As we worked on the third issue of YOUR, I had the special opportunity to engage in conversations with a number of community organizations in a less formal way and to discuss what the coming season meant to them.

For me, Christmas has always been a very significant holiday and, with my birthday only a few days before, it was always a special week of family time; full of tradition, food and the great community around us.

When I was young, about six, I remember my Mom taking my sister and me to Hillside mall to select a tag off the Gift Trees for families in need. This seemed like such a simple concept, to pick a child who may not have the same privileges and to give them a gift. That first year I remember selecting a tag belonging to a little girl the same age as me, who happened to have the same number one item on her wish list. As I got older and the tradition continued, I felt so lucky that I had the opportunity to make a positive impact on a child in my community. It was a simple tradition in our house and to this day I find it to be one of the most meaningful of Christmas traditions.

My suggestion for this season is to take a few moments among the holiday hustle and bustle to slow down. Take the time to find a cause, organization, or community project that speaks to you, something you can become passionate about.

Get involved and share at least one of your three T’s; be it running a coat drive for a local homeless shelter, taking pet food, toys or blankets to the SPCA, serving a hot meal in this colder weather, donating to your not-for-profit of choice or making a commitment to volunteer in the coming year. Find a way to share your T’s in an impactful, enjoyable and rewarding way for both yourself and the community.

Finally I would like to sincerely thank all of my readers for once again picking up YOUR. I truly hope that as the publication grows so too does your enjoyment of reading it. I encourage you to share your thoughts, feedback and story ideas with me; my goal is to connect like-minded people and organizations looking for a way to give back to develop a stronger and more cohesive community. Have a wonderful holiday season, everyone, full of warmth, happiness and time with loved ones.

The Concept Behind YOUR Magazine

The Three T’s

IIn the Capital Region there are close to 1,000 registered notfor-profit organizations, and one of their largest challenges after finances, is getting their stories told. Media coverage for them is oversubscribed. Because of this, there are a multitude of great causes but not nearly enough opportunities for these organizations to reach a wide audience to share stories of the valuable work they do on a daily basis, work that enhances the community and the lives of the people who call it home. Some of these not-forprofits started from the ideas of a visionary, such as the Victoria Foundation, others by a collection of like-minded people, and some by a grant from the public or private sector. Not a single one has the same story. Victoria needs to be more aware of all the great people and unique organizations that help to make this city remarkable.

Everybody has a cause close to their heart; one in which they would be willing to be a more active participant. What’s yours?

Victoria is an incredibly fortunate community; filled with vibrant and active youth, a giving work force, and an incredible group of retired and semi-retired skilled individuals who have chosen Greater Victoria as home and a vast group of entrepreneurs of all ages. Each issue of YOUR will help raise awareness of a selected organization, connect people to their neighbours, share event information, and hopefully inspire members of the community to give one or two of their 3 T’s:

YOUR Magazine believes that right now we can help raise the awareness of such organizations, and shine a light on the philanthropic opportunities within organizations in this community.

YOUR community. The story of each not-for-profit is engaging and distinctive and these stories are all around us. YOUR magazine will encourage the reader to share with us what is or isn’t happening in your community, what the issues are on your mind and how can we help to share information and connect you better to your community.

In order to get these stories heard, not-for-profits need to find a way to connect with those who are willing to help them grow. They need people to support them through volunteering any of their 3 T’s.

Support and Sustainability In this issue, YOUR has the privilege of featuring Power To Be, another amazing organization with roots right here in Victoria.

While we hope to help raise awareness of all the unique programming and opportunities that Power To Be provides to this community we are also pleased to be able to support them with a portion of our ad revenue from this issue. YOUR’s goal is that as the magazine grows so will the opportunities to give back within the community.

A win-win; a meaningful commitment to the community paired with a collection of great untold stories six times a year.

1) TIME – Although everyone has a hectic schedule the gift of your time to an organization can be incredibly rewarding whether it is an hour a month or a day a week. This time is invaluable to an organization, as people power is often the largest cost for a not-for-profit and time is in the highest demand. Volunteering can give seniors an opportunity to be back in their community filling a meaningful role, while many students can often obtain credits in both high school and university for their time. Bottom line, your time is a gift to any not-for-profit, and you will most likely benefit just as much!

2) TREASURE – There has been much written about the financial benefits of giving treasure to a registered charity.

The monetary benefit is a tax receipt while the personal benefit can range from the great satisfaction of gifting funds anonymously and to seeing your dollars at work in your community and having ‘your name up in lights’.

Without private financial donations few organizations in your community would survive.

3) TALENT – Everyone has skills or knowledge to offer the community whether they realize it or not. Your gift of talent could range from driving seniors to appointments, serving food at one of our community shelters or food banks, writing reports, helping with strategic planning, guiding financial decisions, helping clean a local beach or park, swinging a hammer at a community housing project, or taking a seat on a board. Any one of these or other ways of donating your skills could benefit the organization and the community, while making you feel good as a contributing member; plus you never know what may happen or who you might meet.

As a kid growing up outside Toronto, Tim Cormode fell in love with the great outdoors.

is father, a pediatrician, and mother, a physiotherapist, ensured nature was an everyday occurrence through their lakeside home. They would also take the family on weekend getaways kayaking, hiking and camping far beyond the suburban sprawl to peaceful escapes.

But it wasn’t until much later, high in the Canadian Rockies near Canmore, A.B., that Cormode first conceived the idea for Power To Be, a B.C. charitable organization that provides accessible and adaptive outdoor recreation adventures for youth and families living with physical, social and mental support needs.

“At the time, adaptive recreation wasn’t a big thing in B.C. I remember thinking, ‘How cool would it be for kids with disabilities to climb their own mountain and use the great outdoors as a vehicle to create change in their lives,’” says Cormode, now a proud Victoria resident and founder and executive director of Power To Be. Since launching in 1998, Power To Be has grown exponentially while sticking to its core values of collaborative, life-affirming curriculum. With programs offered in Victoria and Vancouver, nearly 30 full-time staff provide facilitation, personalized support and equipment necessary for everything from kayaking, canoeing, hiking, climbing and camping for people of all ages, to life skill development for teens and young adults. Predominantly privately funded, the non-profit ensures neither financial restraints nor age or ability prevent people from accessing Power To Be programs.

In 2014 alone, Power To Be served more than 1,000 participants and delivered 429 programs in partnership with

more than 50 community organizations. Volunteers chipped in 5,800 hours to make those experiences reality.

“What makes us innovative is our ability to connect all our partners to make large scale social impact,” Cormode says.

“We’re trying to address three things: social isolation – which we counter through recreation and group activities; inclusion and accessibility – where 100 per cent of our programs are subsidized; and physical activity – where we help people get active in an incredible environment we want to protect.

If we’re not bringing out that next generation and making them more physically active, then we are missing something really fundamental. That’s really the essence of what we do.

Power To Be programs are delivered through two streams. Wilderness School is a three-year co-ed experience based out of Victoria for youth referred to the program by counsellors and teachers. These teens go on one weekend trip a month and longer expeditions in the summer with their cohort to build self-esteem, self-confidence and a sense of community while learning wilderness skills.

“A lot of these kids didn’t necessarily grow up with the belief that anything is possible,” Cormode says. “The thing that I always hear when they come through Wilderness School is how connected they feel to positive role models in their lives. There is a friendship that occurs in a working environment where trust and belief in themselves becomes reality.”

Past Wilderness School activities have included summiting Mt. Albert Edward, kayaking Clayoquot Sound and hiking to Cape Beale.

The other program stream, Adaptive Recreation, offers inclusive, nature-based recreation activities for people living YOUR HOLIDAY 2015 9

with physical, mental and social support needs. Activities include everything from a day in the Tofino surf for a father with a spinal cord injury to try a new activity with his daughter, to a kayaking adventure for someone with a seizure condition.

“The participants we work with are the experts in their own experience,” says Carinna Kenigsberg, Power To Be program manager. “We can outfit someone specifically to their body and their physical and emotional needs so that when they’re doing these activities all of a sudden the barriers disappear and they can just have fun and connect.”

Power To Be’s willingness to partner with local community agencies that are already delivering programs to people with support needs is part of what makes it so effective, Kenigsberg says. Rather than duplicate work, Power To Be provides the adaptive and professional know-how to give participants their nature experience in partnership with organizations such as Community Living Victoria and Canucks Autism Network.

“We look at comfort, mobility and stability, both emotionally and physically,” Kenigsberg says. “If we teach someone with a physical disability about creating a hike on Mt. Doug and showing them an accessible route, they can go back on their own or with their family and do it with confidence.”

Power To Be’s client-centered approach and ability to adapt also means it can accept participants at any age and from all backgrounds, she adds.

“Even when people find us in adulthood, there’s an ‘A-ha!’ moment where we show them that limitation doesn’t have to exist,” Kenigsberg says. “We aren’t looking at somebody with a physical challenge or mental disability and telling them ‘No.’

Q. How young is too young for a child’s first eye exam?

Indoor climbing programs allow participants to work on individual goals in a community setting. Power To Be supports climbers through a variety of equipment options, as well as verbal and visual aids.

We’re looking at them in a way that has a ‘Yes, we can’ approach.

We want to be the place where people are told ‘Yes,’ and then we figure out how to get there.”

What makes the non-profit so unique, says Cormode, is its ability to deliver life-affirming experiences for people where gaps exist in health and education services resulting from constrained family and government resources.

“There are a lot more opportunities now for families with support needs, but there’s still a long way to go in the social service and education sectors,” Cormode says. “What makes Power To Be so effective is that we’re creating an environment where people really feel included and where all our participants are part of a community.”

Cormode and his team are now looking at creating a custom-built, “world-class” facility in Greater Victoria that would move beyond outdoor recreation activities to provide children and families with a more holistic scope of services and access to connect to nature.

“In the next five years, we hope to launch a program that will create a legacy for B.C.,” Cormode says.

To realize that vision, Power To Be will need to rely on the generosity and belief of its donors, and on a large group of passionate volunteers.

“Every dollar in our organization has a significant impact,” Cormode says. “It’s first and foremost about having fun for our participants, staff, volunteers and donors. If people are interested in volunteering or donating, please get in touch with us. B.C. is a remarkable place to enjoy the outdoors. I moved here for that very reason. So if you love to surf or kayak or climb mountains and want to help people, we’d love to chat with you.”

A. In Canada the recommendation for routine optometric exams is as early as 6 months, and yearly thereafter until adulthood. After 19 the recommendation is every 2 years until age 65 when it becomes yearly again.

That being said if it is clear to a parent that something seems wrong with a newborn’s eyes, they should contact their Optometrist.

Q. Why are regular eye check ups important?

A. The eyes truly are a window to one’s own heath. It is the only place in the body that a doctor can assess a “naked” nerve (The optic nerve) and “naked” blood vessels.

Everywhere else in the body, we see blood vessels at least through the skin.

It is possible to detect diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, high cholesterol, and some forms of cancer… all by looking into someone’s eyes.

A. It’s true that some headaches can be related to eye function.

An eye exam performed by an Optometrist is great for investigative purposes, and many Family Doctors will recommend this step. Headaches are best dealt with by a detailed history. Are you dehydrated? Are you stressed?

Is your neck/back tight? Are you having any trouble with your vision? There are many potential reasons to consider.

Q. What is the difference between a sight test and an eye exam?

A. A sight test determines only the spectacle prescription. An eye exam tests the spectacle prescription but also does a comprehensive eye health examination of structure and function and a test of how the eyes work together. Only an Optometrist has the training to perform this.

Q. I heard that cataracts are common in the aging population and there are things we can do to prevent their progression… is this true?

A. Very true! Cataracts are part of the normal aging process, so everyone will get them eventually.

The best thing someone can do to prevent cataracts from happening prematurely is ultraviolet (UV) protection for the eyes. So wear your sunglasses, and a hat! Poor diet choices and smoking are other factors that can contribute to early cataract development.

It is transformational, eyeopening, exciting, wondrous and engaging for travellers of every age... Family vacations are designed to spark a passion, inspire a sense of wonder or enrich understanding – and when these experiences are shared with loved ones, they bring you closer together.

The effort involved in creating these trips does not seem to dissuade anyone.

More and more families are separated by distance these days.

Career opportunities and ease of movement means that people are often spread out in far flung places. Most of us enjoy and value spending time with family and friends. A vacation experience is a great way to achieve quality time while cooking, dishes, laundry and work distractions are removed. As many of today’s grandparents are active and still enjoy exploring the world – what better way to share it than by travel?

My own family is a good illustration of how well these get-togethers can be successful and enjoyed. We endeavour to have at least one gathering event year. And as the family grows it becomes more and more important to us.

This past summer we rented a beautiful villa in Barbados. Seeing my adult children unwind and relax around the pool was a joy. We had a short walk to the beach where we could purchase fresh fish from the fishermen as they came ashore. We took turns cooking on the grill most nights. On one occasion we hired a chef and she prepared local Bajan dishes for us – it was an amazing feast! For me one of the best parts of the trip was my three and four year-old grandchildren ‘shout whispering’ for me to come and see the monkey and roosters in the garden. It was another great holiday enjoyed by us all from the newborn baby right up to grandma and grandad.

Christmas gatherings are always important too. It can be skiing in Mt. Tremblant, an Elizabethan House in Norfolk, beaches in the Caribbean, a townhouse in Maui or a cruise in sunny warm waters.

It’s important to plan family trips well in advance. Set the dates so that everyone is prepared. Make it clear who is paying for what.

Throughout the preparation process be sure that everyone is kept up to date with schedules and itineraries. Email works really well to communicate the details. If you are using a travel consultant, they can set up a group email to keep everyone informed.

There are many companies who focus on family travel. They are specialists who organize adventures that cater to all members of the family.

A visit to London and Paris includes a trip through time, from Windsor Castle to the Tower of London. Cycle through the Royal Parks and stay stealthy on a ‘spy’ walk. Ride a double decker bus and take a spin in a private capsule on the London Eye, then a speedboat on the River Thames. Cross the English Channel on the Eurostar for more historic encounters in Paris. Step into the 17th century at the opulent Palace of Versailles, discover the Louvres’ treasures on a scavenger hunt and see street artists in Montmartre before visiting Notre Dame Cathedral, where Quasimodo gazed over Paris in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. A ‘living’ witness to history that will never be forgotten.

hen I turned 50, it was a clarifying moment, a moment in which I realized that the next 25 years were the most important in my life.

To the age of 50, I had been living life and building a career, full of moments and experiences, all to get me prepared for slowing down and enjoying my retirement. The time flew by, one year blended to the next, so seamlessly sometimes that I lost track of a few. Having watched my parents grow older and becoming responsible for their care, I became aware of what was important in regard to my health, safety and security.

We live in a different age than my parents did; now we have to be wary of different health concerns, safeguarding our finances and new threats to the security of our plan to age gracefully and comfortably.

The retirees and seniors of today have to be savvy to a growing number of crime trends, mainly around frauds and scams. Physical safety is always important, but the real threat to today’s seniors is financial crimes. Phone scams, mail scams, internet scams, they will all empty your bank account if you’re not vigilant and on your guard.

There are thousands of scams out there, and despite all the media attention and education around them, people are still falling victim. The criminals have no barriers or template to conducting their rip-offs and rackets. Young and old, male and female, they don’t discriminate; however, they do tend to target older people with a style of scam that is likely to draw the sympathy of a senior. The grandparent scam is one of these.

The simple defense to this scam is to ask the “grandchild” what their middle name is or when their birthday is. Another is befriending a senior who may be on their own and lonely, gaining their trust and then ripping them off for their life savings. The best defense is to educate yourself against these scams by reading and listening to the news and researching on the internet. If you are a senior, learn from the resources that are out there. Go to your local police department and ask for literature about frauds and scams. If you’re the family of a senior, assist them with their finances when you can and help them safeguard themselves. Maybe you have an elderly neighbor; keep an eye on them if you feel they might be vulnerable.

We all want to enjoy our golden years and be able to relax and revel in our retirement without fear and anxiety about our financial comfort. Be smart and cautious, and a bit skeptical and suspicious, when it comes to financial dealings. In future articles we will visit some of the more popular scams and schemes, but until then, if an offer or a deal seems to be disbelievingly uncomplicated and rewarding, the mantra for defending against all financial crimes is, “If it seems too good to be true, it is!”

The ocean is no exception. In this article we will journey to the deep sea. We will explore two unique environments – the abyssal plains and hydrothermal vents - characterized by intense pressure, limited food, toxic gases, harsh temperatures, and utter darkness.

Although extreme, the ecosystems are stunning and are home to thriving communities of animals.

THE ABYSSAL PLAINS are often thought of as the deserts of the ocean. The plains range from approximately 2000-6000 metres in depth, cover over 50% of the earth’s surface and form an expanse of rolling sediment covered hills dotted with seamounts and partitioned by mid-ocean ridges. Furthermore, this enduring environment experiences low velocity currents, cool temperatures (-5°C) and is well oxygenated. It was once thought that the abyssal plains were a stable, unchanging ecosystem with few organisms calling it home. Rather, the abyss is abounding with animals and microbes, resulting in immense biodiversity across the plains.

One of the most challenging feats of surviving in the deep sea is finding enough food. The majority of the food – decaying animals, detritus, and fecal pellets falls from the euphotic zone (sunlit surface waters), thousands of metres above in a process known as marine snow. These organic “crumbs” slowly sink, being consumed by animals (e.g. zooplankton, fish) along the way, leaving only a small percentage of food to reach the seafloor and be quickly scavenged. It has puzzled scientists how such little food could sustain the abundance of life in the deep sea. Recent research

by MBARI scientist, Ken Smith (et al.), shows that, “Occasionally the deep sea receives huge pulses of organic material, resulting from population booms of algae or animals at the surface. These intermittent deep sea feasts are thought to deliver the equivalent

amount of food to the abyssal plains that would typically arrive over several years or even decades with normal marine snow”.

Another rare occurrence, but exciting feast, for deep-sea species is a whale fall. When a whale carcass reaches the deep sea (i.e. isn’t eaten all along the way) is it like a smorgasbord, providing food for all sorts of creatures for dozens of years! While studying a whale fall is logistically challenging, it is known that there are a succession of animals that come to feast: 1) mobile scavengers, like sharks and hagfish, consume the whale’s soft tissues; 2) organisms begin to colonize the bones; and 3) bacteria take over, breaking down lipids within the bones and forming bacterial mats, which in turn provide nutrients for other species. The whale carcass in many ways functions as its own community or mini-ecosystem, much like a fallen and decaying tree (nursing log) in our West Coast temperate rainforest.

Along with a lack of food, the deep sea also exists in complete darkness, as no natural sunlight can penetrate to such depths. However, some light does exist from the animals themselves. Many species in the deep can produce and emit light through a chemical reaction known as bioluminescence, which occurs in their bodies. In some species, bioluminescence occurs through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria. The light produced is typically a blue-green colour and provides a means of communication, such as a signal to attract mates, a means to entice prey to come closer, or a way to scare away predators (it makes them look larger).

HYDROTHERMAL VENTS are an absolutely stunning ecosystem which form at spreading ridges. When tectonic plates, such as the Pacific Plate and the Juan De Fuca plate (off the west coast of BC), begin to spread, new sea floor crust and hydrothermal vents are formed. in 1977 near the Galapagos Islands along with dozens of never-before seen species. Hydrothermal vents are similar to geysers on land, erupting out extremely hot water that has been under pressure.

Hydrothermal vents do not only expel hot water (300 -450ºC), they can also expel minerals and toxic hydrogen sulphide gases (black smokers), and are found at great depths, meaning the pressure is high and they are in complete darkness. Despite the inhospitable conditions, these remarkable environments are teeming with life. In fact, based on fossil evidence, it has been proposed that perhaps the origin of life on planet earth began at or near these vent ecosystems.

How is it possible that tubeworms, limpets, snails, sea spiders, scale worms and other creatures could begin colonizing such a dynamic ecosystem? How can anything survive with toxic gases?

The hydrothermal vents are home to a special resident – bacteria.

The thermophiles (“heat loving”) drive the hydrothermal vent system and make it habitable for a wide variety of other creatures. On land and in the upper ocean, plants and algae create their own food using the sun’s energy through photosynthesis. At the hydrothermal vents, however, no sunlight exists. Rather, the gases coming out of the vents act as a chemical energy source for the bacteria, enabling the bacteria to make their own food through chemosynthesis. The bacteria can be free-living and eaten directly by animals like limpets; or the bacteria can form symbiotic relationships. For example, in exchange for a safe place to live – in a specialized organ called the trophosome – the bacteria will create food for its host, the tubeworm, Ridgeia piscesae.

As the heated mineral-laden fluids come out of the vent, the minerals precipitate out as they react with the cooler surrounding water. As the minerals precipitate, the vent chimney grows. Although the vents are quite fragile when touched, the chimneys can reach upwards of twenty metres in height. Life at the vents is unpredictable, as some vents last for decades and others only a year or so. As tectonic plates shift the heat source to the vents can be “turned on” or “turned off”, creating a rather ephemeral environment. Once the heat source diminishes, that particular vent community can be extinguished.

British Columbia is home to the Endeavour Ridge Hydrothermal Vents (discovered in 1982), some of the most spectacular vents in the world.

This particular vent system is also a marine protected area and only allows for scientific studies of this unique environment to continue.

Extreme environments are truly and utterly remarkable. It is amazing how diverse the planet is and how organisms have found ways to survive in the most inhospitable of places. I suspect that we could learn a thing or two from these environments that have existed for millions of years; and thus it is crucial that these ecosystems remain intact, as there is still much to be discovered.

In this bustling real estate market we are currently experiencing here in Victoria, many prospective home buyers are finding themselves competing for homes as soon they come on the market.

his is familiar territory for some, who may recall the boom our city saw in the early 2000’s, up to the market correction following the economic crisis of 2008. However, this competitive environment is back and is indeed unchartered waters for most, especially those who were not living in Victoria at the time or not in the market yet. Regardless of your familiarity with what the industry is now considering a “seller’s market”, it’s impossible to escape the fact that no one has the luxury of being able to “think about it”, like we typically see in a more balanced market.

This means that all potential home buyers are now faced with the challenge of not only finding a home that suits their needs, but they must also be ready to go after that home with all they’ve got.

So, given the greater pressure that comes with more buyers than homes for sale, how does a buyer navigate this playing field, which seems so heavily weighted in favour of the seller?

A good starting point is to sit down with your Realtor, and ensure that they understand what it is exactly that you’re wanting to achieve. This includes not only the basics, such as style of home and the desired neighbourhood, but should also include the pre-approved budget and a firm understanding of the finances available. It may sound obvious, but communication and a clear

understanding of what your goals are is an essential part of a good relationship, regardless of the type of market we are in. With this concise direction established, you and your Realtor can now work together to create a strategy, because once that new listing appears and it meets all of your criteria, the chances are that it will also be appealing to at least another buyer, so the benefit of the previously discussed planning now becomes evident. Given the pace at which the market is moving and how fast transactions are taking place, it is a best practice for most professional Realtors to ensure their client is able to present an offer in the most favorable light to the seller. This of course while adhering to the predetermined plan and also protecting the buyer’s fiduciary interests. Your Realtor will want to ensure that as much due diligence as possible is done prior to submitting an offer, and making the offer as clean as possible. This extra effort beforehand is paramount in helping your offer stand out from the others, who perhaps haven’t had the foresight and guidance to be as well prepared. In summary, given today’s “seller’s market”, a potential buyer must work closely with their Realtor to be educated, well prepared and ready to act quickly and confidently, if they are to succeed in the competitive market we are in today.

Evergreens are not just conifers and rhododendrons; with Victoria’s mild microclimates we can grow many exotics that give a tropical feel.

Many exciting exotics from around the globe with similar climates to our own, such as the Far East, South Africa, New Zealand and South America, are now available to the eager gardener. Explorations of Asia by plantsmen such as Daniel Hinkley, have brought rare and unusual plants to North America that are readily available to the garden marketplace.

FAVOURITES CURRENTLY GROWING IN MY GARDEN: DAPHNIPHYLLUM MACROPODUM A broadleaf evergreen shrub from Asia, sometimes called the “poor man’s rhodo,” is actually a large daphne; grown for its attractive glossy leaves and bright red petiole (leaf stem). In late winter new growth in shades of chartreuse and apricot put on a welcome show of colour that really catches the eye. The thick leathery leaves of the Daphniphyllum are pest resistant unlike the rhododendron; in addition the insignificant blossoms do not need deadheading.

SCHEFFLERA TAIWANIANA This is an Asian aralia from the high mountains of Taiwan, a tropical looking shrub with palmate foliage. Unlike the ubiquitous houseplant, this Schefflera is perfectly hardy for our Victoria climate. Another rare exotic introduced to North America by Dan Hinkley, Schefflera Taiwaniana created a frenzy among plant lovers around the world, not unlike the tulip mania of the 17th century. Luckily through plant science Sheffies became available in 2012 at affordable prices. Other notable Schefflera to grow is, S. Delavayi and S. Brevipedunculata.

GRISELINIA LITTORALIS VARIEGATA A modest growing New Zealand broadleaf, the unusual oval leaves are thick and waxy, mainly green and marbled with cream. The leaf structure makes it suitable to withstand salty winds. Planted closely near the waters edge, where temperatures are milder, it will create a decorative windbreak for year-round interest and is rarely bothered by insects.

ASTELIA CHATHAMIC “SILVER SPEAR” Another favourite New Zealander from the cool Chatham Island can add a strong vertical element to the winter garden. The New Zealand phormiums pale in comparison to the Astelias wide, sword-like strappy leaves. The leaves silver colouration sport a stunning metallic sheen that is reflective and icy looking.

MELIANTHUS MAJOR It’s all about the foliage with this dramatic winter growing shrub from South Africa. Large pinnate blue-green leaves are very sculptural and tropical looking and grow on stalks up to 6’-10’. The leaves have a pungent fragrance of peanuts; the unpleasant scent is a telling sign of its toxicity. If not cut back by frost, melianthus develops a curious maroon flower spikes in spring resembling a nodding turkey head vulture. Through the use of these hardy exotic broadleaf plants the garden becomes harmonious with a balance of deciduous and evergreen material giving structure, variety, and texture throughout the seasons.

Controlling our Spending

Be it ourselves, a company or a government, the temptation to spend is unceasing.

How difficult it is to resist.

“Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.” – Benjamin Franklin The needs seem insatiable and justified, but the ability to pay is usually limited or will add debt to a credit card, business loan or government borrowing.

• Buying more Christmas presents for the ones we love; • Improving a business by upgrading the computer system; • Increasing medical capacity to reduce hip replacement wait times.

Controlling such spending requires setting priorities, identifying tradeoffs and imposing self-discipline. Fortunately, it may be easier than it first seems. At a personal level, constraint without undue pain starts by knowing what we are already spending – and identifying in what areas we have choices in setting priorities. What is essential (like rent, strata fees and healthy home-cooked meals) and what is at least partially discretionary?

As David Chilton observes in his useful 2011 book The Wealthy Barber Returns, “the mere act of monitoring expenses tends to reduce spending…awareness alone leads people to be more fiscally responsible.”

A good place to start is pulling out (or looking up on-line) cheque books and debit and credit card statements over the past year. It is usually surprising to see how much we spend wining and dining out, including those caffeine fixes; on electronics and staying plugged in; clothing; personal grooming; owning/operating a car; memberships and hobbies; home improvements…. convenient tools for preparing lists of categorized discretionary expenses are Apple Numbers and EXCEL spreadsheets. More sophisticated tools are apps to monitor monthly spending and create budgets; like Mint Bills (www.mint.com/Canada) and Quicken.

To control our spending does not mean taking the joys out of life! But analyzing our spending can give some valuable insights into how we can avoid going into debt and save for even better enjoyments like raising a family, a needed vacation or a satisfying retirement.

Here are some ideas to consider: • Instead of trading in a car after three years, keep it for eight.

The used car discount is largest when you drive a new car off the lot while today’s vehicles generally require minimal servicing for eight or more years.

• Reduce Christmas, birthday, anniversary and similar gift spending from what was spent last year and put away the calculated savings towards an enhanced or extended vacation.

• Up to a comfortable security level, shop with cash rather than a debit or credit card. Studies indicate the need to count out currency tends to reduce spending and helps stay within budget limits. The enjoyable experience of shopping doesn’t require buying more than we need.

• Pack a lunch several days a week to enjoy after a brisk walk or a good read in the park.

• Parents want and need the occasional night out or afternoon adventure sans enfants yet the cost of a babysitter can make such outings too expensive. One group of friends and their co-workers decided to share such babysitting. Each couple was given 20 tokens representing one hour of babysitting to be exchanged as they spelled each other off at mutually convenient times.

Controlling our spending starts with counting what we already spend and rethinking our priorities.
