The Equine Rescue & Adoption Foundation, which fosters large animals for the Sheriff’s Office, is looking for a new paddock. “If this closes, and it faces closing a year from now, the horses won’t have a home,” the Sheriff said at a press conference Monday, May 13. Honor Flight movie lands in Stuart For Your Voice News & Views TREASURE COAST — The powerful documentary that set the world record for the largest film screening in history is landing in Martin County. Treasure Coast Hospice is partnering with Southeast Florida Honor Flight to present a free screening of the film, “Honor Flight, One Last Mission,” May 21 at The Mayes Center for Hope in Stuart at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. “Honor Flight, One Last Mission” is a heartwarming documentary about four World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give the vets a trip of a lifetime to view the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each vet reflects on his war stories, and recalls beautiful postwar life stories, as they embark on their own Honor Flight. The concept of the film was so moving that it united 28,442 people in Milwaukee Brewers’ Miller Park for the star-spangled premiere, setting a Guinness Book World Record for the largest at-

tendance at a film screening. The film not only honors the legacy of the WWII veterans, but also provides a much-needed perspective – challenging the audience to think deeply about what it means to live in freedom. “We are thrilled that Treasure Coast Hospice is partnering with us on this project,” Todd Tucker, vice chair of Southeast Florida Honor Flight, said. “Their staff actively supports the Honor Flight mission by volunteering to be chaperones and writing letters of appreciation for distribution on flights.” Lori Posdal, director of community relations at Treasure Coast Hospice, added, “Keeping with the spirit of the film, we will recognize all those in attendance who have served in our armed forces.” Admission is free, but space is limited. Reserve your seat at tchospice.org/flight or contact Mayce DelValle (772) 403-1758. The screening is open to all ages, and the venue is handicap accessible. said Randy Kinder, foundation president. An unidentified owner surrendered seven malnourished and possibly neglected horses, along with four donkeys, to the Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, May 4. The Sheriff’s Office turned to the foundation to foster and seek homes for the animals. It already had 11 animals. “In Martin County, we only have one horse rescue facility,” the sheriff said. Kinder said that the foundation has taken rescued horses from Miami to Ocala. Most, however, are from the local area, Martin, St. Lucie and other nearby counties. “I think Martin County and its occupants need to step up and help,” Kinder said at the press conference. Kinder said that the foundation has quietly sought a new home for its animal sanctuary for more than a year. The Sheriff’s Office found out that it needed a new home when it placed the 11 new animals there earlier this month. Holly McFall, barn manager, said that most animals the foundation fosters are adopted in about six months. A variety of things affect that. “We do have some horses that live out their days here,” she said. Sheriff’s Detective Tommy Smith, agricultural crimes unit, said the foundation is a big asset to local cops. He said when the Martin Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies have to remove large animals from owners, cops need to know where they’re going. There’s no room for uncertainty, he said. “We can’t just wing it and hope we find a place the day it happens,” he said.

By 2004, the former office manager was diagnosed as her condition worsened. The couple married in 1958. They had three children that Liz cared for. As the children got older, Liz was itching for work again. “She went back to work ‘part time,’” Beckwith said. “Sheesh. That became fulltime.” By the 1990s, the two retired and moved to Palm City in 2000. Beckwith and Liz are 80. He had a lifetime with a strong woman. “Anything that came along, she was up to the challenge,” Beckwith said Today, Liz is non-communicative. “I have no idea if she’s hot, cold, hungry, what,” Beckwith said. About 18 months ago, Beckwith started attending Alzheimer’s Community Care support meetings. There he found out that hospice could help. He called Liz’s neurologist to ask for a referral. “I called (Dr. Jason Stabley) and about an hour and a half later, hospice called,” Beckwith said. And then folks from hospice visited the couple the same day. “I thought, ‘Where do I turn next?’” Beckwith said. “When hospice got involved, they told me. In addition to hospice, Beckwith said he’s getting help caring for Liz from family friends, relatives and neighbors, help he’d likely discouraged before. TREASURE COAST — In a world plagued by pollution and trying economic times, more and more are seeking solar powered energy, an affordable alternative to electricity that also preserves the environment, representatives from Fort Pierce-based Solar Energy Systems said. The company, which has been headquartered in St. Lucie County since 1979, serves customers from Indian River to Miami-Dade counties, providing free in-home consultations for a variety of solar systems that are guaranteed to translate into big savings for homeowners. Solar Energy Systems office manager Amber Franklin estimates the company has installed around 80,000 systems in south Florida. That includes residential, commercial and industrial buildings. “Our goal is to be able to go into a homeowner’s home and see

$80 per month just from switching over from electric hot water to solar hot water, Franklin said. “It’s very simple. It’s swapping out their existing tank for a new tank and applying a collector to the roof,” Franklin said. Rebates are available through utility companies, Franklin said. Systems are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit and will pay itself off quickly, she said. “After three to four years, homeowners are producing their own hot water for free,” Franklin said of the hot water systems that come with a 10-year warranty. They also come to the rescue during the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster, Franklin said. “If you’re without power, you’re still going to be producing solar hot water for yourself,” said Franklin, who added the hot water systems do come with an electric backup. Attic fan systems help to reduce the use of expensive air conditioning units, Franklin said. The fans are applied to the roof of a house with a solar electric panel attached and will reduce the usage of an air conditioning system by upwards of 25 to 30 percent, she said.

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com The company’s solar pools systems can be adjusted to a desirable temperature and extend the use of swimming pools during typically mild Florida winters, Franklin said. “It allows you to extend your season,” she said. “A lot of consumers aren’t able to use their pools from about November to about mid-January, February.” Another system offered is the solar electric system, manufactured by Kyocera. Franklin said the goal of the solar electric is a zero dollar electric bill. Each system is custom engineered for each home and no two systems are the same, Franklin said. Some solar electric systems are purchased to offset the utility bill, depending on the grid system a roof can handle. Franklin said as more consumers learn about solar energy and how to decrease their carbon footprint, the Earth’s health will steadily improve. “That is probably the more important part of it, so that our families still have a green environment to live in down the road,” Franklin said. To learn more about Solar Energy Systems, call (772) 464-2663 or visit the company’s website at www.solarenergysystemsfl.com.

United for Families shared successes of community-based care system at annual breakfast TREASURE COAST — It may be called the community breakfast to “Stop the Tears”, but you would have been hard pressed to find a dry eye in the crowd at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on April 25. United for Families hosted its annual event, bringing together foster parents, adoptive parents and young adults who grew up in foster care to share their emotional stories with supporters of the organization’s mission. Since 2004, United for Families organization has been serving as the Treasure Coast region’s community-based care provider. United for Families has hosted the Stop the Tears Community Breakfast for the past five years to share its successes and educate the community about its services in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. This year’s breakfast featured speakers who have had first hand, positive, life-changing experiences through the services and

programs offered by United for Families. While all the presenters shared compelling personal stories, one speaker in particular — Mary Power, formerly in foster care — brought the entire room to tears during her heartbreaking account of her life struggles and how United for Families has been there to support her every step of the way. “During my time in foster care, United for Families was always there for me. Even after I aged out of the system, they were still there for me. And even today, although I have gained my independence, I know I can always turn to United for Families for guidance,” said Power. Mary is not alone in facing these obstacles. When a child turns 18, they officially age out of the state’s foster care system and are often faced with the challenge of planning for their future alone. United for Families’ Road to Success program enables young people who

During the event, guests had an opportunity to make a donation in support of the Road to Success program, helping to prepare young people for life after foster care. “Most people don’t have firsthand experience with the child welfare system. Our Stop the Tears event is an opportunity for the public to learn about our community based care directly from those who have benefited from our services,” said United for Families Community Relations director, Christina Kaiser. “We had a great turnout this year and were able to help our supporters connect better with the challenges facing children in and beyond foster care and how United for Families is changing and saving lives.” This was the first year the breakfast was hosted as a series with multiple dates and locations. Breakfasts were also held in Vero Beach and Okeechobee and were sponsored by the Treasure Coast Exchange Club and the First Methodist Men’s Group, respectively. The Port St. Lucie breakfast was sponsored by the law firm of Rosenthal, Levy, Simon and Ryles.

Marine artist and master diver brings sea to life skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com

PALM CITY — Growing up in Southern California, Randall Scott spent a lot of time in the water. An accomplished scuba diver, he earned certification as a dive master and instructor. He was also a spear fisherman. In addition to diving, Scott had another passion, for painting. The son of two artists, he has been painting most of his life. His paintings of underwater sea life

reflect his love for the ocean and its denizens. Today, the Palm City resident is recognized as one of the foremost underwater and marine artists in the United States. He was one of the artists featured in a PBS special, “Journeys of an Artist” and he was a featured artist in the traveling museum exhibit, “Art of the Dive: Portraits of the Deep.” The young painter began his career painting subjects familiar

it like an IMAX film, from seven or eight different angles. Underwater is all around you. You interact a lot closer underwater.” In 2001, Scott and his wife, Donna, moved to Palm City. Her parents were snowbirds in Stuart. “She liked the lifestyle and I liked the warm water,” he said. “I’d dived in cold water all my life. The surface water is warm, but it’s cool underwater. Southern California was getting overdeveloped and I was ready for a change.” The Scotts have four children and the painter is also a soccer and basketball coach. He takes the three older ones, ages 10, 7 and 4, snorkeling, and teaches them about their surrounding and nature. They are all learning the anatomy of many animals found in the area. “I’m very traditional,” Scott said. “I’m trying to create something I see and capture the mood. I try to portray it in a realistic way. That can be harder, because if you get it wrong, it shows. I’m a stickler for anatomy.”

to him. “I had my first magazine cover when I was 22,” he said. “It was for “California Angler” and it was a (picture of a) local game fish. I painted something I knew and it launched my career.” Scott said he imagined a life a marine biologist. “I grew up watching “Sea Hunt” and Cousteau,” he said. “I tried to steer away from the painting, but it kept grabbing.” Scott discovered the work of two marine artists, Richard Ellis and Stanley Melzoff. Seeing their work helped him decide on his path. “Wildlife wasn’t that popular,” he said. “I saw those guys and thought that I could do that.” Scott earned an associate degree in art at Palomar College in California. In 1987, he had the opportunity to meet Stanley Melzoff. They bonded over their love for art and spear fishing. Melzoff persuaded Scott to put down his spear and pick up a camera. That visit changed the direction of Scott’s career. “He liked my painting,” Scott said. “One of my main mentors as a child was now critiquing my work. It was a big inspiration. I put down my spear and started carrying a camera. You can’t do both.”

In the 1990s, Scott began diving around the world. Diving around Hawaii, he found pieces of planes from World War II “The more diving I did, the more I was exposed to the war area,’ he said. I liked the planes and started painting them.” Scott’s work was noticed by Wild Wings, a noted publisher of fine art and limited edition prints. “The president of Wild Wings flew in bombers in World War II,” Scott said. “He had an affinity for World War II.” Scott did a collection of underwater World War II-era wrecks, including a Japanese Zero, a B-25 Bomber, and a F4U Corsair. The planes are often surrounded by marine life, including sharks. The collection was successful and gave him an identity as an artist. “I became a wreck diver,” he said. “I went deeper and saw all kinds of aircraft. Through some networking, I got to go to Micronesia. I tried to capture what the light, mood and perspective of what it is if you’re underwater, not as a landscape that you’re watching. It’s as if you were there with a mask and equipment.” Scott takes photographs, but they are only sketches for him, not the finished product. “Photographs can’t capture it,” he said. “I recreate it on the canvas, using the photography as sketches. You have to fill in the conceptual vision. I have to paint
