Does anyone else feel like everyday is groundhog day, Kids go back to school, Kids home on holidays, Kids due to go back to school, but, oh no....now we are in lockdown again!

My feelings about the people who have caused this are on the opposite page, please read.

In Kids Corner this month we celebrate Science Week 15th - 23rd August we have a fun experiment with Skittles plus a science puzzle. We also have two pages of Kids Kitchen on pages 28 and 29.

Still in the lockdown cooking mode? Well you can cook up a storm with our Winter Warmer’s, try our Minestrone Soup it is delicious, and for the sweet tooth we have our Easy Moist Apple Slice so easy to make and guaranteed to disappear before your eyes, maybe the Kids will want to help with this one!

With the children home, relaxing in a quiet corner....well that is just not going to happen, so on page 10 we have something to do with the Kids inside and outside, you just need some rope,(no you cannot strangle them) but you can have some fun too. Editorial She’ll be right Mate!

I have always believed Australians have had a sense of responsibility to look after fellow Australians, but my faith is being sorely tested.

We have never liked rules or being told what to do; ‘she’ll be right mate’ is how Australia ticked over, but we always did what was right.

NOW we need to make everything right.

Something has gone wrong and it reduces me to tears to see people deliberately going out into our communities knowing they have tested positive to COVID-19.

People have been asked to wear masks, yet try to find any reason not to, it is to these people I ask WHY? ‘JUST UNDERSTAND YOUR RIGHTS DO NOT SUPERCEDE ANY OTHER HUMAN’ There are some of us that are immune compromised, fighting unseen diseases, some have heart, kidney, liver, lung, and other organ conditions, plus cancers, again unseen, then there are our elderly that just don’t have the defences to fight this virus and are dying.

AND YET SOME OF YOU JUST DON’T CARE! Some of the vulnerable you may have as friends, you may not be aware of their medical conditions. Your parents and grandparents or for that matter anyone you may pass by in the street or shops, you are putting at risk.

I BEG OF YOU TO PLEASE BRING BACK THE AUSTRALIAN WAY OF CARING FOR YOUR FELLOW MAN! Everything is not going to be ‘alright mate’ if you don’t care, please think before you step outside without a mask or sanitiser.

There is absolutely no excuse to break the rules, we all know right from wrong.

So grow up, and act like the adults you purport to be, if you continue to flout the rules, more people will become ill and some will die.

Puppy... Cat... Dog... ( Child! Teen! Adult! )

One day it suddenly hit me and I realised that young children are like puppies... loyal and affectionate, and heaven forbid …..teenagers are like cats. Oh, It Is so much easier to be a dog owner.

You feed it, train it, boss it around. It puts its head on your knee and gazes at you as if you were a Rembrandt painting. It bounds indoors with enthusiasm when you call.

Then around age thirteen, your adoring little puppy turns into a big old cat. When you tell it to come inside, it looks amazed, as if wondering who died and put you in charge. Instead of sitting on your doorstep, it disappears. You won't see it again until it gets hungry ……. then it pauses on its sprint through the kitchen long enough to turn its nose up at whatever you're cooking.

When you reach out to ruffle its head, in that old affectionate gesture, it twists away from you, then gives you a blank stare, as if trying to remember where it has seen you before.

You, not realising that the dog is now a cat, think something must be desperately wrong with it. It seems so antisocial, so distant, sort of depressed. It absolutely refuses to go on family outings.

Since you're the one who raised it, taught it to fetch, stay, and sit on command, you are now assuming that you have done something wrong.

Flooded with guilt and fear you redouble your efforts to make your pet behave.

Only now you're dealing with a cat, so everything that worked before now produces the opposite of the desired result. Call it, and it runs away. Tell it to sit, and it jumps on the counter. The more you go toward it, wringing your hands, the more it moves away.

Instead of continuing to act like a dog owner, you now have to learn to behave like a cat owner. Put a dish of food near the door, and let it come to you. But remember that a cat still needs your help and your affection too. Sit still, and it will come, seeking that warm, comforting lap it has not entirely forgotten. Be there to open the door for it.

One day your grown-up child will walk into the kitchen, give you a big kiss and say, "You've been on your feet all day. Let me do those dishes for you."

After you pick yourself up off the floor, a feeling of relief floods through you when you realise your cat has morphed back into dog.

1. Place the rope on the floor to create a tightrope! Now you can play some easy balancing fun and even a gymnastic routine for older children! Stay on the rope!

2. Young children can play walking on the rope and older children can try balancing a book on your head and walking the rope with their eyes shut.

3. Tie the rope to a door knob so you can wiggle it up and down and gently and swing side to side for children to jump over the river and over the waves!

4. Swing the rope (children from 6 or so) and skip. Jump, Jump, Jump! Amazing for the brain and body!

Older children can go fast! My children liked these rhymes: Cowboy Joe from Mexico - how many km did he go...?

Limit Screen Time During Lockdown....

Coronavirus lockdown has caused our children to have increased screen time to normal. Hours normally spent on playdates, going out and holidaying have now turned into home isolation causing increased time in front of TV, video games, and Zoom meetings with friends. Before we know it, they have sat in front of screen all day during school holiday or online school.

All that screen time is not good for the little eyes. To ensure they maintain healthy eyes we have to design the new normal standard for our children. We have to ensure that they are at adequate distance and lighting from the screen as well as taking their regular breaks.

Symptoms such as tired eyes, frequent blinking or eye rubbing, and blurry vision are getting more common with increased screen time in children. Not only that outdoor time plays an important role in developing good vision for life; it will also ensure enough social interaction for healthy lifestyle for our children to also reduce risk of future mental health issues.

While practising social distancing, there are few simple ways to limit screen time:

ΠLimit and track your and your children's screen time; If you and your children are spending two solid hours on the device, try to reduce to one and a half hours a day and slowly reduce your screen time. You will be pleasantly surprised at how well you and your children use time outside screen time for something else that is more useful. A walk to your local park or going for bike ride or pick up a sport for the family to maintain 12

healthy balance life during pandemic is a great idea to stay well.

Take breaks from devices; Every 20 minutes take 20 seconds break. Ž Phone call rather than text messages.

Chances are your family member or friends will have better personal connection with you.

Do nothing; Simply close your eyes to relax and allow 30 minutes a day for you and your children to simply meditate and relax.

Research is showing that lockdown causes much mental health damage to us and our children. Children may or may not express their emotion and often have increased fear and anxiety during lockdown without being able to express how they feel, or they are fearful to express how they honestly feel. Having a “short break” to do nothing can help to reduce anxiety and negative feelings.

Easy Moist Apple Slice Ingredients: 2 cups of Self-raising flour 1 cup of sugar 1 egg, beaten 3 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and sliced 4oz (approx 150g) melted butter

Method: Line a slice tray with baking paper.

Mix all ingredients together with your hands until combined.

Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and bake at 180 degrees until cooked, approx 20-30 mins.

Allow to cool in tin on wire rack, slice into squares and enjoy.

Can eat warm with cream or icecream.

Tip: err on the light side of quantity of flour.

Note: Mix up the fruit just for fun, add a good handful of frozen raspberries or blueberries or to the apple mix, sultanas are good too!

Minestrone Soup Ingredients: 1 medium/large smoked hock 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1 large onion diced 1 leek diced 1/2 tsp chilli flakes (optional) 2-3 medium carrots diced 2-3 sticks celery diced 12 or more green beans chopped 1 can diced tomatoes 1 can cannellini or red kidney beans (optional) 1/2 bottle Passata 2 cups beef stock 1/2 tsp dried oregano, thyme and basil 2 bay leaves Salt & Pepper to taste Risoni Pasta

Method:

Fry garlic, chilli and onion in a little olive oil until soft Add vegetables & fry 2mins Add all other ingredients, bring to the boil then simmer for a minimum of 2 hours Remove hock, drain till cool enough to handle, remove rind and chop meat, place back into soup and heat.

Add pasta of choice, I use Risoni and cook it separately, I just place some in serving bowl and pour over hot soup.

Serve with Parmesan cheese and crusty bread. ENJOY

Note: Add any other vegetables you like or have in the fridge. If you the cook pasta separately it doesn’t thicken the soup too much, just add some to your bowl then add soup.

The Day I Quit Motherhood

I don't know about you, but COVID has really highlighted not only the mental load but the whole household load I was carrying as a mother. I was trying to be all thing to all people.

To my husband, my children, my extended family and in my work. I really had neglected myself. I have also let go of a lot of my rituals and self-care practices. I wanted to be strong about losing my work and the uncertainty of when I can go back. But the truth is, some days, it really gets me down. Last week, it finally all got to me and I knew things needed a bit of a shake up around here. I got mad and sad.

After I had spent 2 hours cooking dinner (I hate cooking but love providing nutrition to my family) and set the table up, no one was willing to join me for this feast I had put together.

Everyone was busy doing what they loved. I took it all personally and vowed not to cook dinner again. I quit being mum at 730pm and went to bed to sob it out. In reality, I was exhausted, and the rest and early night was much needed.

The boys would come in and ask me to do something for them, and I was firm in telling them to go ask their dad. I needed a break and they needed to honour that. The boys were surprisingly not upset as it also gave the opportunity to get stuff done for themselves.

And this is what I learnt after a good night sleep and some journaling.

eat or do anything else for that matter. It is my job though to teach them how to do it themselves and have the resources so that can do it. s It is not my responsibility to take care of anyone but myself. And I cannot expect anyone else to take care of me. By filling up my cup I teach my boys to do the same for them and to respect my needs. After all, we teach others how to treat us. s It is not my responsibility to make sure everyone is happy, and neither is it their responsibility to make me happy. That is all up to me, based on my perception of the events and the meaning I choose to put s It is not my responsibility to take on everyone else's tasks. I needed to delegate, ask for help better and make sure I raise boys who know how to go out and get things done for themselves.

And although some days I do not want to be a mummy or a wife. or have a mortgage and I just want to be totally free of any responsibility to anyone other than myself, I look at my sons' faces and their dad's, and I'm so in love, that fleeting moment of freedom is replaced with deep gratitude.

And those moment of quitting mummy-ing are cues to look at my cup which needs refilling and for me to re-assess my boundaries if needed.

Innocent conform to society norms.

I don't want my child to blurt out, "It's a lie!

Your parents are lying to you! There's no such thing as Santa.”

W

hen is a lie acceptable? Are there degrees of lying? Is it less of a lie if it is a "white lie"? Or is lying only plain old lying? What about telling your children that Santa exists? Or the Easter Bunny? Or the Tooth Fairy? And if you choose to do so, when do you tell them the truth? That you have indeed, lied to them.

My parents did not give me fairy tales or halftruths. We were poor. If I got a present, they made damn sure I knew that they had scraped and saved every dollar to get me that ONE present. That one item would be a necessity: no frivolous toy, no gift wrapping, no card. There was no illusion of some old jovial fat dude climbing down a chimney in the middle of the night to place a beautifully wrapped gift under a Christmas tree. No Easter Bunny was pooping chocolate eggs on our lawns. And the Tooth Fairy? I was lucky to see the dentist.

Maybe that is why I overcompensate as a parent. I want to give them the magic and fun that I did not get as a child. I want them to look back fondly at their childhood memories.

I will admit that a small part of me wants to 20

"So, the Tooth Fairy will come, take my tooth and give me a coin?" Mandy queries.

I cannot seem to look her in the eyes. "Yes, so I'm told.”

"What does she look like? How does she get my tooth if I am lying on the pillow? How much money will I get? What happens with the teeth?”

Oh boy.

My brain scrambles for answers. I do not recall seeing a "How to lie effectively to your child" section in the parenting manual I received from the maternal health nurse.

"Uh, no-one has seen the Tooth Fairy, so we don't know the mechanics or logistics," I reply.

"Also, you get ONE gold coin per tooth. That's all I know.”

White Lies....

Mandy contemplates my answers for a moment. "Mummy, do you give me presents as well as Santa or are you pretending to be Santa?”

I pause. She is at an age where her friends are probably discussing the rumours. This is the perfect opportunity to come clean, but then she is likely to ruin it for her little brother.

“No, Mummy and Daddy give you presents as well as Santa," I reluctantly reply."What about the Easter Bunny? Are you putting the eggs in the lawn for us to find?”

I feel the weight of her accusing stare. I shift uncomfortably. Mandy could become an

"Hmm." Mandy responds. She is onto me. The jig is probably up.

"If you have any further questions, ask your dad.

"I think I'll ask Ally tomorrow if she thinks the Tooth Fairy is real," Mandy casually says. "She knows everything."

Managing Colds During COVID-19

What should you do if you or your kids get a cold this winter?

As GP's we are managing this cold and flu season quite differently due to the pandemic.

As we all learn the new normal, we must be aware of what to do if anyone in our family becomes unwell this year.

Look out for symptoms of fevers, chills/sweats, cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath or loss of sense of smell/taste.

If anyone in your family gets ANY of these symptoms, however mild, I encourage you to contact your GP for advice, even if you would normally just wait it out. This INCLUDES children, babies & the elderly.

§ Your GP may not be able to see you at the clinic in person if you have any respiratory symptoms but they can assess quite a lot t h ro u g h t e l e h e a l t h a n d i f n e e d e d , arrangements for further examination/treatment can be made. § At t h e t i m e o f w r i t i n g , V i c t o r i a i s recommending COVID-19 testing for anyone with ANY respiratory symptoms so your GP will likely recommend you attend for a Covid swab. There are many testing centres your GP can direct you to and some have convenient drive through options. Result turnaround varies but can be as quick as 24 hours in many cases. § You MUST SELF ISOLATE while you are awaiting swab results/have symptoms. For 24

guidance on how to effectively self-isolate at home simply copy & paste this link into your browser: § https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/sites/default/f iles/documents/202002/Home%20Isolation %20Guidance%20%201%20Feb%202020.pdf § If someone else in your family gets symptoms soon after, they must go and get tested too, regardless of the original family member's swab result. § The unwell person must NOT return to work/school/day-care etc until all of their symptoms have resolved and at least 72 hours after the last fever, even if their swab result was negative. This is because: a) The swab is not 100% accurate and can occasionally miss a case of COVID-19 and b) If a non-COVID-19 respiratory illness through the community it can cause significant disruption as everyone who develops symptoms will have to get tested, selfisolate, miss work/school etc EVERY TIME they become unwell. It is in all of our best interests to avoid spreading any type of respiratory illness this season. Your GP can provide more specific advice for you.

Even with lockdown restrictions easing, the coronavirus is still present in our community and we need to stay vigilant. We must continue to practice physical distancing, cough/sneeze etiquette, frequent handwashing, stay home when unwell and get tested for even mild symptoms. Let us work together to stay healthy and keep each other well this winter.

Banana Bread with Madison

Ingredients 265g Self Raising Flour 40g Plain Flour 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon 140g Brown Sugar (ďŹ rmly packed) 2 Overripe Bananas (mashed) 2 eggs (lightly whisked) 125ml Skim Milk 50g Bu er (melted and cooled)

Method Step 1 - Preheat oven to 180C. Brush a loaf pan (11 x 21cm) with melted bu er. Line the base and the sides with non-s ck baking paper, allow to overhang.

Step 2 - Si the combined ours and cinnamon into a large bowl. S r in the sugar and make a well in the centre. Mash bananas in a medium bowl. add the eggs, milk, and melted bu er, and s r un l well combined. add the banana mixture to the our mixture and s r un l just combined. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface.

Step 3 - Bake in preheated oven for 45 - 50 minutes or un l a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and set aside in the pan for 5 minutes. Turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. Cut into slices to serve.

Rice Crispy Treats with Sienna

Ingredients 3 Tablespoons bu er 40 Marshmallows 6 cup Rice Bubbles Op onal - Mini Smar es to decorate Method Step 1 - Grease Tray.

Step 2 - In a large saucepan melt bu er over low heat. Add marshmallows and s r un l completely melted. Remove from heat.

(Parents help recommend) Step 3 - Place rice bubbles into a heat proof bowl and add melted mixture. S r un l well coated.

Step 4 - Scoop mixture into tray using a spatula or wooden spoon.

Step 5 - Decorate with Mini Smar es.

Step 6 - Place in the refrigerator to set. When set, cut into small squares.

Blank Canvas or Have you ever heard anyone say, “It's just his personality or it's just in her nature”? There is no doubt our children are unique little creatures, but are they born “pre-set” or do they develop into what we know as their individual character?

I remember as a young nurse assisting in giving newborn babies their first baths, and noting that some would lay there quietly looking wide-eyed but relaxed, whilst others would scream at the top of their lungs until they were red in the face. Obviously, each baby had an individual 'opinion' about being bathed! This could be explained using the term temperament.

“Temperament is an individual's characteristic level of emotional excitability or intensity and is typically recognised within the first few weeks after birth. It is often assumed to be an early indication of personality though personality combines temperament with experiences to shape lifelong traits”. www.study.com So, the belief is, that babies are born with at least coloured backgrounds (temperament) and that personality then develops over the top (within the first five years).

So, what does this mean to the parent? Importantly it means there are elements of your child's nature that he or she has been born with and you can't change them.

And secondly, that your child's complete personality, has been influenced by so many factors that you cannot take it on board as all your doing – neither thinking “all my fault” or “all my good work”.

Every parent who has two or more children is more than likely aware of the difference in temperament of their babies in the early stages, (and the different personalities that develop in each of their children).

But those early stages can be very difficult if your particular child has a certain mix of personality traits. The most commonly accepted personality traits are:

§ Extraversion § Agreeableness

§ Conscientiousness § Neuroticism, and § Openness

Most people have an understanding of extroverted and introverted. Basically the child that likes to be around other people rather than on their own is an extravert, and vice versa.

Agreeableness is related to cooperation and the desire for social harmony. Conscientiousness is about how much the child can control and direct their impulses. Neuroticism, refers to the tendency to experience negative feelings. And finally, openness distinguishes individuals that are imaginative and creative compared with down-to-earth and conventional.
