ow in its 22nd year, the Maroondah Festival delights audiences by showcasing the best that Maroondah has to offer. The festival will be held at Town Park from 10am-5pm this Sunday. Entertainment is always a great attraction and this year is no exception. The festival is a family-friendly event and the site is dog- and alcohol-free for the safety and comfort of all. Maroondah Council would like to once again welcome Ringwood Honda as the principal sponsor. At the festival there will be something for everyone, including a fun and fitness area, Kids Kingdom, a community expo, a youth talent contest, food and market stalls, roving entertainment, workshops and a vintage car display. Diverse attractions at community showcase C

elebrating Maroondah’s rich and diverse community is a huge part of the annual festival and this is highlighted at the Denso community area. Presented by Denso Automotive Systems Australia, the Denso community area will showcase more than 130 groups and businesses. Visitors can learn more about various arts and music, hobby and special interest groups, as well as a large range of sports and social clubs. The Denso community stage will showcase the many talents of local dancers, performance groups and bands. A lap around the Maroondah Festival is sure to work up an appetite, so be sure to grab a tasty snack or treat from one of the community groups’ fund-raising sites scattered throughout the festival grounds. his year’s Maroondah Festival will be a children’s paradise with the Eastland Kids Kingdom dedicated to providing fun activities and events for children of all ages. The Kids Kingdom, themed Where The Wild Things Are, will feature a huge range of activities, rides and entertainment. And best of all, it’s all free. The children’s stage will be packed with entertainment from 10am and feature the ever popular Karaoke For Kids. Children can take the microphone and steal the show. Then there’s a visit to the snake handler and the live reptile display to learn about Charlie the crocodile, venomous snakes, stumpy tails, bearded dragons, goannas, blue tongues and pythons. The snake handler will present two live shows on the children’s stage throughout the day. An interactive play area features giant sandpits, games and craft activities provided by Maroondah Council’s children’s services department. Children’s service providers will also be

Each year more and more families enjoy a jam-packed day of free entertainment at the Maroondah Festival. Fun and fitness for all comers T

he RACV fun and fitness arena has various free come-and-try activities, including a tennis serve radar, rock climbing wall and mini golf. Eastern Recreation and Leisure Services will also be hosting activities such as cricket, basketball, soccer, fencing and boxing. The interactive workshop marquee will feature workshops to learn circus skills, freestyle football, hula hoops, calisthenics and drumming. Maroondah’s major leisure centres will be running a competition for golf chipping and basketball shooting, plus gymnastics and Zumba demonstrations. Spin bike trial opportunities will also be available. Be sure to visit the high-energy Panna football interactive area with Beat The Pro challenges during the

day. The Panna pro will also offer coaching tips and running ‘Wanna Panna’ open sessions. Nearby, the arts and culture marquee, on the Fred Geale oval, will have free canvas art workshops to test your artistic skills. The roll-up bicycle valet, sponsored by RACV Bike Assist, provides an easy, free and secure area for cyclists to park their bike at the festival. Cyclists can also have a free bike check thanks to Goldcross Cycles and the first 150 cyclists will get a free show bag. Be sure to visit the RACV site for information on the bike assist service, which is designed to meet a cyclist’s needs and provide cover for a variety of problems, such as a puncture, broken chain and/or buckled wheel.

he Pick A Part sustainability area will provide local solutions for global issues such as climate change. Environmental demonstrations on installing energy-efficient and watersaving products will be a highlight, alongside exhibits including greywater systems, solar hot water, heating and cooling, green cleaning products and services, and eco-friendly products for babies, pets and gardens. There will also be demonstrations and workshops on sustainable gardening and interactive, educational activities for adults and children alike. For the young at heart M

aroondah Festival’s youth precinct will feature a range of new — and free — attractions this year. From interactive airbrush workshops, where young people can make their own T-shirts, to a photobooth, there will be something for everyone. Maroondah Council’s youth services team will host a talent competition for those aged 12-25 — a chance for enthusiastic performers to showcase their talents. Competition singing categories include solo, acoustic and group. Keen dancers can show off their skills in hip-hop, krumping and breakdancing in the dance-drama category. Budding circus performers, beatboxers, comedians and magicians can enter a miscellaneous category. But, if young people need more to keep them entertained during the festival, there will be free activities in EV’s Lounge, a line-up of local, young talent on the Youth Stage, market stalls

Sweet sounds to serenade the crowd

Musical act: Tumbarumba will bring its interactive show to the Maroondah Festival’s main stage.

icking off at 10am, the Bankwest main stage will play host to a range of acts, including the Maroondah Secondary College Band, Croydon Citizens’ Brass Band and feature acts Soul Chic and Tumbarumba. Soul Chic is a vibrant and dynamic musical group fronted by two female vocalists. With an extensive repertoire, Soul Chic will take you on a journey through various eras: from 1950s jazz and Motown classics to the popular music of today — with a twist. Tumbarumba is a five-piece band that fuses the Brazilian rhythms of batucada, samba, reggae and baion with funk, hip hop and ragga in a dance-inducing explosion of percussion and voice. Tumbarumba has prepared an interactive set specifically for the Maroondah Festival and will distribute clapsticks, shakers, bell blocks and big bass drums for the audience to share and play along with the band.
