Editors Notice Board Hello and welcome to our September issue! This magazine marks my 1 year anniversary as Editor of Your Child in Banyule & Nillumbik. Wow that went quick!! I have learnt so much from the very start and have enjoyed every part of it. Highs and lows and everything in between. It's a juggle trying to balance family and work but I’m getting there. There is so much more to always learn and I’m looking forward to what this next year will bring! September is a great month - the start of Spring and Father’s Day on the 4th. In our Kids Corner we have some lovely answers to our question “It Makes Dad Happy When...? and we have a cute questionnaire for the kids to fill out and pop into a card - maybe something to put away and look back on in a few years. We have an article on the childrens entertainment duo Pevan and Sarah who have their album launch coming up on October 9th. Plus Interlaken Kindergarten in Rosanna will be celebrating 50 years!! They are calling on any past parents or students who may have memorabilia to share at their celebration on the 15th October. Plus with the school holidays fast approaching again we have included the School Holiday Programs running at your local library from 17th Sept - 2nd Oct. Plus we have a competition to win a copy of the book Lost My Name. The winner will have a book printed with their name inside so make sure you enter - all the details are on page 19 - Good Luck! I hope you enjoy our latest issue and remember to check out our advertisers as there may be something to do or see or somewhere to go that may interest your family or someone your know! To all the Dads out there - HAPPY FATHER’S DAY I hope you enjoy your special day! Have a great September and take care

Sam xo Thank you for taking Your Child into your home and please support local business

Pevan & Sarah's original hit “Christmas Roo Rock” featured amongst children's entertainment royalty on a compilation released by ABC for Kids. These cute as a button besties have worked hard to build their online presence and have released a collection of high impact music video clips that can be viewed on their You Tube channel.

Pevan & Sarah are Melbourne's hottest new music act for kids and are back with their second album 'The Tiger Tail'. A cuddly tiger with all the moves, paired with his best friend Sarah, the musical pocket-rocket, make for a highly energetic and engaging show that is not to be missed. After the release of their first album in 2014, this dynamic duo hit the ground running. They have performed all over Australia and experienced some career highlights including appearances at St Kilda Festival, Motor City Music Festival, Royal Children's Hospital, Luna Park and a residency on Hamilton Island. Sarah and Manny Kechayas, the masterminds behind the concept, are both music graduates of the Victorian College of the Arts and are now primary school teachers at a local school in Montmorency. Drawing on their musical backgrounds, classroom experiences & the motto “if a child can't learn the way we teach, let's teach the way a child can learn,” the talented couple wrote the collection of songs that have become pivotal in helping young students understand key lessons of life.

12

Their interactive and exciting live show is targeted at young children, however their music engages both the young and the young at heart. Friendship, respect, acceptance of others, cooperation and behaviour are all themes explored throughout their repertoire. For the music enthusiast, the rhythms and genres are as diverse as the subject matter, all written, performed and professionally produced by the Pevan & Sarah team. Pevan & Sarah enjoy engaging with the entourage of mini maestros who love to sing and dance with the vibrant pair whenever they hit the stage. Their music is upbeat, catchy and infectious, ensuring fun for the whole family at any event. Their second album will be officially released at a launch on th October 9 , 2016 at Eltham High School. Get your tickets now and support local music in your community. For more information, you can find them on Facebook or go to www.pevanandsarah.com

Interlaken Kindergarten Turns 50!! In October 2016, Interlaken Kindergarten in Rosanna will celebrate an impressive 50 years of operation. For half a century, this community kindergarten has nurtured and educated young children of Rosanna and surrounding suburbs through their high quality, inclusive and stimulating early learning programs. As those many children have grown, so has the kindergarten!

In 1966 when the kindergarten first opened, Australian society did not fully appreciate the significance of the learning taking place in kindergartens. Now, thanks to research we understand that a child's brain development is more significant in their first five years than at any other time of life. The Australian early childhood sector responded with the introduction of a national quality framework in 2012, designed to ensure children receive the best possible learning opportunities in these important early years. I n t e r l a ke n K i n d e r g a r t e n h a s e m b r a c e d contemporary research and practice, developing high quality learning programs that provides children with the opportunity to grow and learn through play. Qualified educators at Interlaken Kindergarten encourage each child to make choices

according to their interests and ideas which guide their learning journey. The centre is known for its strong educational program and emphasis on connecting with local community, celebrating family and cultural diversity and building awareness of environmental sustainability.

Most recently the kindergarten has undergone numerous enhancements including upgrading the outdoor play areas and expanding the service to cater for more three year o l d c h i l d re n . T h e s e enhancements will ensure that the kindergarten continues to provide high quality, innovative early learning programs for many more years to come. Interlaken Kindergarten educators, families and committee are proud of h ow t h e cent re h a s grown and continued to thrive for 50 years. “Reaching this milestone, truly is a testament to the high quality early learning programs delivered by the dedicated educators at this centre”, Pascale, parent of child in three year old group. “We are delighted to send our children to this centre because the programs are always stimulating and the environment is warm and welcoming.” David, parent of multiple children who have attended Interlaken Kindergarten.

On Saturday 15 October from 11am, the kindergarten will open its doors and warmly welcome the local community, past and current students, families and educators to attend a day of celebration, fun and reflection of the last 50 years. The celebration will honour generations of students who have attended the kindergarten, educators who have worked in the kindergarten and parents and community leaders who have been involved in the administration of Interlaken Kindergarten throughout its history. Interlaken Kindergarten has planned a very special day with various activities including: 타 Opening of the playground specifically designed for three year olds 타 Historical Photographic Display 타 Activities for families including an animal petting zoo, a magic show and a balloon artist 타 Sausage sizzle

The kindergarten is calling on past families and staff who may have historical memorabilia or photographs associated with the kindergarten to loan these items (or provide copies) so that they can be included in their Historical Photographic Display. It is expected that the historical display will be of great interest to many local residents and past students of the kindergarten. To loan or donate historical Interlaken Kindergarten memorabilia or past photos, please send an email and attachments to interlakenkinderevents@gmail.com All contributions will be greatly appreciated.
