Consumers and businesses can now verify online, anytime, that the businesses they deal with are licensed or registered with the Government of Saskatchewan for purposes of the Provincial Sales Tax (PST). “Finance Ministry staff regularly field inquiries from individual consumers and businesses wondering if a certain business is registered for PST,” Finance Minister Ken Krawetz says. “This new online tool allows consumers and businesses to check that very quickly, and will also help businesses operating in Saskatchewan ensure that the businesses they deal with are operating within the rules.” All businesses operating in Saskatchewan are required to be licensed or registered with the Ministry of Finance for PST purposes. Saskatchewan is one of the first provinces to provide this 24-hour service and the new online registry, located at www.skpstregistry.gov.sk.ca, and is searchable by business name. For convenience, the online database also accepts partial name searches. In addition to the new online registry helping individuals confirm the

businesses that they are purchasing from are registered for PST purposes, the new registry will be useful to contractors who are responsible for ensuring their subcontractors are registered with the government for PST purposes. Wholesalers will also be able to use the new registry to verify that the retailers they sell to are licensed by the government, and therefore allowed to purchase goods PST free (the PST would be charged by the retailer on the final sale of those goods to consumers). “This new registry is the latest in a series of initiatives by the Ministry of Finance aimed at helping Saskatchewan taxpayers,” Krawetz says. “Earlier this year, we upgraded our online tax filing system with a number of enhancements that makes filing easier for clients.” Upgrades to the Saskatchewan Electronic Tax Service (SETS) included the ability to add attachments to tax submissions, as well the implementation of same-day corrections to tax filings and email reminders prior to the due date of tax returns. What are digestive enzymes and what do they do? Enzymes are specialized proteins in the body that cause biological reactions to occur. Enzymes are the workers in the body. Without enzymes, nothing happens, even though your body has all the raw ingredients. Enzymes are required, to get the job done! There are many types of enzymes. Each one has a specific function. Digestive enzymes help break down food. Different types of digestive enzymes break down different types of foods. Where do enzymes come from and where do they go? Enzymes exist in all raw foods. We can also produce enzymes from amino acids. The more raw foods we eat, the less digestive enzymes our bodies need to produce. We can also take digestive enzyme supplements, which come from plants, animals or microorganisms. Cooking and other types of food processing destroy enzyme activity. Our bodies recycle digestive enzymes until they wear out. When they eventually wear out, other enzymes break them down. Why would we supplement with digestive enzymes?

Good digestion is required for good health. Enzyme supplements are a concentrated form of food enzymes. Digestive enzymes can benefit almost everyone, especially those who eat a lot of cooked or processed foods. Enzymes may reduce or eliminate symptoms of poor digestion, such as bloating, excess gas and heaviness. If you have general digestion problems, leaky gut, inflammation in the gut, yeast overgrowth, gluten sensitivity or other conditions that cause incompletely digested food or poor absorption, digestive enzymes could be of great

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca benefit to you. How much do we need to take to benefit from digestive enzymes? The dose of enzymes will depend on the amount and type of food eaten. It also depends on the specific formulation and on the individual’s need. Generally speaking, the larger the meal, the greater number of digestive enzymes should be taken. When is the best time to take digestive enzymes? They are best taken with the first few bites of food, or just before you eat. If you forget, you may still take them during the meal or even at the end of the meal. Food stays in the stomach for up to 90 minutes. Enzymes work on contact with food. Can digestive enzymes replace a restrictive diet? Many (but not all) people find that they can reintroduce most foods by taking the appropriate enzymes for the food type. If you have a true allergy to a specific food, you should still avoid it. Many people find that they no longer need to follow a restrictive diet, when they take the right type and amount of enzymes for their diet. In closing, keep in mind that the goal of taking a digestive enzyme supplement is to support digestion. We want to ensure the complete breakdown of the food we are eating, so that undigested food particles do not cause problems in the body. At the

same time, we can increase the availability of our nutrients by regularly taking digestive enzymes or whole food supplements that contain concentrated sources of enzymes. In order to celebrate my PhD graduation, I

Ag scholarship announced Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart recently announced the fourth annual Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship. “With a growing global demand for food comes a high demand for young people of all backgrounds to grow, process and market that food,” Stewart says. “Young people should be excited about a future in agriculture and this scholarship gives applicants a chance to explore this thriving industry.”

One winning scholarship valued at $4,000 and three runner-up scholarships valued at $2,000 each will be awarded to students in Grade 12 and recent graduates entering agriculture-related post-secondary studies in 2014. Those interested in the scholarship must produce a three minute creative video or write a well-researched, factbased 1,000 word essay that showcases one of four themes: agriculture solutions for a growing

world, farmers and ranchers as environmental stewards, safe food that is responsibly produced or agriculture as a modern, forward-looking industry. Applications will be accepted until March 1, 2014. Winning submissions will be posted on the ministry website in the spring. For more information on the Saskatchewan Agriculture Student Scholarship, visit www. agriculture.gov.sk.ca/ scholarship.

August earnings second highest Average weekly earnings in Saskatchewan during the month of August were $955, second highest among the provinces behind Alberta. “Higher wages indicate the on-going strength of our labour market and economic success,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. According to a report released by Statistics Canada today, earnings in Saskatchewan were up by 1.7 per cent

on a year-over-year basis, the third highest increase in the nation. “More people than ever before are living and working in Saskatchewan,” Boyd says. “We are taking meaningful steps to make sure this economic momentum continues in a manner that will benefit our businesses and communities, and above all, benefit the people who call this place home.”

A person’s nickname need not be unforgettable Ed, my neighbor next door, has recently renamed me, Treadless Rev. During the last month I have been in and out of our house in my clerical shirt. It will continue for the next few months as I will be doing pastoral work at area congregations until new pastors get relocated. Ed claims that anyone can see from my bald head that there is no tread left on me. He is certain that the congregations have a need to hurry up and get pastors with some decent tread on them. Ed claims that, by my age, my sermons are paper thin and flat. His opinion is that a person can’t stop on old treadbare tires, and old pastors can’t be trusted to stop preaching, after five minutes. Five minutes are Ed’s absolute limit for sermon length. I told Ed that he needed a better nickname for me. Of course, Ed wanted to know how I was an authority on nicknames. I said that a nickname should be unforgettable like: OneEyed Mike, Blasphemous Bill, Pious Pete, Dangerous Dan McGrew, HardLuck Henry, Barb-Wire Bill and Lip-Stick Liz. Ed accused me of just making up such nicknames. I said that I had borrowed them from the poems of Robert Service. Ed said that since the nicknames were in poems, I’m the only one that ever heard of them. I told him no one will remember Tread-less Rev. That is pretty much where we parted company with us both content to disagree with each other and remain at an impasse. Ed and I are often at an impasse. Thankfully our differences of opinions aren’t serious. Unfortunately, life is often at an impasse about opinions and actions that do matter greatly. Folks can have important matters to be dealt with. They

Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com may need an authority greater than themselves to declare who is right and who is wrong. Courts with judges are needed to break the impasse that separates two people. Judges need to pronounce a verdict, so that, folks can find justice and a resolve to a situation that is troubling them. In the Bible, Jesus tells of a widow who kept coming to a judge asking the judge to give her justice against her adversary. For a while, the judge refused to give justice on behalf of the widow. The judge

neither feared God nor respected man. After a while, the judge decided he would give the widow justice only because he did not want the widow to keep bothering him with her case. Jesus used the story to compare the difference between an uncaring judge and our righteous God in heaven when it comes to prayer. When we cry out to God, he will quickly give us justice as his own elect. Jesus wanted everyone to know we ought always to pray and not lose heart.

With an uncaring judge, the widow’s only hope was to beat the judge down with her continual coming to him for justice. Our

God is willing and ready to answer our prayers speedily. We will get an answer from God that reflects his will for us. He will give

us the right answer to our prayer according to his exacting timetable. That is why we always pray without losing heart.
