Heleniums My Favourite Plant By Martin Blow The great garden writer Christopher Lloyd, when asked what his favourite flower was, replied, “the one I’m looking at now”. It’s that way with me with heleniums; all are beautiful in their own right, all are equally easy to grow and all do a great job in the border, be it a 15-inch (38cm) edger to a 6-footer (180cm) at the back. Heleniums come in all shades and variations of yellow, orange and red. The only thing to remember is that heleniums need good sunlight to obtain the best colours. Yellow varieties will perform in some shade, but the reds need 3 or 4 hours of good sunlight to colour up properly. Left in the shade they will be pale orange and yellow. The common name, “Sneezeweed”, comes from the use of dried and powdered leaves as medicinal snuff to cure colds and bronchitis. Don’t try this at home! Heleniums are toxic and harmful if ingested. In Germany, they are called “Sonnenbraut” – “Sun Brides”, far more romantic! All heleniums are a great source of nectar for bees and butterflies which will flock to the flowers with glee. Gardeners often think of heleniums as late-flowering, adding colour to the August and September garden, but with careful selection of varieties and regular dead heading and watering, you can have heleniums in bloom from mid-June until the beginning of November without having to resort to forcing plants in a greenhouse. The short varieties are usually earlier to flower and with dead heading will go on longest. Probably the best is the 2ft (60cm) tall Mardi Gras with its jolly masses of flower and a strong constitution. Also highly recommended is the bright red Red Army

10 |

and Fata Morgana, a lovely variety with upswept petals in apricot with orange undersides making a beautiful two-toned effect in the garden. Mid height heleniums (3ft / 60cm tall) are great for the middle or back of borders (depending on the size of border). The most popular is Sahin’s Early Flowerer but a better choice is the magnificent El Dorado with very large golden yellow flowers. Tall varieties (4-6ft / 120-180cm) might need a stake in an exposed site but I rarely need to resort to this as the stems are very thick and strong. Amber is the best of newer varieties with masses of flower on upright plants. You can’t go wrong with the 4-5ft old variety Kanaria with its canary yellow flowers. For something showier the picotee-edged flowers of Vicky stand out well at the back of the border. Heleniums mix well with lots of garden plants. I particularly like them with grasses in late summer – short moor grasses (molinia) or taller Silver Grass (miscanthus) and Feather Grass (pennisetum). Monarda (bergamot) and phlox make great companions as all require similar growing conditions. There are a few simple rules to follow to get the best out of heleniums: water whenever dry even in spring or autumn; deadhead short varieties regularly; cut down the stems to just above the ground in winter and only divide or move them in spring not autumn. Follow these and heleniums should come back each year to brighten up your summer and autumn garden. Scams Awareness Be Safe Online Scams come in many forms, face to face, over the phone, by post and online, but online scams represent the fastest growing form of scams in recent years. We are all being encouraged to shop, bank and interact socially online but many people are uncomfortable doing so or not confident in their online security. Below are some simple tips for spotting online scams. Spot online scams If you think someone might be trying to scam you online, don’t: • give them any personal information, like bank details, computer passwords or PIN numbers • reply to their email or click on any links • download any attachments or files in emails • send them any money or buy anything • ring any numbers in emails If you’ve lost money because of a scam, you can report it (see below). Know the warning signs Be careful if an offer: • comes out of the blue or from someone you don’t know • sounds out of the ordinary - like you’ve won the lottery, or you’ve been invited to invest in an ‘amazing’ scheme and keep it a secret • asks you to pay for something in advance - especially by bank transfer • asks you for personal information - like your bank details, computer passwords or PIN numbers • pressures you into buying something or making a decision quickly - a trustworthy company will be happy to wait • asks you to phone an expensive number - these start with 070, 084, 087, 090, 091 or 098 Spot a fake email or website Scam emails ask you for personal information like passwords or bank details to get money; called ‘phishing’. They often look real, as if from a bank or building society, but remember that your bank will never ask you to confirm personal details by clicking on an email link. If you’re not sure if it’s a scam, check: • the email or website address - if it’s a scam, it might have

20 |

a strange address or come from a free email provider like Gmail • for spelling mistakes - trustworthy websites are less likely to have them • if the website starts with https:// - this means the information you send on the website is secure, but the website could still be a scam • if the website has a green padlock in the website address bar - this means the information you send on the site is private If you think you’re being scammed Don’t click on anything and leave the website. You might want to keep the email as evidence in case you report the scam. If you’ve had an email that looks like it’s from your bank, contact your bank directly using the number on your card. You can also log into your account on their website - use Google to find the real one. You can also block the email sender or mark an email as ‘spam’ or ‘junk’ - this means you won’t see them in your inbox. Check your email provider’s help section for instructions on how to do this. Further help Call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 if you need advice or to report a scam. Get expert advice on being safe online from Get Safe Online at For up-to-date information on common scams, and how to report them, contact Action Fraud at or call 0300 123 2040. Finally, if you want to take the fight against scammers further consider joining the ‘friends against scams’ campaign. This is a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative. Seventies Chic By Katherine Sorrell Get your groove on – it’s back to the Seventies! But this time around orange pine and avocado bathrooms are banned, in favour of good-looking furnishings, bold patterns and cool accessories.

Seventies style is all about attitude. Bright and bold, it’s easy to introduce, often quite affordable and, because the furnishings are so striking, less is definitely more – a handful of well-chosen pieces can be carefully integrated into a modern scheme, adding an on-trend edge without becoming overpowering.

Made to measure Seventies Flower Oval roman blinds by Orla Kiely, Blinds 2go: 0800 862 0464;

Start with the distinctive Seventies colour palette – in general colours were quite earthy and muddy, from mustard and ochre to camel, olive and chocolate. Like the patterns of the time – geometrics such as circles within squares, paisleys and simple florals – these strong shades are best employed in small doses, mitigated by pale or neutral backgrounds. Think small touches such as a cushion or two, a drum lampshade, some glassware and ceramics and a framed poster on your wall, for example. Typical of this decade is an element of comforting homespun, home-made style, hence the prevalence of handicrafts such as patchwork, weaving and macramé. Why not take a course, or teach yourself from books or online videos, and make your own, personalised pieces? Failing that, Etsy, Folksy and other online marketplaces have beautiful (and affordable) craft pieces. Include some wooden and, especially, rattan furnishings in the form of blocky furniture made of pine or covered in velvet or corduroy, and cane elements such as headboards, mirror frames and baskets. Try car boot sales, auctions or charity shops, though choose better quality items to create the right impression. A creamcoloured shagpile rug is another option and can be subtly updated with a Berber-style criss-cross pattern.

Retro Orla Kiely enamel teapot, £55, Andshine: 07765 530 607; Macramé wall hanging, £75, Cox & Cox: 0330 333 2123;

Houseplants are important, and the bigger the better – no Seventies home was complete without a Swiss cheese plant and a spider plant in a handmade hanger. Complete the mix with some rustic kitchenware, a touch of vintage Laura Ashley, and perhaps even a beanbag or Moroccan pouffe. Silver and orange lava lamp, £35, Red Candy: 0121 224 7728;

Lava Lamps Edward Craven-Walker (1918-2000) was a great British inventor, entrepreneur and eccentric. The story goes that he was in a pub one night when he noticed a peculiar egg timer, made from a cocktail shaker, old tins and wax, and filled with liquid. Fascinated, he bought the contraption and decided to try to improve on its design. It took 15 years, but in 1963 the Astro Lamp was launched and became an instant hit, appearing in TV programmes including The Prisoner, Doctor Who and The Avengers. Lava lamps came in a range of designs and were ubiquitous until the late Seventies and Eighties; they were revived in the Nineties and have since become popular again – a retro classic that’s perfectly suited to a 21st century lifestyle.

Debra June & The Rockin’ Tunes, a dynamic six piece Rock n Roll band featuring Sax, Boogie Woogie piano, Double Bass, Guitars and Drums with male & female vocals and harmonies, will be entertaining throughout the day. The band will be performing sensational songs from the 1950’s with music from DJ Howling Wolf in between sets! Anker Radio will also have stations throughout the town keeping all spectators up to date with announcements and interviewing vehicle owners. Magic Matt Redmond will also be entertaining families with stilt walking, a magic show and balloon modelling! Sponsors of the event so far include Weston Hall, with each participant of the Static Display & Car Rally receiving a voucher for a free individual pizza. The event is open to all classic and sports cars, motorbikes and commercial vehicles.

Barnardo’s Supported Lodgings Service Do you have a spare room? Could you relate to young people aged 16 - 25? Could you help them with budgeting,

cooking and other independence skills? Could you encourage them in education, employment or training?

Coventry Fashion Brand Started with a Dream

Why not make the most of your spare room and become a Supported Lodgings Provider for Coventry or Warwickshire young people? Supported Lodgings provide young people leaving care with safe supported places to live in the homes of local people.

For founder and owner of independent fashion brand Bottle Blonde Studios, Chloe Hollingsworth, it’s been quite a journey since she set up the brand back in 2016.

Supported Lodgings Providers receive approximately £150 per week to support a young person on their journey to independence. Barnardo’s will offer you: • On-going support and supervision • Full training • Opportunities to develop your skills working with young people To find out more about Barnardo’s (Midlands) Supported Lodgings call 024 7637 2596 or email:

Coventry University graduate, Chloe Hollingsworth, had a dream one night that she made a jacket, entirely out of tinsel, she knew from there she had to turn her dream into a reality and immediately started drawing out the design to make it. Chloe started the brand in her bedroom and as more and more people became aware of the brand and her unique and fun designs, she knew she couldn’t do it alone, so enlisted the help of fashion student interns at Coventry University. Around this time, the brand received a large order from a group of backing

dancers on Britain’s Got Talent, and that’s when Chloe realised she was on to something big, and the rest is history. Fast forward 3 years and the brand now has its own studio in the City, they’ve had to move several times to bigger studios to keep up the constant flow of orders the brand now receives on a daily basis, usually from global destinations, particularly from Australia and America which is a regular distribution channel for the brand. Along with this, the brand have made customised jackets and outfits for celebrities, including Jessie J and most recently were asked to create one for Lady Gaga, and although she didn’t wear the design, just being asked by her team was a big enough achievement for Chloe. Chloe said, “Getting asked by Gaga’s team to create a jacket just for her was such a big deal for myself and the brand, especially considering how much of a fan girl I am! Although she didn’t wear it in the end, just getting asked was a huge honour for myself and the team.”

a pure example of just what can be achieved with a dream, some tinsel, and a lot of hard work. Instagram

We want to hear your local good news stories! The deadline for entry in our August / September edition is 8th July, please email your good news stories to or speak to our family friendly team on 024 7646 8078. Don’t delay, pass on your local good news today!

The brand is now sold on multiple platforms, including We Koko, Silk Fred and Asos Marketplace, and they previously had a collection stocked in Topshop Oxford Circus. For a business that began in Chloe’s bedroom only 3 years ago, the brand has had multiple successes and continues to grow and develop. When starting the brand Chloe had no money whatsoever, and the business was originally setup with the help of the Princes Trust, a charity that she still works with today and is

Sensational Summer Skin By Kate Duggan Finding the right sun lotion for your skin isn’t easy if you have sensitive skin. Some are too greasy or leave a white residue, and others can trigger prickly heat or eczema.

I’ve tried a lot of lotions in my quest and Green People’s Scent Free Sun Lotion (£22.50) is one of the best I’ve found so far. It’s gentle on skin, non-greasy, rubs in easily and contains chamomile, green tea and aloe vera to soothe and refresh skin. It’s also reef-safe and 30p from each sale is donated to the Marine Conservation Society. With an SPF of 30, it’ll do fine for my Cornwall holiday this year, although I might swap to Jason Sunbrellas Family Sun Block SPF45 in the unlikely event I get invited to somewhere a bit more tropical. See Personally, I quite like my freckles. However, I’m not that keen on other areas of uneven pigmentation. Epionce’s MelanoLyte TX (£81) is a daily exfoliating treatment that’s clinically proven to reduce hyperpigmentation problems, such as melasma (dark, blotchy patches often linked to pregnancy) and sun spots. It also helps to remove dead skin cells so leaves skin feeling softer. And it does it all without any flaking or irritation. Epionce have swapped harsh bleaching agents like hydroquinone for gentler natural ingredients like liquorice root and mallow. My skin felt smoother and looked brighter and more even in just a couple of weeks. For best results, wait five minutes after applying before following with your usual moisturiser or the MelanoLyte Pigment Perfection Serum (£94.50). See I’m loving No 7’s new HydraLuminous Moisturising Foundation (£15) and Concealer (£14). The foundation is somewhere between a tinted moisturiser and a traditional foundation. It blends easily, lasts all day, offers great coverage and

34 |

doesn’t feel too heavy. I don’t wear make-up every day and have forgotten to remove this one several times because the lightweight formula means I can’t feel I’m wearing it. As an added bonus, the foundation contains vitamins and antioxidants to nourish skin throughout the day. With twelve shades to choose from, it’s easy to find one that matches your skin tone, see The No 7 HydraLuminous Dark Circle Concealer comes in eight shades. While it’s specifically designed to target dark circles under the eyes, it also does a good job of covering redness and light scars. The concealer comes in a twistable pen topped with a sponge applicator. Just twist to release the concealer and then dab on to skin. I blend by tapping the area with my ring finger, but you can use the sponge if you prefer. I’ve taken to keeping some make-up wipes at the side of my bed for those evenings I forget to remove my make-up. At the moment, I’m using Image Skincare’s I BEAUTY Refreshing Facial Wipes (£12.40). They make short work of foundation, mascara and eyeshadow, and the added aloe vera leaves skin feeling refreshed. They’re also biodegradable (although, as with all wipes, they should never be flushed), see

Vegetable and Chilli Noodle Bowls

1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp grated root ginger finely 1 red chilli pepper, deseeded and chopped 2 carrots, peeled and diced ½ aubergine, diced 1 small courgette, diced 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced d 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and dice 300ml hot vegetable stock 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 250g pack soba noodles 1-2 tsp sesame seeds Coriander sprigs, to garnish

Quick Tip 38 |

This is a quick vegetarian supper packed with flavour! Soba noodles are Oriental noodles made from buckwheat flour. You’ll find them in most large supermarkets but if unavailable, use egg or rice noodles instead. Makes 4 Ready in 30 minutes 1 Heat the vegetable oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until tender and fragrant. 2 Add the carrots, aubergine, courgette and peppers and fry over a medium heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour in the stock and simmer for a further 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are just tender. 3 Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the pack instructions. Drain well and toss into the vegetables along with the soy sauce and sesame oil. Divide between four warmed bowls and served sprinkled with sesame seeds and garnished with coriander sprigs.

For a more substantial supper top the bowls of vegetables and noodles with slices of grilled or pan-fried firm tofu or add some stir-fried prawns.

Steve’s Reply: The best way to stop material finding its way between the rubber and the windows is to try not to park under trees as this is where most of this type of material comes from. To remove it you will need a small stiff brush. When you wash your car soak the area well and run the brush along the rubber around the window, this should remove any material that’s there. Then give the area a good rinse to remove any residue. Congratulations Mark, Steve Mills will soon be on his way to provide you with your FREE executive car valet!
