Frustrated Proprietor On a blustery Monday in early January, I had occasion to visit Portsea to view amongst other things, the beach sand bagging around the pier foreshore. No doubt it’s puzzling to all concerned that this small portion of beach appears to have altered in character whilst other areas nearby appear to be unaffected. However, the beach erosion was not the biggest surprise I encountered. With a crowd of hungry and thirsty holiday makers milling around the shopping precinct, I was intrigued by a sign on the closed shop front of the

cover photo Mornington Cup Feb 15th

Portsea General Store. “Closed due to severe staff shortage. Reopen Tuesday if they turn up!” Such a simple sign, but full of hidden meaning. Aside from the obvious sheer frustration of the proprietor in losing trade on one of the busiest days of the year, it raises a number of issues. Are net casual wages high enough to attract labour in a full employment economy? Does the minimum tax free threshold need to be lifted urgently? Is the welfare safety net so high that it discourages the search for casual or permanent labour? Have we lost the work ethic of our forebearers so that we are ambivalent as to whether

we turn up or not to work! Will we need to review our attitude towards an influx of “guest migrant workers” to fill the obvious need for labour in the retail services sector? With the current finely balanced political spectrum, no doubt these issues will be addressed in the forums to come with an extremely interested observer in the frustrated proprietor in Portsea. by Tony Grundy

LOCAL ARTIST WINS EUROPEAN APPROVAL Mount Martha artist Monica Brewer has recently captured European attention with her painting of an African rhino. On a recent trip to Zimbabwe, President of the International Anti Poaching Foundation Monaco chapter, Donatella Knecht de Massy spotted the painting on the office wall of Damien Mander, founder of the IAPF. The original painting had been commissioned by Damien’s family during the previous year and with a forthcoming charity auction to raise IAPF funds, it was suggested that Monica’s impressive painting would capture plenty of attention. Monica set about painting another rhino and now her African rhino is on its way to Monte Carlo. Monica Brewer was born on the Mornington Peninsula, and from the age of nineteen, she embarked on a 24 year journey travelling extensively, working as a professional crew member on super yachts and visiting remote corners of the globe. Like many, Monica’s romance with Africa began long before travelling across the continent in the late 80’s. A keen photographer, Monica’s creative soul began to surface, relishing the thrill of photographing the ‘Big Five’ on camera, engaging in an amazing photographic shoot with the millions of pink flamingos on Lake Nakuru, Kenya, and experiencing the joy of a very close encounter with the mountain gorillas of Zaire. These are adventures Monica carries forward to inspire her artwork. In 2003 she married her African born husband, returning to Australia to raise their son, with frequent visits to his home in South Africa, bordering the Cape Point Nature Reserve, continuing to inspire. She embraced the time at home with a small child for painting, and began classes at the Mornington Community Centre, later joining well known Australian Artist, Carole Foster. ‘Carole’s classes have been a great influence’ she says, ‘apart from her brilliant use of colour and natural talent, Carole has taught me to relax, enjoy and not to become too ‘precious’ about the project in hand, to become more adventurous.’

‘I have experimented with a variety of techniques in acrylic and have a rather diverse range of paintings in my collection, but find I keep reverting back to the use of a palette knife with thick layers of paint in bright vivid colours. American Artist, Leroy Neiman, is my influence when painting African animals. Together with my own travels across Africa, my photographs and encounters with these wonderful creatures, I feel inspired to paint in this style.’ Monica’s painting, along with paintings by other high profile artists such as Larry Norton, will be auctioned at a charity event in Monte Carlo on the 19th April. All proceeds will go to the International Anti Poaching Foundation to support the continuation of education and ranger training towards the protection of Africa’s wildlife. Asked how she feels about the rhino’s European connection, Monica responded, ‘I feel honoured painting for such a worthy cause, thrilled at the prospect of the auction in Monaco and extremely nervous exhibiting with the likes of well known African Artist, Larry Norton.’ Monica can be contacted at
