site location: battery park, Manhattan, NYC function: elementary school; grades 1-5 A design derived through investigations of a voronoi pattern. The aim is to achieve a fortress-like building which functions as an elementary school through the use of brutalist concept; specifically the unity of various forms into one cohesive form. The main idea is to create oppurtunities for classrooms to extend beyond the confines of the indoors and into the outdoors (batter park). 1st floor classrooms have direct access to the outdoors allowing for an extension of the school cirriculum into the outdoors (e.g. gardening classes). This is also the case on the 2nd floor which features a terrace which overlooks the waterfront. Classrooms are arranged in a row to create a sense of anticipation when a student moves to a mor specialised program (art class for example).
