ast season, Ringling College’s Richard and Barbara Basch Gallery was home to priceless pieces of Italian glass, abstract paintings and other visual art. To kick off the gallery’s season this year, things are a bit different.

Chalk, vinyl and charcoal are on display, and there won’t be any frames. For this show, the wall is the canvas.

Writing on the Walls “Four Artists / Four Walls,” which opened Aug. 21 and runs through Sept. 22, features massive installations by four local artists: Dustin Juengel, Patrick Lindhardt, Nathan Skiles and Steven Strenk. Each artist selected one of the gallery walls and spent a week creating his mural right on the surface.

Mark Ormond, the college’s curator of exhibitions, says he developed the idea for the exhibition over the course of the last seven years as he noticed students’ work continuing to shrink.

“One of the things that excites students is to see large-scale work,” he says. “I wanted to challenge four faculty members to make large-scale drawings and actually use the wall as the ground of the drawing.”

The four artists spent long hours developing their respective pieces, which include brightly colored chalk portraits, a massive blueprint, a charcoal-drawn glimpse into an artist’s studio and and a vinyl illustration of sacred geometry.

“I don’t think I’ve ever drawn right on the wall before,” says Juengel. “I’ve used large canvas before, but this definitely the largest piece I’ve done.”

For his wall, Juengel drew three dominant figures: an ancient bearded Greek head, a shirtless man hoisting a piece of statue and a bright purple cow.

“The pieces slowly evolved,” he says. “I had never worked with

chalk before, so I got four different colors. I liked how the purple and the orange connected with the space.”

Kinetic sculptor Steven Strenk also ventured outside his comfort zone for his oversized chalk blueprint of a Rube Goldberg-esque device.

Armed with a chalk line, a wooden compass and a steady hand, Strenk laid out the bolts, nuts and conveyer belts onto the wall alongside his fellow artists.

“What I really enjoyed about this whole process was the mixing back and forth of different ideas,” he says. “There’s this huge conversation that you normally wouldn’t have, because the artists are very solo. It’s nice working in a shared space. A whole different conversation happens.”

When the exhibition closes Sept. 22, the artists’ work will be painted over to make room for the next show. But the impact the art has on viewers will have a lasting impression.

“The artists aren’t always going to be present when the visitor comes to the gallery,” says Ormond. “But because of the energy they’ve invested in the wall, and because the wall is part of the building, there’s an energy in the space that I don’t think you necessarily have when you’re hanging a framed painting on the wall.”

DUSTIN JUENGEL n Weapon of Choice: Sidewalk chalk “I’ve never used chalk before. I gave it a try, and it worked out nice. I liked how the color connected with the space. I thought I needed way more orange to make that purple pop.”

PATRICK LINDHARDT n Weapon of Choice: Charcoal pencils “I’m a big fan of charcoal, and I use a lot of it in my work. I’m also a big fan of alpha coloring.

While applying the charcoal pencil onto the surface, use a wet paintbrush, and it applies as a liquid charcoal paint.”

NATHAN SKILES n Weapon of choice: Vinyl “I usually use vinyl as a tool and not the final product, but I put the pattern for the design into a computer program and it cut it into the vinyl.

Then, I stuck the vinyl on the wall and peeled it off to reveal the pattern beneath. The first time I tried, it tore off the paint and wouldn’t stick. I like inserting themes of destruction in my work, so it was an unexpected positive.”

STEVEN STRENK n Weapon of choice: Chalk reel and compass “My sculptures are very clean and very tight.

So I’m making these drawings that are very clean and very tight. The OCD part of me wants to make these clean things just to see if I could do it. I like to challenge myself.”

The giant cube at the corner of North Tamiami Trail and Martin Luther King Jr. Way is more than just a piece of art welcoming visitors to the Ringling College of Art and Design. A sort of Rubik’s cube of more than 24 faces, it’s also a visual representation of the school’s diverse and growing student body.

Every August, the school welcomes about 300 incoming students from across the state, country and increasingly, abroad.

According to President Larry Thompson, this year’s class came from the largest pool of applicants in the school’s history, and 20% of the students were international.

On a sweltering day last week, a group of incoming freshmen met beneath the cube, each ready to make his or her mark on Sarasota.

Here are some of their stories.

“I’ve always been interested in capturing people’s realities.”

Morello says she hopes to one day work in a big city, like Los Angeles or New York, but she was drawn to Ringling’s strong reputation and intimate environment.

“It felt like home,” she says.

“The classes are one-on-one. I don’t want to be at a school where the professor doesn’t know my name, where I’m a number.”

NEW YORK TO SARASOTA

Leandra Pearson left her hometown of Queens, N.Y., for Sarasota in pursuit of her dream job: graphic design.

Pearson’s journey began in high school, when a teacher introduced her to graphic design.

“I like the way it speaks to people on every level,” she says. “You can combine graphic art with anything, including traditional drawing.”

Pearson’s portfolio includes photo-realistic renderings of people and places, and she says she’s excited to expand her skill set in a field that’s more far-reaching than people might realize. When asked what graphic designers do, Pearson’s answer is simple.

“I tell them to look at their iPhone, their clothes — everything around us,” she says.

Today, his dream is still to create characters, only now, instead of on paper, they’ll live in video games.

Riquenes fell in love with video games as a child and teenager, and now, as he studies game art at Ringling, he hopes to create memorable characters and games and help change the perception of games as legitimate art.

“Video games are a powerful product that create memories and bonding between family and friends,” he says. “It’s a hobby shared by half of the nation.”

Incoming Ringling College freshmen Lucas Riquenes, Leandra Pearson, Jack McCaffrey, Rebecca Morrello and Mark Lim bring different perspectives but a shared drive to Sarasota.

WHOLE NEW WORLDS

Born and raised in Singapore, Mark Lim was always intrigued by computers. While studying computer science in high school, he realized he wanted to use the technology for something more creative than math and coding.

He wanted to create new worlds with computer animation.

After graduating and completing Singapore’s two-year manda-

tory military service, the 21-yearold stumbled upon a short film by a student from Ringling College, and he decided to make the move.

Working in computer labs decked out with posters from successful animated films that Ringling alumni have worked on, Lim says he’s inspired to start his own career in computer animation.

“You have so much freedom,”

he says. “It’s a blank page, and you can do whatever you want.”

MORE THAN A GAME

Miami native Lucas Riquenes has always had the urge to create.

As a child, he’d draw imagined characters anywhere he could: notebooks, scratch paper — even on desks.

“Not expressing myself artistically would just roil me up,” he

Jack McCaffrey always knew that a traditional college wasn’t for him. Spending his childhood making stop-motion films in his basement, the McLean Virginia native says filmmaking has always been his goal.

And at Ringling, he says he found a major that perfectly suits his brand of storytelling: motion design. Only in its sixth graduating class, the blossoming field blends design, animation and graphics to produce unorthodox short films, title sequences for movies, commercials and other animated graphics.

Having already worked on more than 100 short films, including “Magic Marker,” which won the grand prize in its division last year at the Virginia Film Festival, McCaffrey says his early taste of success has him excited to see what else he can accomplish.

“That was really surreal, but it was a great experience seeing my film being played on the big screen,” he says. “It was a great feeling.”

The Mote in Newton’s Eye MARTY FUGATE THEATER CRITIC

Urbanite Theatre is currently serving up Lucas Hnath’s “Isaac’s Eye,” a post-modern gumbo of fact and fiction about the life of Sir Isaac Newton. Of course, when it comes to the great physicist, the lines of fiction and fact are blurred to begin with …

Did Newton really sit under the apple tree? Did he actually stick a needle in his tear duct to investigate the properties of light?

To clear things up, Hnath’s helpful narrator (Tony Stopperan) spells out the true facts on a giant blackboard. That way, you’ll know what happens on stage is mostly fiction. And in case you forget the play’s a play, the narrator announces each act and scene. The result is a crisp lesson on what didn’t happen.

In the events that didn’t unfold, young Newton wants to get into the Royal Society and needs middle-aged Robert Hooke (Robby May) to open the door.

Hooke wants to keep Newton out, because Newton’s theory of optics supersedes his own. Hooke shows up in Newton’s hick town and attempts to kick Newton’s ambitions to the curb.

The stakes escalate to a game of mutual blackmail and a love triangle between Hooke, Newton and Newton’s girlfriend, Catherine (Kim Stephenson). Hooke deduces that Newton doesn’t actually perform his experiments, because he thinks he knows God’s mind. He dares Newton to go through with one of his most audacious exercises which would be, hmmm, the one where he sticks a bodkin in his tear duct and jams it against his eyeball. That’s when things get interesting …

There’s no point in saying what happens next because it didn’t. The main narrative is a lie. (I know, because it’s not on the blackboard.) We all know what actually happened: Newton got into the Royal Society, cooked up calculus, hatched the theory of gravity and didn’t put his eye out.

There’s a good chance he burned Hooke’s portrait. (I know. I saw it on “Cosmos.”)

Director Vincent CarlsonBrown serves up this mad science lesson with brio.

The action unfolds in the shadow of a giant blackboard, and anachronistic dialog resembling “Entourage”characters in a bad mood. Is nothing sacred? Evidently not—but it’s very funny.

Stopperan conveys the play’s untruths with manic delivery worthy of John Cleese. Williamson’s Newton resembles a petulant, ex-child prodigy: an egomaniacal rock star who takes applause as his birthright. May’s Hooke reacts to Newton the way Elvis greeted the Beatles. While he’s no scientific slouch, this cold, calculating creep rightly sees Newton as a threat. The play hinges on Stephenson’s Catherine. She’s the normal one, the sane one, the sexy one—Newton’s earthly tether that keeps him from drifting to the heavens.

It’s a highly entertaining play, full of comedy both broad and brainy. The Urbanites bring it to life with smart directing, surreal staging and fine acting. You get caught up in the mad, postmodern gallimaufry. Apart from sheer cleverness, the play goes to a lot of trouble to answer a very simple, human question: Why did Sir Isaac Newton turn his back on love and live a monastic existence pursuing scientific truth?

Narcissistic egotism is the play’s answer. If you ask me, I’d say Newton’s love affair with the cosmic order crowded out any chance for human love.

However you balance the equation, it adds up to a great night of theater.

THE PROPOSAL

After meeting two years ago through a mutual friend, Caleb Jones proposed to Liz Murray Nov. 26, 2014, at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. Liz thought they were meeting Caleb’s family for an early Thanksgiving dinner. Little did she know that her whole family would be there as well, and that Caleb was about to propose to her in the garden. After she said “yes,” they enjoyed dinner at Jack Dusty with both of their families.

For the wedding, the couple decided to do something a little different: They had an intimate ceremony and dinner with their families July 17at the Oxford Exchange in Tampa. The following night, they threw a celebration at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota with all of their family and friends.

CEREMONY AND RECEPTION:

One special touch at the wedding was the place cards. The couple picked out photos of everyone in attendance the first night and had them printed out on Polaroids. It was a great conversation starter and got everyone laughing.

Another crowd favorite was the video that videographer Zac Holmstrom put together from the ceremony (in less than 24 hours) to share a glimpse of the intimate Friday-night ceremony at the couple’s Saturdaynight celebration.

The couple honeymooned at Sugar Beach Viceroy in St. Lucia.
