‘Pathless Woods’ invites viewers to experience the world through artist Anne Patterson’s eyes.

here are some instances in which words simply fail. All the poetic lan-

Inside the gallery, a giant cube of gradient color hangs suspended from the ceiling, shimmering in the low light. Approaching the work reveals that it’s constructed using loads of satin ribbon — 24 miles of it, to be exact.

The ribbon — nearly a marathon’s worth — is cut into 15-foot strips, arranged by color and draped to the floor from ropes diagonally strung overhead. Viewers can stand on the periphery or venture in to walk through the mazelike, iridescent installation.

“It’s something that’s really tough to describe without seeing,” says Patterson. “It’s like swimming through color.”

Adding to the experience, artist Adam Larsen projects scenes from nature across the ribbons, which split and obscure the light and images uniformly. Music plays in the background and Beau Rhee injects forest-like scents into the gallery.

It’s sensory overload. But it’s also Patterson’s attempt to portray her reality in a tangible way, through art.

Patterson has synesthesia, a neurological phenomenon that blends the senses, causing one sensory stimulus to trigger another.

Some synesthetes experience letters or numbers as colors. Others

might associate sound with touch.

For Patterson, music — especially classical music — elicits color.

“Some music just sounds blue,” she says. “Or green. I’ll see shapes and directionality. Some pieces feel round; others feel angular. My art is a response to that, and I try to capture that experience in a way.”

A SEA OF COLOR

From beyond the gallery doors, “The Garden of Cosmic Speculation” by Michael Gandolfi can be heard echoing off the museum walls.

It’s the song Patterson listened to while creating “Pathless Woods,” and it has become part of the installation.

The piece, she says, isn’t an exact replica of what she experiences when listening to music. To her, in fact, the song sounded almost entirely blue. But to give people a more immersive experience, she expanded the color palette and range of senses.

She’s standing where the blue and purple ribbons fade into red ones, following one of the satin strips up toward the ceiling with her fingers. This, she says, is the emotional heart of the work. To her, the cooler shades are more somber, while the reds are warmer and more comforting.

“It’s meant to be an experience,” she says. “You can approach it from any angle, but as you’re walk-

ing through, the color scheme is changing as you find your way, and it evokes different emotions.”

She’s done similar installations previously. Her 2013 project, “Graced With Light,” which she installed in the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, marked her first true foray into exploring synesthesia through art.

Unlike “Pathless Woods,” however, the ribbons were suspended 16 feet above the ground, where patrons would stand beneath it, gazing skyward, evocative of the cathedral setting.

When she came to The Ringling to begin working, she knew she

wanted to approach this installation differently to best fit the smaller space. The idea started with the desire to create a levitating cube of color that could be experienced from afar or within.

“The gallery space definitely informed the work,” she says. “I decided to bring the ribbons all the way to the floor, to allow people to interact with it. To maneuver through it, you have to use your hands and wade through the ribbon. It really is like swimming through a sea of color.”

She’s painted since childhood, but her professional career began as a student torn between architecture and set design.

“I chose set design,” she says.

“It had all the aspects I liked about architecture and none of the parts I didn’t. It was much more abstract.”

She began to design sets for theaters in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, as well as creating visual accompaniments for the San Francisco Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. She found that using color and visual components to make music more

expressive came naturally.

It’s also what led her to discover her synesthesia.

In 1993, she designed her first opera, “The Barber of Seville,” at the Aspen Music Festival. Listening to the music on a nearly constant basis, she discovered something new.

“Right away, I was seeing colors — oranges and reds and magentas,” she says. “I didn’t tell anyone at first. I thought it was kind of strange. But it kept happening more and more. I remember later, with the Atlanta symphony, thinking, ‘This music is round.

We need to incorporate that into the set design.’”

cannot all conceal.”

It’s a sentiment Patterson hopes to convey in her installation. And walking through the dangling ribbons, the parallel is evident.

Unable to see more than a few inches ahead, the art becomes disorienting — like being lost in the woods.

But for Patterson, that’s not a bad thing.

“Everyone’s had that experience of realizing you’re a little bit lost,” she says. “It’s scary, but it’s beautiful. There’s adventure in making your own path and a sense of wonder that comes with losing yourself — even for just a little while. I hope people experience that.”

explains Corinne. “Subject, verb, modifier is the usual order — but it’s not rigid. If you’re not careful, you can sound like Yoda. One of my lines was, ‘Do you think you’re going to translate for me?’

I translated that into ASL as ‘Translate think you will?’”

On stage, it’s easy to get lost in translation. Corinne coped by ignoring the first commandment of acting school … Thou shalt listen.

“I learned when to turn off my senses,” she says. “It’s a strange game of avoiding eye contact and not watching people talk. I do some lip reading; my character can’t. So, I’ll look at the other actor’s hands and not in the eye.

Or I’ll glance back and forth between their eyes and hands but avoid their lips. It’s very strange.”

Corinne adds that, “Jason has it way harder, bless his heart. I’m signing in ASL but not speaking.

He speaks my lines for the audience — and the words are usually in a different order.”

Technical questions aside, a gestural performance can easily resemble an over-the-top silent movie actor. How’d Corinne keep from going too far?

“My mom said, ‘Don’t worry about it. Throw yourself into it — and don’t hold back. I’ll tell you if you go too far. You probably can’t.’”

Kelly and Corinne have done this before, of course. They enjoy working together, and they work just a little harder when they do.

“Corinne’s an inventive actor who’s grown up in the theater and absorbed the magic to the point of second nature,” says Kelly. “She’s one of the finest actors I’ve ever worked with. If she heard me, she’d say, ‘You’re just saying that because you’re my mom.’ But it’s true.”

“My mom and I work together pretty well,” says Corinne.

“We’re both very passionate about the subject of this play.

She’s got very high standards, but she’s open to input and collaboration. I know some ASL;

she doesn’t. She’d say ‘How would you do it? What direction would you go?’”

Backstage collaboration is always a means to an end, even if it’s all in the family. The internal audience doesn’t count. The audience in the seats does. How have non-hearing theatergoers responded so far?

“During research and rehearsal, they helped us get it right,” says Kelly. “They were very touched when they saw the play.

Some of the older ones remember the reality behind it. A few things have changed since then.

Sadly, the core story of some people trying to force an identity on others is still as right as rain.”

Beer enthusiasts ‘Sip the Sunshine’ T

he beer was flowing Oct. 29 as guests poured into Sip the Sunshine, an all-Florida craft beer festival.

The inaugural event, organized by Mark Tuchman, Dean Lambert and Nikki Logan Curran, brought 50 Florida craft breweries and more than 100 beers to Nathan Benderson Park. The event benefited the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee’s College of Hospitality and Tourism’s Food and Beverage Science program, which helps train future Florida brewers.

While craft beer enthusiasts enjoyed samples and food from various restaurants, Jah Movement Reggae Band, Have Gun Will Travel and The Heavy Pets performed live music.

Grammy Award-winning band Blues Traveler headlined the Sundown Session concert.

Ballet celebrates 10 years of Iain Webb Celebrating his 10th season as director of the Sarasota Ballet, Iain Webb paired key reprisals with new premieres for the 2016-2017 opening performance.

Dominic Walsh’s “Wolfgang for Webb,” Antony Tudor’s “Continuo,” Ricardo Graziano’s “Sonata in Four Movements” and Joe Layton’s “The Grand Tour” were on the bill for the opening performance of the Sarasota Ballet’s 2016-2017 season.

The show was a mixture of key reprisals and new premieres celebrating the 10th season with Iain Webb as director.

As always, the program showcased a piece that would suit all different dance enthusiasts’ tastes — contemporary, lyrical, classical and Broadway-type story ballet — which highlights the varied strengths of the nationally acclaimed ballet company.

Walsh’s “Wolfgang for Webb” was one of the first pieces Webb commissioned for the Sarasota Ballet, and he thought it fitting as the opening act for his anniversary season. Not performed for seven years, it was refreshing to see this ingenious, contemporary piece, based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s life and set to his music, performed again.

“Wolfgang for Webb,” the first act of Walsh’s “The Trilogy: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,” begins with a billowing piece of white silk engulfing the stage with different body parts moving to the music and jutting out of its holes.

Ben Kay showed a new, confident maturity in his dancing as Mozart, yet retained a soft sense of movement and style. He again demonstrated this new strength

as a partner in a pas de deux with Mozart’s muse, Victoria Hulland, which included complicated lifts, creating elegant lines.

Tudor’s “Continuo” was a lovely, lyrical piece set to Pachelbel’s “Canon in D.” With no scenery or plot and simple light blue costumes, one could concentrate on the choreography and dancing by the three couples: Ellen Overstreet and Ricardo Rhodes, Amy Wood and Jacob Hughes and Abbey Kay and Daniel Pratt.

Like the title suggests, the choreography continues from couple to couple, and patterns emerge onstage among the dancers.

from the ballet’s current resident choreographer and principal dancer, Ricardo Graziano.

“Sonata in Four Movements” is set to John Knowles Paine’s Sonata in A minor, Op. 1 and premiered this summer at the 1932 Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Similar to “Continuo,” “Sonata in Four Movements” was also a plotless piece with no scenery but featured four couples. This piece featured the company’s strongest dancers — Christine Windsor, Victoria Hulland, Kate Honea and Elizabeth Sykes. These dancers made the quite complicated choreography look effortless and simple, proving that these dancers are elite professionals. Graziano must have known this, because the choreography showcased the women, giving them each their time to shine with solos and minipas de deuxs in the finale.

But the real star was Christine Windsor, who exuded endurance and elegance during a more than 7-minute pas de deux with Edward Gonzalez. Almost double the amount of time spent in a pas de deux, the two impressed with press lifts and catches. Windsor was poised as a principal ballerina in this piece, yet she’s surprisingly ranked as a coryphée.

Joe Layton’s “The Grand Tour,” set to music by Sir Noël Coward, and arranged by Hershy Kay, was the perfect piece to close the show, demonstrating both technical skill and humor in their acting abilities. Wood was absolutely heartwarming as the American Tourist aboard a cruise with the stars of film and stage. And Jamie Carter was perfectly poised as Coward with the sophisticated sultriness of Gertrude Lawrence (danced by Victoria Hulland) by his side.

An evening of fun at Sarasota Opera’s season opener EDWARD ALLEY CONTRIBUTOR

As welcome as the cooler, drier breezes of fall, Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” arrived on the stage of the Sarasota Opera House Friday night for its first visit.

Greeted by a near-capacity house, this new production is a wonderful relief from the quadrennial cacophony of speeches and rallies.

The story is an old one: Don Pasquale, a rich older bachelor, disinherits his nephew to take a young bride, is thwarted by a plot to marry what he believes to be a sweet young thing from a convent, only to be duped into thinking that she is the exact opposite, a shrewish extravagant bully, turning Pasquale’s life upside down.

Then, while reality is waiting to surface, more minor complications arise, in true Comedia dell’arte tradition. But of course, all ends well with happiness and forgiveness all around.

The opera, which premiered in Paris in 1843, is considered the last of the great buffo operas. It is a treasure trove of melody with all the champagne bubbles of a Rossini opera as well as Donizetti’s lilting waltz tunes, setting the stage for Offenbach’s later comic operas.

Written for four of the great singers of that time, “Don Pasquale” has big vocal demands in every role — and Sarasota Opera’s singers certainly rose to the challenge. Marco Nistico was

singing his first Pasquale, and even though he lacked a bit of basso heft in his hearty baritone, he was completely convincing as the old codger.

As Ernesto, Hak Soo Kim’s tenor is both darker and fuller than in his earlier appearances here and was a delight to hear, especially the offstage serenade with harp that opens the final scene.

Baritone Gideon Dabi was big of voice and gesture as Dr. Malatesta — the engineer of the plot to dupe Pasquale — in his beautifully sung aria and duets with Norina and Pasquale. Both Dabi and Nistico were outstanding in the machine-gun patter of their Act 3 duet, which received a welcome encore — cleverly added to the staging.

Angela Mortellaro as Norina virtually dominated every scene she was in, from her opening scene and aria, beautifully sung with a lovely solid and secure sound and coloratura and high notes to burn, to the duets with Malatesta and Pasquale, and all the ensembles, once again showing the excellence of the singers of Sarasota Opera.

All the stage goings on were skillfully planned and staged by Stephanie Sundine, and her singing actors (or acting singers) were completely convincing, especially Nistico — a slim man padded to be portly.

The Sarasota Orchestra was in the pit and played flawlessly for the knowledgable conducting of Victor DeRenzi. Especially out-

standing were the solos of Natalie Helm, cello, Michael Dobrinksi, trumpet, and harpist Shelly Du. No credit was listed for the design of the excellent set, which was lighted by Ken Yunker with his usual flair, enhancing the fine period costumes of Howard Tsvi Kaplan and Audrey Bernardin’s wigs and makeup.

Excellent subtitles were provided by Words for Music, and the final line of the opera, “Old men who marry are not very smart,” elicited laughter from the audi-

ence, which had indeed experienced an evening of rollicking and roaring fun.

The presentation and singing of Opera Buffa are indeed tough animals to tame, since there is such a fine line between overacting, oversinging, and “just right,” but this production of “Don Pasquale” by the Sarasota Opera comes pretty darn close — as close as you’re going to see for a long time. And “Pasquale” is here until Nov. 13.

Key to the Cure is known not only as being the kickoff to the Sarasota social season, but also as the perfect opportunity to show off that pink gown that’s been itching to make its event-season debut! This year, the event committee made history by adding purple to its traditionally pink dress code, and attendees jumped at the opportunity. Honoree Chairwoman Ariane Dart donned a gorgeous oneshoulder gown with a fabric rose, and Susan Jones brought her A-game, as always. Jones stunned in not only a purple feather skirt, but also in a pair of 5 1/2-inch purple suede platform Brian Atwood stilettos that she happened to find at the top of her shoe cabinet — what she calls an act of luck and closet karma. “The heal is a silver pin,” she says. “Definite man-killers, for sure.”

Under the Sea Guests at the annual Oceanic Evening gala enjoyed a unique starter to their dinner, courtesy of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s Mote Aquaculture Park (MAP). The gourmet dishes featured sea purslane, a sea vegetable grown at MAP using aquaponics — “raising seafood while using the wastewater to fertilize salt-loving crops,” as Kaitlyn Fusco, Mote spokeswoman, describes it. She says the project uses eco-friendly technology developed by Mote scientists to raise red drum, which is now being sold to restaurants along the Suncoast as well as sea purslane and saltwort, which are edible sea vegetables that can be found at the Sarasota Farmers Market.
