Italian Style Customized for You
he kitchen is the most functional room in the house, but that doesn’t mean that its design has to be dry and conventional.
With a custom kitchen, the sky — or at least the roof — is the limit. Based in the Marche region of Italy, high-end manufacturer Munda Cucine produces 100 percent customized wares, with any size, material, color or veneer, from olive wood to high-gloss lacquer, all produced by smaller workshops of highly skilled craftsmen. “That versatility is a boon for the homeowner with vision”, says Vern Swart technical director at Cucine Ricci, which carries the Munda Cucine products. “When you’re working with a catalog you’re limited to what’s already been made, 10 | Your Home Magazine
with limited finish options and specific, standardized sizes that will have to work in your existing space,” says Vern Swart. “With this kind of product, you can let your imagination run wild and create a kitchen unique to your tastes and needs.” And if your tastes run to contemporary, there’s really no reason to not go Italian. There’s a reason this little country has a reputation for leading the way in international design. No rules are left unbroken, and form meets function in clever and sometimes surprising ways. Think of Italian cabinetry as the latest model Ferrari as compared to an American Buick. Both will do the job of getting the driver from point A to point B but the former will deliver them in high style, with greater speed and efficiency.
“What makes Italian design unique is that it’s sleek, and not crowded or busy and very, very smart. With these cabinets you can get all of the latest and greatest in functionality,” says Swart. That includes easy to use, space-saving mechanisms and rollouts. A single cabinet front rolls out to reveal a series of inner rollout shelves; doors can be recessed vertically, pulled up and out, or folded on hinges for a neat opening and closure. Even those clients who come in with very specific ideas of what they want in a kitchen are often surprised by the degree
of customization that’s possible, Swart says. “We can move plumbing and gas lines around — the oven doesn’t have to be in the corner and the ceiling doesn’t have to be the same height it’s always been. We can bump out or incorporate a morning bar. There’s truly a solution for every problem.” Whole appliances can be shut away — not just by matching panels but by closed doors. Integrated linear handles (or no visible handles!) maintain a uniform appearance between the kitchen elements, so that a refrigerator blends in with a pantry that blends in with a double-decker set of cabinets. Sliding doors can hide a “cleaning zone” with sink and dishwasher, or Your Home Magazine | 11
a “cooking zone,” with ovens and shelving to store bakeware. A built-in coffee unit saves counter space from its perch on the wall, surrounded by kitchen tile. With an emphasis on space efficiency, there’s that much more room for whimsy: Double wall ovens can coexist side by side, or an oven and cooktop can emerge as an unexpected popout from a recessed wall. Countertops can be built from stacked slabs of slate, for a brick-like effect. Stainless steel hood units can be personalized with a cloak of wood. An 12 | Your Home Magazine
impossibly thin high-gloss countertop extends to a table-like breakfast bar. Colors are as bold as the homeowner dares — hot pink, eggshell blue, goldenrod yellow. Or they can be minimal and unassuming: black, white, dove gray accented with warm olive wood, a flame-treated iron with a delicate patina. All of these options mean that a Munda Cucina kitchen might seem very expensive, but Swart says there’s enough
elasticity in the design process that he can accommodate budgets between $20,000 and $150,000, depending on how dramatic the goals are. Either way, his goal to get his clients thinking outside of the box, away from whatever they’ve seen before. “They might come to me with a picture, but I want them to go beyond what’s already been done. That’s when I will say, ‘Let’s look at

Retractable Screens Visibly Better
liding door screens serve a distinct purpose, but no one can ever say that they’re particularly beautiful to look at. In fact, they often obscure an otherwise lovely view. But for decades, homeowners have accepted them as an unfortunate fact, gamely allowing intrusive mesh to stand in the way of their garden, pool or patio vista.
trade show in Vancouver, that they devoted themselves to getting the product into homeowners’ hands—and has since grown to sales across North America and internationally. (The company also makes Serene and Prestige retractable window screens as well as solutions for patios, porches and other large spaces.)
This is the inspiration for Phantom Screens, a British Columbia-based company that manufactures retractable screen products with natural ventilation but optimal visibility. The family-owned business was started out of a one-car garage in 1992—the Rooke family was reportedly so impressed by the Dutch-imported retractable screen they viewed at a home
The spring-loaded, pull-across screens are available for single, double, sliding and French doors. They offer homeowners multiple advantages, the primary of which is aesthetic. Because they slide out of sight, they are the next best thing to not having screens at all. When not in use, the screens can be completely hidden in their protective housing. Three types of mesh (insect, solar or privacy screen) in multiple colors and weaves, as well as eight housing unit colors (plus customizable options) mean that the product can be adapted for a wide array of home designs and specific climate needs—choices not available for conventional screens. “Depending on where you live and what insects are indigenous to the region, you might need a smaller or larger mesh,” says Kristina Kanakin, Phantom Screens’ marketing communications specialist. Tracks can also be painted to match. At the same time, the screens serve all of the same important functions as their conventional counterparts, keeping insects out and/or enhancing privacy. The screens can also help with energy efficiency—finely wrought mesh reduces exposure to UV rays and keeps temperatures cooler in the spaces where screens are installed, reducing energy usage and bills.
Phantom screens can be motorized and integrated with home automation systems that allow the homeowner to remotely control their use during the day. “For instance, if you go to work you can program the screen to be set in place to keep the porch cool during the hottest hours of the day, so that when you come home it will be a comfortable temperature,” Kinakin says. Sensors enable the screens to lower and retract according to a set threshold for light and wind conditions. The screen track and motor housing can be recessed to keep the look sleek, and the motors enable them to be used in hard-to-reach heights, such as upperfloor picture windows. So far, the most popular product is the French door screens. “People have struggled for a long time to find a solution for their French doors, because the typical retractable screen does not work on those frames. making our door screens we realized right away that we could create something to fulfill this need,” says Kinakin. Homeowners have been so happy with the discreet screens that many have started to apply them to their yachts and high-end mobile homes. Phantom Screens are available through authorized dealers across North America. Dealers provide the design and install service from beginning to end. A representative will visit the home to measure the areas to be covered, then will bring back the ordered product and set it in place. (Some dealers maintain 16 | Your Home Magazine

Visible screens may soon be a thing of the past, as Phantom Screens become more widely adapted. The uptick in their popularity in recent years may have something to do with the rising interest in the three-season room as a way to expand the square footage of the home, Kinakin says. “As people become more interested in outdoor living spaces they are trying to make them as comfortable as possible. Tapping the Power of Taupe
ersatile taupe is everywhere. You can find it as tiny flecks in natural stone or as sinuous veins snaking through creamy marble. From smooth finishes to nubby textures, taupe is a stylish neutral with the potential to pack a powerful design punch when properly paired. That is a lot to expect from a color that originally referred only to the hue of the French mole (yes, as in the furry little creature with beady eyes and long whiskers). Or from one that is commonly described with an “-ish” (as in brownish gray or grayish brown). The name expanded beginning in the 1940s 18 | Your Home Magazine
to encompass a wide range of varying shades and even today is considered a vague term. Black is black, but taupe is…. With its amazing chameleon-like personality, taupe can take on many roles in your decorating scheme. By turns, it can be dramatic when trimmed with crisp white; classic when accented by navy; sophisticated when paired with deep teal; or feminine when used as a background for pinks. Soft blues and creams create a restful atmosphere when combined with a light shade of taupe. The color combination

is a favorite for bedrooms and works particularly well with traditional furnishings, detailed architectural elements and elegant accessories. In “public” rooms (living rooms, dining rooms, great rooms) a casual tone can be set by combining taupe with warm peach, terracotta or watermelon. Kitchens warm up to taupe, with cabinetry finishes, tile work and flooring choices highlighting the color’s appearances in natural materials. Fixtures of stainless steel, bronze, copper and chrome all fit nicely in a taupe kitchen scheme. Bright citrus colors add punch.

Taupe can look fresh and light in a bath or powder room with white tile and fixtures; or rich and deep if natural stone and wood are used for shower walls, floors and tub surrounds. Wherever you choose to use taupe, you have at your fingertips a powerful color.
Tips for painting with taupe Like every color, taupe has a temperature, running to cool or warm depending on its undertones. In addition to taking its temperature, consider the light in the room if you are planning to paint with taupe, especially the direction of your window exposure. East-facing windows typically get a lot of light in the morning so the sunlight will be warm and yellowy before noon. West-facing windows cast a warm orangey-red glow after noon, and south-facing windows have a warm orangey-yellow light all
day. North-facing windows have no direct sunlight, resulting in a cool bluish light all day. So, a warm taupe can look great in an east-facing window and rather green in a north-facing window or under fluorescent light. Always check a color in the morning, afternoon and at night before committing to live with it. Get extra copies of each paint chip you are considering and tape each of them to each wall.

QUESTION: How do I know what my design style is? ANSWER: That is a question I get often, perhaps because people want to name the style they like and because once there is a name to their style, they can go shopping and ask for furnishings that are in that style. But the reality is, you don’t need to have a specific style to make your home look good. You do know what you like and what you don’t like, so follow that instinct. What you like is your personal design style. It doesn’t have a name. You really shouldn’t try to fit your decorating into a style anyway unless you are going for traditional period furnishings. The most beautiful rooms don’t have a specific style but instead have a character that emits the personality of the owner. Make your room feel as though it has been collected through time. In other words, don’t buy a complete set of anything. Instead, select one item that you love – say a sofa – then surround it with chairs and tables, or a love seat, that compliment it but aren’t the exact match. The tables in that room shouldn’t come from the same set either. They too should be selected individually to compliment and blend with each other. You can always mix something old with something new for personality and character. QUESTION: What is stained glass and how is it colored?

ANSWER: The technique probably came from jewelry making, and mosaics. Stained glass windows as we know them, seemed to arise when substantial church building began way back when. By the 10th century, depictions of Christ and biblical scenes were found in French and German churches and decorative designs found in England. Color is the desirability of stained glass. Originally, people who worked with glass had no control over its color. Then, through accident and experimentation glass makers learned that adding certain substances to the glass melt would produce spectacular colors in the finished product. Other substances were discovered that, when added to the melt, would remove color from the finished project. Ah, the beginning of art in glass. It was the Egyptians and the Romans who are considered the first to use this art and both became expert at the production of colored glass. The recipe for producing colored glass usually involves adding metal to the glass. This is often accomplished by adding some powdered oxide, sulfide or other compound of that metal to the glass while it is molten.

Kleener, Ecover Dishwashing Liquid and Martha Stewart Clean Wood Floor Cleaner. When in doubt, though, stick with the agents Mother Nature’s already provided — and remember that a little elbow grease never hurt anyone.
While there are any number of products touted as environmentally friendly on supermarket shelves today (many of which are misleadingly labeled), the gold standard for reliably safe cleaners are those made from simple ingredients that most people already have in their household, thus reducing the need for excess packaging and fuel usage for transport. What’s more, these staples are far more affordable than cleansers marketed to the eco-minded consumer, which typically charge a premium. Baking soda wins the award for the all-around multitasker. Baking soda dissolved into a paste with ordinary water can be used to scour tile, kitchen counters, floors and the interior of an oven (for the latter, coat and leave the mixture on overnight). Plain baking soda and cornstarch can be sprinkled on the rug before vacuuming to deodorize the fibers. The texture of kosher salt works perfectly as a scrub, helping to break down thick stains. Toothpaste works wonders on tarnished silver. And forget bleach—yellowed fabrics can be brightened by that old standby the sun. The natural acids in lemon juice and vinegar are great at breaking down mildew, while white vinegar can freshen up a wood floor. And for dirty windows, the most reliable trick in the book is white vinegar mixed with water (2 tablespoons: gallon) and scrubbed with newspaper. (You get extra “green” points for recycling.) When purchasing off-the-shelf products, read the labels carefully. Cleaners that appear to be nontoxic or biodegradable can still contain hazardous compounds, as there are no major regulatory requirements to list all ingredients. Cross-reference your selections with the Environmental Working Group database, an excellent resource compiled by a nonprofit organization. Second Time Around
ith an eye for longevity and a concern for sustainability some homeowners are turning to reclaimed woods to, ahem, spruce up their living space. Typically reclaimed or recovered wood is sourced from old barns and buildings but some of it comes from the bottom of rivers where logging rafts dropped their cargo on the way to processing mills in the late 1800s and early 1900s. After a drying process the “sinker” wood is ready to be used for a number of applications. The visual appeal of reclaimed wood is obvious — it has an antique-y fine grain and pattern wrought from slow maturity in dense forests. “It retains a great coloration, almost a patina on the surface, because the wood has been absorbing the minerals of the water for a hundred or more years,” says Patricia Estes, owner of Estes Recovered Lumber. Estes’ company specializes in oldgrowth cypress, antique heart pine and pecky cypress, which has a “wormhole” look especially attractive to homeowners. Reclaimed wood is especially beautiful when used in architectural elements such as walls, ceiling beams, stairs, guttering and corbels. Its softness makes for ideal flooring in well-traveled rooms like the kitchen, and its surface is resistant to spills.

Furniture, too, benefits from its immense character and warmth — everything from headboards and tables to bathroom vanities and kitchen cabinetry and countertops. A little goes a long way — a reclaimed-wood accent wall or mantelpiece can be a show-stopping addition to a room. Versatile yet sophisticated, this material augments traditional or modern, rustic or sleek designs by adding texture and depth, its weathered surface evoking a rich sense of history. Of course, reclaimed wood is also an excellent alternative to new lumber, the production of which contributes to deforestation — and much of America’s old-growth forests have already been depleted. Because of its coloration, reclaimed wood often needs no stain. “Recovered wood is now a commodity because there’s only so much of it to go around, especially because it’s so popular right now,” Estes says. “Luckily, this stuff lasts forever — it’s so much better than what you would find today.”

Apple Cider-Pomegranate Sorbet & Apple Sangria With apple season in full swing up North, why not take advantage of some deals on apples at your local supermarket or produce stand to create these two apple recipes that recognize it is still plenty warm here in Southwest Florida and offer cool refreshment.
Apple Cider-Pomegranate Sorbet Yield: 6 servings Ingredients: 2 cups fresh apple cider 1 1/4 cup pomegranate juice 2/3 cup granulated sugar 1 cinnamon stick Pinch salt 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
Directions: In a medium saucepan over high heat, stir together the juices, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Boil for 5 minutes, then transfer to a large bowl, stir in lemon juice, cover and chill in refrigerator (with the cinnamon stick) until cold. Freeze the mixture in an ice-cream maker according to manufacturerâ€™s instructions. For a firmer texture, transfer to an airtight container and freeze an additional 2 hours.

Apple Sangria This Apple Sangria is a great way to incorporate fresh fruit into a fun cocktail. For a healthier (or kid-friendly) twist, try the mock version.
Yield: 8, 8-ounce or 10, 6-ounce servings
Directions: 1. Stir together calvados and brown in large pitcher until brown sugar is dissolved.
Stir in apple juice, apple, strawberries, and grapes. If desired, cover and refrigerate
1/4 cup calvados (apple brandy)
for up to 2 hours.
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar 5 cups apple juice or cider, chilled
2. Just before serving, add sparkling wine; gently stir. Pour over ice into glasses.
1 medium crisp apple (such as Crispin) cored
Mock Fresh Apple Sangria: Prepare sangria as directed above, except omit the calvados
and cut into thin wedges
