Sudoku Word Search Puzzle Answers

ello and welcome to your September issue of Your Local Lincs Magazine. At the time of writing this I am currently in the USA with Joel whilst he recuperates after his SDR surgery this summer. Joel is Karen James doing really well and you can see some photographs and a report on his progress on page 63. The weather here in St Louis is baking hot! Although I also understand this is currently the case in the UK! I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff for all their hard work putting this issue together, I have kept in contact with them but it has all been down to them. Thank you Julie, Lorna and Lauren! In the magazine this month we wish Heckington’s very own Paralympic athlete, Kieran, the best of luck as the Paralympics are underway (page 63)! Fancy yourself as a bit of a player? Go forth and volunteer at Sleaford Little Theatre where they have a range of roles to offerpage 64, or audition for the Heckington Players Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime- page 54! Have you always wanted a fabulous family portrait? Enter into our Diva Portrait Party competition on page 8 for your chance to win one worth £150! This has been a year of celebration and the year is not out yet, so why not celebrate a local gem that is in its 80th year of service- page 65? You can also celebrate this season in a way that is practical by helping out this harvest, page 34. Going back to school never got so good for the students of St George’s Academy, take a look at the £20 million development that they’ll be returning to s nc lLi ca Lo Your (page 60)! st george’s So whatever the New look following month brings, here at Your Local Lincs Magazine we hope you Help out have a superb September! this Har vest September 2012

It’s simple! Fill in the grid so that each row, column and 3x3 box, contains the numbers 1 through 9 with no repetition. You don’t need to be a genius. These puzzles use logic alone. Watch out! Sudoku is highly addictive.

The idea is that you store the word “ICE” in your mobile phone address book and against it enter the number of the person you would want to contacted in case of an emergency. In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are AND be able to contact them! It’s so simple that everyone can do it! For more than one contact name simply do ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 and so on. Do you have an ICE number in you mobile phone?

scruffy air about him, a certain nonchalance which the lady bunnies found very attractive. His fame grew and it seemed that he was required at every available warren. Then sadly one day Bertie arrived at the the surgery for cremation. What possibly could have caused his demise ? Any of the above afflictions? The Russians? A jealous rival? Not Quite. The risk in doing nothing! Don't minimise your chance of achieving your goals

Risk is a fact of life for any investor. Thanks to inflation, there's even risk in doing nothing. To earn rewards you have to assume some level of risk. If you minimise 48 risk you may also minimise your chance of achieving your goals. Risk profiling Determining the level of risk you are prepared to take is a process known as 'risk profiling'. This is essential as the more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments Call for your needs. 01529 300 300 For A Free Guide To Personal circumstances Investing For Income Of course, your personal circumstances form or an important part of the risk profiling process. Investment Planning Are you investing for income, growth or both? Your age is also important: if you are a young investor saving for a pension you may be more likely to take higher levels of risk due to the greater length of time to recover short-term losses. All types of investment carry some risk of making a loss. The main thing is to be comfortable that your investments represent, as closely as possible, a level of risk acceptable to you, and continue to do so. If you would like to read a guide to investment planning, call us on 01529 300 300 and we will email our guide to you.

ots of people are daunted by the thought of making a will. There’s many reasons for this such as concerns over fees, ridiculous and unnecessary legalese used in will documents and just the sheer distaste many feel at the idea of the grim reaper. No surprise, therefore, that two-thirds of British adults havent made a will. But even if you do not have much to leave, it’s frankly a selfish act not to make at least some very simple provision because it makes the task facing those you leave behind much more difficult and stressful. Although we are free to make a will so that, when we die, we can leave our assets to whoever we like, we are also free to die without having made a will – or intestate – so that the state decides how our estate will be divided up. The intestacy rules in England and Wales are set out in the Administration of Estates Act 1925 and have not materially changed since their creation. When someone dies without a will their assets are distributed according to the rules of intestacy. For example, where there are children, the surviving spouse or civil partner is entitled to a £250,000 legacy and chattels and a lifetime interest in half of whatever’s left the rest goes to the children. Where someone dies intestate and leaves a surviving spouse or civil partner but no children, the survivor is entitled to the statutory legacy: all the deceased’s possessions (chattels), the first £450,000 of the estate and half of whatever’s left, the rest goes to the parents or brothers and sisters if there are no parents. Consider, for example, a typical asset-rich but cash-poor couple (whether married or in a civil partnership), with two or three children. One of the couple dies, intestate. The effect of the limited statutory legacy might easily be to force the sale of the family home in order to pay out to the children. Needless to say, the intestacy rules would not help a surviving cohabitant; they would stand to get nothing. Things you should consider when making a will include: Beneficiaries - who will receive the estate? Executors - who will ensure this happens? Legacies - any special gifts of money or property? Organ donation - for transplant/treatment of others Funeral arrangements - cremation, burial, religious ceremonies, music, flowers

ecently the Prime minister made comments with regards the “morality” of tax avoidance schemes and his intention to legislate against these as quickly as possible. It is becoming increasingly difficult to judge when tax planning becomes avoidance as the government continues in its attempts to close loop holes in tax legislation. For those in business who are sole traders, or partners within partnerships, one thing which they could safely consider, to reduce current levels of taxation, would be to incorporate all or part of their business. Running your business as a limited company (by incorporating) offers a range of tax planning opportunities. The benefits are derived in the main from the additional flexibility in the forms your income can be taken, either as salary, dividends or shares. If you are in business, you could pay a non-earning spouse/partner a salary, on which you will then attract tax relief. In addition to the salary, you can pay an employer’s contribution to your partner’s personal pension plan. There is no tax or NIC on the premium itself, and it should be an allowable business expense. It is important to note however, that the total value of your partner’s salary, benefits and pension contributions must be justifiable in relation to the work carried out. Alternatively if you are a sole trader, and incorporation is not suitable for commercial reasons then you could share the profits of your business by operating as a partnership. You both need to be genuinely involved as business partners, although not necessarily as equal partners Consideration should also be given to your accounting year end date and whether this is most beneficial to you. Changing the date may release Overlap Relief that is available to you. Remember it is possible to claim up to 100% tax relief if your business invests in certain qualifying plant and equipment during the current tax year. The

n January 2013 Heckington Players will be proud to present their next pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. With Kei Bailey back to write the script especially for the Players, the production promises to be as magical, exciting and outrageously funny as ever. As usual he will put his own unique twist on this well-known story of a young lad called Jack who sells his cow for a handful of beans, and he will bring us yet another cast of colourful characters including Dame Trott, Simple Simon, Daisy the Cow and Fleshcreep the Giant’s villainous henchman. Open auditions will take place on Friday 14th September 2012 at 7.30pm in Heckington Village Hall so if you are interested in performing in the panto this year contact Kei on 07813 113230 for more details. Everyone is very welcome but Heckington Players are especially interested in hearing from young adults in their late teens and early twenties as there are a number of roles in the production for this age group.

Crash safety Another reason for the use of aluminum panels is that they absorb twice the energy in a crash as opposed to steel cars. But when looking to have such panels repaired following a collision it is paramount the vehicle is taken to a fully

equipped aluminum repair centre. Aluminum and steel do not mix. Minute filings from steel are highly corrosive to aluminum and a self contained aluminum repair booth and tooling is essential. The corrosive reaction can be likened to using the same chopping board for cooked meat after raw meat. Bacteria can spread from each process just like metal filings can set off the bimetallic corrosion process in aluminum. Niel Harmston, senior vehicle damage assessor at AW Accident Repair Centres, Sleaford, commented: “We are seeing more and more aluminum panels in vehicles every year. The preferred repair process for each has to be researched to manufacturer standards to ensure a safe and lasting repair. Aluminum also has memory in that carefully applied heat can return damaged panels back to their original form. But heated aluminum does not change colour like steel, even at its melting point, so specialised temperature indicators must be used to avoid weakening the structure.

motoring services

ith the lagging economy many people are looking for a more affordable option when it comes to choosing a car. Luckily the automotive industry is producing more cars made from aluminum which are lighter and more fuel efficient. Cars made from Aluminum accelerate faster and stop shorter. They also help to protect the environment requiring less engine power. A 10% reduction in weight, for example, can achieve at least an 8% increase in fuel efficiency. The increase in production of aluminum vehicle panels goes hand in hand with the increase in hybrid vehicles using both fuel and electricity. The battery packs are extremely heavy so using lighter weight body panels compensates the weight. Prestige manufacturers such as Land Rover, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes are racing to claim to produce the first fully aluminum constructed vehicle but many mid range manufacturers already use aluminum panels prolifically. The Peugeot 407 bonnet, BMW 3, 5 & 7 series bonnets and doors, and the Nissan Altima bonnet, for example, are all made from aluminum.

Community News £20 million spent on developments at St. Georges Academy.

t. George’s Academy is a mixed student secondary school for 11-18s, serving the town of Sleaford and the surrounding areas. The Academy has a site in Sleaford with a smaller site at Ruskington. This year the Sleaford site has had a major overhaul! £20 million has been spent on the buildings to equip the school for the future. £3 million has been spent on computers and other new technology to prepare students for the rapidly changing technological world out there! The final touches to the new building were completed over the summer holiday. When the children return on September 5th they will enjoy the brand new facilities. Although the date is not announced yet the school are planning an open day towards the end of September so that parents and local people can view the new premises at their leisure. Contact school direct on 01529 302487 for the date. It may also be worth checking the Academy’s website as it may feature in the school calendar listing found on

Mr Watson, principal, has paid credit to the children praising them for being wonderfully well behaved during the whole building process. He is reported to have said “We have not had one incident or accident of any kind.” This is wonderful to hear and a credit to the children and organisation of the building company. Mr Watson goes onto say “We lost almost half of the site at the height of the building works and have managed with restricted dining facilities … I hope that as parents see the new facilities they will realise that is has all been worth it. The new hall and dining facilities are amazing and the new sixth form facilities are fabulous.” Mr Watson also thanks the staff as well as parents and students for “unstinting support”. So what now? With all these developments tucked away nicely you might think that the Academy will be taking a well-earned rest from planning any more changes! Far from it, St. Georges are now planning their next phase of development which will centre on a new swimming pool complex for the students.

nternationally acclaimed virtuoso string quartet ‘Bowjangles’ are appearing at the Reading Rooms, in Ewerby on Friday 21st September at 7:30pm. The company is made up of classically trained musicians - Music, classy vocals, hilarious comedy and energetic dancing all come together to make a stunning show. This hugely enjoyable show will include the absolute antidote to the Olympic games; their take on this year’s sporting activity…..The company will present “The Bowjangles Games” with boxing and gymnastics whilst playing a variety of stringed instruments!! The reading rooms at Ewerby are on the Main street of Ewerby. The name derived from the Dowager Duchess of Winchelsea who erected the premises and provided reading matter for the estate workers at Halverhome, many years ago, to ‘improve their minds’. Eventually the building was transferred to the villagers ‘in trust’ to be used as the village hall . The ‘trust’ document requires the committee to represent all the various groups and

users in the village. Recently the facilities were upgraded by providing toilets for the disabled. This was funded by the big lottery fund and the Bernard Sunley Charitable foundation. The hall is available for hire at reasonable rates and licensed bar can be provided for an event if needed. The committee aim to present a varied diet of musical and other events each year for the benefit of the local and surrounding area. Bowjangles are the first event for this new season. Fiona White, committee chairwoman, says “We are extremely fortunate to have been able to book Bojangles for one night at Ewerby. We can promise a fabulous evening of music and fun from a group of highly talented musicians”. Licensed bar will be open from 7pm till midnight. Tickets £8 per adult £5 per child – To book tickets telephone Irene Austen on 01529 461074. Please visit

Unprecedented Musical Extravaganza at Ewerby!

012 is the year that the Paralympics come home to Britain and The National Centre for Craft & Design, formally known locally as ‘The Hub’ are celebrating this with a summer exhibition looking at how enabling design has transformed disability with an exhibition called ‘Transformers’. The N.C.C.D. sits at the heart of Sleaford at the beautiful riverside setting of Navigation Wharf. It is a unique and ambitious gallery that exhibits the most innovative, challenging and accomplished craft and design artists of today. ‘Transformers’ on display till 30th September will look at the brains behind some of these designs and innovations and at the people who use them. In the face of adversities the human race has an uncanny ability to survive, repair, learn and improve. Divided into six sections and featuring over 60 objects, films and still photography, the exhibition will explore different aspects of how design and invention is used to overcome disability. Made to Measure charts the developments from the early forerunners of modern prosthetics to the most up to date engineering. Domestic Science looks at innovative design supporting everyday domestic tasks and activities such as mobility aids and crockery that is easy to use and delightful to own. Their quirky T, U and I canes will raise a smile as well as reminding us about what products await us when we get old! Tools of the Trade explores disability as both cultural and ideological, requiring individual, community and large-scale social change within the workplace. This Sporting Life considers sporting activity from the grassroots to elite level and visitors will have the opportunity to see the Ossur Cheetah running blade. Keeping Up Appearances looks at the changing public perception of disabilities and how major brands have used disability as a positive brand message. We are Robots examines the designs used to adapt the human body to interface with machines – cyborgs and robotics and will feature ‘The Eyeborg Film’. Are cyborgs only just around the corner? Visit this exhibition for free! Open from 10am to 5pm every day in September.

his year the St. Botolph’s Community Centre on Grantham Road, Sleaford is celebrating its 80th Birthday, an impressive milestone. On the weekend of 6th & 7th October the 80th anniversary celebrations will begin with some exciting events and the committee would love to have a display showing how the hall has been used over the years. The centre’s committee would welcome any memories readers may have of the hall over the past 80 years. Were there celebrations for VE day held at the centre? Did you attend a party for the Coronation? Have you used the hall to mark a significant birthday or Anniversary? One of the 80th birthday celebrations is an Antiques Road Show on Saturday 6th from 10am to 12.30pm, where you can go and get your treasures valued by Golding, Young & Thos. Mawer who are Chartered Auctioneers of Grantham. If you do have any photographs or memories then please send them to us here at Your Local Lincs via email or in person and we will gladly pass them on to the centre’s committee.

Make a difference to your community! Free Training to all who live or work in Lincolnshire no qualification required! Anyone can have thoughts of suicide! Everyone can learn to help! Suicide is a much bigger problem than we realise due to its stigma and taboo. Statistics tell us that about 1 in every 110 die by suicide and of those between 15 & 24yrs of age 1 in 9 die by suicide. In 2010 over 5000 deaths in the UK were due to suicide compared to less than 2000 by death on the road! We need to start to make a difference in our community and YOU can help! By attending the 2 day Applied Suicide Interventions Skills Training Course (ASIST) you will learn how to: • Spot the signs that someone may be having thoughts of suicide. • Have confidence not to miss, dismiss or avoid these signs. • Be ready, willing and able to apply ‘suicide first aid’. • Keep the person safe by creating a safeplan. • Connect them to other resources.
