ello and welcome to the April issue of Your Local Lincs magazine. This month is another busy one for events, with Easter happening at the beginning of the month and St George’s Day on April 23rd. Here in Sleaford, the Town Council have organised a St George’s Day of celebration on Saturday 21st April, with events and activities taking place around the Market Square. See page 56 for full details. There is a lovely Easter message from Revd. Chris Bowater also on page 56. If you fancy a meal out, enter this month’s great competition on page 10 to win a voucher for £50 towards a meal at The George Hotel in Leadenham. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank people for their support in helping us fundraise for Joel my son; we have held our first events which have gone well and over the next few months there are plenty of ways to become involved or attend one the events. Events include a “Where’s Wally” 3K family fun run on Sunday April 15th, A Reptile Live Road Show on April 11th, Zumbathon on April 29th and 70’s night and Jubilee celebrations. See pages 39 and 58-59 for full details. There are also many people who doing sponsored events YourLocalLincs are for Joel and you can sponsor St N them or make a donation George’s WI via Day joelsquest. Thank you all for your help and for taking Joel into your hearts, we are very grateful. Sleaford Have a great month! History April 2012

The Perfect Plant!

s a plantsman, I often get asked to recommend the perfect plant. Now I know the conversation is going to be interesting when I am approached with the phrase “do you know anything about plants?” This phrase is usually accompanied with a quizzical scowl, and completed with raised eyebrows. “Now, we want it to flower for 12 months of the year, produce scent in winter (but not too heavy), be available in purple, blue and white, with a splash of pink around mother’s day. It must be evergreen, fast growing, tall enough to block out the view of the neighbour’s garage, but not large enough to block out light. It should be able to grow in our heavy clay soil, not require feeding and will never need pruning. It should absolutely not shed leaves onto my husband’s impeccably manicured lawn, and must be able to withstand rabbits, provide a home for birds and ladybirds, but not be susceptible to diseases or pests. The flowers should be self-deadheading, and should provide sweet nectar for bees, but not wasps. Oh, and it must be 2 metres tall when planted, and not be expensive. Can you recommend a few?” This could be an April fool, but it’s not: it’s a common request. They want me to give them a long Latin name (the plant, not the enquirer!) but it doesn’t exist, and I’m rather glad. Plants are like friends, they all have different personalities, different requirements and different strengths and weaknesses, but it’s that very variety which makes gardening (and friendship) so rewarding. April is a very busy month for most people in the garden, and one of my favourites. The clocks have changed, the days are longer and warmer and plant growth is rapid. There are still some major tasks

All makes and models of horticultural and garden machinery sharpened, serviced and repaired We have a “ring before you bring” policy

which can be completed at this time of year, such as cutting back evergreens. Cut back hard, feed and the plant will regenerate over the next few years. If you didn’t feed your plants last month, now is the time to do it. If you are an organic gardener, a handful of chicken manure pellets or blood, fish and bone, are great tonics for your plants. It’s also the time when potatoes can be planted. Some years ago, a very helpful guy at our local garden centre demystified the whole potato planting schedule for me and in essence all potatoes are planted right now- traditionally Easter Sunday I think. The first earlies, second earlies and main crop tubers are planted together; it’s just that they are harvested at different times. The instructions on the packs are usually pretty clear. Other jobs to do this month include: • Deadhead faded flowers from bulbs • After flowering, prune back Forsythia shrubs • Prune Buddleia, Lavatera and hardy Fuchsias Happy gardening!

till on the subject of speed from last month, a case came to mind which was a perfect example of cat and car collison..... As we all know cats love to dodge traffic, get chased by dogs and if problems ensue in these departments, their first instincts, being independent little creatures, is to crawl away and hide under a shrub until they feel better and ready to face the world. Mr Johnson (the cat) was found in just this position by one of our clients, who sensibly realised that her pet would need more help than a good nights sleep. A phone call to the surgery by Mr J’s mum prepared us for his arrival, and we cautioned her to limit the movement of the cat to hopefully avoid further injury. Mr Johnson arrived and was assessed to see how life threatening his condition was......Airway clear, Breathing fine, Circulation all in order. After a thorough physical examination and a few photos later it turned out that Mr J had a fractured pelvis. Sometimes these orthopedic operations can be an involved and difficult process but Mr J was a tough old puss and got through the whole procedure with a minimum of nuts and bolts and screws! Cage care and the tender touch of a good nurse always helps and it wasn’t long before Mr J was padding around somewhat tentatively at first ! Such a good result for all of us and a few strong words to Mr Johnson on leaving the clinic on his final visit..........At 5 kilos avoid anything that weighs a ton, has exhaust pipes and roars loudly !

Making your savings grow and being able to retire when and how you want to is likely to be one of your most important financial objectives, but achieving this goal requires planning and perseverance.

A Pressing Issue

roning is one of those tasks that we’re never really taught, we’re just kind of expected to pick up an iron and get on with it. But there’s actually a skill to getting it right so I embarked on a spot of research to help us get the best results from our exertions. There are some ironing basics that most experts agree on. First, it’s easier to iron most items if they are still damp. Second, some dark-coloured, synthetic or wool garments should be ironed inside out to avoid creating ‘shine’ marks. Third, always check the label to select the best temperature for the fabric and iron items that require a cooler setting first. When ironing a shirt, begin with the collar, followed by the yoke, then the cuffs, sleeves and finally the front and back. Iron between the buttons rather than over them, and use the seam as a guide on the sleeves to ensure a nice crisp finish.

If the thought of tackling your own ironing pile fills you with dread, even with the best technology on offer, there are companies around that will actually do it for you! Oh the joy…for a small fee someone will iron out your laundry problems when you’re feeling hard-pressed to do it yourself (all puns intended)! Now where did I put their number? With trousers, iron the inside of the pockets flat before laying out the trousers with both legs on top of each other and all four seams lined up. Iron one leg at a time starting from the pockets by flipping the top leg back and ironing the inside of the bottom leg in small circular motions to avoid stretching the fabric. Then fold the top leg down and iron it on the outside. Next, turn the trousers over and repeat. To create a crease, spray the trousers through a thin cloth with a solution of water and white vinegar in equal parts, then press until the cloth is dry. For best results on wool trousers, always use a damp cloth to avoid shine marks.

idea becomes law it could significantly affect lossmaking businesses that are not conducted through a company. Corporation Tax The small profits corporation tax rate remains the same at 20% for the year from 1 April 2012. However the main rate for large companies is reducing from 26% to 24% and will be 22% by the year from 1 April 2014. Capital Allowances For 2012/13 the main pool rate is reducing from 20% to 18%, and the special pool rate from 10% to 8%. The Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) Limit is also reducing from £100,000 to £25,000. VAT There are no changes to the rates of VAT. The registration threshold has increased from turnover of £73,000 to £77,000 from 1 April 2012. imon Moss comments on the main taxation measures announced in the budget on 21 March 2012. Personal Allowances The big news for individuals is that the personal allowance will increase to £9,205 from 6 April 2013, so you have to wait another year for that extra tax-free income. The personal allowance has already been increased by £630 from 6 April 2012 to £8,105. For older taxpayers age-related allowances, which are currently given when the taxpayer reaches age 65 are to be withdrawn for those reaching 65 from April 2013. The existing age allowances given to people born before 6 April 1948, will be frozen at current rates. Income Tax Rates The tax rates for 2012/13 have not been changed from those applicable in 2011/12, but the threshold at which the 40% tax rate is applied is reduced to £34,370. Rates for 2013/14 There was much speculation before the Budget about the removal of the 50% rate that applies to taxable income above £150,000. This 50% additional rate remains in place for 2012/13, but will be reduced to 45% from 6 April 2013. Child Benefit Another area of speculation was the withdrawal of child benefit from families where at least one parent pays tax at 40% or higher. The Chancellor listened to reason and has decided to taper the withdrawal of child benefit where the higher earner’s net income (after losses but before allowances), exceeds £50,000. For every £100 of income over £50,000, a tax charge will apply equivalent to 1% of the child benefit received by the family. This will lead to the complete withdrawal of child benefit at £60,000 of net income. This tax charge is to apply from 1 January 2013, and will be collected through PAYE and selfassessment from the higher earning partner in the family. Cap on Tax Reliefs The Chancellor wants to deal with wealthy individuals who take advantage of tax reliefs that have no annual limits, such as relief for trading losses, charitable donations, and capital allowances. He is proposing that from April 2013 all such tax reliefs will be capped at the greater of £50,000 per year or 25% of the taxpayer’s gross income. If this

‘executors’ of your will - the people who carry out the administration of your will after your death. These could be friends or family members, or a professional. Make sure you ask your executors whether they are happy to take on this duty as there are long-term responsibilities involved, particularly if you include a trust in your will. It is a good idea to ask someone younger than you are. Signing the will Once the will has been drawn up it is not effective until it has been signed. There are several rules affecting the signature process which, if not followed correctly, will make your will invalid. Where to keep the will It is important to keep your will in a safe place and tell your executors or a close friend or relative where it is. Keeping your will up to date You should review your will at least every 3 years and after any major life change such as getting separated, married or divorced, having a child or moving house. It is best to deal with any major changes by getting a new will drawn up. But it is also possible to make minor changes (or ‘codicils’) to your existing will. f you care about what happens to your property after you die, you should make a will. Without one, the State directs who inherits, so your friends, favourite charities and relatives may get nothing. It is particularly important to make a will if you are not married or are not in a registered civil partnership (a legal arrangement that gives same-sex partners the same status as a married couple). This is because the law does not automatically recognise cohabitants (partners who live together) as having the same rights as husbands, wives and civil partners. As a result, even if you’ve lived together for many years, your cohabitant may be left with nothing if you have not made a will. A will is also vital if you have children or dependants who may not be able to care for themselves. Without a will there could be uncertainty about who will look after or provide for them if you die. Once you have had a will drawn up, some changes to your circumstances - for example, marriage, civil partnership, separation, divorce or if your civil partnership is dissolved (legally ended) - can make all or part of that will invalid or inadequate. This means that you must review your will regularly, to reflect any major life changes. To draft your will I would need the following information from you: What you own Details of everything you own, including property, cars, personal valuables, stocks and shares, bank accounts, insurance policies, any businesses you own, and pensions. Who gets what? Who do you want to leave these assets to? How do you want to divide your property between your loved ones, friends or charities? Are there any conditions you want to attach to these gifts (for example that young people must reach a particular age before they are paid money you have left them)? Do you want to leave money to charity? Family and other beneficiaries Details of your family and status. Are you divorced or has your civil partnership been dissolved? Have you remarried or entered into a new civil partnership? Or are you living with someone without being married to them or being their civil partner? Do you have any children or any other dependants? Guardians If you have any children that may still be under 18 when you die, you may need to name someone as their legal guardian. Other wishes Do you have any particular wishes for your funeral? Do you want to be buried or cremated? Are there any other instructions? For example, if you want to be an organ donor this can be included in your will. However, it is also a good idea to record your wishes on the organ-donor register, or to carry an organ-donor card. Executors of your will You must also name the people you want to appoint as

Tomb time at Heckington Players

eckington Players are well under way with rehearsals for their spring production, ‘Prepare to Meet Thy Tomb’; a comedy-thriller by Norman Robbins. This play follows ‘Tomb With a View’ & ‘Tiptoe Through the Tombstones’ to complete the trilogy of plays about the family that play together & slay together: the murderous Tombs. As night falls and fog descends on Monument House Hotel & Alternative Spa, Hecuba Tomb and her niece Drusilla receive a series of unexpected visitors who are soon snooping around the secret passages of the creepy old mansion and asking too many questions for comfort. Sure enough, one by one they fall victim to violent deaths by devious techniques… This irresistible combination of spoof and baffling murder mystery, over-the-top characters and shocking plot twists will thrill and delight in equal measure. Performances are Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th May, starting at 7.30pm in Heckington Village Hall. Tickets are on sale now, priced at £6 each, from Jo on 01529 469140.

Good News of Easter

’m a child of the swinging sixties. In 1964/65 I was a nerdy student at the Royal College of Music London, musing over Mozart, battling with Beethoven and grappling with the intricacies of JSBach. At the same time, in a world outside of my Classical confinement, rock-war was taking place between the smooth, sensuous and distinctive melodies of the Beatles and the raw and raunchy sounds and lyrics of the Rolling Stones. ‘A hard days night’ was pitched against ‘Satisfaction’. I confess to being more of a Beatles man. The stones were openly rebellious and often overtly offensive. The Beatles had a ‘lads-next-door’ image; fun loving and more approachable. Oh, and so to Easter! On the ‘hardest-day-night’ in human history, over two thousand years ago, the pure love of God was shown in the offering of His only Son, Jesus, who died to take away the sins of the world. This is the message of the cross. Death however did not have the final word. That was Friday, but ‘Sunday is-a-coming! Now, Jesus is alive! ‘He rolled the stone away!’ Jesus escaped the fearful clutches of the grave. And I believe it. Let the earth rejoice. Christ is risen! Death has been conquered! Guess that makes me a ‘rolling stones’ man, after all! Have an amazing Easter.
