READING THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD After many years of practice in the area of paediatric optometry, I have realized that the requirements of a child's visual system - the way it functions, the demands placed upon it - differ from an adult in many ways. In early primary school, a child learns to read and write, so that they may utilize these skills to learn more effectively in the latter primary years. First we learn to read, then we read to learn. Reading well, reading efficiently, without undue strain, fatigue or blur, is not a given for many children. Eyes need to co-ordinate and focus, and the visual data needs then to be interpreted and processed by the brain. Children are our future. A thorough examination with a properly trained behavioural optometrist can ensure your child sees the world as best they can - nothing less is acceptable. Bookings for comprehensive eye examinations for children may be made with Dario, Optometrist.

September FIVE MINUTES WITH is with Jessica Jiang, director of Real Mandarin. Her passion is helping children learn Mandarin with fun and effectiveness. Jessica Jiang - q How did you start Real Mandarin? I had been teaching Mandarin to foreigners living in China since 2008. It wasn't until I moved to Melbourne and started to teach children here, did I realise that Australian children needed a Mandarin program that truly suited them. It took me a few years to create such a program by combining my second language teaching and early childhood education backgrounds. So it was about four years ago that Real Mandarin was born. q What makes Real Mandarin different from other Mandarin schools? Real Mandarin is different for its deep roots in second language teaching and early childhood education. Our teachers are all native Mandarin speakers and have been specially trained for teaching Mandarin to children. Our play-based curriculum can effectively nurture children's interest, confidence and passion in learning Mandarin. q What support do you give to parents to help their children learning Mandarin? We believe an effective partnership with parents is the key to children's success in Mandarin learning. We run various workshops and send regular newsletters to provide parents with Mandarin-learning knowledge and tips. We also offer original Mandarinlearning videos for children to watch at home to consolidate their learning even if they are not from a Chinese background. q What age do you suggest children to start learning Mandarin? We take in children from four years of age and above for our weekly Mandarin classes. At this age, most children would have begun their early childhood education experience already so they are able to participate in purposeful teaching activities. For younger children, we recommend our Mandarin Playgroup program for an early, informal language exposure. q Why do you think small group classes benefit young children more than private lessons? Sharing goals and progressing with other children brings fun to young Mandarin learners, and being able to have fun is vital for children to maintain motivation and overcome obstacles. At the same time, children need to practise interacting with different peers in Mandarin from the start as communication is the real driver of learning a language.
