Lose weight the Dukan way!
The Dukan Diet is a phenomenally successful diet programme which can help you to lose weight – and keep it off! Dr Pierre Dukan, backed by 35 years of experience in nutrition, is a world-renowned expert in weight loss. Upon realising that nearly all dieters regained what they’d initially lost while dieting, Pierre invented a long-term weight-loss plan with lasting effects. Built around four phases, the Dukan Diet’s last two phases are what make it truly revolutionary. Weight loss is first consolidated, then stabilised. The Dukan Diet book has been read by 24 million readers worldwide and reached number one in the best sellers list. Now, you can buy specially formulated foods and supplements to support the diet plan.
Food flavourings Discovered over the last five years, these Dukan food flavourings are an invaluable help to anyone on a restricted diet. Simply add a few drops to low calorie pancakes, ice cream or yoghurt to enhance the flavour without adding calories. Do not exceed 1% of the preparation. Each bottle contains over 100 servings!
Oat bran biscuits The Dukan Diet biscuits are made with M2bisB6 grade oat bran, which ensures that it is milled and sifted to bring out all its medicinal properties. The flavour, consistency and crunchiness of the daily portion is a rewarding treat and fills you up.
Digestive aid fruit squares Constipation can be aggravated when following a weight loss diet that is low in fat and fruit. The Dukan Diet Digestive Aid Fruit Squares assist internal transit and help to keep you regular through a combination of figs, date pure and tamarind pulp.
To achieve your goals, any weight management programme should include a balanced diet and regular exercise, and nutritional supplementation when appropriate.
The Dukan Diet has taken the world by storm! • Over 8 million books sold • Over 24 million readers • Translated into 16 languages in over 30 countries • More than 70,000 Facebook fans

If you want to get more out of your exercise routine then you might want to top up your essential fatty acid (EFA) intake, according to results from a Danish study. A group of 61 participants ranging from regular exercisers to athletes were given a daily dose of Udo’s Oil Blend, containing a blend of omega-3, 6 and 9, for eight weeks and their exercise performance was monitored. The results showed that three quarters of the participants experienced an improvement in athletic performance by the end of the trial with the greatest effects being on stamina and endurance, as well as a decrease in recovery time after training. Notably, one runner went from running a total of approximately 90 km a week, to running a total of l47 km a week, without reaching the point of overstraining. It is thought that the essential fatty acids in the Udo’s Oil Blend can help to increase blood flow and oxygenation of tissues, as well as increase the body’s ability to absorb and utilise oxygen. The anti-inflammatory effects of EFAs are believed to have played a role in the decrease in recovery time as well. n To find out more, visit www.udoschoice.co.uk

Did you know? Research conducted by natural and organic brand Natracare has shown that 75% of UK gynaecologists believe that conventional sanitary protection could be the cause of intimate irritation due to the synthetic materials used in their manufacture. For instance, sanitary pads are often made using a combination of plastic-based materials such as polythene, polypropylene and polyacrylate super absorbent gel, surfactants and chlorine-bleached wood pulp as well as the occasional fragrance preserved with parabens. Mr David Nunns, Consultant Gynaecologist at Nottingham City Hospital, said: “Irritancy is a very common issue amongst women in the UK, and is still frequently mistaken for thrush. This study has shown that expert gynaecologists across the globe have recognised that sanitary protection may be a causative agent in triggering vulval irritancy and so switching to natural, chemical-free protection may help alleviate troublesome symptoms for many women.” n To find out more about organic and natural sanitary protection, including the range of chlorine-free, plastic-free Maxi Pads, visit www.natracare.com

Testicular cancer: time to raise awareness Statistics show that every year over 37,400 men will be diagnosed with a male-specific cancer. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged between 15 and 45, and it’s on the increase. Orchid, the male cancer charity, has recently launched a booklet full of comprehensive advice on testicular cancer plus support for men who have been diagnosed and are being treated for the disease. In over 25% of cases, the cancer has already spread by the time of diagnosis but, if caught at an early stage, the probability of a successful cure is more than 98%. Rebecca Porta, Chief Executive of Orchid said: “Male cancer awareness is a significant problem in the UK today and it can still be a challenge to get men to take their health seriously. We’re calling on all friends and team mates as well as close family and partners to be proactive in encouraging the man in their lives – their husband, father, son, brother – to be more male cancer aware.” n The booklet and downloadable fact sheets are available from www.orchid-cancer.org.uk June 2012

Getting to Know Your Characters Here’s some tips from competition judge Ann Burnett. How do you make your characters come alive? n Know what they look like. Cut out pictures of people from magazines and newspapers and keep them in a file for reference. Don’t pick glamorous or handsome shots (unless you’re writing in that genre) but choose pictures of ordinary people of different ages. n What would your character wear? Imagine what clothes they would buy from a store – would they shop in M&S or a charity shop, a boutique or online? What’s in their wardrobe? What colours do they usually choose? n How do they walk and talk? Do they walk tall with a straight back or do they mooch along with their head down? Is there a word or phrase they use a lot, like you know or like? Do they have a regional accent?
n Go round the supermarket with them and see what they put in their trolley. What does that tell you about them? n Interview them. What’s their most embarrassing moment? What’s the best piece of advice they've been given? Who would they like to invite to dinner? What eight records would they choose on a desert island? n And lastly, give them a name. Often, the right name for your character won’t come until you’ve worked through who they are. All this information is known as a character’s back-story. It may not be used in your story but it’s there in the background and it’s there to give your character depth and realism. Your character is much more rounded and believable because of what you, the author, know about them.

Bursting with vitality! We all know the importance of having our five-a-day of fruit and vegetables, but certain fruits in particular can help to boost our health, vitality and overall wellbeing. The New Nordic range of supplements draws on a variety of life-activating compounds from nature, from açai berries and cranberries to rose hip, chili and tomatoes. Let’s take a look at some of the health-boosting properties these fruits have to offer and which are now available from New Nordic in tablet form!
Rose hip Rose hips develop from the blossoms of the wild rose (rosa canina), which is native to Scandinavia, and these fruits are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. The fruits are picked, dried and extracted by washing out the inert cellulose, thereby concentrating the beneficial plant constituents. The Rosehip tablet is fortified with vitamin D3 and C for extra health benefits. Vitamin D3 helps to maintain a normal inflammatory response and supports the functioning of the immune system.
Açaí Açaí berries are prized as a superfood – and for good reason. They originate from the açaí palm, which is native to the Brazilian Amazon and contain high levels of antioxidant pigments called anthocyanins. Antioxidants are compounds which help to neutralise damaging free radicals which can lead to illness and accelerate the ageing process. The Açaí tablet is fortified with folic acid to help maintain normal cell division, and vitamin C to help support the normal function of the immune system.
Chili They add spice and flavour to a curry, but chili fruits also possess a number of health benefits. They belong to the plant species capsicum, which originates in America and are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and flavonoids. The Chili tablet contains stomach-friendly chili levels and green tea extract, which is rich in EGCG. It is also fortified with vitamin B6, which contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism, plus thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B12 which supports the body’s metabolism.
Tomato Lycopene The humble tomato originates in South America and is rich in the bright red carotenoid lycopene, which is known to have many benefits for men’s health, especially prostate and heart health. The Tomato Lycopene tablet is fortified with folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 and B12 contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism, reduction of tiredness and fatigue and support normal neurological and psychological functions. n This exciting range is now available to buy from your local health food shop. For more information call the customer helpline on 0800 389 1255 or visit www.newnordic.co.uk. For trade enquires contact Tree of Life or The Health Store. Call 01482 300 695.
Cranberry These super berries are another rich source of antioxidants and other phytonutrients, which protect against free radical damage and support overall health. The Cranberry tablet features an extract from cranberries harvested in the fall when the fruit takes its distinctive deep red colour. The berries are cleaned, sorted and extracted by washing out the inert cellulose and thereby concentrating the beneficial plant constituents. The cranberry tablet is fortified with vitamin C which helps to maintain the body’s immune response.

Tackling food intolerances and promoting gut health Food allergies are immediate, dramatic and may even be life threatening. People who have such allergies know the foods that cause them and steer well clear. Food intolerances are quite devious by comparison.
A look at the symptoms
We know that some foods can be hard on our tummies such as coffee, spicy foods, junk foods or fried foods; the consequences of which may be abdominal cramps, acid indigestion, constipation and diarrhoea. The symptoms of food intolerance may include these but they may also be fatigue, mental confusion, depression or muscle aches. In fact the symptoms of food intolerance may be so diverse that the sufferer may not associate them with food at all! They can appear many hours after the offending food item has been consumed or even only after multiple exposure. Stress, smoking, alcohol, antibiotic therapy, frequent aspirin or ibuprofen use and poor dietary habits all take their toll on the digestive system. This may then result in tissue injury and inflammation which produces the symptoms suffered. There are numerous ways to identify culprit foods but most are best done under the guidance of a health professional to avoid
By Nutritional Therapist Georgie O’Connor for the College of Naturopathic Medicine
inadvertent exclusion of major, important food groups which may leave you vulnerable to malnutrition.
Digestion and absorption
Identification and exclusion of the offending food from the diet, although important, is only part of the story; we also need to repair the gut lining to ensure efficient digestion and absorption of our food. When the source of the irritation has been identified and removed we then need to calm the tissue and gently line the intestinal tract with aloe vera juice or slippery elm powder. Next we need to repopulate the gut with good bacteria – you can do this with natural yoghurt but at this stage it would be more efficient to use a supplement. In addition to all this work please ensure that you also identify and either remove or minimise any lifestyle factors that were exacerbating the condition. Don’t despair if the offending food item was a real favourite – it needn’t be off the menu forever. Once your system has had around six months to recover you may well find that it’s possible to have the item as an occasional treat. Try a single small portion and check for side effects; if it’s still making you suffer, it was never your friend in the first place!

Bio-Health’s June Crisp introduces...
Agnus-castus, the herbal remedy for PMS The chaste berry tree or vitex agnus-castus is an attractive, flowering plant belonging to the family verbenaceae. Due to its attractive lilac-coloured flowers and pretty foliage it is often planted as an ornamental garden shrub. It is, however, the fruit of the plant that provides the remedy relied on by so many women to counteract the symptoms associated with the female monthly cycle. Most women during the years of menstruation experience some hormonal changes resulting in premenstrual symptoms or PMS. These complaints vary and can include headaches, breast tenderness, abdominal pain and bloating, uterine cramp, mild depression and mood swings. They can also vary in severity causing some women to dread the monthly cycle. Agnus-castus has the effect of inhibiting production of the hormone prolactin which is
PG 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 NEWS+ADS+GIVAWAYS.indd 10
largely responsible for menstrual irregularities and, in doing so, reduces common PMS symptoms. As such it can be regarded as a hormone regulator with progesterogenic activity and therefore can also be considered for alleviating other symptoms associated with the female cycle or change, ie menopausal and hormone-related acne. The first agnus-castus products were introduced by Gerard House in the UK in 1978 and since then it has been established as a Traditional Medicinal Herbal Product and licensed for quality and safety. From humble beginnings, agnus-castus is now officially recognised as an effective natural remedy for hormonal disturbances affecting women. Neutralise naughty foods!
Pascoe's pH-Balance minerals can help Celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss have caught on to the alkalising diet, cutting out certain foods to help maintain a healthy weight and vitality. The alkalising diet is based on the fact that acidic foods such as sugar, white flour, dairy and meat, if overindulged can lead to health problems such as fatigue and an inability to shift weight. Mineral salts can help you achieve a pH balanced body and counter the effects of eating acid-forming foods. New pH-Balance capsules by Pascoe can help maintain your body’s pH levels by neutralising any acid overload – from too many sweet treats for example!
What are pH levels? Your body’s optimum pH level is 70% alkaline and 30% acidic. A lower pH, from 1-6, indicates higher acidity; a higher pH, from 8-14, indicates a higher alkalinity, with pH 7 being neutral. Different parts of the human body maintain specific levels of these, but slight changes can upset the balance, and become a factor in weight gain, sluggishness, dull skin, muscle aches and cramps, and digestive problems.
How does pH-Balance work? pH Balance capsules are the natural multi-mineral aid for combating an acid overload. They contain carefully selected carbonate salts which have an alkaline effect and help to neutralise any build up of acid in the body.
Do you need a more alkaline diet? ✓ Are you running on adrenaline and find it hard to relax?
✓ Experiencing general tension in the body? ✓ Crave sugar, cheese, meat and bread? ✓ Have unexplained food intolerances? ✓ Poor skin? ✓ Inexplicably irritable and tired?
Available in powder and capsule form, pH-balance PASCOE is free from flavourings, sugar, lactose and gluten. Price £15.95 (100 tablets) and £14.95 (100g powder) from health shops.
These problems can indicate an acid overload.

Going for gold! With the Olympic Games just weeks away, interest and enthusiasm for sport and exercise has never been greater. And any athlete knows that optimum nutrition is essential in order to get the best performance. Olympic legend Tessa Sanderson CBE knows this more than most, which is why she is supporting Solgar’s new Performance Range of health products. Tessa, who won gold in the javelin at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and competed in a record six Olympic Games, from 1976 in Montreal to 1996 in Atlanta, believes strongly in the benefits of the six products making up Solgar’s Performance Range:
n L-Carnitine 500mg tablets n L-Carnitine 1500mg liquid n Carnitine complex n Energy Modulators n Nutri-Nano CoQ-10 n Celadrin 525mg
Team Solgar Tessa Sanderson is joining forces with fellow Olympic gold medalists Allan Wells and Ronnie Delany to form Team Solgar – and their aim is to promote the virtues of good nutrition in the pursuit of physical improvement. The Performance Range offers an innovative range of supplements aimed at athletes, sports enthusiasts and seniors wishing to continue with their active lifestyle. So, whether you are a competitive athlete, a weekend warrior or simply need your energy levels topped up to keep on top of your daily chores, Solgar’s Performance Range has something for all your health needs.
Tessa Sanderson says:
“I’ve been taking Solgar vitamins for many, many years now, since before I competed in the 1984 Olympics. That’s why I am delighted to be working with Solgar to promote their Performance Range. I think it’s very important to choose the right supplements for your health needs to maintain good energy levels and optimum health and fitness. I love all the products, but I particularly like the L-Carnitine tablets and liquid as they help to replenish my energy levels and speed up recovery after exercise. I particularly love the lemony taste of the liquid!”
Boost your energy with L-Carnitine Numerous studies document the benefits of L-Carnitine on energy, athletic performance and exercise capacity. Research also confirms the role of L-Carnitine for cardiovascular support. Solgar’s 500mg tablets provide free-form L-Carnitine to promote optimal absorption and assimilation, while the 1500mg liquid is a premium blend of free-form, pharmaceutical-grade L-Carnitine and pantothenic acid that helps to support energy and fat metabolism whilst promoting exercise recovery.

British Jubilee fever is hitting the UK this month. So what better time to celebrate the best of British-made products with a spot of patriotic purchasing? s we look forward to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this month the shops are full of British-themed products, from badges to bunting and tea towels to tableware. Here we take a look at some of the reasons why now, more than ever, it’s good to buy British.
It supports the economy With the recent announcement that Britain is in a double-dip recession, there’s no better time to show your support for the economy by buying British-made products. Choosing good value, British-made products supports UK jobs and encourages Britain’s industries which could help to bring about economic recovery. Next time you are shopping, make sure you check the labels of your goods to see where they were produced or grown.
It’s beneficial for your health Buying British fruit and vegetables means that you will be buying in season when they can be picked at the peak of ripeness. Fruits and vegetables start to lose nutrients once they’re picked. Also, buying local produce increases the chances of nutritional diversity and decreases the amount of handling, since local produce tends to be picked by hand rather than machine. Less handling means less chance of contamination, which can increase the rate of decay. Taste is affected too: when crops are transported they must be harvested early and refrigerated so that they don’t rot during transportation. As a result they don’t develop their full flavour as they have not ripened completely. When food is in season there is usually an abundance of supply meaning that 16
seasonal produce is often on special offer. Keep an eye out for Buy One Get One Free and money off offers on seasonal produce.
It’s good for the environment According to research from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the average fresh food item on our dinner table travels 1,500 miles to get there. When we buy British goods it means the products or food didn’t have to travel far from the site of its production to the consumer, which means less fuel was used and the whole process is more environmentally-friendly. Buying British therefore helps to keep our carbon footprint low. It’s important to bear this fact in mind next time you are shopping and to start thinking about the choices you have – could you buy a British alternative to the product you wanted? More often than not the answer is yes. Perhaps it’s time we all started taking more responsibility for the environmental impact of our own consumption.
British Food Fortnight This year, British Food Fortnight, which traditionally takes place during the autumn, runs at the same time as the Olympics under the title ‘Love British Food 2012’. The event, which celebrates the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produces, will be held from 27 July to 12 August 2012 to capitalise on the excitement of the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games.

summer Dukan do it!
Here comes the sun Now that summer is well and truly on its way it’s good to remind ourselves of the potentially harmful effects that non-protected sun exposure can have on our health. In addition to the increased risk of skin cancer, skin ageing can be greatly increased by enjoying a sunny day without sunscreen. PhytoBronz is a new supplement which has been shown in clinical studies to cut heat stress proteins, or HSPs, by up to 60%, reducing the skin ageing and drying process. Available for normal and fair skin, PhytoBronz contains specific nutrients to improve your natural tan while reducing skin ageing, and provides additional health support for eyes, which can also be damaged by increased UV rays. PhytoBronz should always be used in conjunction with a high SPF sunscreen. Visit www.healthy2u.co.uk

In one particular study involving a group of schoolchildren over 10 weeks of the ‘flu season, the group taking Bio-Strath lost just 1.9 days of school compared to 8.6 days in the control group. The Dukan Diet book has been a phenomenal success, with a whopping 24 million readers worldwide. In the UK, where reported followers include the Middleton family in preparation for the Royal Wedding last year, the book has reached number one in the best sellers list. Now, consumers will be able to purchase specially formulated foods and supplements to support the diet plan. Look out for Dukan products at your local health store.
Cold sore complaint “I’ve just developed a cold sore on my lip – I thought this was something that only happened in winter time? Any suggestions for how I can treat it?”
“You may associate cold sores with the winter time but, as summer arrives, breakouts can be triggered by UV rays. Silicea Cold Sore Lip Gel is an effective natural treatment for cold sores. What makes Silicea Gel so special is that, apart from its soothing effect on the burning and itching sensation caused by cold sores, it has an unusually high bonding capacity with water and wound secretions. This means that the secretions from the cold sore are bound to the gel and the blisters are systematically dried out. In this way, the spread of the virus is inhibited and the tingling, burning and itching sensations are relieved as the healing process is accelerated. Visit www.bodywiseuk.com for more information.”
This month we have £100 of Dukan Diet products, including a copy of the book, to give away to one lucky Your Healthy Living reader! Simply email your name and address to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘DUKAN’ in the subject box to be entered into the free draw. Offer closes 26 July 2012.

Want to know the most important vitamins, minerals and supplements for men’s health? Liz Parry talks to the experts to find out
ecent research suggests that men need to pay more attention to their health. According to a 2011 survey carried out by Insureblue one in five men has not seen a doctor in the last three years and 2% have never seen one. This is despite the fact that two thirds of those surveyed have a family history of cancer, stroke and heart disease. Choosing the right vitamins and minerals can make a difference to your overall health, but with the vast array on offer it can be baffling deciding which ones to take. We spoke to a number of natural health experts to get their advice on the most important vitamins and minerals for men’s health.
“The role of vitamin D in men’s health is enormous and encompasses immune, sexual, skeletal and cardiovascular health,” says Alice Bradshaw, education manager with Solgar (www.solgar.co.uk). “Research demonstrates that vitamin D deficiency is a factor which drives inflammation, which we know is at the root of most chronic diseases. One particular study found that subjects were up to 80% more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke if they were deficient in vitamin D. Dark-skinned men in the UK have a higher incidence of prostate cancer, which has been partly attributed to their lower vitamin D status (people with dark skin synthesize less vitamin D on exposure to sunlight than those with light-coloured skin).”
“Vitamins B6, B9 (also known as folic acid) and B12 act in the body as methyl donors, enabling the metabolic process of ‘methylation’,” says Nina Omotoso, a nutritionist with Revital (www.revital.co.uk). “Poor methylation has negative effects on both cardiovascular and mental health. Having insufficient methyl donors encourages the build-up of the amino acid homocysteine, which is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Recent studies have also suggested a role of methylation in Alzheimer’s disease as sufferers tend to have high levels of homocysteine and low levels of folic acid. Homocysteine levels naturally increase with age so older men or those with a family history of CVD should consider getting their homocysteine level checked. If it’s high take a supplement which contains these important B vitamins along with TMG, another potent methyl-donor.” Continued over ➜

Magnesium “This is one of the most important nutrients that the body needs,” says Alice Bradshaw. “Unless men are eating a diet based on wholefoods, they’re unlikely to meet their nutritional needs for this mineral. Additionally, the consumption of alcohol, refined foods, caffeine and sugar all reduce magnesium status. Magnesium plays a pivotal role in bone health where, along with other nutrients, it helps to ensure proper mineralisation of the bones. Cardiovascular health, nerve and muscle function, blood pressure and mood regulation are all dependent on magnesium as are hundreds of other enzymatic reactions that occur within the body.” Good sources of magnesium include most vegetables, especially the dark green ones, as well as almonds, Brazil nuts, whole grains and cocoa.
Judy Watson, a nutritional therapy consultant, recommends co-enzyme Q10 for “tolerance to exercise, improved muscle tone and to support a healthy heart.” She adds: “Men are more at risk of heart disease due to lifestyle factors such as less sleep, more red meat and fewer green vegetables in their diet. Levels of co-enzyme Q10 also decrease if you are taking statins. So, taking a supplement of this energy-rich nutrient will help give some protection and is recommended from age 35 onwards. As it helps to increase tolerance to exercise it’s important to consider if you are thinking of taking up a marathon or triathalon. The recommended amount is between 60mg and 100mg daily.”
“An often overlooked mineral with many important biological functions for men’s health is boron,” says Sarah West. “Boron supports the metabolism of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D (making it essential for strong bones) and works as an anti-inflammatory, making it crucial for good joint health. Furthermore, research suggests that it may possess anti-carcinogenic properties. According to a 2004 study from UCLA’s Department of Epidemiology, men with the most boron in their diet were half as likely to develop prostate cancer as those with the least.” Top up your intake of boron through fruits and vegetables, almonds, dates, peanuts, prunes, raisins and soya beans.
PG22,23,24,25 MEN+ADS+HEROES.indd 24
“Research shows that sperm counts in men may be falling, possibly due to poor nutrition,” says nutritional therapist Sarah West. “Zinc may help maintain the functional lifespan of ejaculated sperm. Since men lose an estimated 5mg of zinc every time they ejaculate, a good intake of zinc is essential for reproductive health. Inadequate zinc levels can prevent the pituitary gland from releasing the hormones that stimulate production of testosterone, which may result in the conversion of testosterone into excess oestrogen. Whilst men do have a low level of natural oestrogen, an imbalance in the testosterone/ oestrogen ratio can result in weight gain and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and blood clots.” Top up your zinc levels by eating plenty of shellfish, lean meat, eggs, dairy products, nuts, pulses and whole grains.
“A daily dose of vitamin C is vital to guard against cellular damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS),” explains Nina Omotoso. “Although they occur naturally in the body and form an important part of our defensive immune systems, ROS are also produced from external sources such as cigarette smoking, alcohol, industrial compounds or even exercise. A build-up of these unstable, highly reactive molecules can lead to cell damage and there is a well-researched link between the oxidative damage caused by high levels of ROS and reduced fertility. Men with low levels of vitamin C in their semen have a higher incidence of sperm damage so take a ROS-quenching, vitamin-C rich antioxidant complex, especially if you’re hoping to hear the patter of tiny feet any time soon.”
“The mineral selenium is a good antioxidant to include in your daily supplements,” says Nina Omotoso. “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK; around 101 new cases are diagnosed each day. It’s typically an age-related disease with risk and occurrence increasing each decade after your fifties. Low selenium is a good predictor of prostate cancer, and while this mineral does occur naturally in our soil, years of intensive farming have reduced soil mineral content and the amount we find in our food, particularly in the UK. A daily supplement of 100mcg will reduce disease risk and may also benefit in the early stages of prostate cancer.”

Here to help Independent health store advice on oral healthcare Although overall oral healthcare is better than it was 20 years ago, the number of adults in the UK having regular check-ups is falling. Currently a staggering 19 out of 20 people will suffer from gum disease at some point in their life. This is a worrying statistic that can be altered by proactive consideration of toothpastes, mouthwashes and natural remedies. Conventional toothpastes from chemists and supermarkets usually contain alcohol and sodium lauryl sulphate, both of which can exacerbate any mouth irritation or dry mouth, (which sometimes results from certain medications). They may also contain synthetic colours and flavours, both of which can add to the toxic overload in our bodies.
Toothpaste and mouthwash There is a good choice of natural toothpastes available in independent health stores. Some of the more common ingredients include aloe vera, propolis, myrrh, tea tree, fennel, clove and cinnamon. These toothpastes have effective antimicrobial and antibacterial action, excellent cleaning properties and many are certified organic. Look out for Betaine which stimulates saliva production to aid dental health and to counteract the symptoms of Dry Mouth Syndrome. Most conventional mouthwashes contain alcohol, synthetic colours and flavours and saccharin, all of which should be avoided if we care about our health. So for healthy gums, and to combat bad breath, plaque and fight bacteria, consider 26
PG26,27 INSTORE+HEROES+AD.indd 26
an alcohol-free mouthwash with natural ingredients such as aloe vera, witch hazel, echinacea and tea tree. As an alternative to saccharin, consider xylitol as a natural sweetener. It is a natural sugar found in corn, wheat, beech or birch wood and studies have found it to be tooth friendly.
The fluoride debate Fluoride is an ingredient in toothpastes that arouses different points of view. Water fluoridation can cause dental fluorosis (tiny white streaks or specks in the enamel of the tooth). These spots are permanent and may darken in time. The risk of fluoride overexposure occurs between the ages of three months and eight years. Some manufacturers of natural toothpastes offer a choice of ‘fluoride free’ or ‘with fluoride’, so this is very much about individual choice. To enhance healthy gums and teeth there are a number of nutrients that can be helpful. Co-enzyme Q10 is particularly important for the prevention and treatment of gum disease and gingivitis. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids is indispensable for healthy gums, so supplementation is important if deficiency is a possibility (smoking depletes vitamin C). Folic acid and calcium are also supportive for oral health. So for those of us keen to look after our teeth and gums, natural toothpastes, mouthwashes and nutrient support can go a long way to a dazzling smile and the added confidence that comes with it.

I wantto know… You asked: “I’m 25 and I don’t eat much meat or dairy but I get very tired and my joints don’t feel good when walking. The doctor said I should take iron, which I try to do, with vitamin C. I am trying to eat more protein from hemp powder or soya foods, but am not very organised and on the go with a toddler. Can you help?” Anne-France Rix from The Food Doctor Clinic answers: Fatigue and arthritic aches are linked to many causative factors, so I suggest you consult a Nutritional Therapist to identify how your diet and lifestyle could be contributing to nutritional imbalances and inflammatory damage, and which supplements may be required (ensuring safety alongside any medications). Restricting meat, milk and cheese should not be a problem, so long as you rely more on other protein-rich foods: oily and white fish, eggs, pulses, nuts and seeds. These also contain anti-inflammatory omega-3 and 6 fats – crucial for combating aches and pains, producing energy and sharper brain function. Including hemp or whey protein shakes can be a useful snack or breakfast ‘on the go’. Always carry healthy snacks with you to balance your blood sugar for steady energy all day. Try fresh fruit or dried apricots/

You asked: “Is it normal to wash hair every day? If I don’t wash my hair daily, it looks dirty and oily. It doesn’t look fresh. Is there anything I could do in order to have hair that doesn’t require daily washing?” Jo Blaylock, Pravera General Manager, answers: It is true to say that people often get into the habit of washing their hair daily, and if you have oily skin, this can simply stimulate the scalp into producing even more oil (to replace that which is being washed away), adding even more to what becomes an on-going problem. Many commercial products leave a coating on the hair to give the impression of gloss and health, and this build-up increases into a hard, yet invisible, coating on the hair. Using a natural shampoo will help to remove this buildup from the hair and scalp. It will balance the pH of the skin and the correct shampoo can resolve the issues that affect your hair in the same way that a good skin cream can improve the condition of the skin. Daily washing is not always
necessary and with regular use of the correct shampoo the hair will look in better condition for longer and will need less washing. Do remember that when you switch to a natural shampoo your hair will go through a process of ‘stripping’, where the build-up of chemical gunk on the hair will gradually be removed. This can take from two weeks to a month to complete. Stick with it though and the rewards will be worth it! n Pravera Ltd distribute lavera, MADARA, Primavera, Alma Win, Monte Bianco, Sodasan, Florascent, terre d’Oc and Organyc. Visit www.pravera.co.uk

100% MINERAL SUNSCREEN @laverauk laveranaturalskincare laveranaturalskincare
Sun protection for all the family Rebecca Goodyear is Marketing Director with Kinetic Enterprises When it comes to the sun, there are two types of rays – UVA and UVB. UVB rays are essential for the skin’s production of vitamin D, but can cause sunburn. UVA rays are longer than UVB which means they penetrate deeper in to the skin and can cause melanoma, the worst type of skin cancer.
Sunscreens are known to reduce the body’s production of vitamin D by up to 97-99.9%. Vitamin D has many roles in the body, such as promoting strong bones, supporting heart and kidney function, enhancing muscle strength and optimising blood pressure and cholesterol levels. We know that longterm excessive exposure to the sun can increase the risk of skin cancer, but there is also evidence that sun exposure without burning can not only significantly decrease the risk of melanoma, but also protects against at least 16 other types of cancer, including breast, colon, pancreatic and prostate.
The two main ingredients used in natural sunscreens are titanium oxide and zinc oxide, two naturally occurring minerals. When used in sunscreen these minerals are not absorbed by the skin as the molecules are too big, so they sit on the skin’s surface where they reflect and scatter both UVA and UVB rays. There have been questions over the safety of titanium oxide in recent years, as it is thought to be hazardous if inhaled in its powdered form, but in a sun lotion this is not an issue. Zinc oxide is considered safe and has been used in sunscreens for over 75 years.
Synthetic chemicals that are used in sunscreens work in a different way – they absorb the UV rays. Once the molecules become saturated with UV they disintegrate which means you have to reapply. Some of these chemicals, such as PABA and derivatives of PABA, are now thought to be irritants and possibly carcinogenic. Also, the manner in which these sunscreens work means that the skin is subjected to heat stress.
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measurement used to grade the effectiveness of a sunscreen. It represents the length of time you can stay out without being burnt. In other words, SPF15 means that you can stay out 15 times longer than if you were wearing no lotion at all. SPF30 is not twice as strong as SPF15. SPF15 offers 92% protection from UV rays, whereas SPF30 offers 97% and SPF40 97.5%. I would plump for anything with SPF30 or higher if you are going to be out in the sun’s rays for long periods of time.
Mineral sunscreens are effective immediately after application but synthetic sunscreens take half an hour to work. As a rule of thumb, apply every couple of hours and after swimming. Mineral sunscreens are waterproof but it is better to be safe than sorry!
Parents should use a good quality high protection broad spectrum UVA/ UVB sunscreen that is designed especially for kids, as their skin is more sensitive than an adult’s. Look for a formula with antioxidants as well as soothing and nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, calendula and vitamin E that will care for their skin from the outside. Try to keep them out of the sun when it’s at its most powerful, around 11am to 2pm, and keep them covered up during these hours with clothes or a parasol.

Top tips for travellers Peter Cartwright MSc MA is a Human Microbiota Specialist at Protexin Probiotics Travelling can be stressful. Even if you have a lovely holiday destination, getting there can be full of pressures and aggravations. It is known that a stressed mind sends messages along nerve cells to the gut, altering its activity. This in turn can unbalance the flora. Other influences on the flora can be a change in climate, as well as changes in the types of food and drinks consumed. Also, if you are visiting a hot country, it is easier for food contamination to lead to food poisoning.
The gut flora defends the body by stopping germs from becoming established in the intestine. It also activates the immune cells in the gut wall, so that the immune system is more responsive against any harmful bug or toxin that enters the body. The flora consists of hundreds of different species of bacteria, all in a dynamic balance. If the flora becomes disturbed, its ability to protect us from disease is reduced.
A disturbed gut flora is often associated with stomach cramps, diarrhoea or constipation, as well as bloating and excessive wind. There are drugs that can help to bring diarrhoea under control, but it is not advisable to take these long-term as they affect the natural muscle contractions of the gut wall.
Natural remedies are usually based around probiotics. This can take the form of local fermented products. There is usually a local fermented milk product, although it may have a name different from yoghurt. There can also be local fermented vegetables. Fermented foods are easier to digest, and will contain some lactic acid bacteria, which have associated health benefits.
Probiotics that contain several different species are usually better, because each species will act in a different way, and this may be needed, because of the range of different causes of floral disturbance. The main types of probiotic bacteria to look for on a product label are lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. On returning from holiday, it is a good idea to keep taking the probiotics for a least one week, and preferably two, as this will help aid the full recovery of your gut flora.
How to have a healthy holiday Natalie Lamb, Dip NT, is a Nutritional Therapist with Protexin Probiotics A healthy immune system is primed to protect against invading pathogens. Since childhood we have built up a team of antibodies waiting ready to fight invaders from our home country but, when abroad, local strains of pathogens will be new to the body. The change in diet, water and stress of travelling can also alter the balance of our gut microflora.
Increasing numbers of travellers are now considering the use of probiotics as a preventative to support their digestive and immune systems at this time. One study looked at a group of tourists visiting Turkey where travellers’ diarrhoea affected 40% of the tourists compared to only 24% of those who took a multi-strain probiotic containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. Garlic and grapefruit seed extract are also wellknown anti-microbials to keep unwanted organisms at bay.
Many people suffer from colds when they go on holiday. Planes and their air-conditioning are thought to be a mecca for spreading germs. Taking some zinc and vitamin C during the flight could help give your immune system a little extra support. Again probiotics come in useful here because up to 80% of our immune system is located within the digestive tract, and probiotics can help to stimulate the effectiveness of the immune cells lining the gut wall.
There is a growing understanding of the importance of vitamin D in relation to boosting immune health. Vitamin D is known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ because it is synthesised in the skin after exposure to UV rays. I would recommend trying to get at least 15 minutes of midday sunshine without sunscreen (longer exposure without protection could lead to sunburn and possibly skin cancer).
Sunburn is another common problem for holiday-makers and aloe vera gel can help to soothe the pain and burning. A preventative measure would be to stock up on antioxidants, which are believed to protect the skin from damage by reducing the harmful effects of free radicals generated after exposure to the sun’s UV rays. I would advise eating a wide variety of raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of different colours.

Healing honey: your holiday essential When you’re packing for your holidays, be sure to include some honey in your bag. Its healing powers could help to combat those niggling ailments threatening to spoil your fun...
From soothing upset tummies to calming pre-flight nerves, the healing properties of honey are vast. Containing approximately 150 biologically active ingredients, honey is increasingly being valued for its potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is now being recommended by the conventional medical community for the treatment of a range of health issues.
How does it work? It is believed that honey contains enzymes that facilitate the release of hydrogen peroxide and gluconic acid in the body, which promote healing. Research in Israel in the 1970s found that bees feeding on plants with healing properties would produce a honey containing medicinal benefits. When a bee processes its food, a synergetic process takes place during the digestive process which intensifies the active properties of herbs and plants, increasing their effectiveness.

Travellers take note! GastroMel is known to aid people suffering
from severe bouts of diarrhoea. Mild symptoms can be relieved within a few minutes of taking the honey and more severe symptoms can be alleviated within 7–10 days.
RelaxMel can help to combat the symptoms of stress. So, if you are feeling anxious about boarding a plane for your holidays a spoonful of honey could help to calm you down and soothe those pre-flight nerves!

The lowdown on…
therapies Feeling stressed and overwhelmed? The Bach flower remedy Elm can help dispel these feelings and enable you to get on with things again without thoughts of failure.
Try this! If you suffer with migraines, aromatherapy could help to ease the pain and tension. Try mixing together the following essential oils: three drops of basil, four drops of lavender and three drops of peppermint and add to a vaporizer. Relax in a darkened room and inhale deeply.
In the news New research has shown that a combination of complementary and alternative therapies with conventional medical care can offer significant benefits for people with lower back pain. The US study, which was published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, involved 20 patients suffering with lower back pain and took place over a 12-week period. The therapies offered included massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, occupational therapy, physical therapy, mind-body techniques and nutritional counselling. The conventional care approach included non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), physical therapy, bed rest as needed, education and changes in activity levels. The report stated that the patients receiving the integrated care programme “experienced significantly greater improvements” at 12 weeks than those receiving conventional care alone. 42

What is it? The practice of reflexology involves applying pressure to points on the hands or feet to stimulate the body’s capacity for self-healing. It is based on the ancient Chinese belief that energy or ‘chi’ flows around the body. When this energy is flowing freely we are mentally, physically and emotionally in balance. However, if this energy becomes blocked, we may experience illness and the body becomes unbalanced. How does it work? The premise is that there are a number of reflex points on the feet and hands which correspond to the different parts of the body. By applying pressure to these reflex points using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques, this is said to free up any blocked energy in the body and speed up the healing process. It is also thought that crystal deposits found in the feet and hands can be worked on by the reflexologist in order to break down and get rid of toxic waste products, thus restoring energy flow. What conditions can it help with? Studies have shown that reflexology can benefit a wide range of conditions from digestive disorders, headaches and asthma to sinusitis, period pains and fatigue. It is particularly effective for reducing stress and tension and promoting better sleep. Where do I find out more? Contact the Association of Reflexologists to find a practitioner in your local area. ! e c dan He’s thrilled audiences in the West End in Saturday Night Fever and Tap Dogs and he’s turned his talents to acting in Hollywood. But more recently Adam Garcia has become known for his role on the judging panel of Sky One’s Got to Dance. Here Liz Parry talks to him about his passion for dance and how he just can’t give up chocolate… How did you enjoy your role as a judge on Got to Dance? Adam: It’s an amazing job! I get to be part of a show that’s trying to represent dance across the UK and Ireland so it’s really cool. It’s great discovering new dancers and new dance styles and seeing the commitment that people have despite the fact that most of them aren’t even professional.
Would you encourage more people to take up dancing as a form of exercise? Adam: Oh absolutely. It forces you to really co-ordinate yourself through music which takes a lot of concentration. So I think it helps in not just a physical way but also a mental way.
So how did you first get into dancing?
Adam: I first got into dance when I was about seven and I did it because my friend was doing it. I can’t remember desperately wanting to go to dance lessons but I found that I loved the music, the theatrical side of it and the storytelling aspect. Music has always possessed a narrative element for me. I started off in ballet but I’ve done virtually all forms of dancing. People

tend to know me as a tap dancer now, but when I did Saturday Night Fever no one knew me as a tap dancer – I was a disco and contemporary dancer. When I moved into acting the producers had no idea I was a dancer.
Tell us a bit about your exercise regime. How do you keep fit?
Adam: I like to vary my exercise routine as I get bored quickly. So most weeks I’ll do some kind of class, or go to the studio and potter about with my tap shoes on, then I’ll swim once or twice a week. I also do cross training and running and I like to play footie with my mates or play a game of golf. If I’m in Sydney I’ll probably surf every day or go for a beach run. If I’m in LA I’ll do sprint and weight training and strength training. I ride my bike everywhere if it’s nice weather. I’m lucky to have the sort of job that allows me to do that. I’ve found that because I’ve been dancing for a long time if I don’t exercise I start to ache very quickly, particularly in my back and my knees.
Do you follow a particular diet to keep healthy?
Adam: I eat a lot of fruit and nuts – I like things like banana and carrot cake. I also love fish, especially pan-fried with salt and pepper. I mainly eat carbs in the
morning and maybe some at lunch but rarely in the evening. Dinner is normally veggies and protein. I love all kinds of dairy – cheese, yoghurt, cream, milk. I could be really strict and cut down on fat but I don’t mind having a bit of body fat – and there’s no way that I’m giving up chocolate!
How do you keep hydrated after all the exercise you do?
Do you take any supplements?
Adam: I think it’s really important to keep hydrated, so I drink a couple of bottles of Mune healthy water each day after training. A lot of rehydration drinks have an enormous amount of sugar in them whereas Mune doesn’t and I like that. I think the Manuka honey in it makes a real difference as it gives it a sweet taste but it’s all-natural and free from preservatives. It’s a good drink to have after dinner too as it’s got a good flavour and you can have it instead of a dessert. I like to have a couple of glasses before I go to sleep to keep hydrated and get some vitamins in my system. Adam: In the winter I tend to take vitamin C and zinc. If I’m feeling a bit tired I take ginseng, and if I’m doing tonnes of exercise I’ll take fish oil or a joint supplement. June 2012

You’re obviously a busy man. How do you relax and chill out?
What plans do you have for the summer?
Adam: I work in the States, Australia and the UK, I’ve got a home in London and family in Australia, so I do a lot of travelling and I really enjoy it. I love going to the theatre and ballet – that’s one of my favourite things to do. I also like going for walks and playing golf – I find that to be relaxing. I really love baths too – you can’t have them in Australia because there’s not enough water so when I’m in England I really indulge myself. Adam: It’s mainly going to be spent in Chichester, on the south coast, where I’ll be performing the role of Bill in Kiss Me Kate. We open in June and go on till September. I should have a few weeks off during the Olympics and I hope to be in London for that because I think it’s going to be a fantastic event.
