‘Special’ interest group Keep Longboat Special aims to block development of a hotel proposed for the north end of the island.

he Longbeach Village residents behind a grassroots effort to prevent Floridays Development Co. from building a 120-room hotel on the north end don’t believe the proposal is just a north-end issue.

They want all Longboaters to unite against the proposal.

The latest proposed development for the north end could spark a summer of email and direct mail campaigns.

Village residents Pete and Carla Rowan launched Keep Longboat Special last month as an offshoot of Save the Longbeach Village, a group that formed in 2013 to fight expansion plans for Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant & Pub. “‘Save’ was developed to try to protect the Village itself,” said Carla Rowan. “We didn’t want that group to become the father of this effort, so we’ve created another network dedicated to try to preserve the entire Key.” The new organization aims to defeat an Aug. 30 referendum that would lay the groundwork for the hotel (see sidebar, right). The group wants to make sure islanders see how the project will affect not just the gateway to Longbeach Village, but also the entire Key. The Rowans and fellow core organizers Craig and Georgia Walters have a list of roughly 400 email addresses they’ve already sent a list of “11 myths” they contend Floridays has created about the new hotel. They’ve also asked for volunteers to send 50 flyers each to island residents that cite traffic, the possibility of lowerend lodging, building size and other factors to elicit a “no” vote on the referendum.

“There are members from all over the island that are recognizing that the hotel is not a good idea,” said Georgia Walters.

Carla Rowan said that an informal survey she conducted last month showed that 75% of at least 80 respondents would be comfortable with the site converting to residential use. Other suggestions included green space, small commercial, such as a coffee shop or mixed-use.

change for the better,” said Georgia Walters.

Floridays Project Manager James Brearley said he was surprised and disappointed when he found out about the group, which he says is spreading misinformation about the project that is still in the early stages.

“Anyone saying that we are building a ‘low-end’ hotel is blatantly speaking mistruths in order to promote their agenda,” Brearley said. “The truth is that we are planning a very upscale project with a high level of onsite food and beverage service, a resortstyle pool, spa treatment rooms and other service amenities.”

Floridays plans to send out a mailer of its own “to provide our counter to the mistruths being spread by the group that has formed to oppose what we believe would be a positive project.”

Keep Longboat Special organizers contend that the proposed hotel will bring 300 people to the Village area at any given time of the year, which will clog roads and restaurants. Though the latest plans include a restaurant, Carla Rowan doubts it will be as selfcontained as developers claim.

“They will not be able to feed 300 people,” Rowan said.

A particular sticking point with Keep Longboat Special is that the hotel, which will operate under the Floridays flag, will bear a three-star rating.

“This is just a regular old threestar hotel that’s not on the beach and has no special amenities at all,” said Craig Walters. “People are alarmed at that, because that’s what you see in St. Petersburg and Fort Myers.”

But Brearley said in most cases, the quality of a hotel is not directly related to the star rating.

“It is a shame that we are having this level of discourse in discussing a project,” Brearley wrote in a point-by-point rebuttal to the myths email.

REFERENDUM 101

Voters will decide Aug. 30 whether Floridays can add density of up to six units per acre on a 2.6-acre cluster of properties southeast of the intersection of Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive — a total of 15 units. If voters approve the measure, the firm could then apply for 105 additional tourism units from the town’s pool of voter-approved potential rooms for the 120-unit hotel it seeks to build.

If voters approve the referendum, Floridays will then have to file for a rezone and comprehensive plan amendment to change the property’s future land use in September. Those proposals would go before the Planning and Zoning Board in November for recommendations, and the Town Commission would consider the plans the following month.

Siesta Key residents continue to search for a way around the city’s plans to dredge Big Pass for a long-term Lido Beach renourishment project.

That’s why on May 5, Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock found himself on another barrier island, explaining the town’s ongoing truck haul beach project to the Siesta Key Association.

Although Siesta residents might want the city to follow Longboat’s example to avoid disturbing the coastal status quo, Bullock made it clear that the truck project was not his first choice to replenish the eroding shoreline.

“You think, ‘Why would anyone want to haul sand by truck?’”

Bullock said. “‘It must be inconvenient and expensive.’ And it is.”

Bullock said the cost for a truck haul project can be two or three times more expensive than dredging an inlet or finding an offshore sand source, two more traditional renourishment options.

That’s not to say the truck haul is without its advantages. Longboat was unable to locate an offshore sand source that matched the quality of the sand on its beaches, and the Immokalee mine serving as the source for the truck haul has a nearly unlimited supply of compatible sand. More than a

month into the renourishment, Bullock said the town has only received two complaints about the trucks.

“I was pretty nervous,” Bullock said. “It’s worked surprisingly well in terms of impact on the community.”

Sarasota City Engineer Alex DavisShaw said the city would consider truck haul projects for renourishment emergencies.

Still, she said scrapping the Big Pass renourishment — which, at 1.3 million cubic yards, is more than six times larger than Longboat’s project — isn’t economically feasible.

“For the Army Corps project, it would be cost-prohibitive to get all the sand we need that way,” DavisShaw said.

There are Florida governments embarking on truck haul projects larger than Longboat’s. In Broward County, 38,000 trucks brought in 750,000 cubic yards of sand to renourish three beaches earlier this year.

That work came at a significant price, though. The Broward project had a price tag of $55 million, nearly twice the cost estimates for the Army Corps project on Lido.

The town hopes to also complete an emergency truck haul project that will bring 40,000 cubic yards of sand near the Resort at Longboat Key Club. (See page 5A.)

Town plans emergency beach project Longboat Key aims to place as much as 40,000 cubic yards of sand at the south end of the island this summer.

Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa has been meeting with Resort at Longboat Key Club representatives weekly for the last four months to discuss a topic familiar to him: the erosion that’s swept swaths of the southend beach away.

As the town undertakes three renourishment projects worth more than $16 million combined and encompassing 700,000

cubic yards of sand, a channel has formed along the south-end beach that is contributing to large losses near the resort — a stretch of beach that isn’t included in the three beach projects.

But Florensa is hopeful the town will be able to place as much as 40,000 cubic yards of sand on the threatened shoreline by the end of the summer, although there are logistical challenges involved with any emergency sand project.

The town has about $1.5 million available for such an undertaking,

which would include a truck haul of sand from a mine in Immokalee.

There’s a similar renourishment underway mid-Key, where the town is in the process of dumping 200,000 cubic yards of the sand from the same midstate mine.

“It’s very challenging to get trucks onto that beach,” said Florensa. “We were lucky when we we’re doing it there by the Colony because there’s a lot of room, and there are no guests.”

Meanwhile, Commissioner Irwin Pastor, who also serves as president of the L’Ambiance Condominium Association, has watched nature wreak havoc on the shores in front of his building,

located near the resort.

Earlier this year, Pastor said there was almost no beach left on which to walk. Since then, the sand has shifted to create a bit of new shoreline, while the beach behind the resort has thinned.

“We do have a beach now — a very, very short beach,” Pastor said. “It’s not nearly as critical as it was about two months ago.”

Still, Pastor hopes Key Club representatives and the town can work out a way to truck new sand onto the south end.

“Renourishment of our beaches is vital to the economics and ambiance of our Key,” said The Resort at Longboat Key Club General Manager Jeff Mayers in a statement. “We are pleased to be working closely with the town to implement the program and have confidence it will be completed in a timely fashion.”

Florensa also faces a timing issue that affects the emergency beach project on the south end. He worries that if sand were trucked onto the beach right now before filling the channel with sand, any newly placed sand would be swept away from the beach.

So the town will wait until a contractor completes the roughly $3 million dredging of New Pass, which will send 250,000 cubic yards of new sand to the beach in front of L’Ambiance north to Regent Place.

Although a bid protest has threatened to delay that plan, Florensa is confident contractors will be able to begin hauling by the end of July.

“The first thing I need to do is plug that (channel), that way the sand will stay much longer,” Florensa said. “Then we will start right away — and I mean right after — and do the truck haul.”

The sandbar on Jewfish Key is a popular spot for boaters and parties.

In recent years, residents have asked the town to increase enforcement of the area.

Despite dozens of vessels in the water, there was none of the usual booming noise from stereos that has echoed throughout the north end over the last several months.

“This last weekend — to us — it seemed like it was a little bit better,” said Ed Zunz’s wife, Pat, a former commissioner who has lived in Lands End for decades.

“There were a lot of boats, but it definitely was quiet.”

For that quiet, the Zunzes can

thank an organization called Floatopia — an informal group that holds parties on floats a couple times a year in the Miami area — and an incorrect report that it was planning an event for Coquina Beach. Even though the event’s location was incorrect and organizers ultimately canceled the party, Longboat Key police were out and visible.

“I increased patrols out there this weekend, and it did seem to

make some impact,” said Police Chief Pete Cumming. “We were more visible and just kept a lid on things.”

But long-term reprieve may come in two forms for residents seeking relief from noise associated with boats anchored around Jewfish Key: Cumming plans to increase the amount of marine patrol time to be similar to the weekend of May 1. And Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale has asked State Attorney General Pam Bondi for an opinion on whether Longboat police can cite boaters for violating potential new noise regulations.

Three weeks earlier, a fight resulted in minor injuries to a 41-year-old man.

“Some of us have had to call every week to complain” said Pat Zunz.

Further frustrating Zunz and fellow north-end residents, after the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office took over island dispatch services, they say calls for service about issues on Jewfish Key, located within the town’s jurisdiction but accessible only by boat, have been met with confusion.

“They once asked for a cross street,” Roth said.

‘ALMOST LIKE ABUSE’

Cumming plans to lighten water patrols during weekdays to provide more enforcement during the weekend.

He said the plan is to cut eight hours of marine patrol time during the week and add it to the weekend.

“Right now, we are primarily out there giving warnings and looking for compliance and not issuing citations,” Cumming said.

The complexity of enforcement is due in part to state legislation that prevents municipalities from regulating noise from vessels. The laws that give the state jurisdiction over noise create uniformity, making it so that a boat engine, for example, is subject to the same regulations across municipalities.

But Mooney-Portale contends that state law only covers noise from engines and other operational sounds, which the town does not seek to regulate.

“Courts have repeatedly held regulations of nuisance sound as an inherent authority of local

On April 24, police responded to a report of a fight on the sandbar in which two men began punching each other over comments made about a woman with the group. The aggressor ran onto the island, and police couldn’t find him.

In March 2015, commissioners asked staff to explore an ordinance that cites specific decibel levels for violations. Currently, the town’s code is subjective, describing noise that’s “plainly audible, and annoyance and a disturbance” as illegal, MooneyPortale said.

“Before we do it, we just want to make sure we have a legal opinion from a neutral third party who can weigh in on the enforceability,” Mooney-Portale said.

Although she’s confident the current ordinance — and one that would establish a decibel threshold for violations — is legally enforceable, an opinion from Bondi’s office in favor of the town would serve as legal ammunition if anyone challenged the law.

After receiving an opinion from the Attorney General’s office, town staff will then ask commissioners to spend as much as $75,000 for a consultant to establish decibel levels and equipment for officers to measure those levels.

group of Longbeach Village residents have formed Keep Longboat Special to oppose Floridays Development Co.’s plans for a 120-room hotel at the north end.

Keep Longboat Special is distributing what it describes as “several myths being circulated regarding the proposed Floridays hotel” on Longboat Key, as well as its take on each.

Here, the Longboat Observer presents some of the group’s list (the full list is available at YourObserver.com), its perspective, as well as Floridays Project Manager James Brearley’s responses. n The hotel will simply replace the Holiday Inn. Keep Longboat Special: The Holiday Inn was a true resort and a Holidome property. It had its own beach, which it maintained, boat rentals, tennis courts, an indoor pool, a huge atrium, game room, restaurant, bar and meeting rooms. The Floridays’ planned lower-end hotel will have none of these amenities.

Brearley: We are planning a boutique hotel with higher-end accommodations and per-night rates. We will be much smaller and higher-quality than the Holiday Inn, which had 250 rooms. n The proposed hotel will be a boutique hotel.

Keep Longboat Special: A boutique hotel (by today’s definition) is 10 to 100 rooms, upscale, stylish/themed, intimate, personal feeling, exotic amenities (e.g. spa, yoga, painting classes) in a unique setting (e.g. converted castle or convent), strives to be one-of-a-kind, distinctive architecture, upper income target market, and personalized service.

The planned lower-end hotel has none of these characteristics and no special amenities.

Brearley: We will be developing a boutique hotel that does all of the above. There is no official size that denotes boutique, but 120 rooms is less than the Vinoy and the Epicurean in St. Petersburg and Tampa, respectively. n The hotel will not add to traffic because people will stay on-site, and traffic problems are caused by bottlenecks off-Key. Keep Longboat Special: There is nothing other than the outdoor pool to keep guests on-site. Yes, the bottlenecks are not on Longboat Key, but guests will certainly add to the queue when they attempt to visit St. Armands Circle and Sarasota. Queues will start sooner in the year, be even longer and end later in the year.

Brearley: We view the traffic issue on Longboat Key as one of the most compelling arguments in favor of creating sustainable, on-island coffee shops and restaurants, which require hospitality rooms to thrive. On island, local businesses will prevent trips on and off island, which is what residents complain most about. n The hotel will be an

improvement over the empty bank and gas station.

Keep Longboat Special: Our informal survey has shown that more than 95% of folks prefer the abandoned buildings rather than having the hotel with the increased traffic and major negative disruption of our beaches.

Hotels not directly on the beach usually need to compete via pricing. Do we want the beginnings of St. Pete Beach and Fort Myers Beach on Longboat Key? Brearley: We have not conducted an official survey, and I don’t believe this group has, either. It has been our experience that the market allows a property to price itself based on its quality and location. We intend to build a quality, boutique hotel, and we all know that being located on Longboat Key is great! n Floridays has told

us things will be great.

Keep Longboat Special: What Floridays shows and says should be completely ignored at this point. The renderings, the talk of a tiki bar and full breakfast are not relevant at this stage of the process. All that comes later before the planning department, Planning & Zoning Board and commissioners. What is relevant now is the rezoning of the parcels from a zero impact status of the current office/commercial zoning to the high impact of a rezoning to tourist. Why would anyone vote to increase density and traffic, and negatively impact our beaches and neighborhoods?

Brearley: We think things will be great. They are correct that the nothing is finalized until the formal plan review process begins through the town’s planning department. However, so far citizens (including those sponsoring Keep Longboat Special) have inquired about renderings, amenities, and food and beverage. We have informally agreed to these points and will honor our word if the project

n Floridays is not asking for 120 rooms, only for a zoning change to Tourism-6 (six tourism units per acre).

Keep Longboat Special: The proposed plan from Floridays is the gateway to a 120-room, threestar hotel. The change in zoning is just the first step. If plans are approved, it will be far the densest development yet on Longboat Key (48 units per acre) – even denser than the new massive (former) Hilton, which is 37 units per acre. The Aug. 30 election is the only chance the voters have for a direct say in the ultimate outcome of the project.

Brearley: We have been upfront and clear about our desire for 120 rooms, which begins by asking for a referendum seeking T-6. It’s a confusing process, but we are following the rules. As the site currently exists, the density is 48 per acre. (To compare apples to apples, the Hilton site includes property that ends under the Gulf of Mexico.) We are working on adding property that would yield a density of 30.69 units per acre on our project. n The group Keep Longboat Special is just always against change and progress.

Keep Longboat Special: Keep Longboat Special is for 99% of the great work our town staff, boards and commissioners do. Keep Longboat Special is for preserving, protecting and enhancing all of Longboat Key. For preserving the special current ambiance we all enjoy, for protecting Longboat Key from inappropriate development, for less traffic, for protecting our beaches (turtles, birds, sand dunes and from trash), for the residents first, and for enhancing Longboat Key at every opportunity.

Brearley: This is the first time I’ve ever heard of Keep Longboat Special. I assumed it was formed by the leadership in the Village that is anti-hotel to fight this project.

Because of the economic problems of the rest of the world, it is frequently written that our economy will also soon be in trouble. How do we avoid that?

Households, banks and businesses have more cash than ever before in history. Consumer spending remains high. Americans are optimistic, and the economy continues to grow.

There is very little indication of a problem, or imminent problems, in the U.S. economy. Our large cash balances are the reason the economy is probably not facing a serious business downturn.

Consumer spending should help carry the day. A good number of countries in the rest of the world, however, are low on cash or broke.

t took four years after the end of World War II for the U.S. economy to regroup and convert to making consumer goods rather than war material.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hovered around 165 points during those transitional years.

Sixty-five years later, the Dow Jones is at 18,000 points, representing the greatest increase in wealth in history.

To accomplish this economic miracle, we loaded up the public balance sheet with debt. We also introduced socialism. The combination has resulted in $20 trillion injected into the spending stream that otherwise would not have been there. This huge wave of consumer spending since WWII has driven the growth of our wealth, and hence, the stock market, to new heights. Business fundamentals in America are

America has pretty much practiced Keynesian economics since the 1930s, especially from the 1960s forward. Is this economic success an indication that Keynesian theory really does work?

In hindsight, it looks as if Keynesian theories have worked.

Keynesian economics is based upon the concept of government borrowing heavily and providing money to employ people during difficult economic times. Then during good times, the government pays down debt with increasing tax revenues. But our government never pays down debt. Success has been because we have borrowed $20 trillion in the last 30 years to stimulate the economy. Not one dime of that money has been repaid. There is no budgetary item for repayment of debt. Problems will occur when the U.S., like other overly indebted countries, can no longer meet its debt payments.

Interest rates remain at record lows. Won’t banks have to start lending greater volumes of money if this economy is to grow?

Not necessarily. Businesses and individuals have saved so much money since 2008 that they are able to finance their growth without borrowing from the banks. They can use savings. It’s looking very much like the U.S. stock market could enjoy continued growth. Consumer spending, two-thirds of our GNP, is at all-time highs.

Corporate quarterly earnings are coming in at records again, after most analysts said earnings would be depressed.

The U.S. is “re-involved” in the Middle East. Will continued, and renewed, war increase the probabilities of our economic success?

Not really. Defense spending is no longer a huge percentage of our GDP. War has not caused our borrowing to increase. Welfare payments have. Belligerent countries like Russia and China spend a far higher percentage of their GDP on the military.

Speculators are mostly margin (debt) purchasers of stocks.

Poorly capitalized speculators can’t pay debts when significant market declines occur. After 2000 and 2007, stocks dropped 50% and 55% respectively. Most speculators were bankrupted.

Historically, high volume margin purchasing (stocks purchased with debt) precedes big market sell-offs. This is a “warning sign” economists watch closely.

Bottom line: In spite of warnings, as long as individual and corporate cash flow continue to remain solid, the economy should remain solid. Shortages of cash cause recessions and market downturns. There is no shortage of cash. Record increases in cash continue to accumulate.

When police arrived, the driver said he did not have cellular service at his parents’ condominium, so he drove into the neighborhood to make a call. An officer told the man he alarmed neighbors and should consider another place to make a call next time.

MAXIMILIAN ALTER Maximilian Alter, 91, of Longboat Key, died April 25.

Born March 27, 1925, in Vienna, in his youth he experienced the trauma of living under a despotic, inhumane government.

In 1939, to save him, his father sent him away from Austria. As a young boy, he spent several months alone in Paris before he could obtain an exit visa and immigrate to the U.S. He never saw his parents again.

For the next several years, he lived and went to school in New York and then Boston.

During this time, he met his future wife, Ethel Holzberg.

He joined the U.S. Army at the earliest possible date, and because of his excellence in school, he was selected for the elite Army Specialized Training Program, where he was trained for intelligence work at Berkeley. When this program was disbanded due to meeting combat personnel demand, he became a part of Patton’s Third Army. In 1945, he fought across France with his tank unit, crossed the Rhine and was in Germany when the surrender was announced. He then returned to the U.S. and was preparing to serve in the invasion of Japan when war in the Pacific came to an abrupt end. He immediately proposed to his future wife, and upon his discharge from the Army, he began his adult life in the U.S. Using the GI Bill, he attended Boston University and graduated with high honors in accounting in 1948. He earned his CPA and held positions of increasing responsibility at the Boston accounting firm Patterson, Teele and Dennis.

He then joined Wellman Inc., in Boston. He specialized in both tax law and international finance and was named the firm’s chief financial officer and senior vice president. He routinely traveled overseas to direct financial operations for the Wellman Co. in Ireland,

Germany, Switzerland and Taiwan. Subsequently, he served as senior vice president and director at Scientific Systems in Cambridge, Mass. He retired from Wellman Inc. in 1984.

Mr. and Mrs. Alter lived in Belmont, Mass., where they raised four children. In 1989, they purchased a home in Longboat Key and became permanent residents in 1994.

The Alters would have been married 70 years in May. Mr. Alter was preceded in death by his daughter, Arleen Hardie, of Chicago. He is survived by his wife, Ethel; children, Joanne and Ira Sackman, of Harrisburg, Penn., Ferne and John Day, of Lexington, Mass., and Richard Alter, of Guilford, Conn.; several grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.

A funeral service was held April 27.

RALPH HAROLD COHEN

Ralph Harold Cohen, 80, of Longboat Key, died April 27.

Born Nov. 21, 1935, in the Bronx, N.Y., he was passionate about his family, tennis, classical and klezmer music, Tom Clancy novels, pastrami sandwiches, spicy mustard, frozen pina coladas and bread — especially rye.

His friends and family greatly loved him and will remember him as a gentle, generous man.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Cohen; children, Jeff Cohen and Leslie Anderson; stepchildren, Jennifer Tuttelman and Alyssa Dver; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at Temple Beth Israel.

ANDREW SPEED

Andrew Speed, 90, of Longboat Key and Falmouth, Maine, died April 7.

He was born to Andrew and Annie Rae Speed on Christmas Day in 1925, in Cleveland. His parents had arrived only a few years earlier from Scotland. He was an energetic and industrious child and continued to demonstrate these traits throughout his life.

In 1943, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, completing boot camp at Camp Pendleton and advanced training in Hawaii. He volunteered for the Second Raider Battalion, BAR in D company, 27th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division. He left for Saipan in January 1945, and from Feb. 19 to March 23, he fought on Iwo Jima. By May, he was training for the invasion of Japan; however, the A-bomb was dropped Aug. 6, changing his mission. He was sent to Nagasaki a month later to serve eight months in the occupation of Japan.

Once he was honorably discharged in May 1946, it was time to return home. After a year of prep school, he attended Springfield College, where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in education.

In 1950, he married Roberta Allen and soon began his career at Skowhegan High School in Maine, teaching biology and physical education, serving as director of athletics and coaching football, where he led his team to the 1953 Kennebec Valley Championship.

He received his master’s degree in counseling and administration in 1960, and in 1963, he moved on from Skowhegan, spending the next 16 years as dean of students and instructor at Thomas College, assistant headmaster at Brighton Academy and director of guidance and pupil personnel services director in public high schools in Maine and Massachusetts.

NEDRA WILBERN

Nedra Wilbern, 86, of Sun City Center, died April 25.

She moved to Florida in 1975 and co-owned Mr. Casuals of Longboat Key. She moved to Sun City Center in 1983. She worked as an agent for Cruise World and was a member of United Community Church and the SCC Art Club.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ed Weber, Ed Cicinato and Howard Wilbern.

She is survived by her son, Todd Weber; daughter, Tina Kissinger; two grandchildren;

and two great-grandchildren.

The family will hold a private memorial service.

THEODORE ‘TED’ WILSON

Theodore “Ted” Wilson, 71, of Longboat Key, died April 28.

He was born April 20, 1945, in Akron, Ohio, where he was raised, and graduated from Akron University with a degree in accounting.

He served as chief financial officer for several companies both large and small, including the Observer Media Group from 2005 to 2010. He also owned an accounting practice on Longboat Key, for which he received the Small Businessperson of the Year award in 1998.

For close to 30 years, he called Longboat Key his home and loved every minute he lived there. It wasn’t just its beauty and wonderful climate he loved but the many friendships he made with the people he met there through his active participation in the community.

He will undoubtedly live on through their fond memories of him and his kindness and generosity over the years.

Along with his many cherished friends, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Linda Wilson; daughter, Dawn Harvey; two grandchildren; sister, Judy Williams, also of Longboat Key; and two brothers, Brandt and Richard Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Kidlinks, which brings healing and hope to gravely ill children through music and media, 6387B Camp Bowie Blvd. #378, Fort Worth, TX 76116, or call Stephanie, 817-470-0286.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson supported the organization since its founder sang one of his songs for them at their wedding more than 30 years ago.

In 1979, he began a new career with the Department of Defense as an education specialist with the U.S. Navy, where he was honored with the Educational Specialist of the Year Award in 1987.

In 1979, he married Barbara Dulko. In retirement, they enjoyed summers in Falmouth and winters on Longboat Key, continuing their love of being on the water. Summer activities for him included teaching sailing, working on the windjammer Mary Day, cruising Maine’s coastline and managing a resort in Boothbay Harbor. However, in Florida, golf soon competed with boats for his attention.

His anonymous acts of generosity, his love of teaching and his students and his genuine concern for people left a lasting mark on all who knew him, and as his Christmas birthday approached each year, he received countless calls, notes and visits from former students and people whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara, and his four children, Linda, Gregg, Bonnie and Gary, and their families.

he Payton Wright Foundation hosted its eighth annual golf tournament May 6, at the Resort at Longboat Key Club.

More than 200 people participated in the tournament, including country music singer David Nail.

“I grew up in a very, very small town and was very naïve about things like this that affect people for the rest of their lives,” Nail said. “Hearing this story, it hits home, and it really touched me. I just wanted to give back.”
