WELCOME Our 20th anniversary year provides a unique opportunity to celebrate how we, and the organisations we have worked with over the last two decades, have changed the lives of millions of young people. I look back with pride on all we’ve collectively achieved in the last two decades and recognise the hard work and dedication of the industry professionals, staff and volunteers who have helped us on this journey. BARONESS SUE CAMPBELL CBE Chair, Youth Sport Trust
It is important for us to use this moment in time to look to the future and recognise the opportunities and challenges that may come along. In a rapidly changing world, schools and young people will face new and difficult challenges. However, our mission remains clear: to build a brighter future for every young person through PE and sport. The stories in this publication provide just a snapshot of how we changed the lives of young people by improving wellbeing, enhancing achievement and developing leadership. They should be an inspiration for us all.
My inspiration for creating the Youth Sport Trust was a passionate belief in the power of sport to transform young people’s lives, regardless of their age and ability. That is why we have worked tirelessly over the past 20 years to reach millions of young people, inspiring them through physical education and sport to participate, compete, volunteer, officiate and achieve their best in school and in life both in the UK and internationally.
SIR JOHN BECKWITH CBE Founder and President, Youth Sport Trust
There have been some remarkable advances over the past two decades which have improved all our lives but not all have had a positive impact on young people. These include the dramatic increase in their use of digital media, rise in consumption of convenience foods, and increasingly sedentary lifestyles. As a result, the future wellbeing of our nation is a topic of speculation and debate. The work of the Youth Sport Trust has a crucial role to play in encouraging future generations to adopt healthy, active lifestyles and helping to unlock potential. When I hear about the young people whose lives have been turned around as a result of their involvement with the Youth Sport Trust, I feel immensely proud. Our work truly does ‘make a difference’ and long may it continue for the next 20 years and beyond.
