Easter Witches in Sweden

Easter is celebrated in Christian communities across the world. However, not everyone celebrates in exactly the same way. Here are five Easter traditions from around the world.

Easter-Crime - In Norway, it is common to turn to mystery books and TV detective shows during the Easter period. This tradition, known as “Passkekrim” or “Easter-Crime” started because many new crime books are published between Holy Thursday and Easter Monday - a period of public holiday. Also, it is common for Norwegians to go on holiday during this period, often taking new books along with them.

Witch Costumes - In western Sweden, children dress up as witches to visit neighbours in a tradition similar to American trick or treat. The children are known as “Paskkarringar” (Easter hags) and carry Kite Flying - In Bermuda, people brooms and Easter cards during their visits. traditionally fly kites for Easter. Local History An Introduction to Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive meetings included talks by local people and covered topics in all of the areas within Hadleigh and Thundersley including “Cunning Murrell” by Bob Delderfield, “Thundersley” by David Waller and “Daws Heath Pictures” presented by Graham Cook.

The Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive was formed in 2010 in partnership with Essex County Council Libraries and The Essex Record Office. A community archive was already in existence for Canvey Island and Heritage Lottery funding was obtained for a further six archives in South East Essex. Together, these archives are known as the South East Essex Community Archive Network (SEECA). The archives are run by local people with an interest in their town. Thundersley had not originally been included in the six new archives but at an early meeting of the Hadleigh Community Archive it was agreed that Thundersley, including Daws Heath, should be incorporated with Hadleigh. From late 2010 through to early 2011, regular meetings were held in Hadleigh Library to generate interest in the community archive. Several of these

You can also meet representatives of the Hadleigh & Thundersley Archive to chat about your memories and view the website. Drop in sessions are held on the 1st Wednesday of every month at Hadleigh Old Fire Station between 2pm and 3pm and on the 2nd Saturday of each month at Hadleigh Library between 10.30am and 12noon. You can take your old photos, documents, newspaper cuttings or other memorabilia along to these sessions for scanning.

Healthy Living Are you out of balance? smoothly! I talk a lot about balance in my work. When I give reflexology, the feet represent all of you so a treatment of both feet is like having a gentle workout all over. This seems to point out to your brain what it may be bypassing and forgotten and gives your body a chance to heal and get itself back in equilibrium.

Recently I’ve had a couple of clients with really terrible problems with balance which had totally disrupted their lives for many months or years. In my work, no matter what the doctor has diagnosed I ask “what’s been going on in their lives recently” and then I listen.

When I use Bowen technique, I talk about us being like a tent. Life’s stresses have caused your guy ropes to become uneven. Bowen gently works to get your guy ropes (core muscles) back in balance so you feel straighter, less tied in knots, able to stand tall again and look the world in the face! I often send patients home with a blend of essential oils to help them return to relaxation anytime they choose.

So, what can you do? I advocate what I call guilt free “brain break.” This is time out for you away from the “musts” and “shoulds” of life. Think about what you used to enjoy as a I always hear of some long term stress. It’s child. April in History 7th April 1749 On this day, Dick Turpin - the most infamous highwayman in the world - was hanged at the Tyburn, which is on the modern day York Race Course otherwise known as the Knavesmire. Dick Turpin was a butcher’s son, born in Hempstead, Essex in 1705. He was also a violent highwayman who was executed in York, after being charged for murder. Almost a hundred years after his death, he became the subject of legend. Victorian author Harrison Ainsworth wrote stories about Turpin, presenting him as a fearless and gentlemanly hero. He also virtually invented the most famous episode in Turpin legend: Turpin’s non-stop ride from London to York on his faithful mare, Black Bess, in less than 24 hours. Ainsworth’s fiction was soon mistaken for fact, spawning a host of local legends.

15th April 1912 In the early hours of this morning - 100 years ago - the RMS Titanic sank. Built in Belfast by The White Star Line, the Titanic was the second of three ships and was the largest and most luxurious ship at the time. She measured 269 metres by 28 metres and was meant to be unsinkable! 30

On April 10 1912 the Titanic set sail from Southampton to New York carrying 900 crew and 1316 passengers. The captain of the ship was Edward John Smith who was a very experienced sailor. The passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world as well as emigrants from Ireland, Scandinavia and other places who were looking to start a new life in America. For the first three days of her voyage, the Titanic sailed through calm waters but as she neared Canada on the fourth day, the waters turned icy. After steaming too fast, the Titanic scraped the side of an iceberg which made a huge hole in the side. Less than 3 hours later, the Titanic plunged to the bottom of the sea. As the ship was meant to be “unsinkable,” it carried only 20 lifeboats - enough for about half the passengers and crew. Many people didn’t realise the danger they were in, again thinking the ship to be unsinkable, and refused to get onto the lifeboats. It took three hours for the ship to sink with over 1000 still on board. The RMS Carpathia rescued 710 survivors from the lifeboats a few hours later and transported them to their intended destination in New York. The wreck of the Titanic is still on the seabed, gradually disintegrating at a depth of 12,415 feet (3,784 m).
