GROWTH INSIGHTS

In celebration of all things Fast Growth 50, we wanted to share the successes of this year’s achievers. All companies included this year demonstrated an impressive impact on the Welsh economy in terms of both wealth creation and employment. With a collective turnover of £492m in 2012, the qualifying top 50 employed over 5,000 people. With the UK economic output rising by 0.8% between July and September, we thought we’d take tips from the best of the best. We picked up the award of fastest growing recruitment service, so we thought we’d take a look at some of the other entries and what makes them tick.....

ROY ALLKIN

The company has grown substantially year on year, predominantly by reinvesting profits to ensure future growth, and investing over £200,000 in the last three years in staff

training. Wolfestone invested heavily in developing industry- leading technology and new services such as voiceovers and telephone interpreting. While competitors in the industry were making cuts, the company continued to invest, leading to improved service levels, higher quality and winning major new clients such as Coca-Cola Enterprises and General Electric.

BRIAN STOKES ITCS

It’s been revealed that Cardiff is the best UK city for young adults because of its low cost of living, good job opportunities and decent wages. Speaking to more than 2,000 18 to 30 year olds from across the UK. Cardiff beat London, Edinburgh and Belfast to the number one spot. Having been based in Cardiff for the past 5 years, we’re delighted with the results of a recent poll that has discovered that 7 out of 10 in Cardiff said they loved their job and are happy with their work-life balance!

MAKE A NOISE: USE MARKETING TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS Whether you sell to consumers or other businesses, it’s essential to identify your potential customers and go after them. Strategic marketing, advertising and PR plans make small businesses into high rollers. Ideas are good but viable ideas are great. How do you determine the difference between a great-sounding idea and a truly great & profitable idea? Know your market. It can be easier and less expensive than you imagine. The key is to look past

market potential and determine whether a need exists, and whether you can profitably meet that need. Know Your Competition. Every business has competitors. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your competition is critical to business survival and success. You don’t have to hire a professional to understand your competition, just make sure you assess the competition thoroughly, methodically, and regularly, and see what they are doing differently.

TECHSPOTTERS: HUMMINGBIRD

ONES TO WATCH

The new algorithm, codenamed Hummingbird, is the first major upgrade for three years. It has already been in use for about a month, and affects about 90% of Google searches. At a presentation on Thursday, the search giant was short on specifics but said Hummingbird is especially useful for longer and more complex queries.

Matcha Labs

Google stressed that a new algorithm is important as users expect more natural and conversational interactions with a search engine – for example, using their voice to speak requests into mobile phones, smart watches and other wearable technology.

Rant Media

Hummingbird is focused more on ranking information based on a more intelligent understanding of search requests, unlike its predecessor, Caffeine, which was targeted at better indexing of websites. It is more capable of understanding concepts and the relationships between them rather than simply words, which leads to more fluid interactions. In that sense, it is an extension of Google’s “Knowledge Graph” concept introduced last year aimed at making interactions more human. In one example, shown at the presentation, a Google executive showed off a voice search through her mobile phone, asking for pictures of the Eiffel Tower. After the pictures appeared, she then asked how tall it was. After Google correctly spoke back the correct answer, she then asked “show me pictures of the construction” – at which point a list of images appeared.

www.matchalabs.com

Cardiff based web design, web development and mobile development company have grown from strength to strength in the past two years. Working with some well known brands, these are certainly ones to keep an eye on!

www.rantmedia.com However, one search expert cautioned that it was too early to determine Hummingbird’s impact. “For me this is more of a coming out party, rather than making me think ‘wow’, said Danny Sullivan, founder of Search Engine Land. “If you’ve been watching this space, you’d have already seen how they’ve integrated it into the [predictive search app] Google Now and conversational search. “To know that they’ve put this technology further into their index may have some big payoffs but we’ll just have to see how it plays out,” Mr Sullivan said. The news was announced at an intimate press event at the Silicon Valley garage where founders Sergei Brin and Larry Page worked on the launch of the search engine, which is fifteen years old on Friday.

Pavan Arora

Rant Media is pretty cool and is the premier mobile apps agency in Wales. They describe themselves as having “ a unique combination of technical-über-excellence, creativity, character, flair and experience.”

USING SOCIAL MEDIA Having an online presence is important for the success of many small businesses today. How many times have you heard of a brand, searched them online with no luck? What is your view of the company? Are you sceptical of its creditability? It lets potential customers know you exist and social media is a great way to drive traffic to your site.

Google +. Is it the most effective content marketing platform? It’s recently been called a “sharing” platform, which is pretty accurate. Social networks ultimately are powered by people, and with over 500 million users, you’d be a fool to ignore it. There’s a good chance the people you’re trying to reach will be on Google+.

With so many options available at the click of a mouse, how do you know what's right for your business. Depending on what your company does, online media is a sure fire way of drawing attention to your brand. Though Facebook needs no introduction, it’s sometimes overlooked as a tool of business growth.

We all have an account, but how many of us use it effectively? When you’re trying to figure out a way to pitch a prospect, LinkedIn is a good place to start. We use it to research prospects before meeting or contacting them, it’s a good way to gain a thorough understanding and knowledge to impress. If you’re trying to establish yourself in your industry, whether a new business or old, ‘Questions and Answers’ is a great way to demonstrate your expertise without being a self-promoter. If your answer is selected as the best, it will appear in your profile, which adds another layer of credibility.

Content is king, everybody says so. It’s somewhat true, but without community, it’s pretty useless. It’s important to continually add value and engagement to your page. While content will help you to do that, sometimes good content is wasted and ineffective if you don’t have a supportive community to broadcast to (and to broadcast for you) Join a conversation. Tweet chats are excellent for networking and they can act as a worthwhile tool for lead generation. Finding twitter chats doesn’t have to be hard work, most of the time; there is somebody out there who has already done the research for you. Use these chats to identify influencers in your industry. Now reach out!

It’s hard to ignore social media. Even if you choose not to participate. Always make sure you are thinking about the end user, what might appeal to you doesn’t always appeal to the end user. If you’ve already started to explore social channels we’d also love to hear from you; what have been your biggest successes and challenges?

MOTIVATION: HOW TO MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM they are up to speed with the latest trend or skill, schedule a refresher session. They don’t have to come with a cost. Refresher sessions can be a great way of utilising employees who show a particular strength in the skills taught. It will continually enhance the performance of your people and the productivity of your business. Recognise and appreciate Recognition is a great way of showing appreciation for your employee’s efforts. Best thing, it’s free!

Despite our amazing technological advances, the work of an organisation is accomplished by people. Technology provides us with better tools and makes us far more efficient and productive. But it is still people who make an organisation and are ultimately responsible for its success. There has been a multitude of research conducted that has shown the relationship between employee satisfaction/perception and a company’s success. Having a motivated and productive workforce will benefit the success of your business. But how do you ensure that your employees are happy? Here are just a few tips: Empowerment Empower employees by encouraging them to solve problems when they occur. Always encourage problems to be resolved at the lowest level possible within the organisation. It’s always a good idea to offer support, information and perhaps training, but solving problems at all levels will help to engage people and creates a culture in which people know they’ll make a difference. Keep up the training! Training should never finish. If your employees feel

Let people in on the game Sharing information generously will help your employees to be fully engaged in their work. If they are kept in the dark or lack vital information, it can be tricky for them to see the full picture. Providing information such as the strategy and direction of the company, the competitive landscape and their personal or department performance will make them feel more valued, respected and incentivise them to perform better. Manage performance Address performance problems directly. Nothing demoralises staff more than a colleague who doesn’t care or do their share of work. Such people drag down everyone around them. It’s essential that managers learn to confront these problems directly and hold people accountable. Listen Listening is one of the most important skills leaders can develop. Employees have opinions and feelings which need to be expressed and heard in a safe relationship. If they can’t express their negative opinions and feelings then you can bet they’ll act them out in subtle, destructive ways. Do you have any motivation tips?
