A Kingdom Kid is joyful (and doesn’t have to worry) Acts 16:23–34

LESSON AIM ■ To help students to understand the difference between feeling happy and having real joy from knowing Jesus.

LESSON OUTCOMES Students will learn about: ■ Paul and Silas’ response to their situation in prison ■ the definition of genuine joy through Jesus. Students will learn to: ■ pray about things that are worrying, and trust God ■ see what it might look like to rejoice in all circumstances.

MEMORY VERSE It’s also true that we must love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and that we must love others as much as we love ourselves. Mark 12:33 (CEV)

» Bible background Kingdom Kids are joyful kids. We often think of joy as something akin to happiness. Happiness is a feeling and it comes and goes depending on our circumstances. But joy is a state of mind and can be consistent despite our circumstances. The Apostle Paul, who was no stranger to suffering (see 2 Corinthians 11:23–33; Acts 16:23–34; Philippians 1:12–19), wrote to the church in Philippi to encourage them—and us—to always be joyful, as he was.

Kingdom Kids are joyful no matter what their circumstances, because of what their King has done for them (Philippians 4:4). Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sin. As a result, sinners like you and me are forgiven and stand before God as righteous. No matter how we feel on any given day, or what is going on in our lives, our position before God does not change. This is why a Kingdom Kid can rejoice all the time, for joy is not based on our current circumstances, which are changeable, but on the unchangeable love of God expressed in his Son. However, we live in a broken world and sometimes our current situations make it difficult for us to focus on the cross and rejoice in it. So Paul reminds us not to worry about anything (Philippians 4:6). Jesus explains that the reason we don’t need to worry is that we are precious to God and he will give us everything we need (Matthew 6:25–34). Instead of worrying, God tells us in the Bible to do two things. Firstly, and most importantly, pray! Kingdom Kids can talk to their Father about anything. He loves us and is in control of all things. So if we are worried we should talk to him about it. Secondly, we need to focus on what is true, pure, right, holy, friendly and proper. There is no point in worrying about things we can’t control. We need to let God take care of them and think about other things. So, instead of worrying, Kingdom Kids should pray with thankfulness to their heavenly Father and then think about other things. If we do this, God promises us his peace (Philippians 4:6–8).

Way in

I want to tell you about George. George woke up and it was his birthday. He dressed in his school uniform and his parents let him choose whatever he wanted for breakfast. When he arrived at school one of his friends brought an extra chocolate to share with him. And he was also chosen in assembly to receive a special award for trying hard in class. ■ How do you think George felt? (Accept responses. Happy, excited, glad, and so on.) Now, I want to tell you another version of what happened to George. He woke up and his parents had forgotten it was his birthday. When he arrived at school he accidentally stepped in dog poop and it was on his shoe. Then he was talking in class and the teacher told him he had to miss out on play at lunchtime, and stay in the classroom and do homework instead.

■ How do you think George would have felt this time? (Accept responses. Sad, annoyed, grumpy, and so on.) There is another true story in the Bible that I’m going tell you about, and it involves Paul again. Remember that we talked about Paul last lesson. This time he was with a friend named Silas and we’re going to find out what happened to these two men and whether they felt happy or sad about it.

Paul and Silas were in a pretty terrible and scary situation. ■ What did they do when they were facing this worrying situation of being in jail even though they hadn’t done anything wrong? (Accept responses. They prayed and sang praises to God!) I think it is amazing that they did this in jail. I want you to think about a situation you might be facing now or have faced in the past. You may like to ask a couple of students to describe their difficult situation. Alternatively you could describe your own difficult situation at this point in the lesson. ■ Should we be happy, even when we feel sad, or worried, or scared? Why or why not? (Accept responses. Encourage a short discussion and take this opportunity to explain the difference between the emotion of happiness and the genuine joy we have when we follow Jesus.) It would be really hard to feel happy when facing a hard situation but we can still be joyful just like Paul and Silas were. We can be joyful by knowing that God loves us so much (remember our Memory verse and song) and that we can trust God to look after us.
