PALM CITY — Bessey Creek will get 30 years of prosperous scrubbing with an unusual mix of natural and chemical technology, Hybrid Wetland Chemical Treatment. “We’ve got six other of these facilities in operation in South Florida,” said Rich Budell, director of office of water policy at the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Martin County Commission approved the 30-year lease of a 46-acre stormwater treatment area adjacent to Citrus Boulevard to the state. The area was constructed in 2008. The agriculture department will put about $2 million into renovations to adapt it to the hybrid-treatment technology. “It’s a technology that will take inflow water from any

PALM CITY — Kim Dodt is a sophomore at South Fork High School and is planning to enter the International Baccalaureate program. As part of her studies, the 16-year-old daughter of Hal and Shelley Dodt of Palm City began studying Spanish. It has become her passion. Dodt began supplementing what she learned in the classroom with conversations with friends, many of them native Spanish speakers she met at school. A member of the Spanish National Honor Society, she volunteers to help translate during Parent-Teacher Conferences in elementary and middle schools as part of her service obligation to that organization. “I tell them what the teacher says and ask the teacher their questions,” she said. “It helps me immensely.” Learning menu and food items has always been a part of learning a language and again, Dodt uses service to others to enhance her vocabulary. She volunteers at St. Joseph’s Carpenter Kitchen, asking people what they want to eat. “People are very helpful and happy to know someone speaks Spanish,” she

Mapp out awareness of pedestrians I

t’s a sickening feeling to see an accident coming weeks before it happens. “John, a pedestrian was hit tonight while crossing Mapp within 30 feet of where the removed crosswalk was.” I sent that text message along with a photo of emergency workers on the scene to Martin County Commissioner John Haddox at 9 p.m. on Jan. 13. He and I had previously talked about the removed crosswalk that used to in front of the Royal Palm Apartments. A few weeks back, crews were doing work on Mapp Road as part of the Veterans Memorial Bridge/ Martin Highway project. They failed to repaint crosswalk lines after paving over the previous ones. I called Haddox about it. It made no sense to have sidewalk and pedestrian signs for a mid-road crosswalk, but not crosswalk lines on the road. It looked like

Patrick McCallister Staff writer an accident in progress. Haddox agreed and talked to some right ears about getting those crosswalk lines back. He and I talked about it a second time after that. He said someone at the Florida Department of Transportation told him the lines would reappear “within a couple weeks.” The next day, the pedestrian

signs were removed, and sod put over the sidewalk. Really? When I saw this, Haddox and I had a third conversation about the removed crosswalk. He laughed, a clearly frustrated laugh. “You know, that’s government logic for you,” I recall him saying. I reiterated my point to a believer I didn’t need to convince that the crosswalk naturally directed most foot traffic from and to the apartments to one crossing point. That gave drivers repeated interactions with pedestrians there. This increased everyone’s awareness and safety. From the point on Mapp where the crosswalk was, the closest safe — and legal, from my understanding — crossing point is about 40 meters north. Heading south, the next natural and safe crossing point is Martin Highway, probably 100 meters south.

inspector gave the corps “Exceeds Standards with Merit,” the highest rating. Inspections are done every three years. Chief Master Sgt. Rod Hartsook said he and Lt. Col. Rick Mosby offer students guidance, but— “Myself and the Colonel try to stay out of their business as much as possible,” Hartsook said. “By and large, (students) do everything.” The instructors are retired from the military and are school employees. Marcell said the Junior ROTC program is at once a class, club, life-instruction program, and group of best friends. “It is a high school class that introduced students to the values of the Air Force and teaches them leadership, speaking skills and life lessons,” the 17-year-old senior said. “The students have an opportunity to apply for a staff position to help run the corps. We have many events outside the school, such as helping out at (a food-assistance program).” Additionally, the Junior ROTC has a drill team that competes against others. “We have the color guard present at events all around Martin County,” Marcell said. According to the Air Force, the Junior ROTC program traces its roots to 1911. That year, the

Army’s Lt. Edgar Steevers was teaching in Wyoming and hit on the idea of a voluntary, highschool youth corps. The idea found its way into the National Defense Act of 1916. Today every branch of the armed forces except the Coast Guard have Junior ROTC programs. Of course, there wasn’t an Air Force until 1947. Before then, it was the Army Air Corps. At first, it was the Air Service. Its Junior ROTC program stated in 1966 after the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964 expanded the youth-instruction program beyond the Army. The Air Force program started with 20 units. Today it has almost 900 with more than 100,000 cadets. Marcell said Martin High has about 140 cadets. Many have the same aim she does. “My goal is to go to the Air Force Academy,” she said. “I knew coming into high school that (Air Force Junior ROTC) would help prepare me for that.” Marcell is from an Air Force family. Her father is Col. Christopher Marcell, and stepmother is Lt. Col. Kelley Marcell. However, Marcell said some in Junior ROTC aren’t interested in military careers, but they enjoy the camaraderie. “ROTC has a way to bringing the cadets together throughout the school year,” she said.

The course is a Charles Ankrom design opened in 1981. The 18-hole golf course is famed for the effects of a prevailing easterly wind. Ankrom also designed the Crane Creek at Martin Downs. That 1972 course is major part of a multi-million dollar, ongoing renovation. It’s partially opened for practice. Folks can track renovation progress by watching the YouTube video “Crane Creek @

Martin Downs Country Club.” Weimer said the Greenwood Investment Group purchased the golf club toward the end of 2012. At the time Polo North County Club owned Martin Downs. It had fallen into some disrepair and local investors hoped to shine the gem to its full glory. “The first step after purchasing

The hybrid part is the addition of phosphorus-hungry water plants. First treated water is shunted into areas with floating plants that absorb some of the floc. Then it goes into an area with submerged plants getting even smaller pieces of floc. “You’re going to remove 75, 80 and up to 90 percent of the phosphorous from the water,” Budell said. The Citrus Boulevard facility will take 20 cubic feet of water per second, or about 12.8 million gallons a day. “We’re moving forward on construction as quickly as we can get the permits with the (South Florida Water Management District),” Budell said. The biggest goal behind all the effort is reducing further destruction to the St. Lucie River Estuary and Indian River Lagoon. The

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • PALM CITY & TESORO • JANUARY 24, 2014 • A9 Army Corps of Engineers’ large releases of nutrient-rich water from Lake Okeechobee into the C-44 Canal drowned in controversy over the summer. Pollutants in the St. Lucie River, which receives that water, had risen to the level of immediate health hazard that prompted the Martin County Health Department to post warnings against contact with the water. Tests from river samples showed that microcystis aeruginosa, a type of algae also called cyanobacteria, were releasing toxins harmful to animals and people. However, environmental experts warn that the discharges weren’t and aren’t the only sources of hazardous nutrients. For example, yard fertilizers add to the problem. Budell said the hybrid-treatment technology isn’t a cure-all. “We’ve got to address nutrients at the sources,” he said. Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said he’s proud that Martin’s first use of the hybrid-treatment technology will happen in his district. “It’s an excellent side project to see the results and down the road see if it can be done on a larger scale,” he said. “Even if it’s a small part, it’s that’s much less that’s going to be discharged into the lagoon.”

PALM CITY — Kevin Compare hits golf balls like anyone else. Except he does it from a split. Or when 12 balls are rotating on a spinner. Or by alternating left- to right-handed hits — simultaneously. Bah, easy shmeasy, right? Yeah, well, he does these remarkable hits in complete clown gear. Yep, big shoes and all. Compare’s alter ego is Divot the Clown. “I’ve done two shows with Tiger Woods,” Compare said. Maybe it was Divot that said it. Gets hard to tell who’s answering questions sometimes. “You put a red nose on, you can do anything you want.” Compare, Divot really, recently entertained children at Pinewood Elementary School, Stuart. The demonstration of his comedic, trick golfing kicked off the school’s participation in The First Tee National School Program, a golf-instruction and values-building program. Divot was at the school on Tuesday, Jan. 14. “When I heard about (First Tee), I said, ‘Wow, how can I get involved with that and promote it?’” Compare said. Compare does trick golfing shows as Divot and — well as himself. “I do Divot the Clown for kids and Kevin Compare for adults,” he said. Ready for the numbers? Compare and Divot have done 1,600 shows in 46 states and seven countries over 30 years. His fee is $3,000, plus expenses. “At one time, that’s all I did was travel with my show,” he said. Then the economy famously tanked in 2008. Compare said he’d always thought he was an entertainment thrill, but found out he was a frill. And lots of people were cutting frills. “When the economy went south, so did my shows,” Compare said. “I used to do about an average of

30 to 35 a year. Last year, I did two.” Compare is instructing at The Breakers Palm Beach. At one time, he had his eyes set on the Professional Golfers Association big times. “When we all go into this game, we think we’re going to play the tours,” he said. “I played what they call the mini-tours, sort of the minor leagues.” But, “(I) Wasn’t a very good putter. In this game you have to knock balls in holes, and the guy with the least strokes wins. I figured out pretty early on I wasn’t going to make a living playing the game.” Compare loved teaching. And in the mid-‘80s, he was involved with a program aimed at attracting children to golfing. A promotional event was coming up, so organizers decided they needed a golfing clown. “I wasn’t at the meeting, so I got elected,” Compare said. “I was already doing some trick shots to demonstrate to students what to do.” How did he become a clown? “I actually had a roommate at the time who did clowning,” Comare said. “So, I said, ‘Show me how to put the makeup on, yadda, yadda, yadda.’” Compare had a good time, took the clown gear off, and went back to the real world. Well, until someone who’d caught that show called him to do a second. Then there was something about meeting a fella named Tom Teullo, the Golfing Gorilla. The two talked. “I started putting the numbers together,” Compare said. “He did 40 shows (a year) at $5,000. He put an easy $200,000 in his pocket.” So Divot stated golfing. He inadvertently got a plug from a then up-and-coming golfer named Chris Smith. Divot was playing a tourney as a bit of comic relief, and started winning the game.

DIVOT from page A10 Smith made an off-handed remark at a press conference that stuck with him like a curse. “He said, ‘(Expletive), I got to go practice,’” Compare said. “’I just got beat by a clown.” Compare said nary a press conference could go by except Smith got the question, “Is it

true you got beat by a clown?” Compare said every time Smith got the question, his phone rang with job offers. So, when you make a living doing wearing a red nose and doing trick golf shots, where do you get your material? Fortunately for Compare golfers hit themselves into binds and have to invent trick shots on the spot. He

shamelessly steals them for his shows. Are any too hard? “I’ve tried hitting the ball laying down on my belly, and I can’t do it,” he said. Compare is married. He has two children, a young adult and middle teen. Find out more by visiting divottheclown.com.

They need a natural and safe crossing point. In fairness, the pedestrian in the collision may not have used the signed and marked crosswalk if it was still there. In fairness, the driver might have hit him in the crosswalk. I wasn’t an investigator getting all the information, so I can only guess and leave open other possibilities. Still. Can’t get out of my head the thought that those signs and stripes might have prevented a car-on-pedestrian collision. The signs haven’t come back. The sod

Mapp between Martin Downs Boulevard and Martin Highway is a horrible road for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists interacting with them. It has few safe and predictable places for pedestrians to cross. It’s supposed to be getting numerous improvements that’ll improve the road for everyone — sometime. In the meantime, drivers, please beware. She added that word is getting out about the improvements. “Right now everyone who’s coming back to us haven’t been there in a few years,” Weimer said. “Across the board, everyone remarks on how beautiful the course is.” Martin Downs has hosted watch-worthy high-caliber players. “There were many mini tours played at Martin Downs over the years,” Weimer said. “Golfers who are trying to qualify for the bigger tours start out in the mini tours.”

The Golfslinger.com Tour is one that’s paid Martin Downs a visit. Another big draw to the club lately, Weimer said, is the 25,000-square-foot Grille Room and Banquet Facility. But, a big thing that’s been attract many golfers, Weimer said, is an unusual opportunity. “We’re offering seasonal membership, corporate membership and executive membership,” Weimer said. “We have a threemonth membership. You can add months on an a la carte basis to that. The plan is very flexible.”

PALM CITY — Folks have a chance to tour the Hobe Sound Animal Protection League’s new home on Sunday, Jan. 26. “From August to December we raised enough to purchase the property,” Pauline Glover, executive director said. The league’s new five-acre home is at 6807 S.W. Wedelia Terrace, Palm City. The open house will be from 4 to 6 p.m. “There I will be begging for money,” Glover said. “We have a wish list.” The league runs a no-kill cattery with about 180 residents at the 23-acre Caring Fields Animal Rescue facility, 6452 S.W. Markel St., Palm City. Caring Fields is

also home to the Equine Rescue & Adoption Foundation, which has 13 horses there. The Pegasus Foundation owns the property. The Yarmouth Port, Mass., animal-welfare organization has let the league and foundation stay at Caring Fields without charge for several years, but now wishes to sell the property. Randy Kinder, president, told Your Voice News & Views that the foundation will have a big announcement soon related to getting property and moving. However, she said, at press time, the foundation hadn’t cinched anything. “We are definitely looking for property and money,” Kinder said.

Hibiscus, StarStruck partner to present ‘Cabaret’ FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Hibiscus Children’s Center is excited to announce the closing performance of “Cabaret,” presented by David L. Smythe, on Sunday, March 2, to directly support the services it provides to children and families across the Treasure Coast. The evening of excitement will begin at 6:30 p.m. at StarStruck Academy and Theatre, located at 2101 S. Kanner Highway in Stuart. Starring Peter Jones as the emcee, the Tony-Award Winning musical, “Cabaret,” will kick off the evening’s celebration in recognition of the great work of Hibiscus Children’s Center and its mission. All in attendance will be transported to the decadent pre-WWII world of Berlin while experiencing the hauntingly beautiful musical scores composed by John Kander and Fred Ebb. At the conclusion of the

performance, Peter Jones and the “Cabaret” Kit Kat Klub dancers will lead the way to a strolling dinner and music-filled dance studio featuring the sounds of “DJ Tony Solo” – Fullhouse Entertainment Co. “Cabaret” presenter, David L. Smythe, is a local philanthropist who is well-known for his kindness and support of our community. He shared, “I am so proud of what everyone contributes to the children of Hibiscus … how everyone works together to care for the children. When I give, I just feel so good about doing something for others. I hope that by helping people in need, I can inspire others to give also. If they do, they will have this great feeling too! What I do comes from inside my heart.”

When’s the last time you had shrimp bisque that you would have sworn was lobster? Well, the shrimp bisque at The Hunter’s Grill in Hobe Sound fooled both me and my dining companion. Not that the new chef, Mark DuPont, was trying to fool anybody. I was busily scribbling “lobster bisque” in my reporter’s notebook when the chef appeared at our table. No, he informed me, smiling widely. It’s shrimp. The creamy, cognac-laced concoction was full of tender chunks of shrimp, and plenty of them. I counted at least eight pieces in the small bowl I was partaking of. I don’t know how many I’d already eaten when my dining companion – chief photographer Mitch Kloorfain, who was busy taking pictures while I started the taste-fest – mentioned how generous the chef was with the ratio of “lobster” to the rest of the ingredients. How the chef pulled off preparing the shrimp to have the buttery taste of one of my favorite foods of all time, I don’t know. Some trade secrets you don’t ask

‘Queen of Suspense’ comes to Stuart Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART — Best-selling author Mary Higgins Clark is a story-teller. Even when she is answering questions while nursing a painfully infected tooth, she spins stories that captivate. She is known as “The Queen of Suspense” for good reason. Clark shares her stories with a Lyric Theatre audience Feb. 16, in a benefit for the House of Hope. She spoke recently from her New York office about a career that began when she was left a widow with five young children. She

would get up at 5 a.m. to write for several hours before she got the children off to school. Suspense writing came naturally to her. “I always liked scary stories,” she said. “When girls had pajama parties, I suggested turning off the lights. My first published story was a suspense story, ‘A Deadline for Paradise.’ As with so many of her works, it started with an actual event or idea. That particular story idea came from her days as a flight attendant for Pan Am on the Bermuda run. In the early days, Clark was no stranger to rejection,

“Whenever I got rejections, I just said, ‘I will show you, I will show you,’” she said. “Redbook rejected a novella, saying, ‘We found the heroine as boring as her husband.’ (Later,) when they came to me, I said, ‘Make them pay.’” Clark wrote short stories for magazines in the beginning, but they didn’t pay very well. “My husband, Warren, said he was supporting an indigent writer. The year Warren died, I made $50.” Magazines began publishing fewer short stories and Clark’s agent told her she had to write a novel. She wrote one about George Washington, but it didn’t become a best-seller until after Clark’s reputation was made. Now it is on sale at Mt. Vernon, Washington’s home. One of the hallmarks of Clarks’ writing is heroines who are resourceful and strong. “I always want strong women,” she said. “They are not looking for trouble, but something happens. In an ordinary life, something goes terribly wrong. I use that theme throughout my books, of someone doing the right thing at the right time, but something happens. “I never use violence or language. The mind is so much more a way to make people fright-

When the ordinary becomes not ordinary, that’s how you create real suspense.” One of the features of Clark’s visit to Stuart is the opportunity, funded by the Educational Foundation of Martin County, for 30 high school students to attend the lecture. They will receive a copy of one of her books and be invited to a pre-performance creative writing session with the author. Education is very important to Clark, who went to Fordham University for a college degree long after her career as established. “I gave $2 million to Fordham this year,” she said. “They wanted (to endow) a chair in literature. I said, ‘No.’ Many will say suspense writing is not literature. They established a chair in Creative Writing, to develop the talents of those who want to be professional writers. They can question whether I’m literary, but not whether I’ve got a good imagination and tell a good story. I taught that class and thought, ‘This is where I belong.’” Clark has collaborated with her

PALM CITY — On Friday, Dec. 13, lieutenants Scott and Andrea Hoover of The Salvation Army of Martin County were greeted with a mountain of children’s gifts and donations. Through the Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club’s annual Holiday Giving Night, members collected 186 toys, eight bikes, and nearly $3,000 in donations for The Salvation Army’s local Angel Tree Program. “This is the 10th year that our members have been involved with the Salvation Army toy drive and participation was higher than ever before,” said Piper’s Landing member Jeanne Lambdin, who coordinated the Holiday Giving drive. “Watching the gifts pile up under our tree was heartwarming and knowing how much joy these presents bring to children makes it so special.”   The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program has shared the thrill of opening the perfect gift with millions of needy children and teens since the late 1800s. This year the program is responsible for

fulfilling the wishes of 1,690 children in Martin County by providing them with a minimum of two toys and an outfit. “Piper’s Landing has been a generous supporter of our Angel Tree Program every year,” said Lieutenant Andrea Hoover. “Without them, we would not be able to help children in our community experience the joy of Christmas morning.” During Holiday Giving Night, members also enjoyed a performance by OPUS, Martin County High School’s premier chorale. “It was a lovely evening of giving back to the community. Our members were impressed with the extraordinary talent of the Martin County High School students,” Lambdin said. For more information about Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club, visit www.piperslanding. com.    The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. HUNTER’S from page B1 award-winning Hudson County Culinary Arts Institute in Jersey City, N.J., where DuPont studied prior to launching his 26-year career. If DuPont is typical of the students Hudson is turning out, the college has earned its bragging rights. DuPont also mentioned he gained part of his hands-on education working for a period with a 27 Gold Medal Award-winning chef in Morristown, N.J., E. Halibashi. The chef went back to the kitchen, and the dinner rolls were served. Mitch pointed out that wrapped pats of butter WEREN’T frozen! “That’s a sign of a classy restaurant,” he said. I agree. There’s nothing worse than trying to spread a cold, unyielding pat of butter on a warm roll baked the way it should be, just the right amount of crust on the outside, soft on the inside. We asked the chef to surprise us with the dishes he wanted us to sample, rather than ordering from the menu. The next course was a beautiful salad of field greens, goat cheese, slivered almonds (nice touch!), golden raisins, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and grated carrots, served with

Mitch got the wedge salad, a quarter head of iceberg lettuce with cherry tomatoes, crumbled REAL bacon pieces, red onions and crumbled bleu cheese. Of course I stuck my fork into Mitch’s salad. Fresh and delicious! While we were waiting for our entrees, I began noting the other aspects of my idea of a great dining experience: Our server, Crystal, is a South Africa native who transplanted herself to the U.S. nine years ago and I was taken with both her lilting accent and her knowledge of The Hunter’s Grill cuisine. She was at the table every time I thought about looking for her, and her service was superb. I observed the atmosphere — the red leather-covered benches

and chairs blend beautifully with the wood that appears to be mahogany, although the proprietor, Vijay, corrected my impression to tell me the furniture is actually a dark-stained oak. The windows are wood plantation-shuttered, and between the ornate but not ostentatious chandeliers throughout, and the various scenes of the hunt on every wall, set off in thick, embossed frames such as I imagine one would see in an English hunting lodge visited mostly by members of the royal family, it was all quite inviting and comfortable. Amidst all of this intake, I noticed the subtle music in the background: The selection of the moment was the 1973 hit, “Take to the Sky on a Natural High,” by the ‘70s R&B group, Bloodstone. Soothing, comforting sound — perfect accompaniment to the meal. By the way, did I mention The Hunter’s Grill has a full bar and a pretty decent wine list? They stock mostly California wines, which I like. But finally, Chef DuPont presented the entrees: The dish he placed in front of Mitch will be a feature on the new winter menu: Hunter’s Bistro Pasta, with jumbo shrimp and jumbo lump crabmeat, prepared in extra virgin olive oil, baby Portobello mushrooms, sliced sautéed garlic, light plum tomato, over linguine, all topped with crispy fried basil. Wonderful, but I let Mitch have most of that dish while the pièce de résistance was delivered: my perfectly cooked filet mignon, prepared au poivre, served with julienned zucchini, yellow squash and carrots and parmesan potatoes. Au poivre is a French method of preparation in which the steak is coated with peppercorns and seared in a hot skillet over high heat. The peppercorns form a crust on the steak, which complements the flavor of, in this case, a fresh, hand-cut steak that was perfectly cooked to my medium-rare preference. How did the chef know? He said I just looked like a filet mignon aficionado. OK, I’ll admit it …

Hunter’s Grill, Hobe Sound location, opened in December 2012. Vijay’s brother, Naval, opened the first The Hunter’s Grill in Potomac, MD., in 1978. The prices range from $5 (soup of the day) to $22 for my filet. Desserts are chocolate mocha cake, key lime pie, an apple cobbler cheesecake with walnuts, molten lava cake, and crème brulee. Our host recommended the apple cobbler cheesecake and it was swoon-worthy. There was a nice contrast between the textures of the cheesecake, cobbler and nuts. The desserts are priced from $5-$6.50. The restaurant also offers special gluten-free protein plates. They include an entrée such as grilled chicken, charbroiled lemon flounder and prime burger, with a price range of $9-$17, and two sides chosen from fresh vegetables, salad or sliced tomato and egg. The Sunset Menu, served from 4-6 p.m., features entrées that include Mahi Franchese, Chicken Penne and Flatiron Steak. It also includes soup of the day or salad and vegetables and potatoes. Meals are served with a complimentary glass of the house wine or domestic draft beer. The cost is $17.95. The restaurant offers a birth-
