READING THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD After many years of practice in the area of paediatric optometry, I have realized that the requirements of a child's visual system - the way it functions, the demands placed upon it - differ from an adult in many ways. In early primary school, a child learns to read and write, so that they may utilize these skills to learn more effectively in the latter primary years. First we learn to read, then we read to learn. Reading well, reading efficiently, without undue strain, fatigue or blur, is not a given for many children. Eyes need to co-ordinate and focus, and the visual data needs then to be interpreted and processed by the brain. Children are our future. A thorough examination with a properly trained behavioural optometrist can ensure your child sees the world as best they can - nothing less is acceptable. Bookings for comprehensive eye examinations for children may be made with Dario, Optometrist.

In this issue of FIVE MINUTES WITH we speak with Michele Williams, owner of one of Australia's most established and respected independent drama schools, Drama With A Difference. For twenty-five years, Michele has been the owner and manager of this highly successful drama school which has been the launching pad of many successful Australian actors. Aside from appealing to aspiring actors, the school runs recreational classes that build self-esteem and confidence, and is committed to providing classes for children of all levels and abilities. q How did you start with Drama With A Difference? I was originally one of the drama teachers for the organisation when it was owned by another woman. I was working as an actor and supplementing my income as a drama teacher. My employer had to move and offered to sell me the business. I took up her offer and began to grow the school. q You have been running Drama With A Difference on a full time basis for twentyfive years. How do you do it? I love what I am doing, but I also work as a professional actor. I can do all this because I have wonderful staff who work for me. I have a team of highly qualified, extremely talented, versatile and professional acting teachers who run various classes for me. q How does Drama With A Difference help young people? Drama With A Difference helps all young people because it encourages their creativity and spontaneity. Over the years, I have seen many young people become more confident as a result of attending our classes. We do a lot of work that encourages greater self-esteem. I have had countless parents make endless positive comments about the wonderful effect our classes have had on their children's lives. q Does Drama With A Difference encourage children to be actors? We do not encourage children to become actors, but if a talented, budding actor comes to our class and really wants to be an actor, we can help point them in the right direction. This school is the launching pad of many successful Australian actors, however we stress that we can never make any guarantees to anyone in this area. However, the main purpose of our drama classes is to create a safe and nurturing space for all young people to bring out their creativity, and to teach the skills of drama. We do not focus on the industry when we are running our classes. Our classes are held in a non-competitive environment where all children are treated equally, regardless of ability. q What is your advice on learning drama? My first advice is to go to a reputable drama school that has a long history. There are a lot of “fly by night”drama schools that come and go. I would also be extremely careful of any drama school that suggests they can help your child to become “famous”, or who promotes fame over the developmental skills that drama can offer. Remember that anyone can create an impressive, glossy website, but really read the content. The emphasis should always be on learning and on the benefit of drama for all children. 203 20 Shop Local and mention Your Child in Boroondara
