Teaching Aid L:1; Worksheet L:1
Teacher’s note: This activity gives students the opportunity to reflect on what they learned in the previous unit. As this is the first lesson of a new unit, you may choose to revise your behavioural and learning expectations with the class. You may also choose to spend some time finding out what your students did during their holidays.
CALM activity: Sorting activity 1. Divide the students into pairs or groups of four students. Have students race to put the life of Jesus pictures from Teaching Aid L:1 in the same order as they appear in Luke’s Gospel. 2. Ask students to remain in the pairs or groups and complete the sentence in the ‘Life of Jesus’ section on their worksheets.
11
3. Ask each group to share their sentence with the class. 4. Emphasise that although Jesus did and taught many things, the most significant thing that Jesus did was to bring about the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life through his death and resurrection.
INSTRUCTING
5 mins
Teacher’s note: This activity establishes the context of the section of Luke’s Gospel that students will be learning this term.
The turning point Read the following (modified) quote from Michael Paige’s blog on writing movie scripts: At the exact midpoint of your screenplay, your hero must fully commit to his goal. Up to this point, he had the option of turning back, giving up on his plan, and returning to the life he was living at the beginning of the film. This is the turning point and now your hero must burn his bridges behind him and put both feet in. From now on the hero will be taking a much bigger risk, and exposing himself to much greater jeopardy, than at any previous time in the film. As a result of passing this point of no return, your hero must now face complications and higher stakes1. 1. Ask students to think of examples of turning points in movies they have seen. 2. Read Luke 9:51. Explain to students that this is an important turning point in Luke’s Gospel. From this point on, Jesus now heads towards Jerusalem where he knows he has to die. Last term we learned from Luke’s Gospel what Jesus did up until this point, and also what happened in the final part of Luke’s Gospel. This term we will be concentrating on the rest of Luke’s Gospel.

Visual Aid L:1
Teacher’s note: The activity can be completed with the previous activity, or you might choose to do only one of the activities. You will need to set up a lamp to create the shadows—you may be able to use the light from the projector in your room if it is at an appropriate height.
Shadow puppets 1. Divide students into pairs and give each pair one of the cards from Visual Aid L:1. 2. Give each pair one minute to try to recreate the shadow. 3. Have students take it in turns to show their shadow to the class, and ask the class to guess what animal the shadow is supposed to represent. 4. Ask: ?? What can we learn from the animal by its shadow? ?? What are the limits of what we can learn from watching the shadow?
LINK STATEMENT Today we are looking at what it means to follow Jesus. As we explore the book of Luke we will see that following Jesus is like being a shadow that imitates the attitudes and actions of Jesus.
EXPLORING CONVERSING
10 mins
Worksheet L:1
Teacher’s note: This activity helps students articulate their understanding of how Christians act, and their attitudes to God and other people. This helps students to better understand the idea that Christians are like shadows of Jesus. Give students the opportunity to explain their answer by asking two students each time: ‘Why did you stand where you are standing?’ Put up signs on opposite sides of the classroom: one sign reading ‘completely agree’, the other ‘completely disagree’.
