Christ. And he writes as an insightful pastor, taking the time to explore the personal implications, comforts, challenges of the story of Jesus as it unfolds.

Is the New Testament History? Paul Barnett

Paul—A Pastor’s Heart Paul Barnett

The New Testament states that at a certain time and place, God became human and lived among us. Even more, it claims that his death, resurrection and return have eternal significance for every person. Paul Barnett presents the evidence for these claims in this revised edition.

The Apostle Paul is one of the most fascinating and pivotal characters in Bible history. His writings form a crucial part of the New Testament. Paul Barnett’s insightful and sensitive consideration of Paul’s situation and character, seen in his second letter to the Corinthians, sheds precious light on this pastor as he sought to care for this ‘difficult’ church in its early and turbulent years.
