Five Divorce Myths In answering questions for many clients considering divorce, I found there are a number of myths that need to be dispelled. This article is an attempt to address some key divorce myths I regularly encounter: 1. It matters if they cheated. In California, infidelity has no relevance to pursuing a divorce action. In 1971, California law was modified to allow either party to seek a divorce based upon irreconcilable differences, which can mean anything to anybody, including just drifting apart. Unless the parent’s behavior is out of control, it is highly unlikely that the court would consider any claim that a parent’s time with the children should be restricted. 2. You just need to fill out a few forms and submit them to the court and the court does the rest. While it is true that California prides itself on simplifying the Judicial Council forms that are submitted for processing divorce actions, properly completing those forms is not just an “add water and stir” event. An accurate understanding of the law and how it applies to those forms is crucial to properly proceeding on your family law matter. 3. Everything must be split equally. Division of property doesn’t have to be exactly penny for penny. The parties can even agree to an unequal division for many reasons. Sometimes an unequal division is adopted by the parties and approved of by the court for the purposes of making compromises on support amounts, satisfaction of community debt and for other equitable justifications.

4. It’s best to start hiding things. Any attempt to hide assets from the other spouse will only turn into bad news for the bad actor. If the court determines that there’s been a concealment of an asset, the person committing this offense could lose their share of the property to the other spouse as well as pay attorney’s fees and sanctions for their misconduct. 5.The kids always go to the mother. Family law courts have caught up with the concept of joint parenting and blended families. The result of this more modernized appreciation of both parents playing a significant daily role in a child’s life produces many different custody arrangements where both parents can maintain an active role in the child’s life. Western Railway Museum’s

Pumpkin Patch Festival

Weekends: October 12 - 27

Each Saturday and Sunday from October 12 - 27, the Western Railway Museum presents its annual Pumpkin Patch Festival. This classic harvest festival is a highlight of autumn, and for many, a family tradition. The Museum opens at 9:30am. The first express train leaves the Museum at 10am, with departures every half-hour until 4pm. Visitors can ride on a historic life-sized electrical-powered train going back in time 100 years on a scenic five-mile trip to Gum Grove Station, a wooded glen far from the trappings of modern life. At Gum Grove, guests can experience the huge hay bale fort, food, tractor rides, music, games and of course, pumpkins for sale, just in time for Halloween. It’s a real community effort, with three individual Rotary Clubs (Fairfield-Suisun, Cordelia, and Dixon), and 100 Museum volunteers all rallying together to make the event a success. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Western Railway Museum (a nonprofit educational institution) and the local Rotary Clubs who re-grant thousands of dollars to our community and youth activities each year. Advance tickets sales are available at WRM.org, or cash only is accepted at the Pumpkin Patch Festival. Admission: $14 Adults $12 Seniors (65 and up) $10 Children (ages 2 -10) NEW & ED Information & Advance Ticket Sales: WRM.org IMPROV S IE Facebook.com/WesternRailwayMuseum ACTIVIT R! Who doesn’t love a good garden brawl? That’s exactly what Center REPertory Company delivers in its latest comedy written by Karen Zacarías, who penned Center REP’s hysterical The Book Club Play. Native Gardens transports audiences to the suburbs, where the very pregnant Tania and her husband Pablo have purchased a house. Their new neighbors, Virginia and Frank, are a seemingly lovely couple and longtime members of the community. In fact, they are the unofficial king and queen of the whole neighborhood. But all it takes is a questionable fence line, a prizeworthy garden and tense rivalries to make Tania and Pablo realize their dream home may become the starting point of World War III.

REVE BISTRO While a trip to Paris may not be in the cards for me anytime soon, an excursion to Lafayette’s Reve Bistro settled my craving for French cuisine. It’s starting to feel like comfort food season, so my date and I started with crocks of house-made French onion soup topped with Gruyere and croutons. The rich broth coupled with sweet onions was just what I needed to combat the end-of-summer blues.   While we generally end up with a favorite entrée, it was a toss-up between boeuf bourguignon and poulet basquaise. The bourguignon consisted of red wine braised beef cheeks, pearl onions and button Salmon Verjus served at The Salt in San Ramon. Photo: Janet Fazio. mushrooms on a bed of mashed potatoes. THE SALT Inspired by 5,000 years of culinary flavors, San Ramon’s The Salt is a gastronomical delight for foodies near and far. Tucked away above downtown, this is a neighborhood gem featuring a stylish, big city feel with a menu designed to be savored. The Salt showcases a handful of entrées and several selections designed for sharing. My date and I started with a roasted head of cauliflower prepared with umami sauce, peas, fenugreek and sorrel. We paired this with two entrées: salmon verjus and lamb ribs. The salmon was encrusted in sumac and accompanied by a truffle and celeriac mash and a side of broccolini. While it was good, I loved the lamb ribs. The meat was tender and wildly flavorful. A beautiful and tasty crown of parsnip ribbons topped the dish, adding just a hint of sweetness. SABIO ON MAIN Drawing inspiration from the bounty of farm and produce provisions available in the Bay Area, Chef Francis and owner Jim McDonnell have created a chic dining experience at Pleasanton’s Sabio on Main. Having been to Italy on a cooking tour, I was excited to sample the tempura squash blossoms made with local chèvre and oyster mushrooms. Although a little different from the ones I’m used to, I would definitely recommend trying these. If you’ve got Oktoberfest on your mind, order the Jagerwurst sausage. It has a smoky flavor and comes with sides of sauerkraut, grits and for a hint of sweetness, baked apple. The cavatelli, a small pasta that looks like a hot dog bun, with eggplant, peppers and fire-roasted tomatoes is a great choice. Entrées start at $23. Full bar. Open Tuesday-Saturday for lunch and brunch and daily for dinner. 501 Main St. Pleasanton. SabioPleasanton.com

VINEYARD TABLE & TASTING LOUNGE Livermore’s iconic restaurant at Wente Vineyards recently underwent a metamorphosis, becoming the Vineyard Table & Tasting Lounge. The result is a warm, inviting spot to enjoy seasonal, sharable plates and entrées. We started our meal with fried halloumi and tomato salad filled with fresh fruit grown in the restaurant’s gardens. For entrées, we decided on two of the sharable plates, mac and cheese and smoked pork tenderloin. The mac and cheese (my favorite) was made with orzo, giving it a little lighter feel and taste. It was a good accompaniment for the pork tenderloin with cranberry bean, pancetta and corn relish. Plates start at $14. Beer and wine. Wednesday-Sunday 12-8pm. 5050 Arroyo Rd, Livermore. TOWN HALL THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

Tickets: $18-30

September 26 - October 19

Lafayette’s renowned Town Hall Theatre Company kicks off fall with a rollicking, gender-bending and heartfelt celebration of divas and difference. This good-natured comedy follows the exploits of Casey, a flat-broke musician whose young wife is expecting a baby. A fledgling Elvis Presley impersonator barely making a living, he finds a path to prosperity by becoming a lip-syncing drag queen. Casey’s transformation takes place at Cleo’s Lounge, a dilapidated small-time club in the Florida Panhandle that may not be ready for this magical metamorphosis. This fabulously flamboyant play debuted at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in 2014 and went on to win or be nominated for many theater awards, including an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.

The secret to the success of our volunteer Field Ombudsman Program is each volunteer’s ability to build relationships with residents. Regular visits help the volunteers to establish bond and trust with residents, learn more about the facility’s operations and the staff, and consequently become more knowledgeable and able to provide meaningful advocacy for quality care and resident’s rights. We are looking for volunteers who have compassion and respect for seniors, enjoy conversation, are good listeners, and have a ready smile.

October 11 – November 9 You’ll fall in love with the nightlife in this toe-tapping, seatswaying musical that flows with fun. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is the quirky story of two drag queens and a transgender woman who encounter an array of colorful characters who aren’t exactly receptive to their lifestyle. In a trip across the remote Australian desert in a lavender bus, encountering mishaps and other calamities, everyone finds a chance to change their views of what’s “normal” and what’s real. The show is peppered with a hit parade of dance favorites, including “It’s Raining Men,” “I Will Survive,” “Hot Stuff” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” The original musical was so successful in its native Australia that its Broadway debut was produced by Bette Midler and received many awards and nominations.

10TH ANNUAL WHEELS FOR MEALS RIDE

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26

Do your part to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research with a beautiful three-mile walk (with a one-mile shortcut) in San Ramon. The East Bay Walk to End Alzheimer’s goal is to bring the entire community together in the effort to defeat this devastating disease. As a participant, your fundraising dollars will fuel the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission to help make the dream of a world without Alzheimer’s a reality. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are allowed. Strollers are welcome, but bicycles and skates are discouraged. Register to walk and learn more at Act.Alz.org/EastBay2019 (FREE).

Embark on a beautiful bike ride from Shadow Cliffs Regional Park in Pleasanton in the 10th annual Wheels for Meals Ride, a charity event to support Meals on Wheels programs in Alameda County. Meals on Wheels delivers 2,200 nutritious meals to homebound seniors in Alameda County every day. The funds raised will go directly toward that effort. Choose from a 15-mile (perfect for families), 35mile (moderate) or 70-mile (advanced) course. Each route will be fully supported with SAG vehicles and rest stops.  Register and learn more at FeedingSeniors.org ($40-105).

YOUR TOWN

Daycation By Jessica Graham

Mother Nature may have waited until the end of summer to crank up the thermostat this year, but despite the unseasonably toasty days, the calendar says fall. This can mean only one thing: it’s time to plan your Halloween outings. If you love fall festivals, a trip to Dell’Osso Family Farm should be on your agenda. This is not the pumpkin patch of your youth where you wandered around a field of orange before finding a hard-to-lift pumpkin, took obligatory photos, slurped down some apple cider and then headed home.  Dell’Osso Family Farm, which began as a working asparagus farm in the 1920s by three Italian brothers, is a fall family adventure destination. Your admission fee provides access to a wide variety of fun, including the pumpkin patch, corn maze, a haunted

castle, an express train, hayride, mystery tour, carnival-style rides in kiddie land, an animal zoo, a Walkthe-Plank activity and more. With all the exciting activities to choose from, it’s hard to know where to begin. Dell’Osso Family Farm suggests you start by getting lost in their pumpkin maze. The massive corn maze labyrinths are part of a Dell’Osso tradition that has been going strong for 23 years. Initially, the Dell’Osso family designed the mazes by hand and plowed them using farm equipment. Today’s mazes are created using computers and GPS, bringing this traditional attraction into the digital age. Pick an entrance and see how long you take to find your way out. Also, be sure to check out Dell’Osso’s website to see aerial views of the mind-blowing mazes they’ve devised. Anyone with a sweet tooth will

want to visit the Country Store/ Bakery. Here you’ll find a variety of locally made goodies and apple spiced donuts. Before you head out the door, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Although it may be sandal weather, thrill-seekers who want to walk the 30-foot high plank before dropping to the ground (in a harness) need to wear close-toed shoes. For safety reasons, all Walk-the-Plank participants must fit into the safety harness and weigh between 60 and 250 pounds. It should also be noted that the mystery tour and haunted castle are not recommended for small children. After all, pumpkin patches are intended to be fun, not nightmare-inducing. Pig races take place twice a day during the week, and at regular intervals during the weekend. Check

Besides all the activities included in the admission fee, Dell’Osso also offers some add-on adventures. If you go: Find Dell’Osso Family Farm at 501 S Manthey Road in Lathrop. General admission is $14.95 per person Monday -Thursday and $19.95 Friday-Sunday. Admission is free for children 2 and under. Food has been the subject of art for centuries and often reflects the time in which it was created. Throughout history, artists have depicted food to represent issues of family, nutrition and social concerns such as famine and politics. This presentation pays homage to all things edible and features a traveling exhibition, Les Diners de Gala, a twelve-piece collection composed of fine art prints by the legendary Salvador Dalí.
