Editors Letter Hello Everyone, Welcome to the latest edition of the handbook. We’ve included lots of details of what’s on in our fantastic local area over the coming months, including details of the forthcoming Hythe Festival, the local farmers markets, and the ever-popular list of local boot fair dates! We really do hope you enjoy it. In each edition of the handbook, we always include a range of other articles about local news, charities and useful information something for everyone we hope. And if there’s a particular item or subject you’d like to see in future editions of the handbook please do just let us know. If you’re involved in a local community event or sponsored activity, do get in touch in plenty of time before the event so that we

can help to spread the word and make it as successful as possible. And if you run a local business, but don’t currently have your advert included in the handbook, why not give it a try? We’ve been producing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and our readers will always let you know where they’ve got your details from, so let us help get your phone ringing - just give us a call on 01303 266755 for a no obligation chat. Hythe Festival 2018 dresses to be worn), a Fashion Show, a Puppet Show in The Grove……

The Hythe Festival of Arts and Heritage 2018 is a 9 day showcase of the very best of local culture. From live music to workshops, events for all the family, plays in the park and self-guided trails showing ‘hidden Hythe’, the Hythe festival has something for everyone and is not to be missed.

2018 promises to be an incredible event, with something for everyone – including a photography competition, an art trail, Teddy Bears Picnic, a flower festival, Shakespeare in the Park, concerts, the Grand Parade, and the spectacular ‘Festival Fun on The Green’ – a 2 day extravaganza of fun with music, dancing, drama; stalls to browse and displays to enjoy. Please support this local event with many activities free and aimed at all ages. Tell your family & friends and we are certain you won’t be disappointed.

The Hythe Festival comes round every second year. 2018 will be the 15th modern day festival; 30 years, and still going strong. In fact, there is even more history than that, for in 1951 when the Civic Society was still called the Hythe Citizens’ Union, a Festival Week took place and included (according to the Official Programme – price 6d), an Arts and Crafts Exhibition in the Institute (First Prize a 4-valve AC/DC Mains Wireless Receiver), a Ball in the Imperial (tickets 12/6), a Miss Hythe Festival, (young ladies over 16, resident in Hythe could enter; afternoon

Our shoot together will be relaxed and informal. This allows me to capture the real personality of your family and friends. For children, this approach brings out the magic - they get to have fun and be themselves, translating fantastically into the pictures! Who is Counselling for? So when should I seek a Counsellor?

Nick Langley (MNCS Accred) runs a private Counselling practice in Hythe, offering traditional face to face, as well as Walking Therapy. Also a qualified Teacher, he is a trainer at Thoros - Centre for Therapy Learning in Lyddon-Sea, whose Diploma has recently been accredited by the National Counselling Society. Within his column, he will explain various approaches to Counselling, and how they can be of benefit. Who is Counselling for and when should I seek it? The short answer to this question is that Counselling is for anyone, whenever they feel that they need it. Does attending Counselling mean that you are somehow lesser a person than those around you? Absolutely, categorically not. By seeking support of any kind your are demonstrating great strength and a will to thrive; I see in my clients some of the most courageous, determined P16

and willful people that I have ever had the privilege to meet, even if they don’t see it in themselves to start with. Is Counselling for certain people, and not for others?

Far too many of my clients, through fear of judgement or an internal need to just ‘deal with things’ wait until they are desperate for support before contacting a mental health professional or their GP. Counselling is not only for those who are in crisis, but also for those who sense its approach and want to avoid it. You can seek Counselling at any point, and if you decide that the timing isn’t right, then can postpone; it’s your call. Sometimes though, just sharing your thoughts with a non judgemental, unbiased and empathic trained listener can help to you find your bearings, survey the landscape of your life and feel more confident in its direction.

An important question: Over the course of my career I have worked with a wonderfully diverse group of people. I have worked with clients of all ages, gender identities and ethnicity. Some groups are more NLangley Counselling offers a challenging professional and confidential to engage for Counselling service in Hythe, Kent. sure, with the social stigma Services include: around mental • Personal Counselling health proving an obstacle for • Clinical Supervision for Counselling Professionals many, however I have never • Academic Support for Trainee Counsellors met a person who was any Tel: 07865 085943 less a Human Email: info@nlangleycounselling.co.uk Being than the next, simply by asking for help. Children’s literacy charity recognised

Children’s literacy charity recognised for inspiring wellbeing in the community Local children’s literacy charity Beanstalk has been awarded for its innovative interactions within the field of wellbeing at the Inspiring Wellbeing Awards, held at the Ashford International Hotel. The Inspiring Wellbeing Awards highlight projects that set the template for wellbeing, showing the path to a better way of life – whether at home, in work or out in the community. Malou Bengtsson-Wheeler, Area Manager for Beanstalk South East, was presented with the award and was praised for Beanstalk’s work in the community category. Beanstalk supports children who have fallen behind with their reading by recruiting, training and placing volunteers to work one-toone with pupils in primary schools across England. Last year it helped over 1,650 children in the South East through the support of approximately 380 volunteers. Malou said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won at the Inspiring Wellbeing Awards in the community category! This is our 26th year of supporting children with reading in the South East and it is so important for us to work closely with communities to offer flexible volunteering opportunities where people

can make a real difference to children’s lives. So many of our reading helpers tell us how much they get from the experience themselves, from the training we provide right through to the ongoing support they receive once they are placed in a school. It really works both ways because the difference our volunteers make to children and their reading confidence is amazing to see.” Diana Vincent has been a reading helper for four years:

“I really do believe I get as much out of it as the children do and I am really proud to be a Beanstalk reading helper and regularly talk to others and encourage them to do it too. I get lots of support from the local team in Kent and this makes you feel like you are part of a bigger picture. If you can’t read, you can’t grow, and that is why this is so important to me.”

Beanstalk needs more members of the community from across the South East to help children that have fallen behind with reading. To find out more about volunteering with Beanstalk please: Visit www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk Call Beanstalk on 0845 450 0307

The Craven Formula

Not a mathematical equation, but a unique self-help programme based on a synergy of hypnosis, meditation and mindfulness developed over a number of years by Helen Craven. For over twenty years, Helen has trained with many different master practitioners from around the world and also acknowledges her many hundreds of clients as wonderful teachers too. She has combined her skills and experience of hypnosis with her training and personal practice in Mindfulness to create a formula that helps people to take themselves to where they want to be. However successful we are in our lives, there are invariably things that creep into our thoughts or behaviour patterns that do not help us achieve our goals. This is part of being human. This programme helps us to overcome the negative aspects of our lives, whilst accepting ourselves as we are. It builds on our natural goal-seeking capabilities as well as assisting us to find greater peace and satisfaction from ourselves and the world around us. The Craven Formula can be adapted for specific areas of concern, or as a general enhancement process for greater feelings of well-being. P32

One client wrote - “the sharing of your skills and wisdom has made an incredible change in my daily life. When I started the course with you I had many challenges in my life to deal with, and with your help I now have a much healthier perspective on life. My anxiety levels are certainly reduced, and I choose to live a life with more understanding, peace and harmony.” Courses in The Craven Formula will be running in Sandgate during the coming months. We make your business, everyone’s business!

How do I advertise in the handbooks? Arranging for your advert to be included within the handbook is simple. Simply call us on 01303 266755 to book your space. Then, if you have a print ready advert, email it to us at info@eastkenthandbooks.com

Don’t have a print ready advert? No problem, email us your logo (if you have one) and the wording you’d like to include, and our graphic designer will put an advert together for you to use in the handbooks. He does a great job, and it’s free if you are advertising for more than 1 edition (which is how most people book, as your phone calls will increase as people get used to seeing your advert within the handbooks).

Why advertise within the handbooks? We’ve been publishing the handbooks for over 10 years now, and most of our advertisers have their advert included in every edition; why? Because it works - having their advert in the handbooks gets their telephones ringing.

We deliver the handbooks directly through the door of the local community. That means, when our readers are looking for a product or service, your phone number is right there in front of them, in their home. People like things to be straight forward, so if they’re looking for a company to do some work for them, they’ll be very likely to call the phone number they have already in front of them - particularly because our readers know, like and trust the handbooks. By association, they feel the same way about the company’s that advertise with us. Some of the feedback we get from our readers includes: “I wanted to call and say how useful the handbook is. It’s an excellent read and I know that I can feel confident using any of the advertisers in it” “We’ve just moved to the area and have found the handbook so useful - really pleased we’ve got it through the door” “Thank you for your recent article on jobs around the home - I was able to tick a number of things off my to do list using the companies you recommended.” And from our advertisers: “I have been advertising in the handbooks for a long while now, and would like to confirm I get more calls from it than I ever did from my newspaper advertising. I think it’s because people keep the handbooks in their homes, whereas the newspapers get recycled. Whatever it is, it’s working - please keep my advert running” “The handbook has been marvellous for our business; some of our best customers have come from there”

How do I get in touch?

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but nobody else does.” - Stuart H. Britt
