Jesus heals the official’s son

LESSON AIM ■ To help students to understand that Jesus could heal the sick because he has God’s power and is God’s Son.

LESSON OUTCOMES Students will learn about: ■ how Jesus healed the sick son of an important man ■ how Jesus was still able to heal the sick boy even though he was physically a long way from him. Students will learn to: ■ describe what Jesus did for the important man ■ state why Jesus was able to heal the boy.

MEMORY VERSE The only Son, who is truly God ... has shown us what God is like. John 1:18 (CEV)

» Bible background This is the second miracle recorded in John’s Gospel. We are informed that this sign occurred in Cana in Galilee, where Jesus had turned water into wine, thus closing off this section of the Gospel of John (4:46). Jesus had just travelled from Judea to Galilee via Samaria. The Samaritans testified that Jesus really was ‘the Saviour of the world’ (4:42) because of what they had heard. In contrast, the Galileans gathered around Jesus because of what they had seen (4:45).

John 4:46–54 Jesus knew that the Galileans had gathered because they only wanted to see miracles, so when the official presented his request, Jesus was exasperated (4:47–48). The crowd in Galilee wanted Jesus to prove himself to them. We might say they needed to ‘see it to believe it’. But the official was persistent. He was confident that Jesus could heal his son and so he asked again. In response to his second request, Jesus sent the official home with the assurance that his son would live. And the official believed him; he took Jesus at his word and went home. On his way home the official’s servants met him and he discovered that at the exact time that Jesus said his son would live, the fever left the boy. That day the crowd missed out on seeing the sign because they were more interested in impressive actions than in trusting who Jesus was. The official did not make the same mistake. Like the Samaritans, he trusted Jesus’ word and was blessed with the privilege of witnessing the sign, the result being life-giving faith for him and his whole household. This sign again proved that Jesus was the Christ whose word is powerful to heal. Jesus healed the boy in Capernaum simply by speaking, remembering that Capernaum was a whole day’s journey away from Cana. Seeing is not always believing! The very words of Jesus are sufficient for giving life. The people in Cana wanted to see more and more miracles before they believed Jesus but the official believed Jesus’ word and trusted him. Not only was the official’s son healed (escaping death) but through faith in Jesus he and his whole family inherited eternal life!

You will need

■ Enlarge (if desired) and photocopy the Visual aid on page 53 of the Clock face and hands. Cut out the two clock hands and connect them to the clock face with a split pin. If your students are more familiar with digital time, make some flashcards showing 1:00 and the school’s starting and finishing time and use these instead. ■ Use the Visual aid on page 55 of the Sketch starters to guide your sketches through the lesson. As you draw on the board, your students should copy the sketches into their Activity books. Ensure you outline your expectations very clearly, for example, ‘Pencils down and arms folded when I ask you to’ and ‘Don’t worry if you don’t finish as there will be time at the end of the lesson’. ■ Work out which places are about 30 km away from the school, and choose one to name in the lesson. ■ Enlarge and photocopy the Visual aid on page 54 of the Rhyme. ■ You may like to prepare the students’ Activity books by cutting the slit at the bottom of page 5 with a craft knife. Place a board behind the page first so that you don’t cut through any other pages. ■ Are there students in your class with a chronic sickness or with loved ones who are sick? How might they respond to this incident, which involves the possibility of healing? If a student raises this, you may wish to explain that God loves everyone, but he does not always heal everyone who asks. We don’t know why. However the Bible tells us that he always cares for the sick and the needy.

» Teacher’s prayer Praise God for his Son Jesus. Praise God for the time you can spend with the students learning about Jesus.

■ The exact time of the healing is not known, but in this lesson we have chosen to use the time of 1 pm as stated in the CEV Bible. Students of this age are beginning to learn how to tell the time, and this is why the clock is used in today’s lesson.
