Rising above the challenge Freedom Elementary Principal Guy Grimes had a higher calling April 13. After his students raised more than $3,000 for classroom supplies during its “Penny Wars” fundraiser, Grimes had to spend 12 hours on the school’s roof — four hours for every $1,000 raised. Brenda Taylor’s kindergarten class raised the most money — $500 — earning an ice cream party and a squirt gun war with Grimes.

Built in 1914, the 5,500-square-foot Myakka City Schoolhouse building hopes to receive funding via a grant in the state’s budget.

After trying to become a Certified SolidWorks Expert for the past six years, Braden River High junior Tim Ackaway learned April 9 he had become one of 3,000 people to earn the certification. The program is a computer-aided design and engineering program.
